“Fake goods aren’t totally bad, at least it created jobs at some counterfeit factories,” Bertelli said in a Bloomberg television interview on Thursday. “We don’t want to be a brand that nobody wants to copy.”

Such sentiment may come as a surprise from one of the top 10 most valuable luxury brands in the world, and unsurprisingly warranted some elaboration. A Prada spokesman used the oft-popular “taken out of context” excuse, telling WWD, “The quote is part of an extended conversation that underscored how the market of counterfeits is an objective reality for successful brands and how this phenomenon has its own reality, also in terms of manufacturing, that is very structured.”

Global research company Millward Brown Optimor conducted the study based on a brand’s overall performance as well as consumer interviews.

Coming in second place is Hermès, which Vuitton’s parent company — LVMH Moët Hennessy — has made no bones about wanting to acquire by snatching up any and all available stock over the past few years. And no wonder, Hermès  stepped its game up by a staggering 61% to $19.1 billion.

The Rolly’s apparently on many arms and the Chandon is flowing freely as both Rolex ($7.17 billion) and Moët Chandon made the top 10, which also includes Chanel ($6.68 billion), Gucci ($6.42 billion), Prada ($5.7 billion), Cartier ($4.8 billion) and Burberry ($4.09 billion). [Vogue UK]

The foundation will help support young art and fashion talent, a cause Blow, who took her own life in 2007, would no doubt celebrate. The late editor and muse is largely credited for discovering fellow iconoclast and suicide victim Alexander McQueen.

But onto the bright side of things. Guinness raided her closet and chose key pieces which best defined her distinctive style, featuring the likes of Chanel, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Prada, Christian Lacroix, Alaïa, Gareth Pugh, Christopher Kane and of course McQueen. The auction will take place on June 27 with a goal of earning £100,000 (about $160,000), but before then Christie’s will put the couture on public display on June 23.

Prada had its “best year ever,” according to CEO Patrizio Bertelli,– a year that includes the debut of the luxury firm’s IPO on the Hong Kong stock exchange. With a 72% increase in profits to €432 million (or about $577,324,768 at current exchange rates) thanks in large part to sales of shoes and handbags to Asian consumers and revenues totaling €2.6bn (about $3,462,388,818), Prada is now on par with the likes of Hermès.

Ferragamo also went public last year, albeit locally in Milan, and its profits surged almost 70% to €100 million (about $133,216,482) with record sales to Asian, Brazilian and American customers. But Versace perhaps has the biggest reason to celebrate.

Donatella and co. finally turned a profit after three years and a near financial collapse, with earnings of €8.5 million (about $11,324,004) last year; up from a  loss of €21.7 million (about $28,909,517) in 2010. Unlike Prada and Ferragamo, Versace accomplished this sans an IPO and does not plan on going public anytime soon.  Rather, CEO Gian Giacomo Ferraris credits the growth to sales in emerging markets, particularly Greater China.

Capitalizing on their international appeal, all three Italian firms plan on expanding their sphere of influence around the world. Prada has 80 store openings in the works for 2012 and 2013 — adding to the 75 stores it opened last year — while Versace plans on opening stores in New York, Los Angeles, Asia and the Middle East and Ferragamo is launching ecommerce in Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico and Canada.

With the amount of air brushing going on these days, models in magazines look nearly good enough to hang in the Louvre. Their skin so dewy, their teeth so white and their eyes so clear, so it only make sense that the fashion world is rediscovering the lost art of illustration.

Back in the good ole days, names like Joe Eula, Antonio Lopez and Kenneth Paul Block would cross the pond to sketch the latest looks coming out of Paris to be featured in WWD and Vogue amongst others. Illustrators also worked closely with department stores such as Bonwit Teller and Lord & Taylor as well as other high end boutiques who wanted that certain pizzazz in their ads and catalogues.

Many of the great illustrators of those days have since gone to the great sketchbook in the sky, but luckily a new brigade of sketchers is cropping up. We recently met Katy Smail and were lured in by her dark and mysterious fashion damsels. Her playful animal sketches are equally mysterious and amusing. Read on to hear how this Scot ended up in Manhattan, her dream clients and who the hell this woman is she keeps drawing.

