YSL Keeping Hedi Slimane’s First Collections Under Wraps from Fashion Press

Sorry Anna Wintour, you’re gonna have to take a back seat. Yves Saint Laurent is only inviting buyers to view its women’s cruise and spring menswear collections by newly-appointed creative director Hedi Slimane, leaving editors and the international fashion press out in the couture cold.

These two collections are, as described by a YSL spokeswoman, “transitional” and will be shown some time in late June/early July. Slimane will then make his official debut during Paris Fashion Week when he parades his spring 2013 women’s collection down the runway. [WWD, sub req'd]

Estée Lauder Gets a New Muse

Estée Lauder has signed supermodel-on-the-rise Arizona Muse as its newest face, joining fellow professional beauties Hilary Rhoda, Liu Wen and Joan Smalls.

Muse will be representing fragrance, skin care and makeup thanks in part to her “warmth,” as praised by both Aerin Lauder — the company’s style and image director — and Richard Ferretti — senior vice president and creative director. Muse’s ads are set to hit next year.

The 23-year-old catwalker found out about her newest gig near while in Paris, hoofing it for the likes of Chanel and Dior : “I walked into my hotel room and found an enormous bouquet of flowers from Lauder welcoming me to the brand. It was such a great way to finish fashion week.” [WWD, sub req'd]

Karl Lagerfeld showed his Chanel Fall Winter 2012 collection in Paris this morning with models strutting around gigantic, glacial gemstones bursting from a white runway. Hussein Chalayan’s Light Metal Lover Palladium Revealed on the Runway

This morning, Hussein Chalayan showed Paris his mastery for Fall 2012. Known for using technological materials in his designs, like a dress that turns into a coffee table, or a dress that moves independently (which inspired one of Lady Gaga‘s Monster Ball gowns) this season he utilized the newest, lightest, strongest metal on the market: Palladium. He partnered with the International Palladium Board as part of their initiative to make the metal not only appealing for industrial, but also that of luxury. Hussein Chalayan muses on the collaboration, “It was very appealing for me to develop an idea inspired by the lightness and strength of palladium. This partnership was a very natural gravitation; I am interested in materials that are not automatically associated with clothing. This is what my work is about.”

Rumor Has It: Jil Sander Returning to Jil Sander, Raf Simons to Dior

For a while it seemed that every other week there was a new rumor regarding who would take over the reigns at Christian Dior. Recently, however, only one name has been circulating around town: Raf Simons. As reported in December, Dior and LVMH were close to signing the designer since the Marc Jacobs talks famously fell through — but if Simons abandoned his post at Jil Sander, who would take over? Won’t the real Jil Sander please stand up?

German-born designer Jil Sander founded her eponymous label in 1968 and served as its creative director until 2000, a year after Prada bought a 75% stake in the company. Sander butted heads with Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli and resigned as creative director and chairwoman, nearly all of her design and production team leaving with her.

The Jil Sander label then suffered, creatively and commercially, reporting its first ever net loss at $9.4 million. Bertelli had once said ”A brand as strong as Jil Sander doesn’t need to rely on the name of a designer,” but there he was, figuratively on his hands and knees, negotiating a truce with Sander, who returned in 2003 to head the label. But that truce too proved short-lived and Sander wiped her hands of Bertelli and Prada for good in 2004.

In 2005, Raf Simons was brought in to replace Sander as creative director to great effect and just a year later Jil Sander was sold to British private equity firm Change Capital Partners for $120 million. Simons has successfully reinvigorated the brand while remaining true to its minimalist roots, making it a hit with both critics and consumers alike, and as a result his contract with the brand was recently extended for an unknown period.

However, Gala, a German tabloid, reports that Sander, now 68, could return to the house she built over 40 years ago in as little as four weeks, making way for an announcement — perhaps during Paris Fashion Week — that would finally silence the rumor mill and put a nail in the coffin of Gallianogate. Kanye West Rumored to Move Design Studio to London, Still Show in Paris

Though wildly hyped and nearly universally panned — but at least his homegirl Anna Dello Russo had his back — Kanye West‘s fashion line, Dw, is still alive and kicking. Not only does it have a Twitter account, a prerequisite for anyone’s official existence, but now rumor has it the Louis Vuitton Don is moving his design studio to London to be closer to the comforting glow of Central Saint Martins.

