Self tans go streaky and patchy because people are scared to use them and try to spread a very little amount of product over a large surface area of skin. When it stretches, it streaks. Make sure the skin is covered with product and you can see it properly.

What does your prom night beauty routine include?

1. Soak feet to soothe and prepare: Soaking feet will soften and prepare them for the pedicure ahead. Adding bath salts to warm water will soothe feet and relax tired muscles. 1. Start with straightening shampoo and conditioner. Wash and condition your hair with products that will smooth and straighten out waves. 1. Wear sunscreen to protect skin and hair. This is the most important type of sun protection you can get without staying indoors. If you are going to be poolside, at the beach or even spending a day at the park, it’s good to apply these products 30 minutes before exposure to the sun. All you need for this beauty routine is a tube of solid lip balm, an angled eye shadow brush and fine loose glitter of your choice.

Step 1: Take your lip balm and apply it to your eyebrow, covering the skin slightly above and below. I like Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm because it goes on smoothly and has a cooling effect. And please, make sure you buy a separate tube you’re not going to use on your lips.

Step 2: Dip your angled eye shadow brush into your pot of glitter, shaking off the excess. Apply pressure in a sweeping motion across the length of your brow. Press the brush down to make sure the glitter will adhere to the balm without budging. A good quality, super cheap brush will do just fine, like the Sonia Kashuk Angled Eyeshadow Brush. As for glitter, Make Up For Ever Glitters are amazing, and I’m obsessed with NYX Glitter Powder, which is what I used here.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the eyebrow is coated with an amount of glitter than suits you. For the finished product below, I executed steps 1 and 2 three times for each eyebrow.

Now you’re ready for anything! What do you think, will you try this look over the weekend?

1. Get a good pair of hair shears. Don’t you dare lift your kitchen, fabric or paper cutting scissors for this task because they will damage your hair further. 2. Examine your strands for split ends. You don’t necessarily need a magnifying glass, but remember that damaged hair comes in all shapes and sizes. Get to know your hair and learn to distinguish the healthy strands from the broken. The chart below is a great tool for helping you pinpoint split ends.

3. Separate hair into sections. Looking at your entire head of hair at once can be very overwhelming. Divide so you can conquer and make sure each section is scrupulously taken care of.

4. Prepare your hair for trimming. Work on a small piece of hair at a time to avoid going crazy with the scissors. Hold a piece of hair, no more than an inch long and an inch wide, in between your middle and index finger. Examine the section, looking for the damaged pieces you need to snip.

5. Time to start trimming! Grab your new shears and lightly clip away at those split ends, making sure to snip about 1/4 inch above the damage, cutting perpendicular to the hair strand. Repeat the last two steps with each section of hair.

The best way to prevent split ends is to get your hair professionally cut every six to eight weeks. But there are other ways to stop oncoming damage. What are your secrets for maintaining healthy hair?

1. Moisturize. Dry skin flakes which means makeup will look scaly when applied to dry skin. 5. Cut glass with your cheekbones. Although foundation and powder even out the complexion and conceal blemishes, they tend to flatten the natural contours of the face. 1. Start with an eye primer to create a perfect canvas. Eye shadow and liner can crease or stray after a few hours of wear. Apply a good primer all over your lid, from lash line to eyebrow, and underneath the eye before using concealer. My oily skin causes shadow to crease without fail, but Benefit Stay Don’t Stray keeps it looking fresh all day. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is another great product and comes in an adorable genie bottle.

2. Line your eyes with a dark shade. Whether black, charcoal, eggplant or any other smoky hue, eyeliner creates the drama for this sultry look. Line your top lashes from the inner to outer corners, dot in between your bottom lashes and line the inner rim. Smudge with an eyeliner brush for more drama. I swear by Benefit BADgal Waterproof Liner because it stays put and is equipped with a blending tip. The M.A.C. 3. Apply a medium powder shadow from top lashes to crease. Blend the shadow from the lid to the crease, using upward and outward motions. 1. WASH YOUR FACE. I know it sounds easy, but we’ve all been to that dark place at 4:30 a.m. after a night of drinking when you just want to pass out in your warm comfy bed. Here is something I have learned the hard way – routine is everything, and you will never have nice skin if you don’t take your makeup off at the end of the day. A gentle, no-frills soap that rinses clean is your best bet. My favorite, as simple as it seems, is the Neutrogena Facial Cleansing Bar, fragrance free. I know it sounds ridiculous, but this bar actually makes me want to wash my face because it feels so clean after.