Miuccia Prada is ranked 139th among the world’s ten-figure ballers with an estimated worth of $6.8 billion, thanks in part to Prada’s IPO on the Hong Kong stock exchange last year. Meanwhile, Miuccia’s husband and business partner Patrizio Bertelli takes a backseat with a paltry $3.7 billion.

Giorgio Armani‘s $7.2 billion fortune brings him in at #127 on the list with $7.2 billion while Ralph Lauren ties with Chanel owners Alain and Gerard Wertheimer at #122 with an estimated worth $7.5 billion.

The designers are unique on the list as most billionaires in fashion are the muckety-muck of the companies that own the labels, such as PPR‘s François Pinault (#59, $13 billion); Unqilo‘s Tadashi Yanai (#88, $10 billion); H&M‘s Stefan Persson (#8, $26 billion); and LVMH‘s Bernard Arnault, who for the second year in a row is the richest man both in fashion and in Europe, as well as the fourth richest person in the world with a net worth of $41 billion.

German-born designer Jil Sander founded her eponymous label in 1968 and served as its creative director until 2000, a year after Prada bought a 75% stake in the company. Sander butted heads with Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli and resigned as creative director and chairwoman, nearly all of her design and production team leaving with her.

The Jil Sander label then suffered, creatively and commercially, reporting its first ever net loss at $9.4 million. Bertelli had once said  ”A brand as strong as Jil Sander doesn’t need to rely on the name of a designer,” but there he was, figuratively on his hands and knees, negotiating a truce with Sander, who returned in 2003 to head the label. But that truce too proved short-lived and Sander wiped her hands of Bertelli and Prada for good in 2004.

In 2005, Raf Simons was brought in to replace Sander as creative director to great effect and just a year later Jil Sander was sold to British private equity firm Change Capital Partners for $120 million. Simons has successfully reinvigorated the brand while remaining true to its minimalist roots, making it a hit with both critics and consumers alike, and as a result his contract with the brand was recently extended for an unknown period.

However, Gala, a German tabloid, reports that Sander, now 68, could return to the house she built over 40 years ago in as little as four weeks, making way for an announcement — perhaps during Paris Fashion Week — that would finally silence the rumor mill and put a nail in the coffin of Gallianogate. Take the flirting to the men’s urinal where it belongs and step aside for your fellow drunk. It’s called “courtesy” and “not being a douchebag.”

2. Tip your bartender. Aside from securing good karma, a well-tipped bartender is far more likely to see you when you’re flopping up to secure your next drink.

3. Double fist your way through. An open bar  is not a marathon, it’s a sprint. Ordering two drinks allows you to get as wasties as possible as quickly as possible and cuts back on the amount of time you’ll have to stand in line. Also, you’ll look pretty badass.

4. Last call calls for shots. Most open bars are only one or two hours — a half an hour is an insult and anything over two hours is pure magic — so when last call inevitably rolls around, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Tequila shots and Jäger bombs guarantee a superstar finish. Or at least an evening groping your way through a K hole.

The Trench While it's not necessarily sub-zero, it's not Miami in August either, but a trench is a coat for all seasons.

The Fur A floor-length fur coat might be a little overkill -- PETA joke! -- but if Rachel Zoe has taught us anything it's that a fur vest is not only always appropriate, it's practically mandatory.

The Man Bag While the inside of your bag may look like the dumpster behind a pharmacy, at least the outside can appear elegant...or at least coherent. Which will be more than can be said about you come the week's end.

The Clutch No one wants to be weighed down with a million bags like some homeless woman on her way to the market so why look like one? An oversized clutch is sleek and can carry anything from line sheets and gift bags to cocaine and a purse gun.

The Loafer Who needs a rough and rugged boot when a loafer says you're too much of a pimp to even care what anyone has to say?

The Closed-Toe Pump There's no snow to trudge through, so practicality can take a backseat while a stiletto takes the wheel -- but spare your toes the cold and cover up...unless you're wearing nude pantyhose. In which case, do not pass Go and do not attend NYFW.

