I had a tanning mishap before a high school dance. I had gone tanning in a bed and had some awkward white areas under my arms from the way I was lying. I tried to patch it up with self tanner and ended up with orange stripes in those areas – I looked like Tony The Tiger. Never again!

I got a chance to check out tan expert Sophie Evans at Sephora this afternoon demonstrating her skills in the St. Tropez Tanning Masterclass. What makes the perfect self-tan with no mistakes? Check out her answers below and comment for your chance to win these amazing products.

What makes for an even, non-streaky self-tan?
Self tans go streaky and patchy because people are scared to use them and try to spread a very little amount of product over a large surface area of skin. When it stretches, it streaks. Make sure the skin is covered with product and you can see it properly.

St. Tropez is built so it doesn’t streak. What makes it different from other self tanners out there?
It has a high level of tanning agent so the skin won’t need to absorb all of it. If there is not enough, that it when the tan looks patchy. As long as your skin is completely covered with the product, you can’t go wrong.

What’s the best way to make your self tan last as long as possible
Be gentle on your skin – pat it dry and don’t use harsh products. Sweat will make it fade faster as well.

Lindsay Lohan actually made the eHarmony spoof in order to sell us her 6126 leggings and her Sevin Nyne spray-on self-tanner. If you watch the video carefully, and you’ll notice that Lohan sprays the self-tanner into the air approximately 58 seconds in. She also says her eHarmony ID is 612679 — a combination of the names for her leggings line and spray-tan line.Brilliant!