If memory serves, Kanye had adopted CSM professor Louise Wilson as his mentor and even utilized students as interns. Undaunted by the (dis)likes of Anna Wintour, West plans to stick with the Brits and will reportedly show again in Paris come Fashion Week. Kudos to you, Kanye, for putting your enormous ego aside and not letting reason or common sense get in the way of your fashion dreams. Take notes, kids. This is how you buck convention. CFDA Won’t Shorten New York Fashion Week for Milan

Diane von Furstenberg and co. are standing their ground. Last week the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana accepted the Council of Fashion Designers of America‘s attempt at compromise — moving New York’s shows next September in exchange for Milan accepting the second Thursday rule — but only if the CFDA cut the last day of New York Fashion Week. Well, turns out that last day has some big names attached — Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein Collection, specifically – so the CFDA said “no dice” in a letter to the Camera on Tuesday.

So this whole shebang is getting all kinds of complicated so here’s a quick run-down:

New York, London, Milan and Paris had agreed — at least in the minds of New York and London — to always and forever start the fashion show calendar on the second Thursday of February and September way back in 2008. Milan and Paris claimed they had agreed to no such thing.

In accordance with this — the “second Thursday rule” — NYFW would start on September 13, thus moving everyone else back one week. Milan said, “Not cool, bro” and threatened to decide its own dates and Condé Nast threatened a boycott by all Vogue editors.

Milan said “Screw you guys, bring it on,” by deciding to keep their original dates, September 19-25, thus conflicting with both New York and London, prompting DVF to ask, “Can’t we all just get along?”

Then New York said, “Fine, you win” and offered to move the dates of the September 2012 shows, to Septembr 6 (the first Thursday) through September 13.

Milan said, “Damn right we win,” then decided to throw its weight around by stipulating that New York had to cut out the September 13 date to accommodate London’s men’s collections. And New York said, “Fuggedaboutit.”

Which more or less brings us up to speed. So the CFDA is waiting to hear if the Camera Nazionale accepts this latest development. As for the second Thursday rule, the CFDA proposed revisiting it after three years and meeting with the Camera in 2013 to discuss the 2014 show dates.

Still confused? Don’t blame you. Which is why they should just settle this with a good old-fashioned walk-off like civilized people. [WWD]

Fashion Week Calendar War Draws Closer to a Compromise

Following a board meeting to discuss the CFDA‘s proposal to move New York Fashion Week next year in return for maintaining the second Thursday rule, Italy’s Camera Nazionale della Moda has agreed to the compromise — but not without some stipulations of their own.

The Camera will agree to start the fashion week calendar on the second Thursday of September, beginning in 2013, but only if: a.) New York cuts the last day of its fashion week so as to give London an extra day for their men’s wear collections, and b.) Paris agrees to the schedule.

Paris Fashion Week, in a prime example of saving the best for last, always follows Milan Fashion Week – but by adhering to the second Thursday rule the dates of the former will be pushed even later, to the beginning of October. Meanwhile, Didier Grumbach, the president of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, said on Wednesday that “nothing has changed for 2012″ for Paris and that the Chambre will meet in December to discuss PFW’s 2013 and 2014 show dates.

So it seems the final decision lays with Paris as Milan is ready to walk away from the table if their conditions aren’t met. Diane von Furstenberg, Steven Kolb and the rest of the CFDA are currently considering Milan’s plan, giving hope that maybe everyone can get this whole shebang sorted out before New Year’s.

And if that fails, DVF is not above boarding a tank and blowing the heel right off that boot-shaped country. [WWD]

And that flag is next season’s Calvin Klein. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has proposed a compromise in the ongoing war of words and weeks between Milan’s Camera Nazionale della Moda and its sassbag president Mario Boselli.

The CFDA has agreed to move New York Fashion Week back one week next September to accommodate Milan, but the catch is that Milan and Paris have to agree to abide by the second-Thursday rule from here on out. If Milan accepts the proposal, New York Fashion Week will be held from September 6 to 13 and London Fashion Week would run from September 14 to 18.

Boselli will have a meeting with the Camera on November 30 to discuss the matter. [WWD]

International Fashion Weeks: Waste of Time or Next Frontier?

