Fashion’s Night Out Gets a Little Help from Its Friends

A slew of activities and appearances are scheduled for this year’s Fashion’s Night Out on September 8th, the details of which are available today on FashionsNightOut.com.

Let’s see, we have:

- Michael Kors celebrating his three decades at Bergdorf Goodman, along with live performances and their “BG Best in Show,” featuring designers such as Joseph Altuzarra, Reem Acra and Pamella Roland trotting down the runway with their dogs

- Live performances from Kelly Rowland and Joss Stone at Macy’s Herald Square, with appearances by Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Roy and Amar’e Stoudemire

- Rachel Zoe and Erin Wasson will show face at Bloomingdale’s

- Jade Jagger will launch her new jewelry line at Henri Bendel’s

- Lord & Taylor will have Solange Knowles on the turntables and an appearance by Ivanka Trump

- Saks Fifth Ave will feature appearances by the inimitable Tilda Swinton with Pringle of Scotland designer Alistair Carr and Central Saint Martins professor/Kanye West mentor Louise Wilson, while Ne-Yo performs and signs hats

Goodbye Scotland and Hannah MacGibbons, Clare Says Hello to Chloé

In the fashion industry’s grand game of musical chairs, the latest designer to officially take a new seat is Clare Waight Keller. She landed Hannah MacGibbon’s old seat at Chloé as the new Creative Director. Keller is moving from Pringle of Scotland, the company she nursed from a small Scottish knitwear company to an international luxury brand. And that’s exactly why Chloé wants her; her knack for innovative knits.

As Hannah MacGibbons moves on from her ten year tenure at Chloé, we will get to see how Clare Waight Keller’s vision evolves in this new house. Keller’s experience spans through top design houses: senior women’s designer at Gucci in the Tom Ford era, men’s design director for Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label, and her first job was women’s wear designer at Calvin Klein. Keller’s got it going on.

The aesthetic she’s honed at Pringle seems to be aligned with the concept of Chloé, and she will likely bring into focus the more technical aspect of knits. Her vision for dramatic capes and flowing yet fitted separates is sure to make her a welcome figure at the Chloé house. She brought the concept of luxury ready to wear to Pringle, just as Chloé introduced that concept to the world.

Besides, she fulfills Chloé’s anglophilic fem obsession. Aside from a unsuccessful s two-year tint with Swede Paulo Melim Andersson from 2006, it’s been Brit after Brit at the French design house: Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, Hannah MacGibbons and now Clare Waight Keller. Fancy that. Of course, those all succeeded his Royal Kaisership Karl Lagerfeld as he helmed the brand by freelance after the original designer, Gaby Aghion, from 1966 through the 70s.

I guess I didn’t get the memo, but according to the Fall 2010 runway shows, showering is so 2009. Designers like Alexander Wang, Acne, Pringle of Scotland, Jonathan Saunders and Cushnie et Ochs sent their models down the runways of Fall 2010 fashion week with greasy and grimy locks, but is the grease-ball trend anything an average, everyday fashionista could pull off? I’m not sure if the greasy hair trend is a sign of style or poor hygiene…

Tilda Swinton’s Like This

Time for yet another addition in perfume mania. Tilda Swinton, who’s also the face of Pringle of Scotland, will be making her first fragrance installment this May. Her scent, named Like This, will be released by Etat Libre d’Orange to join their immense and impressive collection of fragrances. It’s quite the wait until May, but with the expected hints of mandarin and ginger, we shouldn’t have any trouble holding on.

Pringles of Scotland Comical View of Fashion

The legendary “jumper” maker just released this comical cartoon which explains just how gay a sweater should be, why one-eyed drunks don’t belong on the runway, and why they make the best jumpers and everyone else is just crap.

Pringle of Scotland has commissioned artist David Shrigley to create a humorous short animated film about life behind-the-scenes at Pringle to celebrate the brands return to Milan Fashion Week.

The animation, showcased during Pringle of Scotland’s menswear show in Milan on 18th January, depicts the making of jumpers and cardigans over the past 195 year history of the Scottish brand.

The Pringle of Scotland Fall 2010 menswear collection has one major focus: texture. From furry gloves to quilted sweaters and nubby overcoats to leather scarves, designer Clare Waight Keller spiced up the centuries old label with several new-school trendy textures. But don’t be alarmed, the atypical Scottish argyle v-necks and kilt-like suit extensions made a grand appearance to tie the brand at its roots.

