RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Philip Lim Fall 2009 Collection

Philip Lim has always seemed to put more effort into his women’s collections and the success of his men’s collections is pretty hit or miss. I think this year he did an OK job, but I can’t help but feel like this collection isn’t complete. Lim displayed a solid mix of classic suits with some newer edgier looks. I like the studded shoes and shirts, but they are such a small random accent to having this collection. I feel like he didn’t fully complete the image he was shooting for. The looks are there, I just don’t think the execution is as pristine as it should be.

Philip Lim: Spring 2009 Collection

Philip Lim strikes again with a Spring 2009 collection that follows in the footsteps of the brands success. There are some great pieces in this collection, but then again it’s Philip Lim and everything is going to be amazing. The blazer featured above is one of my favorite pieces in the collection, and the color palate is awesome.

Elettra Wiedemann may be the daughter of Isabella Rossellini, BFF of Chris Benz, and a biomedical engineering student who has also recently founded JustOneFrickinDay.com, an organization that (among other projects) is raising funds to build the first solar-powered hospital in Kigutu, Burundi. Co-founded by James Marshall, the Burundi Solar Project has enlisted Chris Benz, House of Diehl, Rogan, Rag & Bone, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Giambattista Valli to each create an energy-inspired, limited edition t-shirt to be sold at JustOneFrickinDay.com.
The t-shirts, all made from 100% organic cotton, are available in men’s and women’s one size fits all and will sell for $60 each. There are only 100 available in each style, and each is numbered. A simpler style by House of Diehl, which served as creative consultants for the project, is also available for $30.

Runway: Phillip Lim, Spring/Summer 08
Phillip Lim’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection withholds a certain spark. The array of clothing displays a color ensemble unlike many other collections; there is a wide range of bright colors to add flair to each look. Shorts made a rampant appearance in this collection as well as uniquely styled pants, rolled up to ensure a statement. The coats in the collection are not subject to one material; rather, there is a wide variety used. Sweaters made an appearance in Phillip’s collection as they were well-paired with differently styled shoes and leather bags. The numerous looks created ensure a collection abundant in Phillip’s detailed design.

Where’s Your Head At?
I have curly hair that poufs into a small cloud at the slightest increase in the dewpoint. This means that my hair is pulled back a lot of the time into a messy bun (because a ponytail in all its fluff will be wider than my head). To keep this from looking blah, I wear headbands—a lot. They have the added benefit of tamping down stray curls that have developed lives of their own. Preppy they may be, but I love J.Crew plastic headbands for their simplicity and go-with-everythingness (just pare down other preppy elements of your outfit).
I like to pair my sundresses with something a little edgy (yay contrast) like studs or this tattoo-print headband from Etsy.
If you have something with simple, clean lines on (like a t-shirt dress) make your headband the focal point (it’s pricey, but this 3.1 Philip Lim headband from ShopJinny is gorgeous).
Wear an all-black ensemble and pair with something uber-girly; I like how this shot is styled with multiple headbands, but I’m not sure how functional it is (unless you have a really big head).
This braided crystal headband is another good option, but again—kinda pricey, as is this femme ribbon headband.
They’ll make your feel just a bit more put-together on days when you’re decidedly not …

Prada’s In, Philip Lim’s Out, Amy Odell is Hot!!!
Loved this piece by New York Magazine blogger Amy Odell. She took the seasons “hottest” mandals to the street and asked folks if they’d wear them. Philip Lims monstrosities for Birkenstock were the most critically panned, D&G’s $500 white, shiny slip ons we’re also hated. The winning sandals we’re by Prada and Burberry. My personal fave is Amy Odell, was totally picturing someone else when ever I read her articles. Thank god for video.

I’ll Kick Myself in the Ass Later, but Head to Gap Today

The Gap’s new collection featuring 3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, threeASFOUR, Michael Bastian and Philip Crangi jewelry has hit stores today. Above, chicks from NYLON rock the looks, further proving that NYLON’s staff lacks style (sorry lady but white rimmed glasses are SOOO Chloe Sevigny circa 2004 it hurts). I really, really want everything from the mens side of this collection since it’s the first time Gap is releasing mens goodies from Michael Bastian.
I will be at the Gap today, as should you, sad, yet uberly true.

Shop: Philip Lim for Coach
Reed Krakoff and Phillip Lim are out to reinvent the trenchcoat.
The two met through the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. In 2007 Lim won the CFDA Swarovski women’s wear award for his two-year-old contemporary label, 3.1 Phillip Lim. Krakoff is vice president of the CFDA.
“He’s not only amazingly talented, but has a great personality,” said Krakoff. “He really understands great American design and the trench is an iconic piece of American outerwear.” The two concocted a long belted suede trench that will retail for $1,798 and a short leather one that will sell for $1,298. Outerwear is a growing category for Coach, which has also partnered with designers such as Lutz & Patmos for knits and Eugenia Kim for hats.
“It’s part of our moving forward and staying fresh,” added Krakoff of the burgeoning categories. “We’re starting to add more clothing.” The coats will be available in Coach stores starting in August.
