The ruby is a personal treasure to Stefano Gabbana - he wears his own, set in a gold ring, every day. “The ruby is my favorite precious stone,” Gabbana said. “It represents fire and passion, two things that characterize me quite well, and it’s my birthstone too.”

It also conjures memories of the Italian racing red color of the 1960s Alfa Romeo Spider driven in The Graduate. “The nostalgia of that glamorous, liberated era is always inspiring,” Domenico Dolce said. “A casually elegant man driving a sensual, carefree woman in that red sports car. The wind is playing with her hair, she’s wearing vermillion lipstick: that image for me is so modern and powerful.”

Creative Advisor Pat McGrath understands Dolce & Gabbana’s legacy, and always mixes luxurious details with sophisticated hues to convey the brand’s message. “Don’t you just love the jeweled compacts and lipsticks?” McGrath said. “But when you open them up, you get these wonderfully classic and chic colours to play with. I love that kind of duality– it’s so Dolce & Gabbana.”

Paul was at nearly every rehearsal – far more hands on than your average ballet composer. He had already been working on an underwater themed symphony when he got the call from Ballet Master in Chief, Peter Martins, to compose a piece for the New York City Ballet. Paul accepted, and created a story and score off of what he had already started. He went back to that workon a computer program he has admittedly become quite obsessed with), with the thought of that sound inspiring dance.

Here, he beholds a Terra Punk – one of the “baddies” as he calls them – in full costume. Stella went along the guidelines of what Dad saw in his mind as he created these characters. He wanted them to be tattooed tribally, so she imprinted the tattoo upon nude dancer’s mesh.

Stella stepped out of her realm of the Stella McCartney brand to create a fantastical skin for the ballet to take place within. After a decade of work with legendary makeup artist  Pat McGrath, in which Stella rarely deviated from the fresh face, she was finally able to let McGrath stretch her theatrical wings and transport these dancers to a kingdom under the sea. She worked with the elite textile printer Dyenamix to create scales out of tie dye, and tattoos out of mesh.

The fabrics she chose fluttered with the movement of water. Part of the ensemble of hand maidens wore tops with a billowing cape behind it, two separate strips of silk attached to the shoulder and waist seams of the shirt. It hit the air like swimming fins.

Three Drunk Lords stumble-danced on stage to a wobbly jazzy sound, in thick multi-color painted striped suits. Perhaps this pattern will find its way onto Stella’s future runways.

The treacherous servent to the Princess Honorata wore a dark rectangular washed silk cape that danced like ribbon around her body, attached to her fingers. See the sketch:

The harmony of Paul’s bubbling and expressive orchestral musical movements along with Stella’s movement-focused color-blasted underwater mix of breezy chiffons and body suits creates a truly special environment for the ethereal grace of the NYC Ballet.

Dolce & Gabbana Ultra-Shine Lip Gloss $29 – Pat McGrath, Creative Advisor for Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up, offers her wise words about this ultra-luxurious gloss:  “The golden pearl and iridescent shades can be used to highlight the centre of lips for a fuller looking pout.”

After sharing her cosmetic expertise, Pat answered a few of our burning questions.

On how Dolce & Gabbana’s collections inspire her for The Make Up: It’s incredible because there are so many Dolce & Gabbana collections to pull inspiration from. I work with Domenico and Stefano researching the archives to choose some of our favorite colors for the collections. I use elements I know they are inspired by – rich, Italian color and bright, bold design.

On choosing perfect colors for the collection: For me, when it comes to cosmetics, it’s not about right, it’s about love. Do I love that color? We test each hue multiple times on different models to make sure it works for many diverse looks. But over time, you have a sense of what is right and wrong.

On the must-have makeup trends for summer: I love that brows are back – we’re grooming them and making them fuller. I’m fond of the play on lips this season with the all-or-nothing mentality. You saw everything from the super strong colors all the way to nudes on the runway. Also, using blush and bronzer everywhere – eyes, cheeks, temples, chin and body – for a maximum summertime glow.

