Though only 17% of men actually use body spray — most often in lieu of actually showering — Axe is by far the most popular choice, with a 74% share of the market; the majority of men prefer after shave (65%) or cologne (62%). On the other hand, 47% of women use body spray as compared to body lotion (59%), eau de parfum (43%) and eau de toilette (34%), so I guess it makes scents (*rimshot*) for Axe to target the fairer sex. However, can Axe appeal to women as it has so successfully appealed to men since 2002?

In the advertising campaign for Anachy, Axe attempts to level the playing field. As David Kolbusz, creative director of London-based ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty explains: “Before, an Axe commercial was always about a guy spraying himself and a girl being attracted, and Axe giving him an edge in the mating game, whereas now women also have something to spray on themselves, and consequently there’s more of an equilibrium between the sexes.”

Meanwhile, welcome to the 20th century, Axe.

As part of this new advertising strategy, there’s also more of an equilibrium between “the sexy.” According to Kolbusz, “Girls in Axe advertising will always be a little better-looking than the guys” but in the Anarchy ads the attractive gap is tightened “without the average guy feeling threatened.”

Marketing aside, the real question remains, will a girl really want to wear a scent traditionally associate with Guidos and pedos? That, of course, depends on what Anarchy smells like — thus Anarchy “for her”  is only being offered in a limited edition, with the possibility of permanence depending on sales.

However, sales among women might not be Axe’s biggest concern. David Vinjamuri, an adjunct professor of marketing at New York University made this astute observation:“The moment you start talking to girls, you lose credibility with teenage boys.” It’s nice to know that advertising is just like puberty…only more awkward. He told WWD, “I love to play with words, as I love to play with scents. A fragrance is not made to be explained by words. A mix of scents creates something we can smell but not describe. I can tell you that the base is patchouli fraction orpur, benzoin Laos orpur, tonka bean and musk, and the heart (a perfume must have a heart that should break, in a way, our heart) is heliotrope (one of my favorite scents), violet and freesia. But I don’t want to be too technical about the fragrance. I prefer a sentimental approach.”  Sounds a bit over the top for our tastes, but being major Lagerfeld fans we have to show our support.  Would you buy it?

The fragrance itself, described as “the ultimate connoisseur’s scent”, was a concoction of pepper, grapefruit, lavender, vanilla, and patchouli (aka light, cool, and a little intimidating).  Former NY Times Scent Editor Chandler Burr walked us through each individual scent in a fun and compelling sniff class that broke it all down.

Who is this man exactly?  GQ Style Correspondent Brett Fahlgren told us that the character behind the scent was “a contemporary charmer, with a spirit of masculinity– a man who is courteous, refined, and cultivated” while the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana remarked “he is worldly, successful, impeccable, but also boasts something else such as an innate elegance that distinguishes him from the rest”.

More exciting news at the event was the launch of Dolce & Gabbana’s new iPhone app, “Rules for the Modern Gentlman” which was written by Dylan Jones, editor of GQ UK.  The app was designed to cover tips on etiquette (like asking a girl on a date properly), style & grooming (like how to match your patterns), and quick solutions for gentlemanly predicaments (sort of like the how to eat a pork loin off a rib without disturbing the passed appetizers peace).  Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana told us, “The application is a perfect reflection of the scenarios that the Dolce&Gabbana man may find himself encountering; as a modern gentleman he can approach each situation with a sense of poise and confidence that distinguishes him from the rest.”

When looking for the campaign’s face, naturally, the brand turned to Hollywood ladies man: Matthew McConaughey.  The campaign video showed off McConaughey, the one gentleman himself, the morning after an epic celebration (very a la How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days). Still tuxedo clad, he strolls through the party ballroom doing exactly what we would all do after a grand night at a ball, staring into a beach sunset.  How dapper. We recommend the scent for the young and elegant set, the gentlemen of our generation.

Over breakfast in his store on Madison Avenue, Oscar de la Renta himself introduced us to Esprit d’Oscar, and told us a bit about its creation.

He has garnered a prestigious team of motivated modern women, including his daughter, who helped him to create this fragrance that allows his original scent to transcend time and evolve.

“Today we are dealing with a very different consumer since the time I’ve been working in fashion. Never ever in the history of time has a woman been so in control of her destiny as she is today. And a woman knows exactly what she wants. There has never been a better time for a woman to fulfill her aspirations.”

