The thoughts that come to mind when you page through the glossy, celebrity-filled pages of Cosmopolitan, Shape, GQ or Glamour. The answers come in the form of digital plastic surgery. In addition to the dietitians, trainers, stylists, hair and makeup teams and radical pressure to uphold the skewed and artificial American standard of beauty, behind every celebrity is a talented and seasoned retoucher. With the help of Photoshop, faces are contoured, cleavage is shadowed, fat is sucked away and muscles are defined with the strategic use of a few very powerful digital tools. Read more…

Exasperated by these repeated questions and the strange, modern-day beauty ideals in our country, five FashionIndie editors went under the Photoshop knife. That’s to say, we were pinned, tucked, pulled, chopped and airbrushed by the very talented photographer Christopher Hall to show you that, with the right team, anyone can be on the cover of an American magazine.

We decided to duplicate the poses of contestants on an America’s Next Top Model poster. As you scroll down, you will see the FashionIndie editors – Samantha Lim, Jessica Lapidos, McArthur Joseph, Lester Brathwaite and me, Amanda Gabriele – before and after the edits. The BEFORE images have the original backgrounds, the AFTER photos were pasted onto plain white. It can be difficult to see the changes without examining the large versions of the photos, so we encourage you to click on each one and check out the work we had done. Watch us transform before your eyes.

Now we are America’s next top models.

- Fellow A-lister George Clooney laid down the law on a trio of Italians who used Clooney’s name and image to launch their GC clothing line. Their one (of many) mistakes: Photoshopping Clooney in a pair of jean shorts. [Styleite]

The following is an imaginary conversation between Anna Wintour and Kristen Stewart as she shoots the February Vogue cover.

Anna: Kristen! Welcome to Vogue! Don’t be scared darling, I don’t bite — my second assistant does that for me. Kidding…except, not really.

If you saw my post last week, you know that model Irina Shayk claimed GQ Spain wrongfully photoshopped her as nude, when she said she actually was wearing clothes.

HOWEVER, GQ Spain is firing back. And they’re pretty convincing.

GQ Spain released a statement denying Shayk’s claims. The magazine says it has 15 witnesses who can testify that Shayk willingly took her clothes off. They have original images to back up their claims, too.

This begs the question: Who’s telling the truth here?

More importantly, what do YOU think?? Who’s lying here?

Sources informed FashionIndie today that Irina was shot for GQ Spain, and the model fell victim to PhotoShop fraud.

She WASN’T actually naked.

Irina did, in fact, pose for GQ Spain. But she did not pose nude.

After being shot in full lingerie, Irina found out later that someone had retouched the photos to make her appear in her “birthday suit” – a SERIOUS breach of her contract.

This make me sick! If a model prefers not to pose nude because of personal preferences or beliefs, a respectable magazine should honor her requests. Shame on you, GQ Spain!

Now write Ms. Shayk an apology, and go sit in time-out.

Not really sure what to make of this. Here’s Justin looking pretty for Toda Teen Star magazine. I think we have to assume from the plump pink lips and eyeliner that someone had a little too much fun with Photoshop this week.

Turns out, Alba kept to her word, and the above image shows that her bra and panties in the original cut of the film were digitally removed for its release.

And also a a few lbs were shaved off around her midsection too.

Welcome to the future of hypocrisy! What difference does it make if Alba’s actually nakey or not? Guys (and some ladies) will still whack off to it, regardless.

Meanwhile, I can’t wait for this technology to come to real life so I can walk down the street and Photoshop clothes off anyone I choose. That will be a magical day.

They’re both modeling Ralph Lauren, natch!

In case you need a refresher, the woman on the right is Filippa Hamilton, former Ralph Lauren muse and model who was photoshopped within an inch of her life for the brand’s ad campaign in 2009. Hamilton later told The Today Show she’d been fired for being too fat.

The woman on the left, however, is Tao Okamoto, who is modeling what just so happens to be a Ralph Lauren Black Label Polo for Nordstrom.com.

We’re not saying there’s a connection. We’re just saying.

Anyway, we can’t figure out why brands, retailers, and magazines continue to airbrush their models so egregiously — and always in the same Gumby-waisted way. Jezebel has some photos of what Okamoto looks like with her real-life anatomy in place, which is to say: slim, like a model, but also human.

Lindsay Lohan plans to get naked to promote her newly expanded 6126 line of handbags next month, but there may be one accessory she can’t strip off without a court order: her alcohol-monitoring anklet.

The question of how to make the SCRAM go scram has become the pre-shoot dilemma for the business partners in her accessories line.

Richard Luna of The California Bag, which licenses the 6126 bags, told Los Angeles magazine that the legally troubled La Lohan is booked to roll around bare in bed for an ad campaign shoot next month. As for the SCRAM, he told the mag, “We’re thinking of having the police on hand so we can remove the ankle bracelet for the pictures.”

Um, good luck convincing Judge Marsha Revel, the jurist presiding in Lohan’s ongoing violation-of-probation court case, that the struggling actress can lose the sensitive device for a nanosecond.

Luna told the magazine it’s also possible Lohan might be photographed with and without the device, but if that’s a legal no-go, perhaps the SCRAM could be airbrushed out of the photographs in post-production.

The 6126 handbags are scheduled to hit department stores this fall and will retail from $200 to $600 (SCRAM not included).

