We’re getting just beyond transition time – it’s May 20th and almost the End Of The World. We’re getting restless and reckless and damn close to busting out our summer clothes and just throwing a jacket on top. Well, you know what? Go for it. If we’ve only got one day left, hell, even if we don’t, bring on your new warm weather purchases. A few extra layers (and some neutral colors) will make it work right now.

(In order of appearance to me)

High Waist Native Shorts | Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony

Here the outfit began, a tall cut flounce short with an old time print.

Loose Knit Crop Top | Wool and the Gang

Hand-knit by Peruvian women, this cotton crop breathes and fits the high waist proportion.

Striped Blazer | Topshop

Make it work aprop with a sport jacket, and make the Man Repeller proud of your pattern smashing.

Lace Bike Shorts | I Still Love You

These will be your new essential. Safety shorts with subtle pizzazz.

Thigh Rise Knit Socks | Pendelton Meets Opening Ceremony

With light patterned details in the knits (think horseshoes and snakeskin), these’ll give you added warmth for a light chill.

Rounded Salmon Frames | Cacharel

Even on a rainy day, it’s good to be optimistic.

Box Stitch Braid Ribbon | 3.1 Philip Lim

Match the native print with a lanyard stitch from your childhood (or maybe just mine?).

Jaded Rock Ring | Kenneth Jay Lane

The jade stands alone emboldened by the salmon surrounding it.

Wicker Flap Satchel | Stella McCartney

This only works for work if you don’t need to bring your own computer. (AKA I can’t wear this to work)

Wood Wedge Nude Bootie | Maury and Eve

I first chose these, but suede and rain don’t get along. And as this May is raining on our parade, stick to platforms that can take weather the storm.

Some fashion news we can afford to hear about: Vena Cava for Uniqlo launches tomorrow! The much anticipated collaboration kicks off May 12th, at the Uniqlo in Soho tomorrow with the delicate beauty you’d expect from the design duo of Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai. They’ve mixed their soft eye with the technologically advanced and well-priced fabrications of the major Japanese brand.

This collaboration is part of Uniqlo’s initiative to celebrate New York designers. Costello Tagliapietra and Charlotte Ronson have launched collabs there in the last month, and we saw Philip Lim there over the winter.

Each piece is no more than $29.90 – a freaking steal for any of these coveted designers! So thanks Uniqlo for making their stunning aesthetic available for a price that doesn’t jeopardize our first borns.

Check out the line at Uniqlo.

Who do you think will win in the competitive categories? And this is my first time seeing the actual CFDA trophy, but is it just me or does it look like something recovered from an alien spaceship? And furthermore, the trophy kind of has a little gut. If it insists on being a fashion award, I think it’s time to get on a diet…

WWD recently asked some fashion heavyweights to give their definitions of “cheap finds”. While everyone provided actual tips like Margiela inspired looks at Costco (Vena Cava) or $35 Ninja Pants from Chinatown (Philip Lim), Ken Downing SVP/Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus had this to say…

“At Neiman Marcus we have Fab Finds, which are great deals! Great design, amazing quality, at a price that puts a smile on the customer’s face. My favorites this season: Lanvin leopard jersey dress, $990, and from Narciso Rodriguez, olive knit silk and Lycra dress, $850.”

I just don’t think this is what they are talking about when they think “cheap”, but I guess when you run the land of “Needless Markups” it’s important to remember that some people are rich enough to consider $1000 bucks cheap…

Philip Lim has always seemed to put more effort into his women’s collections and the success of his men’s collections is pretty hit or miss. I think this year he did an OK job, but I can’t help but feel like this collection isn’t complete. Lim displayed a solid mix of classic suits with some newer edgier looks. I like the studded shoes and shirts, but they are such a small random accent to having this collection. I feel like he didn’t fully complete the image he was shooting for. The looks are there, I just don’t think the execution is as pristine as it should be.

Elettra Wiedemann may be the daughter of Isabella Rossellini, BFF of Chris Benz, and a biomedical engineering student who has also recently founded JustOneFrickinDay.com, an organization that (among other projects) is raising funds to build the first solar-powered hospital in Kigutu, Burundi. Co-founded by James Marshall, the Burundi Solar Project has enlisted Chris Benz, House of Diehl, Rogan, Rag & Bone, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Giambattista Valli to each create an energy-inspired, limited edition t-shirt to be sold at JustOneFrickinDay.com.

The t-shirts, all made from 100% organic cotton, are available in men’s and women’s one size fits all and will sell for $60 each. There are only 100 available in each style, and each is numbered. A simpler style by House of Diehl, which served as creative consultants for the project, is also available for $30.

Phillip Lim’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection withholds a certain spark. The array of clothing displays a color ensemble unlike many other collections; there is a wide range of bright colors to add flair to each look. Shorts made a rampant appearance in this collection as well as uniquely styled pants, rolled up to ensure a statement. The coats in the collection are not subject to one material; rather, there is a wide variety used. Sweaters made an appearance in Phillip’s collection as they were well-paired with differently styled shoes and leather bags. The numerous looks created ensure a collection abundant in Phillip’s detailed design.

I have curly hair that poufs into a small cloud at the slightest increase in the dewpoint. This means that my hair is pulled back a lot of the time into a messy bun (because a ponytail in all its fluff will be wider than my head). To keep this from looking blah, I wear headbands—a lot. They have the added benefit of tamping down stray curls that have developed lives of their own. Preppy they may be, but I love J.Crew plastic headbands for their simplicity and go-with-everythingness (just pare down other preppy elements of your outfit).

I like to pair my sundresses with something a little edgy (yay contrast) like studs or this tattoo-print headband from Etsy.

If you have something with simple, clean lines on (like a t-shirt dress) make your headband the focal point (it’s pricey, but this 3.1 Philip Lim headband from ShopJinny is gorgeous).

Wear an all-black ensemble and pair with something uber-girly; I like how this shot is styled with multiple headbands, but I’m not sure how functional it is (unless you have a really big head).

This braided crystal headband is another good option, but again—kinda pricey, as is this femme ribbon headband.

They’ll make your feel just a bit more put-together on days when you’re decidedly not …

Philip Lims monstrosities for Birkenstock were the most critically panned, D&G’s $500 white, shiny slip ons we’re also hated. The winning sandals we’re by Prada and Burberry. My personal fave is Amy Odell, was totally picturing someone else when ever I read her articles. Thank god for video.

“He’s not only amazingly talented, but has a great personality,” said Krakoff. “He really understands great American design and the trench is an iconic piece of American outerwear.” The two concocted a long belted suede trench that will retail for $1,798 and a short leather one that will sell for $1,298. Outerwear is a growing category for Coach, which has also partnered with designers such as Lutz & Patmos for knits and Eugenia Kim for hats.

“It’s part of our moving forward and staying fresh,” added Krakoff of the burgeoning categories. “We’re starting to add more clothing.” The coats will be available in Coach stores starting in August.
