RUNWAY: Paul Smith Women Spring 2010
Paul Smith knows menswear best, so why would you expect anything but androgyny in the man’s Spring 2010 women’s line? Smith sent a plethora of suits, ties, button ups, oxfords, slacks, blazers and cardigans down the runway in a vast variety of colors and prints. Want a solid, hot-pink suit or a royal-blue checkered cardigan? Well, Smith certainly covered all bases and made sure to hit those not terribly feminine, but lady-like none the less, draped, tied and wrapped dresses and blouses. Colorful and cooky, but oh so beautifully constructed.

FIRST LOOK: Paul Smith Jeans Fall 2009
Paul Smith is helping to cure nostalgia with his very late 80’s/ early 90’s, Wes Anderson film inspired Fall 2009 Jeans collection. Featuring male models Ash Stymest, Jethro Cave and Stuart Jones, Paul Smith Jeans Fall 2009 is obviously for the flashier gentleman who isn’t afraid of a little fun and color. While I can live without men in neons and acid-wash denim, It sure is nice to see some tight jeans paired with bulky knits and duck-printed button-ups!

Paul Smith Thrills Paris Show Audience with Michael Jackson Tribute

Seems like the Parisians are also feeling the loss. Paul Smith danced down the catwalk to Thriller yesterday as a little tribute to Michael Jackson. Expect much, much more of this and a couple of Michael Jackson “inspired” fashion collections to be hitting to runway hags everywhere come next season.

Paul Smith Jeans: Spring 2009 Collection

Damn Paul Smith came to play for Spring 2009! The latest Paul Smith Jeans collection is insane! Purple lace ups, green boat shoes, and Cheap Monday looking polka dot pants have this collection looking not only unique, but trendy as all hell. I’ve always been impressed by Paul Smith’s use of color, and this collection doesn’t let me down (or make me look dumb). The collection does look a bit Marc Jacobs-ish, but that isn’t necesarily a bad thing.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Paul Smith Women Fall 2009
To put it very bluntly, I don’t take bright colors very seriously. A strange notion, I know, but doesn’t it always seem that the girls starving for attention or fooling their way through life wear the hot pink and lime green? Well, thanks to Paul Smith Women’s Fall 2009 collection, I have a newfound appreciation for the bright and bold. Tastefully intertwined in a collection of classic English khaki trenches, a variety of houndstooth tweed pieces, voluminous floral dresses, floody knickers and horizontal striped sweaters, Smith added eccentric splashes of bright color to spice up a timeless stock of garments. Though Smith claims his collection was designed sans an inspiration, I find his vision very obvious: standing out while fitting in.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Paul Costelloe A/W 2009
Paul Costelloe opened London Fashion Week with a collection that incorporated muted colors and definitive shapes, a practice the designer is known for.
According to The Catwalk Queen, “Costelloe’s silhouette was chunky at the neck and shoulders, flaring out directly below to above the knee, resulting in a slightly 60s swing effect. Fabrics were primarily brocade or knit, and the colour scheme went from grey and gold through to rust, hot pink, red, metallic gold and silver, finally fading into black.”

Jethro Cave Shoots With Heidi Slimane

My favorite fella in fashion (sorry Daniel Saynt) Jethro Cave recently met up with photographer Heidi Slimane and stylist Nicola Formichetti for a little go at a few snapshots. The results are amazing. The fresh face in men’s fashion has been spotted all over the runway in the past couple days, including Paul Smith and Gareth Pugh.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Paul Smith Fall 2009 Collection

Holy shit Paul Smith is a f*cking legend! The man is absolutely incredible simply in the way he is able to stack pattern, on top of pattern, on top of pattern, and on top of all of it he throws in bright and vibrant colors too. He manages to blow my mind every time, and I have a strange feeling that a good handful of these pieces will find their way to a little someone called Chuck Bass. I can’t even say enough good things about this collection. Enjoy all you fashion mavens!

Colab-Ho: Paul Smith x Lomography
Paul Smith linked up with Lomography to produce the new Lomo Fisheye 2 camera with the trademark Paul Smith striped print on it. The camera is really cool and old school looking. The camera retails for a mere $150. I don’t know why there were so many cool cameras out today, but I feel the need to post them all!

Men’s Style’s Sixteen Essentials For Fall That Aren’t So Essential

Fashion Indie Recommends: Skip clear and definitely skip wayfarers. Go with something a bit cooler and more subtle for Fall. (Karen Walker $170 via Gargyle)
Men’s Style released their 16 essentials for Fall, well I have decided to put my two cents in and chose ten of their items that I think suck. Their options are too safe, too old man, and just plain old boring. Not only am I going to give you some damn good alternatives, I’ll tell you where to get them and save you some cash too. All the links to buy the items are at the bottom.

