Cannes Red Carpet Trend: Seeing Scarlet

Cannes Film Festival came to a close during Memorial Day weekend, and we were quite impressed with most of the red carpet looks from our favorite celebrities and their stylists. Black and bling were certainly prevalent red carpet choices for the occasion, but we were pleasantly surprised at how many ladies were seeing red during the fest. Whether from nose to toes or just with a splash of detail, red on the red carpet was hot, hot, hot at Cannes 2012. See the gallery after the jump.

Sniff, sniff. I smell Oscar dresses. It’s no surprise Reem Acra showed some of the most beautifully beaded gowns I’ve seen all week for Fall 2012, but the rest of the collection was just as interesting. Ladylike suits woven with metallic threads were accessorized with chic matching luggage. Leather pieces in black, burgundy and forest green demonstrated Acra’s affinity for impeccably tailored, sophisticated and body-conscious design. Thigh high slits, cutouts and sheer panels drove the evening wear to another level of red carpet worthiness. It’s guaranteed whoever wears Fall 2012 Acra during awards season will land on the best dressed list. If the dress fits properly of course.

Color palette: Black and metallics – so chic
Mood: Girl power glamour
Statement Pieces: All of the gowns were divine, but the Café mocha art deco long-sleeved beaded gown was a standout.
Front Row Name Drops: I didn’t notice much buzz among the front row.
Gossip: The girls next to me were gossiping about some boy, but it was dreadfully uninteresting.

They’re sweeping up at the award shows and stealing everyone’s hearts, and the cast of The Artist is shining under a spotlight that grows brighter each day. But behind the Oscar nod for Best Picture (among many other nominations it has received) is that killer fashion from the 1920s — flapper, avant garde, art deco glam. And The Artist isn’t alone – think about how Midnight in Paris, Boardwalk Empire and soon enough The Great Gatsby are full of 1920s fashion glam. Here are a few ways to channel it.

3 Holiday Dressing Tips from Designer Reem Acra

Drawing on some inspiration behind her own designs, Reem Acra lets us in on some of her secret holiday style tips. Her advice:

1. When picking the perfect holiday outfit, opt for a special top over a simple bottom. A silky shirt with an embellished accent will draw attention to your face and give you that little extra glow.

2. Sequins are a tried-and-true party option. When in doubt, find a piece with just the right amount of sparkle to achieve your own “go to” look of understated elegance.

3. When going straight from the office to your company holiday party, plan ahead. Wear a work appropriate dress during the day and dress it up for evening with something eye-catching like my patterned sequin jacket.

1. Mariah Carey in Herve Leger by Max Azria

What a mess! How many people did it require to get her to fit into this dress?

2. Jennifer Aniston in Valentino couture

Jennifer needs to do something different to her hair, and wear something other than black with a slit!

3. Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

Way too many shades of red, with the hair, lips and dress…the ruffles add weight to her body and the boobs are so distracting and in your face!

4. Anna Paquin in Stella McCartney

Maybe it’s because I just don’t like her, but this full sequin dress is very overwhelming on her little frame.

5. Kate Winslet in Yves Saint Laurent

An overall boring look, I expected more from her!

6. Mo’Nique in Reem Acra

Not loving the gold, or the way it fit her, seemed really tight on top!

7. Julia Roberts in Yves Saint Laurent

I’m not a fan of short dresses on the red carpet, along with how boring the cut of this dress was, mixed with the overwhelming jewels, the entire look was just badly styled.

8. Courtney Cox in Victoria Beckham

A bit too safe as well, I always expect celebs to go all out when they are nominated for an award…

9. Heidi Klum in Roberto Cavalli

I always look forward to seeing Heidi, this time I’m disappointed, really don’t like the hair, color, or fit of this dress, looks like a last min choice…

10. Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior

Not sure why I don’t like this look, but the peek a boo slip is really bothering me.
