What has been your favorite stone as of late? 

Bismuth crystal.  We don’t technically get to work with it because it’s too brittle, but we take natural pieces of it, slice it up and refine it, cast it in brass and then plate it with PVD titanium that is hit with a laser to create the same multicolored, psychedelic feel that the natural stone has.  I’m officially obsessed.

Where’s the most fascinating place you’ve found your raw materials?

Arusha, Tanzania.  Rajasthan in India is a close second.

Wintour and Vogue have reportedly been “instrumental” in coercing assembling the 22 designers, including Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Alexander Wang, Tracy Reese, Joseph Altuzarra, Rachel Roy, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone and Jason Wu. Wary of alienating Republican voters from their brands, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton initially nixed their labels from participating in Runway to Win, but Marc Jacobs — of which LVMH owns a majority stake — designed his T-shirt anyway, “following pressure from the magazine,” according to WWD.

On the other hand, Donna Karan, also owned by LVMH, did not bow to Wintour and is therefore not participating in the fundraising effort. And therefore won’t be seen in Vogue anytime soon…Kidding!…Not really.

Runway to Win’s e-commerce site, runwaytowin.com, officially launches on Thursday, but Wintour’s re-election campaign is not stopping there. She will also co-host an Obama fundraiser with actress Scarlett Johansson in February — which I’m taking as a sign that ScarJo will be on the cover around that time. See, kids, and you thought fashion and politics had nothing in common. They both require a steely nerve, a willingness to compromise and the ability to turn a blind eye to corruption. What is an absolute must-have for your Memorial Day getaway?

The Hamptons is going to be swarming with the rich and fabulous. It is important that you always look posh and put together even if you’re getting plastered in the middle of the day. I recommend this Ben Minkoff weekender. It’s simple, durable, and can hold a champagne bottle or two. (And yes I know from experience.) One of your essentials should include a Ralph Lauren polo. (The staple of the prep wardrobe) An Orlebar Brown bathing suit is the way to go shorts wise. (Even if you’re not swimming you can wear these as shorts all day and look stylish.) Finally you’ll need a pair of  Sperry boat shoes. (Duh!) Don’t forget to bring a blazer just in case and daddy’s credit card.

The Jersey Shore is always a hot spot during the summer months and Memorial Day weekend is probably one of the craziest times it gets. As a Jersey native I have to say that  people were going to down the shore (As we Jerseyans put it) before Snooki and The Situation took over with a camera crew. That being said a Quiksilver duffle is what you want to pack. It can take a beating and be fulled to over capacity with all your weekend needs. While you’re at the beach or walking on the boardwalk these American Eagle shorts have both fashion and function without calling negative attention to whoever is wearing them. Speaking of the boardwalk you can stroll comfortably down it in these Ugg sandals. Lastly you’ll need something nice to impress at the club and an Armani Exchange dress shirt will do the trick. Just make sure you’re tan and party ready.

Fire Island is a major gay destination on the East Coast if you didn’t know. The island is known for it’s nonstop parties and debauchery. If you go this Rag & Bone bag says “I’m here, I’m queer, & I have taste: Get Used To It!”  I recommend packing light since it seems that many of the people running around are not in that much clothes. That’s why this Baskit trunk is totally appropriate. There are a lot of outdoor activities so go for a pack of American Apparel tanks so you have something light and simple that can transition from day to night. Finally I recommend these GAP flip flops:they’re inexpensive, versatile and perfect for a beach day. Remember to leave your heavy layers and inhibitions behind.

For some unfathomable reason, there hasn’t been an inordinate amount of ZOMFG-ery and internet freakouts over the recent opening of Rag & Bone’s online store.  Nevertheless, it’s here and it’s about time.  Finally joining other late-arrivals like Band of Outsiders and Patrik Ervell, now everyone can get a piece of the CFDA-award winning brand’s goods.

Now while this development may piss off fashionista’s hung up on exclusivity, it bodes well for those across the country and world who don’t have the means or the driver’s license to head to bastions of fashion.  Good on ya, R&B.  If only it hadn’t taken so damn long.  And had men’s clothing.  Curses!

LINK LOVE: Racked

First off, there are a few styles and materials that you’re going to have to give the kiss of death to.  It might be sad, it might get uncomfortable, but you can all reconcile once the cooler months roll through.  First off, forget skinny pants.  Secondly, say goodbye to regular denim.  And most importantly, no matter how tempting, avoid any and all combinations of the two.

It gets hot enough with your skin on so why would you add what ostensibly amounts to another layer of heavier, less breathable flesh?  The only possible reasons: you’re a masochist and/or you really like the ‘just peed myself’ look that sweaty pants bring.

