Known for rodeos and corn conversations at the local Wal-Mart, Abilene isn’t exactly a fashion capital of the world.

Three stores were responsible for trademark infringement on brands including Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Polo and Tommy Hilfiger, among others.

This is a start in the counterfeiting fight. But next time, the Feds need to focus on a more fashion savvy locale.

The only ones intimidated by this shake down were a handful of sleepy cattle.

Now, you may be thinking: “WTF, you just said t-shirt, shorts, sandals!”  But come on, guy, you don’t want to look like schlubby just because you don’t have to head into the office.  But how to wear nice things without getting drenched in sweat?  We’ll cover two looks.

#1: Look Ma, No Buttons!

You CAN wear a t-shirt on your day off, just make sure it’s the right one.  A safe choice is always the polo.  It serves the same purpose as a regular tee but with that little added dash of class without having to spring for a full on buttondown.  On top of that, it’s not really a specialty item: almost every company has a wide selection of patterns and designs.  Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about the thickness of the material as very few, if any, labels are going to be making winter-ready s/s polos.  That would be madness.

Fellow blog Street Etiquette recently did a little write-up on the polo specifically, so for a more in-depth discussion definitely check that out.  Below is an Original Penguin polo marked tremendously down that will help you dress tremendously up.

Now what to wear to cover up the ol’ bulge?  Do not be afraid to wear short shorts, friends.  There is really only one reason men should be wary of showing off a little thigh and that is if the thigh in question is ungodly white.  However, how can this situation be remedied if white thigh’s not given a chance to become tan thigh?  Toss on a pair of these Ralph Lauren golf shorts, cuff those bad boys, and you’re 2/3 there.

I say 2/3 there because now it’s onto the shoes.  Please, for the love of God, do not wear sandals.  Unless you get pedicures on the reg, unless your feet are hairless, your toenails impeccably clean, cut, and unchipped, nobody wants to see your feet.  Let’s not forget that if you’ve got to walk, it’s a recipe for blisters and black soles at the end of the day.  Opt for something comfortable and low-cut instead.  TOMS should do the trick.The navy hue shouldn’t make the outfit too overwhelmingly blue while navy and khaki go together like Ivy and League.  Kudos on look #1!

#2 Muscle Beach

Tank tops can be done in a variety of ways: country-ass, oversharing, Mac from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, or just right.  Like polos, they come in all sorts of styles, patterns, and designs.  Go with something cut traditionally (i.e. not slouching so a nip-slip is all but inevitable), and go with a summery pattern–something nautical, patriotic, or environmental.This tank from Obey is a perfect example.  Just sailor-y enough, not too French.  Also, it’s not so low-cut that it would look much more appealing on your sister, and the straps (for lack of a better word) aren’t so wide that it looks like you should be sporting a mullet and guzzling some Old Milwaukee.  Wonderful.

For the sake of brevity (and to save those dolla dolla bills), you can even stick with the same shorts above, and the TOMS work well here too, complimenting the pink nicely.

In the tradition of past pieces, there’s an abundance of contrasted pipings, linings, and lapels.  Check the seemingly denim lapels on the blazers.  Also note the brilliant colors, eye-catching without being overbearing.  It’s all in the details, homey.

Also, simple but elegant oxford shirts, again with gorgeous color choices.  Nothing overly garish a la some of the stuff in Ervell’s most recent collection.  On top of that, it looks like they’ve once again collaborated with shoemaker Pierre Hardy on a pair of shoes: two-tone suede derbies.  So hot right now.  More in the gallery.

I am in love with this campaign because it is so retro and brings back the image that I always thought Ralph Lauren represented.

DickChicken is making his rounds in the East Village and I’ve spotted two of his new tags on 5th Street and Great Jones. This Polo mock is definitely on of the better of the two. Love it DC! Hopefully, PussyHam gets in on the action soon.

I must admit that before this weekend, the extent of my knowledge about the sport of polo revolved around what I’d discerned from the Ralph Lauren logo—I knew there were horses and mallets involved, but that was it. After venturing this weekend to Bridgehampton for the Opening Day of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge, I still know nothing about the sport, but I have learned that it’s the quintessential Hamptons society activity during the summer.

Polo in Bridgehampton is hardly about who wins or loses—I don’t think that anyone even pays attention to the announcer—it’s about which spectator has the best time—and looks the best while doing it. Held every Saturday at the Blue Star Jets Field up until August 22nd, the fabulous and famous crowd together beneath the white tents for some polo watching and some people watching. The latter was what most interested me so I was out observing the fashions.

Instead of the wide hats and Oscar de la Renta dresses I half-expected to see, women dressed much more casually, preferring sundresses and the sort. Surprisingly, most of the peacocking came from the men, who sported a wonderful array of colors. White jeans were predictably popular, along with tailored sports coats and bright accents. It was really all about the color, and it was refreshing to see so many men dress so boldly.

Guests mingled and enjoyed the beautiful weather, fueled by libations from the open bar as well as an assortment of snacks and hors d’oeuvres. I personally couldn’t get enough of the mini cupcakes passed around in the VIP tent—I must have eaten an entire passed tray throughout the two-hour-long event. Celebrity wattage came from famous faces like Star Jones, Chase Crawford (who hosted last year’s opening), Beth Ostrosky and several realty TV stars.

Even though I was a polo neophyte, I still knew about star player Nacho Figueras from the Ralph Lauren fragrance ads and so the day’s highlight may just have been spotting him in the front of the Ralph Lauren Black Watch tent. And yes, he’s just as beautiful in person as he is in those pictures.
