IMPORT ORIGINS: He designs in Paris, by way of Canada, but grew up  in Jordan of Jordanian/Syrian descent.

DEISGN SPECS: Unisex transformability is his calling card. With angular cuts and zippers that zip infinitely, his aesthetic rides the edge of mascu-femme.

FACT: While his runway looks may run into the thousands, he considers Rad Hourani his laboratory. RAD by Rad Hourani applies those concepts conceived in the lab to materials we mortals can (?) afford.

His asexual, aseasonal, no boundaries approach to design comes from no place or time at all. It evolves with his curiosity about clothing, how it can morph and what it can do. His pieces are forever basics for the non-conformist.

This year, Six Scents is paying tribute to precious childhood or adolescent memories–Mary Katrantzou‘s, for instance, recalls burnt matches and the summer breeze. For Hourani, that memory is sex. Which translates to the smell of…well…y’know…sperm.

I wanted something transformable, representing life from birth to death. The top note is baby powder mixed with the smell of sperm, but a sperm that is not necessarily vulgar or filthy. It’s more a smell you can’t put your finger on…Christopher [the perfumer] went as close to the sperm smell as possible and made it really elegant and beautiful.

Essentially, Hourani’s fragrance is the circle of life; the top note is the sensual, seedy scent of sperm–which actually kinda works. The softer second note, baby powder, represents infancy and leads into leather, evoking middle age. The final note of thick, heady incense has the funereal whiff of death. And with that, a spritz of perfume.

If you manage to get the very literal image of how one might collect sperm in perfume out of your head, Hourani’s scent is a gratifying, quite wearable, fittingly minimal statement.

This year, the project investigates the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. It features unisex fragrances from designers Alexis Mabille, Mary Katrantzou, Junn.J, Rad Hourani, N.Hoolywood and Ohne Titel in collaboration with perfumers from Givaudan.

Perhaps we weren’t as intuitive this season, but did anyone else see Lanphear at any other shows? I’m worried.

There are some shows that you just know are going to be amazing fashion week after fashion week, Rad Hourani is one of them. Going into the show my expectations were eagerly high, but not only were they met they were blown out of the water. A familiar swarm of black and leather looks marched down the runway at Milk Studios for the first half of the show, then a series of super shiny patent leather looks followed that resulted in jaws hitting the floor. While I could easily write at least another eight sentences about the collection it’s easier just to say that it was near perfection. Don’t believe me? Following the unveiling of Rad Hourani’s new line last July in New York City, the designer is now releasing the RAD by Rad Hourani collection on his newly inaugurated webstore, including online only exclusives as well as monthly additions.

I attended Rad Hourani’s Spring 2010 show back in the fall, and since then, I’ve been wondering where I can Hourani’s amazing knee-zip skinny jeans. In both men’s and women’s, these super skinny jeans have zip detailing just above the knee and can be worn both zipper and unzipped. Black jeans are a staple, so why not get a pair with a little more flair!

Devon Aoki, model and famed actress, steps in front of the lens again for Numero Tokyo. Sebastian Kim is reponsible for these amazing Lolita-esque images that will appear in the December 2009 issue of Numero Tokyo. After running into Miss Aoki at the Rad Hourani show during Fashion Week, I must she is absolutely stunning, and is just as beautiful in person as she is on film.

Rad Hourani was one of my most anticipated shows this season, and once again, it is not one to disappoint. Notorious for his black draping, weaving and slitting, Hourani gave us a lighter, Spring version with slit compression shorts, abstract zippered jackets and a handful of silver and white accent pieces. The collection was altogether space-age, the models looking alien with their greased back hair, boxy garb and matching heels. I’m sure every fashion forward person will agree that layering is key, so how about some credit where credit is due for Mr. Hourani, giving us layers while keeping the warm weather of Spring in mind. Kudos.

Corey and I started out in SoHo around 7, and ran into his friend Marilynn at the Grand.  After a few pink cocktails and a conversation with Kelly Cutrone about her selected footwear for workouts (cowboy boots),  we sorted out our itinerary for the rest of the night, hopped in a cab and headed to Rose Bar.  Apparently you can’t get in to Rose Bar without a reservation at the hotel after 9PM, and this was 9:30. Not a big deal considering the amount of places we knew for the night, so we headed to the Gates where our friends at Red Hot PR were hosting a party. I was told “it’s someone’s birthday party and then there’s some fashion party afterwards”…fashion? We’re in.

Hello Nole Marin! Nole made an appearance at the Gates last night (with his mother), and couldn’t stop staring at Corey, crush maybe? Or maybe he was considering a Corey finger puppet.  When the open bar ended, we’d met all sorts of people, and I had done my good deed by escorting in a guy on the street (only because the line was really long and he knew who Nole Marin was and that he was inside, this is someone that I want at a fashion party!), we headed over to Griffin. Who’s that we see?!