The design of the bottle stemmed from his first encounters with fragrance making, and is very sentimental for him. It also contains a floral shape like the original Oscar bottle.

“The cap is a flower, not a specific flower, but the image of a flower with a dewdrop. When I was little I didn’t know how perfumes were made. How does one extract the smell from a flower? Well getting up in the morning and looking at the dewdrops, I thought that perhaps if you could collect the dewdrops from the flowers, you could make perfume.”

Expect nothing less than pure elegance. It is crisp, with a hint of citrus that lingers over essences of clean linen and jasmine.

As Oscar de la Renta took my hand and inhaled the scent of his own fragrance on my skin, my body turned to mush, and I realized once again that he is the most elegant man on the planet.

Inspired by nature, the Fernandez sisters use citrus and floral notes to create rich and straightforward fragrances that can be worn on any occasion. Right now, I am wearing Jasmine Joy on one wrist and Citrus Charm on the other. Jasmine Joy reminds me so much of a spring walk in Central Park, minus the homeless people, with a blend of honeysuckle, jasmine and sandalwood. Citrus Charm is what I want my mornings to smell like with an energizing mix of grapefruit, mandarin and water lily. I’m totally hooked and not the only believer. Celebs like Mila Kunis, Jaime Pressly and Demi Moore are huge fans.

Surprise surprise, Taylor Swift has decided to develop a perfume. Seems like it was only a matter of time. The singer has linked with Elizabeth Arden to develop a scent set to hit store shelves next fall. This can either be really good or pretty unfortunate. Clad in a nude strapless dress and rocking sun-kissed highlights, Jennifer Aniston dazzled the crowd at Harrods as she showcased her sexy and clean new perfume, dubbed Jennifer Aniston – The Debut Fragrance.

Though months ago, StyleList reported the scent was originally called Lolavie, the name apparently changed at the last minute.

“It’s been a year-and-a-half journey. I’d been asked to do things before, and it never felt organic. But when Leon Falic, president of the Falic Fashion Group, approached me to be involved with the process from inception to fruition, I thought, “This could be a creative expression. And it’s turned out to be an extension of myself as opposed to slapping my name on something,” Aniston told WWD.

We’re eagerly awaiting a whiff of her floral eau once it rolls out in the U.S.!

A co-blogging adventure with Perfume Shrine.

When choosing perfume for summer most people tend to go for the light and citrusy. There’s something about crisp scents in the eau de cologne style that seems refreshing, at least for the short time they actually last on skin. But no matter how appealing the idea of a “cooling” scent may seem, I find that perfumes that actually smell like a real summer in its truest and most real form are much more satisfying.

I was exploring the idea of an ultimate summer. It means something different to each one of us, but think for a moment about the summer after you graduated from high school. Even if you don’t over-romanticize (and I won’t. Some of the memories from that time in my life are sucky at best), it still had some magic. The last summer of youth, living on the verge of adulthood, traveling, trying to make the most of that time before everyone scatters in pursuit of an unknown future.

And there are the scents of times and places that actually smell like summer and go with the heat without trying to fight it. These are not fresh and clean perfumes. Many are dry and bitter, and all of them remind me in some way of moments from that long lost summer.

1. Rien by Etat Libre d’Orange. Burnt rubber. Smells like driving an old car (too fast) on a very hot day, the sun is merciless but the road is open.

2. Anat Fritz by Anat Fritz- Dry woods and herbs. Camping in the woods, smelling pines and a hint of coolness in the air.

3. L’Eau Trois- Dyptique. Hiking in hills covered with cistus and other aromatics. It hasn't rained in weeks and the branches are dry and scratchy, but the scent is exhilarating.

4. Lonestar Memories- Tauer Perfumes. A campfire under the night sky. We’re hours away from the city and the stars are so bright you can touch them just above the smoke.

5. Eau du Fier- Annick Goutal. Another campfire, this time the whole gang is there and we’re spending the night on the beach. Drinking sticky orange juice and trying to make aromatic tea over the fire. It’s bitter but strangely good.

6. Dzing!- L’Artisan. An August night at the fair. You can smell the petting zoo, the caramel from some vendor’s cart and the leather jacket the tall guy had in his car and let you borrow because suddenly there’s chill in the air. Or maybe it’s just you.

