The ensemble includes:

OVERSIZED BLAZER: This one by Acne, is long enough to cover a tight skirt. You can ditch the skirt at the office on the way out. FYI, A cardinal rule for work appropriateness – cover your bum. That said…

ROUCHE SKIRT: This one by A.L.C., you want to find one that rouches, allowing the most versatility in length. Pull it long at the office, hike it up (just a tad ladies, you’re no ho’) to party.

CROP TOP: This one by Topshop with its overall straps, it crops at the waist and fits snug with the height of the skirt. It has a make-your-own-dress effect, and you can let a strip of high midriff breath sexy.

CROPPIER CARDIGAN: This one by Preen, find a cardigan that buttons above the bust. This gives a gorgeous peekaboo to your decolletage, and makes it easier to stash in a purse. This will be your jacket for the evening.

Rifle through your own closet, you might be able to layer this way with what you have. If not, happy shopping! Remember – smaller separates have a longer life.

Layer 5: The Throw. On top is a thin sarong aka giant scarf aka sheet. It should be about 5 feet in one direction, enough so you can wrap yourself in it. A soft traditional cotton feels great, but get experimental. A stretch jersey or linen or silk or wool (but not this time of year) each has its own benefits.

Layer 4: The Netted Sweater. Find a cropped sweater with a gaping crochet or knit. The holier the better for seeing through to the layers underneath. It will ad some insulation from the chill, but you won’t overheat. Cheap trick: find a sweater like this at Goodwill and crop it yourself.

Layer 3: The Thin Open Cardigan. An open layer that’s thin won’t weigh you down or heat you up. This one is by Rick Owens and sure to be luxuriously fabricated with the most breathable knit there is, but you can find a sweater akin to this anywhere.

Layer 2: The Sheer Button Up: This is the first line of defense on your arms. Barely there, it allows airflow and vision straight through to the dress beneath. Button to the top for an austere, yet surprisingly sexy effect.

Layer 1: The Maxi Dress. The smooth length of the floor length dress is an excellent canvas to paint layers upon. I like the stripes because it permits the eye to accept the choppy layers you’ll be applying atop it. This one is around $60 in the UK, but there are many great maxi dresses out in the American Market.

Now go forth and layer. Forgo the coat!

I’m quite fond of the thick, chunky scarf trend that infiltrated its way into our wardrobes as of late, but turns heads and drops jaws like an avant garde accessory. Behold, perhaps the most amazing scarf I’ve every seen, brought to you by none other than a crafty Etsy account holder. This gorgeous cobweb shawl/scarf, designed by Las Lopez, an Argentinian fiber designer, can be worn a versatile number of ways. I decided to do an experiment (if you can call it that) on how many ways you can wear an Hermes scarf (or any other large square scarf) and this is probably one of my favorite ways of wearing it. I would tie it as a halter over wearing it around my neck anyday!

I can’t really call this a WTF because there is nothing horrible about this outfit, but there’s also nothing thrilling.  I do like her pants, but I’m really over the Ray Ban glasses and houndstooth scarf, and think the shoes are a little weird…the color is alright, but is that a flower or…what?

They are structurally intriguing and while they might not be the warmest thing, they will definitely add some umph to your basic white tee.