The Spectators There's nothing like a fake pair of eyeglasses to lend a false sense of sophistication and if you're actually blind as a bat, you're already ahead of the curve. And the class.

The Shades Whether you're hiding the dark circles from too much partying and not enough sleep, or hiding from that regrettable hook-up the morning after, sunglasses are very necessary.

The Gentlefellow Even if you're not a gentleman -- and chances are if you're reading this site you're probably not -- you can play the part with a well-tailored suit.

If a downtown art-house darling were to dress up as a 1940s screen siren, she'd pluck her wardrobe from Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez's spring collection: retro Hawaiian florals with skin-baring cutouts and A-line eelskin skirts in geek-out stripes. She'd carry only the essentials, and for that there's a burnt sienna camera bag to swing from the wrist.

Prada's pastel swing coats, bandeau tops and pleated skirts feel youthful and reminiscent of a decadent summer spent among the spiky palms and expansive vistas of 1950s Southern California. For a touch of playful, drive-in theater cheekiness, there are clutches and heels tricked out with silhouettes of classic cars.

Sweet is sexiest when there's a hint of deception. At Louis Vuitton, icy-blue bags and acid-yellow mules complement nipped-waist dresses, drowning in oversize plastic daisies and peekaboo broderie anglaise. Going this fluffy is actually an act of boldness.

For a woman who prefers straight-lined minimalism to convey a sense of understated power, Phoebe Philo offers the allure of androgynous fashion -- and this brick-red envelope clutch. This is what cool looks like right now.

This season, Raf Simons explores a slightly eerie, repressed side of femininity. Neon paisleys, lavender gingham skirt suits, white nurse shoes and structured patent frame bags are pieces that feel both innocent and complicated.

Kress comes with a long list of luxury credits to his name — before Prada, he was managing director and CEO of Bulgari North and Latin America and president of Fendi North America. The Olsens, clearly impressed with his haute history, created the post especially for him.

“His experience and sensibility will add great value to The Row in its next phase of development,” Ash told WWD. Then MK chimed in, “He quickly became the obvious choice for us and for the brand, having experience in multiple categories which we feel is essential for growth of The Row.”

“Miuccia Prada is honoured and proud to take part in this exhibition which is ‘an impossible’ conversation between Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli,” a brand spokesperson said. ”The comments printed are taken out of context and therefore misconstrued. Mrs. Prada confirmed that she admires the total curatorial independence of the museum to the extent that they almost did not take into consideration her vision.”

Yeah, it’s totally plausible that “I told them, but they don’t care” was a funny aside said with a self-deprecating chuckle and a playful roll of the eyes. And it’s totally plausible that after making these “out of context” statements, Miuccia went around slapping every underling that dared to even breathe in her general direction, which — when taken out of context — seems like a violent outburst but is really just a little thing the house of Prada does for kicks. Wasikowska, who once told Vogue UK that she was ”not sure about becoming a campaign star” and that “it would depend on what brand is, what it was for…” fits nicely into the Miu Miu stable of starlets. And because the 23-year-old is of age and not allegedly in harm’s way, chances are her ads won’t be deemed “irresponsible.”

- Oooh-la-la…oh, no. No. French health authorities are recommending that 30,000 women who received potentially defective breast implants from a French company have them removed as a preventative measure. [NYT]

- Brittany Murphy‘s mother is claiming her daughter and son-in-law Simon Monjack were killed by toxic mold found in their Hollywood home. The mold apparently caused the pneumonia that killed both Murphy and Monjack and now Momma Murphy is taking legal action against her lawyers for mishandling her case against the construction company back in January.  Steven Meisel has once again taken on the job of beautifully creating another Prada’s campaigns.

The diverse casting of models with distinct characters such as the blonde bombshell or the noir heroine creates a utopian celluloid narrative. A virtual collage of feminine film iconography unfolds in this hyper-real gas station fantasy.

1. Paris Is Burning (1990) Set amidst the backdrop of 80s New York ball culture, Paris Is Burning is an exploration of beauty, race, sexuality, capitalism and the American Dream, all wrapped up in a dragtastic homage to the transformative powers of fashion. Also, where do you think Madonna learned to Vogue? See Also: To Wong Foo -- Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1994) Drag queens, yes; acute social commentary, not so much...but how can you argue with this? Oh, that's right, you can't.