“Glenda Bailey‘s not going to go to Richmond, VA, fashion week.” This quote from CFDA CEO Steven Kolb basically sums up the fashion industry’s attitude when it comes to fashion weeks outside of the big four: New York, London, Paris and Milan. Fashion is elitist, with the haves being vastly outweighed by the have-nots. A small cadre of editors, designers, photographers, stylists and — most importantly — businessmen control this billion dollar industry, but the cracks are beginning to appear in the facade. Milan’s breaking rank and challenging the fashion week calendar and in response Condé Nast has vowed that no Vogue editors will be in attendance should Milan continue its catwalk of impertinence. China is outspending both America and Europe in the luxury sector and many brands are opening stores in the Far East to meet this ever-expanding market. Then there are the some 100 other fashion weeks around the world, showcasing local young, up-and-coming and often, rather talented designers who, while not garnering the attention of Harper’s Bazaar‘s esteemed editrix in chief, are contributing to their own cities’ and countries’ burgeoning fashion industries.

One must also consider the undeniable impact of the internet and blogs, bringing the latest and greatest in fashion to anyone with a decent internet connection. Now a teenager in Ohio can gasp at the fantastical creations from Beijing Fashion Week as a blogger in Thailand livestreams the latest Marc Jacobs runway show. But with this democratization of the fashion industry comes its inevitable oversaturation. “Every other city is doing a fashion week. I think there can be only one market in the U.S., and that’s New York,” Kolb opines. So fashion weeks in Moscow, Karachi, Berlin, Zurich, Huston, Dubai, Portland, Rochester, Islamabad and Tel Aviv won’t garner the kind of respect or attention paid to London and Paris; clothes from its runways won’t land in Elle or W – nor might they ever be worn outside of their respective countries. However, Glenda Bailey’s or Anna Wintour‘s is not the only eye foreign designers hope to capture.

For participants in Islamabad Fashion Week, fashion is a new form of expression that further immerses them in the global culture of the 21st century. When filming Fashion Week Internationale for Vice.com, hostess Charlet Duboc was surprised at the presence of women in full Burkas volunteering backstage: “I couldn’t quite believe it. How does that work? How can you look at that and admire it and yet know you can’t wear it? But they were there, they were appreciating it and it didn’t feel like there was a divide. Like, ‘You do your thing, I do my thing’ and everyone got along.” Fashion transcends more than just clothing to become a force for cultural change. And a force for economic change. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Zurain Imam observed, ”Fashion in Pakistan for a long time has been an entertainment sport; at [Karachi Fashion Week], we are trying to really make it about the business of fashion.”

While Kolb concedes that smaller fashion weeks can be good training ground for prospective designers, some bigger names are flocking abroad to show their collections. There probably is no hotter designer in America than Singapore-born, Nepalese-raised Prabal Gurung, whose last two presentations at New York Fashion Week met with near universal acclaim. Even he is considering showing his wares abroad in Moscow, Turkey, London and his native Singapore, saying, “There are so many emerging markets that we want to in some way be a part of, and I would love to showcase my collection in a more global way.” With a crowded and contentious calendar, Glenda Bailey won’t likely end up in Richmond, VA, but who’s to say that she won’t be stomping through a Singaporean jungle for the latest in spring ready-to-wear?

Fashion Week Just Got Ugly

“Let the best one win.” So says Mario Boselli head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion in response to news that Milan will keep their original fashion week dates next fall. This creates an overlap between New York and London, meaning like a child of a broken home, editors will have to pick which city they love more and which city they’ll see only on holidays and the occasional drunken weekend.

New York Fashion Week will take place Sept. 13th-20th, followed directly by London from Sept. 21st-25th with Milan squeezed in between from Sept. 19th-25th. “Italian designers unanimously agreed on the schedule,” continued Boselli, “from the smallest brand to the biggest. They showed great solidarity and Italian pride.”

To me that sounds like one big “Suck it.” The four fashion capitals have been at each others’ heavily bejeweled throats over their respective fashion week dates — well, three of them have. HBIC Paris is too busy shutting. It. Down to care. [WWD]

The Not So Fantastic Four: Fashion Capitals Eyeing War

New York, London, Milan and Paris. As any follower of fashion knows, those four cities are the main fashion capitals of the world and in that order their fashion weeks have progressed for what seems like time immemorial. Well, New York’s moving their fashion week to Sept. 13th to avoid conflicting with Labor Day, but that leaves Milan in a time crunch. And the Italians are not standing for it.

Italian designers are forming a united front to decide on their own dates, out of the three following options: 1.) move to July; 2.) show before New York in September; or 3.) leave things the way they are, which could mean an overlap between Milan and London.

Condé Nast, for its part, is not having any of this. In a letter to Mario Boselli, head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion ”obtained” – *cough* stolen *cough*– by WWD, CEO Jonathan Newhouse writes that Vogue editors “like the schedule the way it is presently organized. We at Condé Nast do not want the schedule to be changed. We very much oppose moving the Milan shows earlier so that they overlap or conflict with the London fashion shows — or with the New York fashion shows or those of any market.”

