Ralph Lauren Needs To Re-Evaluate His Idea of “Fat”

Five-foot-eight, 120-pound model Filippa Hamilton-Palmstierna said goodbye to Ralph Lauren after four successful years for the label. But unlike models who get too old for the job, Hamilton-Palmstierna’s contract ran out because “of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with [Ralph Lauren].” According to Hamilton-Palmstierna, some obsessively photoshopped images (above) led her down the path to unemployment, her perfectly proportional body not up to the “skinny” modeling industry’s standards. Knock, knock- Hamilton-Palmstierna is NOT fat and photoshopped images are NOT real.

Not sure why she’s naked in the first image, but the second image is a clear ad for Ralph Lauren Underwear.
SHOP: The SartoriaLUST Pop-Up At Barneys On Madison Ave.

One of our favorite street photographers Scott Schuman, better known at the Sartorialist, has organized his own pop-up at Barneys! Full of lust-worthy items, Schuman displays his luxurious taste at the ‘SartoriaLUST,’ which includes pieces from Maison Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, APC, and Ralph Lauren, among others. Prices are high, but isn’t that the point of lust-worthy?

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Ralph Lauren S/S 2010

If you think you’re a Ralph Lauren fan, you haven’t met my mother. I promised to get her a front row seat one day, but had this been the show she attended, there would have been some major disappointment. In light of the recession, Lauren’s theme was centered around the early 20th century laborer. Think Dust Bowl- oversized, patchwork denim, vintage floral print dresses, newsboy hats. I understand that Lauren’s trademark is classics and basics, but honestly, we’ve seen this too many times before. It’s cute that the theme matches our nation’s current economic status, but do we have to be this literal?

Polo: The Sport of Socializing

I must admit that before this weekend, the extent of my knowledge about the sport of polo revolved around what I’d discerned from the Ralph Lauren logo—I knew there were horses and mallets involved, but that was it. After venturing this weekend to Bridgehampton for the Opening Day of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge, I still know nothing about the sport, but I have learned that it’s the quintessential Hamptons society activity during the summer.
Polo in Bridgehampton is hardly about who wins or loses—I don’t think that anyone even pays attention to the announcer—it’s about which spectator has the best time—and looks the best while doing it. Held every Saturday at the Blue Star Jets Field up until August 22nd, the fabulous and famous crowd together beneath the white tents for some polo watching and some people watching. The latter was what most interested me so I was out observing the fashions.
Instead of the wide hats and Oscar de la Renta dresses I half-expected to see, women dressed much more casually, preferring sundresses and the sort. Surprisingly, most of the peacocking came from the men, who sported a wonderful array of colors. White jeans were predictably popular, along with tailored sports coats and bright accents. It was really all about the color, and it was refreshing to see so many men dress so boldly.
Guests mingled and enjoyed the beautiful weather, fueled by libations from the open bar as well as an assortment of snacks and hors d’oeuvres. I personally couldn’t get enough of the mini cupcakes passed around in the VIP tent—I must have eaten an entire passed tray throughout the two-hour-long event. Celebrity wattage came from famous faces like Star Jones, Chase Crawford (who hosted last year’s opening), Beth Ostrosky and several realty TV stars.
Even though I was a polo neophyte, I still knew about star player Nacho Figueras from the Ralph Lauren fragrance ads and so the day’s highlight may just have been spotting him in the front of the Ralph Lauren Black Watch tent. And yes, he’s just as beautiful in person as he is in those pictures.

DESIGNER TO KNOW: Flaph

Awesome Spring collection from a designer that doesn’t usually fall along the beaten path. The striped blazers are amazing, and the boldly accented sweaters are nothing short of Ralph Lauren status to me. Go bold with your patterns this Spring, and let Flaph be the ones to do it for you.