2. The September Issue (2009) Step inside the hallowed halls of the fashion Bible that is U.S. Vogue. We get a rare glimpse of the woman behind the bob and Chanel sunglasses, as Anna Wintour admits with a palpable hint of regret that the distinguished members of her family think what she does is "quite funny." But it's Grace Coddington's bleeding artistic heart that stays with you throughout. See Also: Bill Cunningham New York (2010) Bill Cunningham, legendary streetstyle photographer for the New York Times has a Puritanical simplicity to his life but a couturier's eye for trends and detail that is documented in this tender portrait, featuring the likes of Wintour, Carmen Dell'Orefice, Anna Piaggi and Michael Kors.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Though not necessarily a film about fashion, Breakfast at Tiffany's is the quintessential fashion film. Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly continues to teach and inspire girls and certain boys everywhere on how to be chic, how to be urbane and how to live fabulously in New York -- or at least how to pretend. And there has never been a more iconic Little Black Dress ever put on screen. See Also: Darling (1965) Darling's Diana Scott is the British, unapologetically wanton version of Holly Golightly. A morally-suspect fashion model who sleeps her way to the top, Diana still manages to come off as a naïve and sympathetic character -- despite exhibiting behavior to the contrary -- thanks to Julie Christie's Oscar-winning portrayal.

4. Unzipped (1995) Sure, there are other backstage, behind the curtain, beneath the bustle documentaries of fashion designers, but none are as stylish as Isaac Mizrahi's Unzipped. When Isaac was the new, young It designer on the block; when Naomi, Cindy, Christy and Linda ruled the catwalks; when Eartha Kitt was still alive and purring -- Unzipped documents the height of 90s fashion, right before the balloon went bust. See Also: Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008) Whereas Unzipped follows a designer in the earlier stages of his career, The Last Emperor observes a master -- Valentino Garavani -- as he takes his final bow with his partner of 50 years by his side, Giancarlo Giammetti.

5. Funny Face (1957) Audrey Hepburn makes a return to the list, but this time she is the unlikely model Jo Stockton, a bookworm with an unconventional look that inspires love in photographer Dick Avery, played by Fred Astaire. A fantastic set of photoshoots and gowns by Hubert de Givenchy are the main attractions, but Kay Thompson as salty editrix Maggie Prescott could give Miranda Priestly a run for her money. See Also: The Women (1939) Though Funny Face features a climactic runway show, The Women spared no expense in shooting its nearly 10-minute fashion show in color, despite the entire film being in black and white. Do not mistake this classic with that awful remake Diane English regurgitated a few years ago.

6. Mahogany (1975) Arguably Diana Ross's greatest cinematic achievement -- if only for this -- Mahogany chronicles the rise of supermodel Mahogany from the slums of Chicago to the runways of Paris and finally to international acclaim as a designer in her own right, only to give it all up for the man she loves...a move Ms. Ross would openly spit upon, but which she plays with considerable believability. See Also: Gia (1998) While Mahogany is a fictional supermodel who dabbles on the dark side, Gia Carangi was the real thing whose excesses eventually got the best of her. The film is best remembered, however, for launching Angelina Jolie to stardom, thus ensuring Jennifer Aniston's lifelong ire.

7. Clueless (1995) What can one say about Clueless? The perfect teen movie, it's infinitely quotable -- "You're just a virgin...who can't...DROIVE." -- and is there a character with as enviable a closet as Cher Horowitz? Bonus points for first introducing me and perhaps a majority of the world to Azzedine Alaïa. See Also: The 2nd Season of Gossip Girl (2008-2009) With the possible exception of Mean Girls, there hasn't come along a teen movie as smart or as witty as Clueless. But in terms of style, the second season of Gossip Girl rose to the challenge, making fashion icons of Blair Waldorf and Serena Vanderwoodsen, as well as their real-life counterparts, Leighton Meester and Blake Lively.