So what pants to wear, then, without looking like you’re a big fan of Jnco jeans?  There’s a world of options out there, friends!  And many of them are quite cost friendly.  Let’s take a quick look at three that’ll do you some good.

1. Dockers Ankle Chino

Dockers?  Yes, Dockers.  The brand’s been making a major comeback of late with tons of collaborations, new cuts and fits, and a plethora of new colors.  These chinos are a perfect example.  Not too slim, coming in six different colorways, and at a mucho-friendly price of $54.  Lord knows you’re gonna be cuffing these bad boys, as the New York Times told us a few years late, so the fact that they’re a little short is just icing on the khaki cake.

2. Topman Blue Chambray Crop Chinos

Chambray is one of the go-to fabrics for summerwear due to how lightweight it is and it’s also a nice alternative to denim.  These pants share many of the same characteristics of the aforementioned Dockers but with a few more details here and there, and a little dressier look.  At $80, you’re looking at a nicely cut, lightweight pant similar to to this pair by Rag & Bone.  With the two bills you save, why not treat yourself to an air conditioner?  A hundred gallons of ice cream?  A trip to Antarctica.

3. Gant Rugger Melange Chinos/Velour Baggy Chinos

And it’s not just the oh-so-dreaded fast fashion brands that are putting out cost-effective wares.  Check out these similarly priced offerings from Gant and Velour.  Both are slim, lightweight, and most importantly a light color to bounce the sun off instead of inviting the heat in.  Best of all, the light blue is perfect to go along with the vibrance of summer wherever you may be.

So there you have it!  Keep the denim handy for when September rolls around, mind your tweeds and wools so you can do your best Mad Men impression (I guess?) when the time comes, but for now, for the sake of comfort, try these on for size.  And maybe send a couple bucks thisaway with what you would’ve otherwise paid.  No?  OK.

The movie follows Kitano as a Japanese gangster who wants out.  His bosses, however, want him to pull one last job out in Okinawa.  As with most last jobs, things go horribly awry leading Kitano and his team to hide out on the beach.  Once there, a lot of non-action happens, but much like Wong Kar-Wai does, Kitano manages to make this non-action incredibly beautiful.

Like every Film Friday entry, there are suits galore.  And like with most Film Fridays, it’s all about the fit and all about the details.  Even in the noir darkness, one can see that this plain blue blazer fits Kitano well.  And his colleague’s jacket, while it has gigantic lapels, is the perfect shade of grey for Spring or Summer, much like this Marc Jacobs blazer or these from Rag & Bone and Jil Sander.

Somehow, certain characters in the film manage to even make the most atrocious pieces look presentable if not downright stylish.  Check out this minor character’s tie, reminiscent of a collaboration between Beauty & Youth of Japan and The Hillside of New York.

Along with the floral ties are plenty of floral tops.  Again, the connotations of floral shirts (think Jimmy Buffett) are not exactly flattering, but the colors and patterns used make shirts like the ones above work.  Take notes, old white men traveling in Hawaii.  And the kid’s t-shirt in the first pic?  Not too different from the type of stuff Japanese brand 45rpm is doing.

There’s also a little bit of the weird here and there (if the floral tie didn’t do it for you).  Check out the pants on the somber gent to the left, oddly similar to this offering by the good folks at Oak.

Also, check out the other somber guy on the left, Mr. Short But Threatening, rocking a chalk-stripe suit not unlike this from Dolce & Gabbana or a reverse version of this Vivienne Westwood blazer.

And lest we forget about the ladies (a definite no-no), some more floral pieces.  The above like any number of tops you’ll see floating around this summer, the dress like prettier, more vibrant versions of these by Jean Paul Gaultier and Tsumori Chisato.

And, in a nutshell, there’s the style of Sonatine.  Like any previous Film Friday editions, of course not everyone will agree with this film’s inclusion as a movie with sartorial worth.  In fact, many will probably share the same opinion as Kitano’s character above.  The fact remains, though, that the characters in this film pull off both traditional and more daring pieces with ease and that makes it worth any Film Friday.

Soon you’ll be able to get your Rag & Bone fix without leaving the isolating comfort of your laptop keyboard. Word on the blogosphere streets is that the label will soon launch an e-commerce sight. I’ll start saving now so  I can finally be able to rock this tweed cape.

I’m 5’2” and I’ve always considered myself a shopping whore. I could spend all day looking for new shoes and clothes. When I was a little girl, I couldn’t wait to grow up and have a boyfriend to dress up for. Well, now I’m all grown up but I’m boyfriendless. I go on a crazy amount of dates, so fortunately for me, I live in awesome dresses and even better shoes.