2. Exfoliate, but not too much. There are tons of medical exfoliation treatments out there like chemical peels and microdermabrasion that could damage skin in the long run and make it more difficult to regenerate cells. But it is good to remove dead skin, so an exfoliation treatment twice a week will leave skin feeling soft without overworking it. I swear by the Skin by Monica Olsen Refine Deep Penetrating Clay Cleanse and GRAM Skincare Daily Scrub.

3. Use an alcohol-free toner to balance and hydrate skin. Alcohol dehydrates our skin and bodies, so why should we rub it all over our faces? Gently massage it into your skin twice a day with a cotton pad to hydrate your skin. You can also spritz it on your face throughout the day as a cool, calming refresher.

1. Moisturized lips are happy lips. If you want color to cooperate, you must make sure you’re lips are hydrated. What happens when you rub foundation into dry skin? It flakes and makes a mess. The same will happen with your lipstick – it will crack on dry lips and look a mess. Try a matte lip balm like Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm before you apply the hue.

2. Use a neutral lip pencil to define lips. Don’t worry about matching your lip liner to lipstick. It’s an unnecessary expense and can look weird when your lipstick fades first. Stick to a neutral pencil like Smashbox The Nude Lipliner. It will give you an outline to work with and ensure your lipstick will stay in place and not stray outside the lines.

1. Buy shoes that fit. If you disregard this step, you will fail to stay comfortable in heels even if you follow every other rule. If the shoes are too big, you toes will curl under as you walk, attempting to hold on to the sole for dear life. If they are too small, pinching and swelling will happen immediately.  Shoes were physically constructed to hit certain parts of the foot, and when you ignore that fact it can be the beginning of a long line of foot injuries.  No matter how much you love those too-small vintage Ferragamos, do as Goldilocks and search until you find a pair just right.

2. Break in your heels before taking them out into the world. When you buy a new pair of shoes, wear them around your house before hitting the pavement. Try a few short sessions of running around indoors to break them in without hurting yourself.  You will walk with more confidence, the shoe will begin to form to your foot, and the bottoms will scuff slightly to prevent slipping.

3. Don’t be afraid of insoles. Feet sliding in a strappy shoe? Find a non-slip insole that will keep your foot in place. Do you have a low arch or sensitive soles? Gel inserts can be arch supporters and therefore life savers if you’re going to be on your feet all day.

4. Learn to walk properly in heels. 1. Posture is key: back straight, chest forward, head up and shoulders back. 2. Tightening your stomach muscles will keep your core strong and prevent all of your weight from falling on your tootsies. 3. Take long strides and keep those knees from bending so you aren’t clopping down like Bigfoot. Try to place your heel and toe down at the same time, or your toe down first and then your heel (the opposite of walking in flats).  Walking heel to toe could snap a stiletto or an ankle. 4. Your knees are best friends, keep them close to each other. 5. To walk like a runway model, keep your upper body tight and strong but let your hips sway. You will walk with swagger and prevent that awful sharp pain in the balls of your feet that comes from stomping.

6. There is no shame in taking a seat if you can. DO NOT remove your heels until you’re done wearing them for the day. Your feet will swell slightly after taking them off, so it will be harder to get them back on once you’ve allowed them to relax. If you are in an environment where seating is available and sitting is appropriate, take a seat every 20-30 minutes. This will let an inanimate object support your weight for awhile.

The Marc Jacobs ones were gifted to me by stylist Robert Verdi as was the Kenneth Cole cologne, Reaction (the scent is fresh and young).  Finally the latest copy of VMAN for the train and cab rides all over the city. This year along side the many different twists I have on my beauty list of 2011 it’s all about the glitter and the gold… I came across this bizarre inspiration this week while reviewing the Alice + Olivia Spring 2011 collection (a daily routine) following the inspiration of the trademark metallic gold nail “make-up” the models wore during Fashion Week.
