Were designers looking to create beauty trends alongside their lines, or did they want beauty to take a backseat and let fashion take the stage? These four hairstyles straight from the Paris runways are divided in aesthetic –  which do you prefer?

Stomp out of Montreal’s newest boutique, SSENSE, in Rick Owens Turbo Geo Basket Sneakers for $1,475.

Freedman turned to a wide variety of artists, architects and interior designers, including Rafael de Cárdenas, Joe Grillo, Peter Shelton and Lee F. Mindel of Shelton, Mindel & Associates and Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, giving them carte blanche to create their own environments: “I said, ‘Here’s your space. That’s your room. Within that room I really want you to let your imagination fly,’” he explained.

Housed in those environments are looks by  Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Rick Owens, Holms + Yang, Azzedine Alaïa, Chloé and Céline.

Since his first installation – when Daphne Guinness turned the Barneys windows into her personal dressing room before the Met Gala — Freedman has tried “to bring in different kinds of talent to do projects and make something new and fresh.” Whereas Doonan’s windows were often whimsical and heavy on the kitsch, Freedman said he hopes to “have a dialogue between fashion and [other disciplines such as] art, design, music and architecture.”

So I guess that means no ball gowns made of recycled coffee cans? [WWD]

What do you think of these politically-charged high fashion makeovers? Personally, I think Hillary looks the best out of all of them —  giving goddess realness while sacrificing none of the power she’s been harnessing in those pantsuits over the last decade or so.

Layer 5: The Throw. On top is a thin sarong aka giant scarf aka sheet. It should be about 5 feet in one direction, enough so you can wrap yourself in it. A soft traditional cotton feels great, but get experimental. A stretch jersey or linen or silk or wool (but not this time of year) each has its own benefits.

Layer 4: The Netted Sweater. Find a cropped sweater with a gaping crochet or knit. The holier the better for seeing through to the layers underneath. It will ad some insulation from the chill, but you won’t overheat. Cheap trick: find a sweater like this at Goodwill and crop it yourself.

Layer 3: The Thin Open Cardigan. An open layer that’s thin won’t weigh you down or heat you up. This one is by Rick Owens and sure to be luxuriously fabricated with the most breathable knit there is, but you can find a sweater akin to this anywhere.

Layer 2: The Sheer Button Up: This is the first line of defense on your arms. Barely there, it allows airflow and vision straight through to the dress beneath. Button to the top for an austere, yet surprisingly sexy effect.

Layer 1: The Maxi Dress. The smooth length of the floor length dress is an excellent canvas to paint layers upon. I like the stripes because it permits the eye to accept the choppy layers you’ll be applying atop it. This one is around $60 in the UK, but there are many great maxi dresses out in the American Market.

Now go forth and layer. Forgo the coat!

What’s going on in Beijing, you ask? The grand opening of a store stocked with more than a range of Comme des Garçons lines. The brand new I.T Beijing Market features pieces from Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, Hussein Chalayan, Dior Homme, Ann Demeulemeester and other avant-garde visionaries.

What you really want to know – what are so many new designers doing that disappoints this fashion oracle? They are too soft on themselves, they design things that already exist! It is a sin against fashion. She firmly believes that the point of fashion is to design what has never been done. And that is why we revere her.

To that end, she is finding it harder to create new collections. She’ll never make the same thing twice and humbly admits that the “breadth of possibility is getting smaller.” The thought of selling her company has occurred to her and she hasn’t written it off as an impossibility, but she wonders who would want it? The company is so essentially her. Her current staff that she is training will hopefully be up to the Comme des Garçons challenge: to create something resolutely new. Though more hopefully, that won’t be necessary any time soon.

ARTINFO sat down with Rick Owens, the Paris-based fashion designer behind some of the coolest grungy gothwear on the planet to talk about his latest endeavor, furniture design. We’ve got our favorite bits from the interview after the jump.

ARTINFO: What prompted you to start designing furniture?

RICK OWENS: When I moved into my house in Paris, I would have ideally stuffed it with Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Jean Dunand, and Eileen Grey. But, besides its prohibitive cost, all that Art Deco stuff is just too small for me. Instead, I decided to make fake, oversize versions with the same improvisational, Scotch–taped approach I applied to my first clothing collection.