As part of my job, I go on dates with all different types of men. I’ve met some nice guys, arrogant ones, tall men, and of course, short ones. Being that I’m quite tiny myself, I don’t mind dating men who are only a little bit taller than me. Luckily, the way men come in all different shapes and sizes, so do shoes and dresses.

The Shoes

The first time I went on a date with a man who was 5’8”, I had no idea what to wear. I panicked for a few minutes and then calmed myself down. All of my shoes are at least 5 inches tall and I thought it might make my date feel bad if I was almost his height. So, I did a little research and found a few pairs of not so high heels.

My shoe obsession of the moment happens to be a pair of turquoise flat sandals from Elizabeth and James Blaze Flat Thongs.

They’re colorful and simple. Turquoise goes with everything, including short men, which is why these shoes rock. So, if you’re going on a date with a man who’s almost as tall as you, I suggest wearing these turquoise beauties.

If you’re like Victoria Beckham and you aren’t comfortable in totally flat shoes, opt for a heel, but a very low heel. This gives you the chance to still feel sexy, while making sure not to tower over your date. I know that women feel sexier when they have on a pair of extremely high heels. But if your date is a cutie, give him a chance to feel like a real man. Let him appear tall.

They’re also feminine and very unique. So when your date takes you to an over crowded bar, the girl sitting next to you won’t be wearing the same shoes.

Now that you have the shoes covered, you just have to figure out what to wear with them. I’m sure your date would love it if you arrived naked, but that’s not appropriate so I recommend wearing a dress.

THE DRESS

I’m a native New Yorker so I live in black. Head to toe I’m usually dressed in black, even down to my bra and underwear. Black is sexy, slimming, and elegant. One dress I die for is by Rag & Bone. It’s tight and short so it works perfectly with flats. $395 on Shopbop.com.

I’m a huge fan of mini dresses, but if you wear them with high heels, you can look a little slutty. That’s why whenever I go out with a short man, I put on a really little dress and embrace a comfy pair of flats.

However, not everyone likes blatantly sexy clothing. So, if tight and body hugging dresses aren’t your thing, I recommend wearing a flirty, fun dress on a date. They’re still sexy, but in a more understated way. Rebecca Taylor makes great dresses that are super romantic. This one looks good on everyone and it’s even a fun color. I bet you had no idea that a whole new wardrobe can come out of dating a short man.

Instead of being afraid of dating someone who might be the same height as you, go out and buy a flats-appropriate dress and matching pair of shoes. You might enjoy the date. And even if you don’t, at least you scored a few new items for the summer.

Last night, The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced the nominations for the 2010 CFDA Fashion Awards. The winners will be announced at the annual gala on June 7 at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.

The Womenswear Designer of the Yearnominees are: Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karen

The Menswear Designer of the Year nominees are: Michael Bastian, Tom Ford, and David Neville & Marcus Wainwright for Rag & Bone.

For Accessory Designer of the Year Award the nominees are: Alexis Bittar, Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs.

The Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung, and Jason Wu

The  Swarovski Award for Menswear: Richard Chai, Patrik Ervell, and Simon Spurr.

Fall 2010 marked a pivotal collection for Rag & Bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville. Whereas previous collections showcased a girl with androgynous tendencies, the Rag & Bone Fall 2010 collection was really the first strictly womenswear line we’ve seen from the designers. Gathering inspiration from 1920s Everest expeditions, Wainwright and Neville brought us a modernized vintage collection with overwhelming utility pieces. From tweed jackets to sweater dresses and plaid ponchos to Rag & Bone’s atypical oversized knit scarf, the collection screams Rag & Bone without being overly masculine for a change.

Rag and Bone literally took a picture of me and created this collection. I LOVE THIS SO VERY HARD. I’ve never gotten a wallet boner before from a collection, but I need to buy everything that suggests I own everything in this collection. Great, amazing stuff. So excited for what’s coming from menswear in the fall of 2010. Greens and browns and camo. Amazing. Just so perfect.

Rag & Bone is slated to launch three companion collections aimed to provide simple, basic staple items to wardrobes. Rag & Bone/JEAN, Rag & Bone/KNIT and Rag & Bone/SHIRT are just three of the many expected companion collections to provide shoppers with a variety of styles, lengths and colors in their closets. According to designer David Neville, these companion collections “[give] [Rag & Bone] room to be more experimental and exuberant on the runway.” Really looking forward to this!