Tao Okamoto Lands Ralph Lauren

Japanese model Tao Okamoto has recently landed the Ralph Lauren fall campaign, a teaser (above) appeared in WWD earlier this week.
Marc Jacobs Responsible for Store Wipe Out in The West Village

An angry shopped recently stated that the amounts of empty store fronts on Bleeker St is due to Marc Jacobs because he is able to pay the $60,000 a month rent. “It’s because of all the Marc Jacobs and Ralph Laurens. They are killing the Village,” he said. “Ten years ago — mom-and-pop stores gone, restaurants gone, they’re all gone.”
Saggin’ and Baggin’

Though I haven’t exactly lost sleep contemplating this recent trend, I have given the saggy boyfriend-jean quite a bit of thought. With summer in mind, I snagged a pair of outlet bargain, light wash Ralph Lauren straight-leg jeans. Without trying them on, I blindly bought them and soon came to realize that they weren’t quite as tight-fitting as I expected. Now, I was never an advocate for the boyfriend jean look (frankly, I think they are pretty unflattering and oftentimes butch) but by sagging them, paired with an oversized tank top, layered jewelry and a pair of sandal stilettos, I was really impressed with the outfit.
While my boyfriend-jean epiphany might not change your mind, here’s some advice if you’re feeling a bit daring. I find that these baggy jeans look more feminine in a straight-leg light-wash, exposing the shape of your legs while giving an overall softer look. If you’ve got a feminine pair of sandals or flats, by all means, give them a shot…otherwise stick to heels! Boots tend to butch up the look. Oh, and if you’re going to sag, do it like you mean it! Sagging needs to look intentional otherwise people will think you took the opposite route of this girl and bought pants that were too big!
Thanks for the photos Bleach Black and Ssense!
Who Is The Next Fashion Saviour?

People are always looking for the next Donna, the next Ralph, or the next Calvin. (sorry Tommy, we never consider you a fashion designer) but no one ever acknowledge that there may not be a next big fashion business bearing a designer’s name. Consider this: after the big 3, name another designer with his/her business over 1 billion dollars. The answer is: 0. It’s very typical of fashion to prefer the system to remain unchanged.
Let’s look at new york. Marc? His business is tiny comparing to Louis Vuitton. Micheal Kors? Those old Tommy business guys, Lawrence and Silas, brought Kors 6 years ago and proclaimed it will be a billion dollar business. They are stuck at the middle. Our personal favorite: Narciso Rodriguez? Liz Claiborne brought 50% for a mere 10 million, then return it back to the designer late last year. We assume for much less. Then we have those wunderkind kids one after another; remember Zack? What about Jeffery Chow? It’s ok, because now we have the Wangs and the Wus. But would they be like Calvin?
Yes, some designers would claim that they would like to remain small and ‘intimate’. Fine, but you should also know that we are some of the most egotistical creatures. We want fame, money, and sway, in that order. To drive any real influence, one will need to reach the mass (say hi to Issac Mizrahi). To do that, you need cold hard cash. A billion of it.
What companies blew up so big in the part 10 years? Juicy. Sven. Zara. H&M.
Can we see a pattern and the future here?

TRENDSPARK: Jumpsuits Are Everywhere

I for one, am glad to see the jumpsuit making yet another comeback.
They are easy to wear and most are very comfortable. I personally favor the ones that are loose, as they are very flattering to the figure. I love the “long and lean” look, as most accentuate the legs making them appear long whether you have long legs or not. The more “tailored” looks from Ralph Lauren and Yves St. Laurent are perfect to go from day to night with a change of shoes and accessories. In my book they are a definite “fashion do”. Here are just a few of my favorites.

Here are just a few of my favorites. From top to bottom the designers are as follows: PHILLIP LIM, PROENZA SCHOULER, YVES ST. LAURENT, RALPH LAUREN, DEREK LAM, BEBE and ANTHROPOLOGIE.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Monarchy Fall 2009

Monarchy’s Fall 2009 collection left me satiated with my munch for Equestrian inspired fashion for the season. High waisted riding trousers, plaid slacks and capes, dramatic wide collar blouses, military trenches, slim fitted suits and leather bombers were just some of the classic pieces, with an evident twist, included on the runway. Combine the classic, preppy English elements of Ralph Lauren and the crisp, tailored cuts of Rag & Bone and voila, you’ve got the essentials of Monarchy fall 2009. But despite my appreciation for the revival of the British duds, I was a bit disappointed to find that all accessories, from riding boots to leather gloves, were not Monarchy originals. Major credit goes to Muehlbauer , Victor Osborne, Dover Saddlery, Anna Herrington and several others for the accessories that made the Monarchy looks successful.

First Look: Polo Ralph Lauren SS09 Collection

I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of Ralph Lauren Polo, but fashion is fashion so I’m sharing their new collection with you anyways.
For all you well dressed fellas out there, here is the uniform for Spring at the country club in 2009.
Thanks Selectism.