Newhouse then goes on to basically threaten a boycott by all Vogue editors — American, British, French and Italian — of Milan shows, stating matter-of-factly that “they will not under any circumstances abandon the London or New York shows if the Milan shows are moved earlier.”

The root of the conflict stems from a pact in 2008 when all four cities agreed to kick-off the fashion weeks on the second Thursday of February and September. Boselli claims that the agreement was only for three years while the CFDA‘s Steven Kolb and the British Fashion Council‘s Caroline Rush contend that it was indeed a permanent arrangement.

As for the fromage standing alone, Paris is expected to side with Milan. However, Didier Grumbach, head of the Chambre Syndicale, would rather come to a compromise and wants everyone to just chill the eff out: “When planning our schedules we have to factor in the time constraints of houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier or Givenchy that deliver couture, men’s and women’s shows with one designer. In any case, these things can’t be improvised. We have our locations. To move dates on venues like the Grand Palais cannot be improvised. Those dates are decided months and months in advance. If [anyone wants to] move dates for 2013, why not, we have the time to talk about it, to arrange it.”

Frankly, it’s a little odd that London is siding with New York considering the hubbub over model castings earlier this season, with London designers blaming New York for hogging all the best girls and the general feeling that LFW was being squeezed out. Now it seems Milan is feeling the crunch and are going to have to come to a decision soon or face the wrath of Wintour. [WWD, sub req'd]

We have entered into day 5 of Paris Fashion Week, and it’s not difficult to see why it’s the best of the four. Looking at the beauty trends during this halfway point, we’ve noticed an interesting balance of bold and minimalistic. Big, complex hairstyles took the stage just as often as the sleek and token, sending a message about the collections themselves. Were designers looking to create beauty trends alongside their lines, or did they want beauty to take a backseat and let fashion take the stage? These four hairstyles straight from the Paris runways are divided in aesthetic – which do you prefer?

There was so much going on with the hair at Rick Owens, it's difficult to pick a starting point. Slicked back into a perfect bun, elegance was toyed-with when the very front section of hair was left out of the updo. Twisted into a pompadour-esque structure and swept back to resemble one being caught in a windstorm, the 'do was worthy to pass through his "gateway to heaven."

The larger-than-life French twist beehives aren't defying gravity as much as your think. Ponytails were "teased to death" by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman and lacquered back with copious amounts of hairspray. Reminiscent of Tim Burton's film "Mars Attacks," the updo brings eerie alien skulls to mind.

The backstage beauty at Dries Van Noten wasn't trying to make a statement but rather create a uniform neutrality that would let the clothes shine. Hairstylist Paul Hanlon added extensions to the models' natural hair, created deep side parts and secured everything into a handsome low ponytail with a piece of hair wrapped around the elastic. The outcome was simple and lovely in its minimalism.

You can take the girl out of Balmain, but you can't take Balmain out of the girl. Hairstylist Sam McKnight fully understood this conviction while working with locks backstage, keeping things natural and sexy. A smoothed-back ponytail sat slightly higher on the crown than the label's fall version, making it vaguely more sophisticated too.

Game Over for Ungaro and Giles Deacon

After a sexed up year at Ungaro, Giles Deacon has amicably decided to part ways with the brand. Ungaro is ever attempting to rejuvenate the brand, re: Lindsay Lohan as artistic director back in ’09, and now they’re onto new strategies. The forthcoming show on October 3rd will be by the collective efforts of the design team. We saw how that boded for Dior, get it together Frenchies. Serve it up.

Ungaro CEO and American brand turnaround specialist, Jeffry Aronsson seems optimistic about losing their leader, “We are all here to serve the brand in a modern way. I make new discoveries every day about the talent within these walls.”

Will they make a star of an assistant designer? Let’s see who shines in Paris.

Meanwhile, Giles is onto furthering his own brand. I smell bags, shoes, makeup, perfume, the whole regalia in the coming seasons.

There are Haute Couture Fashion Collections and then…There is Azzedine Alaïa

My expectations for the last Haute Couture Fashion Week shown in Paris at the beginning of July, was not of the kind that I thought would leave a lasting impression. The Fashion Designers Showing in the Official Haute Couture schedule is shrinking from one season to the next. I would love to see a revamping of the Couture Fashion Weeks in Paris. Luckily, there were some rays of light coming through the heavy cast of clouds to brighten up my day and the confirmation of a heavy trend: the arrival of the coat-dress for the winter season.