7. Bulgari Black- Getting a vanilla ice cream at the end of that night. It never tasted better.

8. DKNY Women (the 1999 original)- Early morning in the city, just after a rainy night. Your hair is a little wet, your clothes still smell clean and you are acutely aware of the scents wafting all over. Steam from laundry rooms, fruit stands just opening and the smell of damp cobblestones and concrete. You’re happy to be alive.

9. Shalimar- Guerlain (vintage extrait, of course). You dress up for the night. There’s some cleavage involved and you decide to go all out there. The summer is almost over, so it’s tonight or never. There’s danger in the night air and all around you.

10. Muscs Kublai Khan- Serge Lutens. Obviously, Fracas has done the trick and this is the morning after.

LINK LOVE:10 Unusual Summer Fragrance Choices

Lady Gaga has partnered with Coty, a company that focuses on celebrity fragrances, to create something “unusual”. No surprise there. I certainly have no problem with unusual or different, but in the fragrance world that could be pretty worrisome. As long as it’s something that smells good and I know what it’s made from, I’ll check it out.

I had a hard time deciphering Tom Ford's White Musk Collection when it first came out last year. I enjoy the entire Tom Ford Private Blend line and love many of the perfumes, but Ford's habit of mass releases is making the sniffing and choosing too overwhelming. Every time I played with the testers at Saks or Bergdorf I ended up forgetting which was which. Add to that the general softness of these scents that gets lost in the department store's air, the fact they all require several sprays to show their true selves and develop right and you get a very confused blogger. It was only when I got larger decants of the four White Musks and started giving them my full attention that things started falling into place for me.

I have no idea what Urban Musk means. Did Tom Ford mean the funk of the NYC subway? The smell in the East Village the night before garbage day? The unwashed hair of some the hipsters in Williamsburg? Where does an urban musk even come from? I mean, after the Mystery Of Musk project I’ve definitely broadened my musky horizons and learned to identify the feeling of musk, but I can’t describe any of it as “urban”. Still, there’s something about Ford’s Urban Musk that’s a bit angular, less fuzzy, maybe.

I might be anosmic to some of the musk molecules used in this fragrance. I smell it, but at times the core drifts away from me and then comes back. I feel like I’m missing a piece of the composition, even though I greatly enjoy everything that’s around it. I like the floral opening. It’s a somewhat abstract jasmine, maybe a bit too synthetic but the whole man-made industrialized feel might also be part of the urban concept. Most of the perfume as I perceive it is about honeyed sweet musk. Any strongly barnyard/animalic aspect is lost on me here. Then again, part of the reason I adore musky perfumes is because they tend to smell cuddly and soft on me, as my skin neutralizes any beastly aromas. The same goes for honey. Miel de Bois is nothing but loveliness for me (note to self and to scent twin- let’s try layering MdB and MKK and see what happens), while some people describe it in litter box terms.

While Urban Musk never veers far from skin level, its longevity is very satisfying. I get whiffs of its vanilla and leather dry-down 12 hours and more after application.

Is it a must-have for musk afictionados? I can’t say. Sample first to make sure you actually smell all of it and enjoy the entire journey, even if it was sort of meh at the store. Give Urban Musk some air and time before dismissing it. I’m glad I did, even if I definitely don’t need a full bottle of this one.

We continue the natural musk-less musk adventure. I'm  anosmic to some musks (I tested some of the oils and blends they sell at Whole Foods and couldn't smell several. Many of those were labeled “Egyptian Musk”), but when I can actually smell them, they are among the best things to ever happen to my skin. The sultry dirty warmth sits very well with me, as is obvious by looking at my personal collection. Experiencing the different musk stories couldn't have been more enjoyable (remind me I said this if we ever do a vanilla project)- I'm not just in my element, I'm in my catnip.

Drifting Sparks from Artemisia Natural Perfume begins smoky and woody. The very animalic quality remains there even as the scent takes a sharp turn and morphs into a big white floral centered around jasmine. It's a bit shrilly on me, but at the same time I can't keep my nose away from my arm when wearing it, trying to follow the progression and constant change and movement. There's a salty quality, sea air that drifts closer and then goes away for a while only to reappear and bring with it a hint of smoke and fire from afar. That's where the musky quality becomes so apparent. My favorite part of Drifting Sparks is the dry-down. The blend of smoke, salty skin and sweetness is a great interpretation of the theme. While it doesn't live long enough on my skin, the two  hour journey is exhilarating.

