British Council of Fashion Designers Play a Love Game at Wimbledon

The 125th annual Wimbledon tournament began yesterday with much hoorah from the fashion world. Just the other night, the women of the Women’s Tennis Association gathered for a pre-competition gala at The Roof Gardens in Kensington and the British Council of Fashion Designers rallied around of the tennis stars. These ladies may look smokin’ in tiny pleated skirts and poly/elastane tanks, but they clean up nice when powered by a council of designers. At least most of them do… See which one aced it, and which ones baselined.

ACE: Caroline Wozniacki – Stella McCartney

The #1 high power fashion-cum-athletic designer Stella McCartney has fittingly taken the #1 player in the WTA as her own; Caroline Wozniacki is the face of Adidas by Stella McCartney. She’s flashing Stella off and on the court and crushing bitches on the grass court.

SIDESPIN: Serena Williams - Burberry

One half of the dominating twins, this side paneled sidespin hugs every solid muscle curve.

LOVE: Ana Ivanovic – Matthew Williamson

Playfully textured, the slight fringe reminds us of the grass courts on which the tournament takes place. Mini-skirts and fast balls…

WILDCARD: Jelena Jankovic – Vivienne Westwood

This dress is a shirred thing. Will a win be in the bag?

FAULT: Heather Watson – Mulberry

How one makes an superbly trim athlete look frumpy is beyond me, but unfortunately Mulberry has done that for Watson. And the shoes look like ace bandages, not a good look for a competing tennis pro.

FLATLINER: Laura Robson – Temperley

She hits it low and steady. None too exciting, except for the shoulders.

LET: Andrea Petkovic – Richard Nicoll

The tennis imagery works in the iridescence, but the fit? The ref is consulting the umpire for a final decision.

BYE: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – David Koma

Its tennis themed pleat cuts her off all wrong, and ends up making her look wide. Too much, yet too little.

LOVE LOVE: Maria Sharpova – Alexander McQueen

Stuns, absolutely radiant.

MATCH POINT: Bethanie Mattek-Sands - Alex Noble

Designer to Lady Gaga, Alex Noble created the bodice of this dress out of, you guessed it, tennis balls. Tis possible that only an entity like Mother Monster could pull off such a thing, but don’t get us wrong Bethanie, we admire your balls.

Good little ball boy he is, Nicholas Kirkwood heeled the whole WTA for this night.

Christopher Kane Wins the 2011 BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund Award

The young, bright designer Christopher Kane was announced the 2011 winner of the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund Award by British Vogue‘s editor Alexandra Shulman and the British Fashion Council. Kane is receiving a little more than $300,000 to further his already successful business. He defeated very stiff competition including designers Richard Nicoll, Charlotte Olympia, Nicholas Kirkwood, Jonathan Saunders, Peter Pilotto, E. Tautz and Osman Yousefzada.

“I am delighted that Christopher has won the second BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award,” British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said. “The shortlist was very strong and we were impressed by the level of talent which was inspiring. Christopher and Tammy have worked immensely hard and it is wonderful to see a designer with his vision and commitment rewarded.”

J Brand Collaborating with top British designers

HUGE NEWS! Their Houlihans have taken over the world and now J Brand are positioning themselves to properly dominate the British demin marketplace. WWD annouced the following this morning:

J Brand will unveil collaborations with five British designers, each of whose limited edition jeans will be sold at one top U.K. store. These include Christopher Kane to be sold at Harvey Nichols, Erdem Moralioglu at Harrods, Meadham Kirchhoff at Browns, Peter Pilotto at Selfridges and Richard Nicoll at Liberty. Additionally, all five collaborations will be available on Net-a-porter.com. Priced between 250 pounds and 600 pounds, or $380 to $912 at current exchange, only 300 to 500 pairs of each style will be produced and will first hit stores for the U.K.’s Fashion’s Night Out event on Sept. 8

When Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana purchase pieces from your Central Saint Martins graduation show to inspire their own collections, it’s got to be a pretty flattering compliment. For Bora Aksu, this experience was the beginning of a charmed fashion trajectory. A four-times recipient of the NEWGEN sponsorship award, he founded his own label straight out of art school and never looked back. Bora’s clothing mimics his career’s fairytale aura, cut with rock’n’roll edge and old-time royal glamour. Described by Vogue as gifted with a ‘romantic, 18th Century vision’, he has collaborated with the film, dance and music-scene elite. Bora and Dazed managed to fit all of this into our chat, plus a few words on his covetable designs for ethical label People Tree…

Dazed Digital: Who or what was the inspiration for your A/W 2010/11 collection?
Bora Aksu: Based on an imaginary relationship between Marie Antoinette and Edward Scissorhands, it’s about searching for the beauty in the unexpected. The idea was to create demi-couture dresses with a twist using different techniques. The colour palette adds dramatic noir details to a base of subtle pastels; bold coppers and blacks cut and contrast cupcake blues and pinks.

DD: How did your exclusive capsule collection for fair trade, organic label People Tree happen?
Bora Aksu: The collaboration started through a Japanese Vogue project. Three chosen designers (Richard Nicoll, Thakoon and me) designed one piece for People Tree; a limited line was produced. After its success People Tree asked me if I’d like to design a small capsule collection. As the whole purpose is something beyond fashion I didn’t think twice and we’ve been collaborating since then. I’ve learned a lot… It’s a totally different production process, compared to my own line. You need to be much more flexible as a designer. Its not so much about what I want, it’s more like what can we do together.