Mickey Rourke! And yes, he really does look like that in person.  Apparently Marilynn already knew the Mckster, and he told us he was going to the Griffin too, just not right then. We headed down to Tenjune, and apparently I look 12 so they didn’t want to let me in. Hi, I’m 21 not 12 Tenjune, and let me just tell you that all of those old men that are in there? They’d love me. I’ll get to that more later.  

So after being at Tenjune for a whole five minutes, we’d had more than we could stand and headed back towards Griffin and found ourselves at the center of the club, inches away from Mikey Rourke. Drinks were flowing, but not that heavily, we promise mom, and the live band was playing some good salsa music (I’ll have to get the photos from Marilynn of us dancing on the table in the middle of the club? haha), and then the night went down hill. Naturally, Mikey Rourke wouldn’t go out alone, he’d bring his manager and/or body guard to party alongside him and ‘pick up the slack,’ if you catch my drift. And that’s what they did.

A middle-aged man, maybe the same age as my dad, told me that he wanted to kidnap me…no, correction, he was GOING to kidnap me. Dude, I know I look 12, but I’m not a kid, you can’t kid-nap me. Luckily, we were inside of a loud, crowded club and it was easy to get lost in translation, so I went to my friends so they could save the day, and must’ve scared off the man three times my size and over twice my age. Well, almost. He found Marilynn and kidnapped her.

Round two, outside of the Griffin. 47-year-old man with a grey shag hairdo pins 21-year-old barely 5’0 and less than 100 lb girl in a corner. Am I supposed to think you’re cool because you manage Mickey Rourke, are just as old, and just as unattractive as he is? No, I don’t want to hook up with you. Ever. I’d rather throw up on myself. Somehow managed to run away, find Corey and say “we have to get out of here, NOW.” Problem is, where is Marilynn? “oh, she must be at the apartment,” says creepy old man. An hour or so later we finally save Marilynn, and walk to the train to go home (seeing as well all have to work in the morning). 5am, after falling asleep twice on the train and missing my stop, I decided to take a cab home, then slept on my futon using a towel as a blanket. 

Moral of the story: Stay away from old men.

Point of the story: MIKEY ROURKE’S MANAGER TRIED TO MAKE OUT WITH ME. EW.

Stop. Hammer time.  I love those sequined drop-crotch pants.  These guys both looked super fablous, and were perfectly outfitted together.  So many fashion people at the Rad Hourani event, but unfortunately the Fashion Indie cam died early into the night, but we were thrilled to at least be able to catch these dudes.

My jealousy for my fellow Fashion Indie workers has officially set in after realizing what I missed due to traveling at the end of Fashion Week. I was lucky enough to attend the Rad Hourani Spring Show in September, and when I realized I was going to have to give up my seat to a co-worker this season I was far from thrilled. The collection (as always) was a knock out! The wide variety of textures is what really makes this collection do appealing, while the aesthetic has me aching with sadness from missing the show. I will forever love Rad Hourani’s collection, and though going into every show you can expect to see an all black collection, it doesn’t matter because his work is still so amazing.

With Fashion Week only three days away, we can hardly contain our excitement! Although many of you won’t be able to join us at the tents, you can look forward to the Fashion Indie crew bringing the tents to you! Prepare to mark Fashion Indie as your homepage, because Friday marks a week of extensive Fashion Week coverage. From runway rundowns to event reviews and moments of style to celebrity run-ins, Fashion Indie is brining everything Fall/Winter 2009 to a computer near you! Rad Hourani produced one of my favorite shows during Fashion Week, and his work has always intriqued me. He recently sat down to talk about his inspiration for designing.

No school. No teachers. No telly. No boundaries. No formatting. I like the idea of a world that we could live and shape by ourselves, only by observing.

They are asexual, aseasonal, they come from no place, no time, no tradition, yet they could be home anywhere, anytime.

they exude a sense of discreet chic, the essence of timeless style, drawn on a monochromatic and graphical canvas. Palette of blacks, touches of pure whites and intense reds. Sophisticated modern classics for anti-conformist individuals.

Almost a week later, and we still have runway photos surfacing in our office from Fashion Week. This time it’s Rad Hourani who put on another stunning display of fashion with an all black collection. The lack in color was completely rectified by his use of fabrics and materials, which allowed each individual piece to stand out. In an all white studio, with a long winding runway, viewers eyes were obviously glued on the tall models in all black. The show was great and the clothes were equally as good.