Fashion Indie Recommends: Who goes hiking in New York City? Try these higher, yet comfortable boots for size. Tuck your pants into them, or wear your pants over top. It's called versatility people (H by Hudson $235 via Urban Outfitters)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Two is always better than one, so try this double buckled belt. I think I wore a braided belt in elementary school and hated it then. (All Saints $88 via All Saints)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Lapels are all the rage when it comes to suits these days. Simple outline on a standard grey suit (CNC $829 via Revolve Clothing)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Why spend so much on something so simple. Go cheap on an item like this, not only will know one know the difference, they won't care (American Apparel $16 via American Apparel)

Fashion Indie Recommends: How old are you that you are wearing a sweater like that? Don't get old too fast go with this cool shawl collar sweater (Julian Red $210 via Oak)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Go polka dots. They aren't micro, but they aren't a bold blatant pattern (Comme de Garcons x H&M $TBD via Nitrolicious)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Double breasted jackets aren't doing it for me. Like a said, lapels people! Try a cool knot jacket! (Scotch and Soda $240 via Revolve Clothing)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Go long and tie it off. Commit to the full trench coat and be sure to get one with a belt so it doesn't look too baggy (Filius $450 via Refinery 29).

Fashion Indie Recommends: So this may be a bit more expensive, but undoubtedly worth it. This cool drooping neck sweater allows wearers to rock a cool sweater, or pull it up and over your head into a hood (reference image below)(Unconditional $278 via Oak)

Runway Rundown: Paul Smith
Despite his strength existing mostly in the menswear department, Paul Smith’s Spring 2009 collection for women was probably one of his most coherent yet! Gathering inspiration from an exhibition of British Orientalist art, Smith experimented with voluminous cotton pants and dresses, floral silk chiffon prints and layered petticoats. As an experienced menswear designer, the tailoring of Smith’s coats, jackets and pants was impeccable. Maybe womenswear is your forte after all!

Runway: Paul Smith, Spring/Summer 09

I am honestly disappointed at this current Paul Smith collection. It seems lacking, and the colors and patterns are very dull, unlike usual Paul Smith. Not to much originality either, although very wearable.

TrendSpark: Monochrome
Great article in WWD about the newest (well heard about it for some time, but now it’s official) trendspark for fall: monochromatic looks from heard to toe.

“Come Fall, designers like Maurizio Pecoraro are advocating a monochrome vision that extends from head to stockinged toe. “My idea was to create a pure look,” explains Pecoraro, who conjured his eighties-era memories of singly hued looks from Claude Montana. The cherry on top of this ultra-matched look is tights, particularly in hard-to-find hues like persimmon at Bottega Veneta, ocher at Nina Ricci, and burgundy at Albino. (Stow the matte black Wolfords for next season.) Knee boots created a similar effect at Akris and Halston, but hosiery’s hegemony is undeniable. Even pattern-loving designers like Anna Sui and Paul Smith ordered up custom leg wear for complete coordination.”

Esquire Attempts To Squeeze Some Art Out Of Its Covers

Sir Paul Smith gets the Warhol Treatment. Better Choice: Marc Jacobs
Karl Gets Nix’d. Does Karl not have any other expression other than contempt?

Miuccia Prada is barely there.

Alber Elbaz, not wanting to appear fat, just draws himself in.
There are no fat superheros Alber, so the cape is so not working right now.

Christopher Bailey plays the perfect kid.

Donatella the Saint? I think this might be a joke, but hell their noses match perfectly.

Didn’t Kanye Already do this? Better. And Less Gay. Plus, Whose Body Is That?

Dustin Hoffman looks like the Uncle who touched you in your no no place when you were seven.
Wait you didn’t have an uncle like that? Haha, yeah, neither did I….

Why in the hell is a picture of a dude snapping his fingers iconic?
Giorgio Armani really doesn’t know, he also really doesn’t care.

Vivienne Westwood looks like a little old man. I wonder if that was the point?

Daddy Dolce: “Jimmy, did Uncle Gabbana stick his finger in your no no place?”
Uncle Gabbana: Sniff. Sniff. “Ahhhhhh…”

The Well Dressed Rebel in GQ April 2008

I must admit that GQ has been one of my must reads from the tender age of 13. This issue brought about some major shifts in what’s ok for the distinguished gentleman to wear. “The Well Dressed Rebel” highlight’s some of menswears most prolific rule breakers offering tips like wear a ton of jewelry, wear tuxedo jackets with jeans, and don’t skimp on the brightly colored socks. Who knew rebelling was so forulamatic?
Some of those featured include Saks’ Michael Macko, photographers Nathaniel Goldberg and Wayne Maser, designers Phiip Crangi, Andy Spade, Paul Smith, Barker Black’s Creative Director Derrick Miller, and Coach VP Walker MacWilliam among others. View the story here.