The Good News…

Giambattista Valli presented his first Couture Collection in Paris. It is always good news to see a new comer in the Haute Couture official Schedule reinforcing the statement that Couture has a raison d’être (reason to exist). The collection is quite complete from day wear with the coat-dress, the must of the season, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The Giambasttista Valli clients are with no doubt feminin and chic, bringing a bit of a 60′s retro feel with beige, coral, animal-printed mousselines, beige ostrich-feathers and red dresses with Valentino influences.

Iris van Herpen was invited to present a retrospective of her poetic experimental work from her “Crystallization Collection”. She worked around a concept of the transformation of liquid into crystals. The volumes and materials are more about art performances and sculptures than wearable outfits like a skeleton dress to a water spray mini-dress. Her work is very organically inspired and reminds me of Alexander McQueen or Hussein Chalayan’s most conceptual work. I see a great potential in this young fashion designer, but would like to see how she transcribes her research into commercially viable clothing.

Alexander McQueen’s Fall Shoe-In

In Sarah Burton‘s vision for Fall 2011 Alexander McQueen, one of the many components she nailed spot-on are the thigh-high open-front lace-up platform heeled boot. In gray. This evokes the “Icy Queen and Her Court” as she envisioned it, while also capturing exactly what we will most certainly be needing in roughly six months’ time. With the peekaboo sliver, I envisage a frenzy of patterned, textured, hued tights that won’t be lost under the many boots to which we’ve grown accustomed. Now just imagine the possibilities if you were to untie, fold and morph the leather, just for kicks. With that, this McQueen boot is a shoe-in for Autumn. In fact, I can already see Lady Gaga working these in my mind.

Karl Lagerfeld always manges to reinvent the classic Chanel tweed suit in new and exciting ways and his Fall 2011 collection proved no different. This time around, the Kaiser gave the house signature a noted masculine edge, featuring tweed jumpsuits and cardigans.

The masculine/feminine aspect was played up even more by the oversized trousers and jackets, while the smoky runway added to the Gothic overtones set into place by the dark palette. Later on leather and lace were woven into the collection, giving Lagerfeld’s Jane Eyre a kick of rock and roll.

Gone were the flats from the Couture show (thankfully), but absent too were the sky-high stilettos that have been dominating the runways for a good ten years or so. Is there more than smoke, but also change, in the air?

The austerity of the 77 looks (Lagerfeld does not rest on his laurels…or apparently rest at all) was extremely satisfying. There was barely any color to speak of except a red here or a green there, but the overall effect was a worn but chic simplicity.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2011 Collection

Is it just me, or are there every different type of collection titles out there?… Obviously Chanel doesn’t need an introduction, do I really have to tell you how awesome this collection is?

The pre-fall 2011 collection from Chanel was themed, Paris-Byzance, after its Byzantine inspiration found in Empress Theodora. If possible, the pre-fall season brought an even more opulent and lavish showing than spring with a heavy emphasis on gold trimmed jackets, exciting silhouettes and crystal adorned bodices. Despite the antique influence, creative director Karl Lagerfeld grounded the show with Chanel’s signature relaxed elegance.

Paris Fashion week is finally over and now is the time to determine the “Forrest
Gump” Model of the
season. I see a look coming out of the model agencies. A face with
highly sculpted hard angles with hollow cheek bones and jaws protruding
that are accentuated by make up and pulled back straight hair. Magdalena
Frackowiak is a perfect example of “The Face”.

However this trend can lead to a very unhealthy and extremely skinny look. When I see how thin Fei Fei Sun has become (I
mentioned her as part of the Rising Generation of Asian
Models piece I wrote), where her face is looking gaunt and
has lost its attractive roundness. Looking at her recent Polaroids
should raise a red flag.

Another very safe and wearable collection, Marc Jacobs obviously stuck to the basics and made a beautiful collection perfect for ‘ladies who lunch.’ Longer skirts in luxurious fabrics, including leather, were paired with silk patterned bustiers, and opera length gloves.

The rumors about Peter Copping heading design at Nina Ricci are true. On Monday, the ex–Louis Vuitton designer officialy replaced Olivier Theyskens, and started working on a resort collection to be unveiled in late June. However, his first runway show won’t take place until next March, allowing him plenty of time to situate himself in the label before coming-out at Paris Fashion Week.