8. Blow-Up (1966) Michelangelo Antonioni captures the mod mood of 60s Swinging London as a hedonistic fashion photographer -- played by David Hemmings -- tries to figure out whether or not he accidentally snapped a murder. In the film's most famous scene, 6'1 supermodel Veruschka writhes around the set of a photoshoot as Hemmings makes love to her with his camera. See Also: La Dolce Vita (1960) If Blow-Up swings, La Dolce Vita sways. Federico Fellini's romantic portrait of Rome is as sleek and stylish as protagonist Marcello Rubini's suits.

9. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) It's a matter of public record that Lauren Weisberger's roman à clef was based on Anna Wintour -- who famously wore Prada to the film's opening -- but what the film accomplishes (okay, let's be real, what Meryl Streep accomplishes) is creating not only one of the greatest villains, but also one of the greatest fashion icons, in modern cinema. See Also: Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) A completely unnecessary production and by the loosest definitions an actual "movie," Sex and the City also benefited from Pat Field's brilliant styling. But unlike The Devil Wears Prada, there was no Oscar nomination for attiring Carrie and Co.

10.Zoolander (2001) Everything benefits from a parody -- rather, everything benefits from a good parody, Though Zoolander is far from perfect, it's a fun and funny romp through fashion's ridiculous playground; complete with walk-offs, an evil Galliano-esque designer in Jacobim Mugatu and the introduction of Blue Steel into the cultural lexicon. And lucky for us, there's a sequel in the works thus righting everything with the world. See Also: Brüno (2009) Taking off where Ben Stiller catwalked off, Sacha Baron Cohen's flamboyant character traipsed through America, spreading his questionably fashionable and gratuitously gay, booty-shorted self from sea to shining seaman.

“The Great Designers” will also be accompanied by the book The Great Designers: Fashion’s Hall of Fame from A to Z, highlighting 500 of the museum’s masterworks by 100 of the 20th- and 21st-century’s most important designers. Publishing in April 2012, the book will include an essay by museum curator Valerie Steele on the history of fashion museums and exhibits,  along with short bios on the 100 designers. Following their ban on fellow underaged starlet Dakota Fanning‘s “sexually provocative” ad for Marc Jacobs‘ “Oh Lola!” fragrance, the ASA has deemed the Miu Miu ad “irresponsible” for depicting a child in an unsafe location.

Parent company Prada argues that the allegedly offensive photos is  ”part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and “based on the set of an imaginary film,” adding that Steinfeld ”could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way.” But considering her age, the ASA is standing their moral-high ground. Starring  as a series of deadly and devilish balloons, the devil has apparently moved on from wearing Prada to rubber.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery, aleXsandro and for another wonderfully inappropriate portrait.

Over 950 pieces of fine and costume jewelry, accessories, and decorative objects will be available for perusal and possible purchase – from Chanel, Christian Dior, and Cartier jewels; to handbags and shoes from Christian Louboutin, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Prada. Though of course that’s just the tip of the diamond-encrusted iceberg.

The full collection goes on view November 18, but a preview is available through Christies and e-tailer Moda Operandi. Then come Decmber 3, interested parties can begin to register for the auction itself.

So this holiday season, show that you really care with a gift from the vaults of Hollywood royalty. And instead of wrapping said gift and placing it under the tree —  storm into the room Christmas morning, rip off a pair of diamond earrings, plunk them in front of the giftee and breathlessly say, “These have always brought me luck.” Then clutch your figurative pearls and disappear as mysteriously as you came. Those familiar with smoking weed, aka ganja, aka reefer, aka Mary Jane, aka giggle leaf — which is certainly no one at FashionIndie — might recognize this as a “pipe.” One end is a bowl with a filter and the other end has a little bead that when unscrewed reveals the mouthpiece. But these little beauties aren’t just for marijuana — though if anyone asks you they’re solely for tobacco.

Innovative low-lives can hide any number of drugs in there “such as crack, heroin or prescription pills.” There’s nothing I love more than functional jewelry. And it comes in a necklace too!

For $40, you too can carry your drug habit in the open air, however my only gripe is the design. It’s so, how do you say, god awfully ugly. Maybe we can get Prada to make one out of crocodile and emeralds. How classy would you feel getting high on that supply? [Gawker via WTSP]