Tallulah B2 by Jane Cate from A Wing & A Prayer Perfumes started so citrusy I was worried at first I got the wrong sample. A juicy blend of grapefruit, orange and mandarin is not how I'd expect a musk perfume to open. Then came the sweet and creamy vanilla, but before one can say Theorema, the scent becomes soft and incredibly fuzzy. It's like smelling Theorema through a thick layer of cashmere- an interesting and pleasant sensation, though not necessarily one I'd connect with the legendary Tallulah Bankhead.  But a serious shape-shifting takes place after a while- a very familiar musk appears on my skin and the first time I tried it had me floored- It smelled like a softer version of MKK. That sweet and warm no-longer quite clean skin scent that has a hint of fruit and a whole lot of promised pleasure. I have a feeling this dry-down would have won Ms. Bankhead’s approval. It certainly won mine. Longevity is good (more than six hours), sillage lower than low- this is a skin scent if there ever was one.

Natalie Portman has been named the latest face of  Christian Dior perfume.

Just in time for those relaxing summers in The Hamptons, Bond No. 9 has released its fifth installment in Andy Warhol fragrances. Andy Warhol Montauk is a unisex perfume created as an ode to those quick breaks Mr. Warhol took from New York City during the summer months. The bottles went on sale just a couple of days ago. The bright sun shining through my bedroom window this morning has given me an insane burst of energy. I can only hope the snow continues to melt and spring finally arrives. Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Lovers fragrance line is also undergoing a seasonal shift, as the five plastic dolls that adorn each bottle are now clad in bikinis.

The five scents (Love, Angel, Music, Baby and G), each carry their own personal style, and really stand out amongst the other good-smelling products on the top of your dresser. Now it can get an instant warm-weather upgrade. Which one fits your style best?

Speaking of fragrance, here’s a good reason to not buy counterfeit fragrances: apparently contain urine, bacteria, and antifreeze, which can cause skin reactions. You can spot fakes by looking for loose cellophane, thin boxes, and bar codes that are on the side rather than the back of the box.

It’s time for the latest news in beauty partnership: FLIRT! Cosmetics, a division of Estée Lauder, has taken on The Veronicas to front their newest fragrance “Rock-N-Rebel”. The girls will be hosting contests and giving makeup tips for FLIRT! via Facebook.

Maison Martin Margiela has launched their debut fragrance, Untitled.* The new scent was created under the auspices of L’Oreal. It is expected to debut at Colette in Paris next week, elsewhere in March.

“This perfume includes of course the codes of the brand, while cultivating its personality. Based on green floral notes, we can smell galbanum, boxwood, mastic, incense, bitter orange … as if they had been gathered after the rain.”

With her first fragrance having made its debut in 2007, Mariah Carey is up for yet another round. Her newest perfume, “Forever”, is a unique blend of green apple, “exotic woods”, and gardenia set to capture exactly how Mariah feels about her life right now. All of that in a perfume bottle!

Forever will hit store shelves in 2,000 different department stores in multiple sizes.

Many of us thought Acqua Di Parma threw in the towel when it came to creating more women’s fragrances. After all, the last on released was in 2004, just over 5 years ago. But the company’s back to surprise us all, and after a long time-out they’ve finally released another perfume for women. Magnolia Nobile is the latest in Acqua Di Parma’s collection of vanilla flavors and flowery scents. Pick one up in stores this September!

Pefume developer Francis Kurkdjian has decided to take on BeBe! The fashion chain with two prior perfumes under their belt seemed to be overdue for a fresh fragrance. Bebe’s Eau de Parfum will be available later this month along with matching beauty products!

If you ever dreamt of creating and selling your own perfume, here’s the perfect shot. Video game company PlayFirst has released Passport to Perfume, a game centered around a woman by the name of Sophia who creates her own fragrances and manages a boutique that sells them. I knew their were video games for just about everything, but somehow I didn’t think this would make the list. But hey, I’m not complaining!

Kate Moss has released the ads for her 4th consecutive women’s fragrance. Vintage is a unique blend of fruity smelling scents that produce that perfect bottled-up perfume. The fragrance, which will be sold in conjunction with other body products, will hit store shelves this September.