Take a look at the Pringle of Scotland Pre-Fall 2010 collection and you won’t need an explanation as to why I think designer Clare Waight Keller is a genius. It’s all about the abstract knitwear in this collection, and with the brilliant leather kilt (shown above) the collection is a spot-on excellent interpretation of the Scottish woman.

Coming forward with their Spring ’09 collection, Pringle of Scotland has let us in on a sense of innate style and flair. Each piece in the collection has a trendy feel with an undeniable twist of edge. Showing pants, dresses, shirts, and more, the level of variety throughout the collection is clearly shown. There are certainly a few pieces, which are much more simple, but stay stylish and creative at the same time.

Lydia Hearst is definitely not one of my favorite models. But I have to give it to her for looking pretty fierce in this ad for the Pringle of Scotland spring 09 campaign. I don’t know if it was the work of photographer Steven Meisel or the stylist who called for that hair, but it works for her. Now if only someone could get a different expression on her face.

Pringle of Scotland Thinks They’re “Indie-Cool”…Think Again!

I must say, I’m a pretty avid fan of the luxurious knitwear of Pringle of Scotland. I’ve always found their collections sophisticated, with a bit of edge, catered to the young and beautiful who can confidently wear their uniquely classy looks. To say that I recently lost all respect for the label would be an exaggeration, but Pringle of Scotland’s s/s 2009 campaign is disappointing on so many levels. The images haven’t been released yet, but creative director Clare Waight Keller has declared It-girls Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof and Lydia Hearst as the faces of the spring campaign. I understand that Pringle of Scotland’s aesthetic is “growing up girl chic,” but that doesn’t justify the use of annoying socialites to advertise. And by calling their aim “indie-cool,” they’re just giving indies a bad name. Never in a million years would I associate Daisy, Pixie or Lydia with us indies! To top off the poor choice, Waight Keller had this to say about her decision:

”For the spring/summer 2009 advertising campaign, the idea of using personalities with different perspectives on how to wear clothes due to their lifestyles was hugely appealing. I also loved the fact that all the girls are great friends who hang out together, making the shoot incredibly fun.”

Sorry, this statement is completely contradictory. If the clothes were to legitimately represent the lifestyles of these It-girls, they would be stitched with golden pretentious, bitchy, asshole thread. Hmm, is that what you want Pringle of Scotland?

The men’s campaign is a totally different ball game. At least they’re using the fresh, edgy faces of Ash Stymest and Gordie Walker. I’m assuming these boys were the responsibility of someone who at least knows how to pick models!

Their options are too safe, too old man, and just plain old boring. Not only am I going to give you some damn good alternatives, I’ll tell you where to get them and save you some cash too. Fashion Indie Recommends: Who goes hiking in New York City? Try these higher, yet comfortable boots for size. Tuck your pants into them, or wear your pants over top. It's called versatility people (H by Hudson $235 via Urban Outfitters)

Men's Style #12: Braided Belt (Bally $140)

Fashion Indie Recommends: Go long and tie it off. Commit to the full trench coat and be sure to get one with a belt so it doesn't look too baggy (Filius $450 via Refinery 29).

Fashion Indie Recommends: So this may be a bit more expensive, but undoubtedly worth it. This cool drooping neck sweater allows wearers to rock a cool sweater, or pull it up and over your head into a hood (reference image below)(Unconditional $278 via Oak)

Indies to Watch: Taylor Fuchs

What is not to love about the 21-year-old model on the rise? Taylor Fuchs is a volleyball playing, Saskatchewan native who was plucked off of the college court and signed by Public Image Worldwide in 2007. His chiseled jaw line, dreamy blue eyes, mysterious arched eyebrows and delicate pouty lips landed him a Steven Meisel ad for Pringle of Scotland and even coveted spots in Marc by Marc Jacobs and DKNY in 2007 New York Fashion Week. Recently, Fuchs made an editorial debut in Detail, photographed by Thomas Schenk, and made a leap from Public Image Worldwide to Wilhelmina Models. Fuchs will most likely walk several big name shows during this New York Fashion Week. So what if he looks like Peter Pan? Go ahead Mr. Fuchs, take me to Neverland.