The SCRAM-cam dilemma was addressed by Lohan herself last month when she flaunted the anklet — as if it were handpicked by a discerning stylist — during a shoot (shown above) with photographer Tyler Shields for his upcoming book, “The Dirty Side of Glamour.”

Then again, it would not be the first time there has been legal drama associated with Lohan or her photo shoots. The last time a photographer snapped images for the 6126 bags, he sued the actress in a payment dispute.

And StyleList hears Bravo’s reality cameras caught more drama on the set of its new docu-series “Double Exposure” when Lohan was temporarily missing in action for her date with celebrity photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani. (Tune in to tonight’s episode for the late-to-the-set details.)

NY based French photographer Michel Tcherevkoff had a revelation when he saw a photograph of a leaf he had shot for a client, turned upside down on his table and thought it looked just like a shoe. He scanned the image, added a heel, and that became the first Shoe Fleur.

Remember this Louis Vuitton ad from a few seasons ago that featured a nearly flawless Madonna in bunny ears? We’ll more images are surfacing of the Material Mom without all the digital magic of photoshop. The unedited photos after the jump.

Usually magazines make people look smaller, not bigger!

Healthy, a magazine that promotes “health and wellbeing”, has come under fire for adding weight onto their April cover model Kamilla Wladyka (unshopped on the right) to make her look more curvy!

Editor of the mag, Jane Drucker revealed during a round-table debate “She was so thin, we had to put on about half a stone.”

Then why did they even hire her to begin with!?

Drucker explains she was healthy looking the week before during a casting, but was too thin on the day of the shoot. She added:

“Sometimes when you cast a model, they look OK, but then when they turn up on the shoot day, they might not have eaten for two or three days. You’re not in charge of their health. When she did arrive, there were plenty of clothes that we couldn’t put on her because her bones stuck out too much. She looked beautiful in the face, but really thin and unwell. That’s not a reflection of what we do in our magazine, which is about good health and women looking healthful and well. She was a stunningly beautiful girl and we knew what we were able to do with retouching. We made her legs a little bit bigger, to make her look like she was a size 10 as opposed to a size 4. It’s not what we normally do and I would never want to mislead people.”

But that’s exactly what you did Jane! You mislead your readers!

If a model showed up to a shoot for a health magazine and appeared too thin, why not turn her away and hire a new model? Sure the magazine may lose some time and money over it, but anything would be better than lying to your readers!

Though Britney did sign off to appear in Candie’s latest ad campaign, there is one thing she certainly did not agree to; photoshopped images. The 28-year-old has refused to give up on her fight and after a long and hard battle, the star finally agreed to have her photoshopped images shown next to her untouched images as a statement of their own. I’d say it’s a pretty impressive win.

New ads for Nintendo DS Style Savvy video game features a nearly unrecognizable Beyonce. The singer/actress looks more like a statue than a human being in these shots which is an effect that was either caused by a blurry camera or a really dedicated photoshopper.

Does this photo look familiar? It should, cause it’s nearly exact to the Demi Moore cover of W magazine. Wait, not NEARLY exact. IT IS EXACT!!!

Just a few weeks after Ralph Lauren’s beyond photoshoprexic model hit the magazines, W Magazine has performed the greatest crime against women of all, putting the head of 47 YEAR OLD DEMI MOORE on the body of 26 YEAR OLD Anja Rubik!!! If ever there is a time for women of a certain age (or Anja Rubik) to stand up and scream in outrage, NOW IS THAT TIME.

It also seems like they took some time to make sure the geriatric Demi looked more like a teenageer in the face as well. I get plastic surgery, I even applaud women who get it in moderation, but photoshop is the devil. There is no way in hell Demi looks like Megan Fox. Why are you doing this to us Conde Nast?

Ralph Lauren’s legal team is in full gear, threatening online publishers for displaying the American designers latest photoshop disaster. We’ve got the image for you right after the jump.

There’s thin and then there’s photoshop thin. Love how her torso is smaller than her head. Cause we all know that happens naturally.

Can’t wait until America decides to start labeling touched up images. Sometimes the effects of an over zealous image retoucher aren’t so easy to see.

With magazines and advertisements constantly in front of our eyes, we’re often confronted with the image of those picture perfect models. But when Twiggy’s Oil for Olay ads hit stands in Britain, there seemed to be quite an uproar about that picture perfect image. Lawmakers were concerned about the effect Twiggy’s photoshopped image could eventually have on young girls. Though this isn’t the first time Britain has been concerned with faux images, it seems as though this time they’re really making the effort to ban them.

We all remember Beth Ditto’s voluptuous nude body on the cover of the debut issue of LOVE magazine. The fashion world has taken Beth under their wing as their token plus-size obsession in an attempt to dispel rumors that they only put 85-pound models on their covers. The spread is almost amateur, sometimes blurry or shadowed, enhancing the naturally grounded appeal of a girl lucky enough to wear couture. What a breath of fresh air in an age where photoshop ruins everything natural about….well…everything.

The Daily Mirror’s 3AM Girls have uncovered a horrid, yet not surprising truth. THIS ENTIRE IMAGE IS A LIE!!!

In a behind-the-scenes documentary, The September Issue, fearsome Vogue editor Anna Wintour claims Miller is too “toothy” and staff were worried she has “too many fillings” and “unruly hair”….

 

The documentary shows how the actress was airbrushed within an inch of her life for the shoot with famed photographer Mario Testino back in 2007. They then took one photo of her face and super-imposed it on a separate picture of her body.