I also got to try the infamous Animalier Bronzer and Classic Cream Lipstick in Venere while I was there. One word covers both products – obsession. If these won’t make you feel like summer is here, nothing will.

Out of dozens of hopefuls, only seven pedigree pooches made the final cut, along with Zuzanna Bijoch, Daphne Groeneveld, Gertrud Hegelund, Nyasha Matonhodze, Anaïs Pouliot and Fei Fei Sun.

Karl Templer did the styling, Pat McGrath did the make-up and Guido Palau did the hair…at least the human hair. But considering how classy these canines are, they probably had their own glam squad. [WWD]

Going chronologically here, when I arrived at the backstage area, the models were all in run-through mode so there was zero motion by the ready mirrors. This gave me a moment to check out the Anna Sui Beauty Bar - she was showing press like me her signature perfumes, her new shoe collaboration with Hush Puppies, and her collection of spectacles.

I told you I went a little nuts with the glasses, but they’re so fly I had to give you a little show of them.

That was fun, but seriously, back to the real models. Zuzanna Bijoch and Daphne Groeneveld give serious backstage face.

The über talented Pat McGrath was responsible for the cosmetic creation. The aesthetic is perfect natural skin with futuristic lashes and lids. She achieved this look with tons of mascara infused with beeswax for extra thickness and playing with liner above the crease of the lid. Just a very small amount of blush on the apple of the cheek keeps the face nude without looking dead. The light white shimmer on the eye is Snow Blossom by Covergirl.

The famed Garren styled the smooth mod sixties hair that carried the show. He calls the look the “Mod Bardot” with fullness at the crown and full fringe with a center part, “Kind of the way Anna [Sui] wears her hair.” To get that voluminous lift at the root, he used Furterer Volumea. Girls with shorter hair were styled in that curly Twiggy kind of way. He envisions this hairstyle on girls having fun, not taking itself too seriously. And we’ve been forewarned, Garren states more as a fact than a vague prediction, “Fringe will be for Fall.”

I serendipitously crossed paths with Anna Sui on my way to enter the front of house to watch the show (we heard the announcement, FIVE MINUTES!) and I managed to squeeze two questions in:

What are you most excited about for your show?

“I hope people like it, that’s what I’m feeling.”

From what I’ve seen backstage, I’ve noticed a mod theme. Is the whole collection going that way?

“You’ll see. There’s a transition that happens, that’s what I’m trying to express.”

This trend has been around for ages, but it seems to be recurring. With the fall season well underway, this gives you a whole two seasons to contemplate and allow the Spring/Summer 2009 trend of the baby face to ingrain itself in your brain. I know, I know…you feel naked without your caked on mascara, eyeshadow, foundation and eyeliner. The truth is, and always has been, that the youthful, natural look is what’s in.

Issa’s Spring 2009 models showed the exact youthful aesthetic that Spring 2009 will bring. World renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath told Vogue that ”bronzed cheeks, beautiful pinky highlights and nice healthy skin” were key for Issa’s look. He also added that a smudged, youthful smokey eye and light, glossed lips are big!

Hitting the newsstands is September is Glamour magazine. Normally Glamour is always hitting the right notes; a fun read to divulge into the world of beauty, fashion, news, and tips (not before Fashionindie of course), but we can’t say we agree with one of their articles in the making. Glamour is set to release an article, in their September issue, featuring “Seven People Who Could Change Your Style”. The list is less than impressive. The seven “fashionistas” include Pat McGrath, Victoria Beckham, Christian Louboutin, Alber Elbaz, Takashi Murakami, Serge Normant, and Agyness Deyn. Though many of these men and women have made significant names for themselves, I think it’s a little overboard to say that these seven people would change anyones style. Don’t get me wrong, their individual and unique and they let their clothes speak for themselves, but to say they start the trend? It’s ridiculous!