AI: Fashion and furniture both have to be, on some level, functional and practical. Is there an overlap in how you approach those different areas of design?

RO: Just as I executed my interpretation of designer Madame Grès‘ styles in washed leather and old T-shirts, I sketched Jean Michel-Frank in black plywood. Once I saw how it came out, I thought it would be amusing to present it in my menswear showroom. It was intended as a one-time thing, but it developed a life of its own.

AI: How do you choose your materials? They seem to be an important aspect in your designs. Can you talk about using Spanish alabaster, for example?

RO: I probably think of lines first, before going to my fairly limited roster of materials: plywood, concrete, marble, leather, fur, and antlers. I’m using alabaster for the first time. I’m not trying to do anything particularly witty or startling. I’m just trying to make something I can live with that summarizes some of the experiences and touchstones that mean something to me and to our generation. It’s the same approach I bring to making clothes — I’m looking for rational, modest grace.

AI: Do you have a favorite furniture piece, both to admire and to design?

RO: I’d really like a couple of those huge Jean Dunand urns like the ones in the Porte Dorée Museum in Paris. I’m also keeping my eyes open for a perfect Egyptian sarcophagus similar to one of the pieces that appeared in the 2009 Yves Saint Laurent auction.

AI: Can you talk about the sources you reference for this collection? It seems to range from Le Corbusier to Donald Judd. Was there an underlying theme that you drew from all of them?

RO: I’m most attracted to a rational graceful line from point A to point B — an almost brutal, elegant simplicity.

AI: What’s the story behind the show’s title, “Pavane for a Dead Princess”?

RO: My parents always had Debussy, Wagner, and Ravel playing in the house, and I remember hearing the Ravel solo piano piece with that name as a child. The beauty of the music and the mystery of its title haunted me. I still like it, and I like the idea of having liked it for 40 years. It makes me think of time and timelessness, the way an alabaster slab makes me think of time and timelessness.

The second my pants become too short on my legs, they wind up on the racks of a Salvation Army or Goodwill. But if the Fall 2010 menswear collections in Paris and Milan taught me anything, it’s that flood water pants are going to be huge this fall. Designers and labels like Dior Homme, Junya Watanabe and Rick Owens showed a variety of short, flood-water pants and slacks in their Fall 2010 collections.

But you’ve got to be careful with this one otherwise you’ll end up looking like you’re too poor for new pants! Rock the floody pants with a pair of nice patterned or solid socks and oxfords or boots. Lots of layers and accessories will make the floody pants look trendy and intentional instead of dorky and accidental.

The latest Trendspark is straight from the runways of Rick Owens, Julius-Garden, Boris Bidjan Saberi and other  avant-garde mens designers.

The look is basically the equivalent of walking out of your house with a blanket on. It will totally make you look like a Dementor ready to plauge the world of Hogwarts. Why anyone one would want to look like one of the Taliban’s bitches is beyond me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone attempted this come September fashion week. Watch for it, this Trendspark is closer than you think.

Odyn Vovk has been taking the fashion world by storm lately, and for good reason. They have taken a formula created by the great Rick Owens, and more or less perfected it. The images I have seen of the upcoming Fall collection have the construction and style of Owens, with the creativity of Gareth Pugh. The combination is insane. Plus the images remind me of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

The Fall 2009 collection by Annhagen seems to be a conglomerate of certain looks from other designers that we have all seen before. This collection has a hint of all the big names like Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, Dior Homme and just the slightest touch of J. Lindeberg. The collection is put together well, but I must say the originality isn’t all there.

Julius is bringing the men’s fashion world another collection very much in the likes of a Rick Owens or Odyn Vovk, and this perticular men’s writer couldn’t be more excited. The super tight black pants and leggings lined up with a well fitting long coat is a look everyone should be able to appreciate. How fucking hot are the knee high boots!

I am loving the latest collection from Sistere. The brand is right in line with some of the hottest designers out there right now like Gareth Pugh and Rick Owens, and the collection is jam packed with everyday looks. The leather jacket featured above is definitely my favorite piece.