DD: You’ve worked with contemporary dance company, The Cathy Marston Project, and epic film prop designers Artisan Armour. How was it?
Bora Aksu: I love collaborating with creative people from different fields as it totally brings a new vision to what I do. The Cathy Marston Project was about designing costumes for their dance company. It was challenging as the costumes had to meet their needs (flexibility, strength, movement). The first trials were a total disaster – all the costumes were ripped apart in the rehearsals. And then I got it right and we were all happy.

DD: How did it feel when Tori Amos bought your whole Living Waters collection for her Bee Keeper world tour?
Bora Aksu: She is such an inspiration and I love working with her. She is so down to earth and working with her is always so much fun. At that time, I think she came to the show and decided that my whole collection fitted perfectly for Bee Keeper. Then we had meetings together: her excitement excites everyone around her. She is a very special artist.

DD: Which other fabulous women have you dressed? Who would you love to wear your garments?
Bora Aksu: Keira Knightley, Kirsten Dunst, Liz Jagger, Helena Christensen, Twiggy.

DD: Do you have more multimedia collaborations planned for the future?
Bora Aksu: I do have a film project. It’s very exciting but it’s still in discussion so lets see…

DD: Where can we buy your work?
Bora Aksu: Selfridges in London, Via Bus Stop in Japan, Zenta in Paris, Sbaiz in Milan, D-Mop in Hong Kong…

DD: What has been your best career or fashion moment so far?
Bora Aksu: I enjoy every minute of my career as I’m doing what I love… I’m still very excited about my meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in March. She is very warm and has such an aura around her.

DD: What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Bora Aksu: It was from my Course Director from Central Saint Martins, Louise Wilson: ‘there is nothing impossible and if you really want it you can make it.’

I usually don’t care for those collections that take one particular silhouette and create variations, however in this case, I find them interesting. While the actual dress “structure” doesn’t change much, it’s the cotton candy colors and details that actually make them appealing. Each piece manages to hold it’s own without looking as though it’s an exact clone of the last. The Black and Metallic pieces are perfect opposites.

A few years ago I acquired a vintage Ralph Lauren burgundy blazer and after seeing the trends from the Fall 2010 runways, boy am I glad I’ve got that piece! As one of the biggest fall trends, velvet is making a big comeback. Having appeared on the runways of designers like Alexander Wang, Richard Nicoll and Dolce & Gabbana, velvet slacks, blazers, skirts, dresses and vests are some must-have pieces for the fall. Just when you thought velvet was a thing of the past, it’s back and trendier than ever!

Richard Nicoll’s Fall 2010 may be better suited for an older, more professional clientele, but old doesn’t mean uninteresting. Checker pattern pants and skirts, velvet draped dresses, sheer tops and cropped, wrap blazer dresses were some of the collection highlights. A very clean-cut collection for a down-to-business woman.

Six Scents: Series Two Preview

October will be the release date for the next batch of fragrances from Six Scents, and you’re hearing this from one person who couldn’t be more excited to see what they have to offer. For those of you not familiar with the brand, they produce six different scents at a time, that are all collaborations with big name designers.

Series two is going to feature a bunch of big names consisting of Phillip Lim (N’1), Damir Doma (N’2), Henrik Vibskov (N’3), Henry Holland (N’4), Richard Nicoll (N’5), and Toga (N’6). The scents are all top notch, and if they are anything like their previous release we are all in for a treat.

Richard Nicoll Spring 2009...hmm, the style and color look familiar.

Call the fashion police! There is not an outfit crisis at hand, but a rather sneaky designer stealing inspiration from minimalist German designer, Jill Sander! It seems as if Richard Nicoll, who presented his Spring collection at London Fashion Week, was fresh out of ideas and thought he’d “borrow” the same suit style and bright pink color for his collection. But Nicoll didn’t stop there! He even had the audacity to siphon Sander’s bold and bright solid color scheme into his whole collection! Take a look at the evidence and see for yourself (Sander Vs. Nicoll). Shame, shame Nicoll…the fashion industry raised you better than that.

Heading down the runway is Nicoll’s Spring 09 collection; rich in design aesthetic and bold in color use. Transparency is one of Richard’s high points as many of the pieces are worked with transparent materials for true edge. The collection is an extensive combination of various pieces created for the independent woman. Dark blues and blacks make a wide appearance throughout Richard’s collection to make a statement as the design detail works the extra flair. “Richard is like nothing else in fashion right now,” says Elizabeth Charles, who’s boutiques now carry Richard’s captivating line. The collection is truly phenomenal.

Rodarte Named as Swiss Textiles Award Finalists

Finalists for the 9th annual Swiss Textiles Award have been announced, and this year, a CFDA stalwart is a contender. Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy are among the six finalists for the prize, a reward made all the sweeter by its well-performing currency. This marks only the second time an American designer has been named a finalist. British designers Richard Nicoll, Louise Goldin, Jean-Pierre Braganza are also finalists, as are Toga of Japan and Cathy Pill of Belgium.
