Christie Brinkley was Billy Joel‘s “Uptown Girl.” Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington helped George Michael declare his “Freedom.” And Helena Christensen played Chris Isaak‘s “Wicked Game,” as directed by the legendary Herb Ritts. Models have been appearing in music videos nearly as long as the form has been alive, lest we forget Calvin Klein brief-fillers Djimon Hounsou and Antonio Sabato, Jr. in Janet Jackson‘s “Love Will Never Do (Without You),” also directed by Ritts. So in honor of our May month of music, Male Model Humpday takes a look at the hunky men making beautiful music…videos.

Anthony Gallo flexes his guns and brandishes one in Magdalene's "Nothing Personal," directed by Joe Lally. Also, check for a cameo by Sebastian Sauvé as the Angel of Death.

Holden Newell in Carly Rae Jepsen's piece of pop perfection and early contender for song of the summer, "Call Me Maybe."

Brazilian Evandro Soldati joins a bevy of shirtless, muscular and high-heeled dancers in Lady Gaga's "Alejandro," directed by Steven Klein.

Picking up where Gaga's stilettoed hoofers took off, Madonna ups the male model ante with not one but five hunks. Rob Evans, Simon Nessman, Jon Kortajarena, Sean O'Pry and Brad Alphonso lend their life forces to keep Madge feeling young in "Girl Gone Wild."

The Material Girl's backup dancers in "Girl Gone Wild" are none other than Ukrainian dance-pop outfit Kazazy, who're known for their immaculate collection of heels, moves and splits. Their video for "Love" shows them at their finest and hottest.

Katy Perry really knocked it outta the goddamn park with this one. The song and the model. "Teenage Dream" pretty much solidified her as a pop phenom while giving us loads of model Josh Kloss' rippling six pack for our viewing pleasure.

And then there's Katy Perry's former boytoy Baptiste Giabiconi, who decided to take the reigns and deliver his own music video, the brilliantly awful "Showtime."

French pop tart Anggun's "Echo (You & I)" was France's official selection for Eurovision 2012. So she wasn't about to half-step with the video which not only features model Yonathan Wangman among other delectable dudes, but costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Madonna Goes Wild with Top Male Models in Latest Video

Say what you will about Madonna — god knows I do — but lady can make a video. For “Girl Gone Wild,” Madge recruited FashionIndie faves Sean O’Pry, Simon Nessman, Jon Kortajarena and Rob Evans, stripped them down, had them fondle each other and — do my eyes deceive me or are those the well-heeled (and well-toned) boys of Ukrainian pop/dance troupe Kazaky bringing up Madonna’s ancient rear? With a nod to “Vogue,” “Express Yourself” and even a little “Like a Prayer,” “Girl Gone Wild” puts on one hell of a gay show and proves that Madonna imitates Madonna much better than Lady Gaga ever could. - Vogue Italia‘s “Haute Mess” editorial has been accused of being “insensitive and condescending towards low-income stereotypes.” Meanwhile, those low-income stereotypes have been setting trends for ages so the only insensitive thing is the lack of royalties. As a wise woman once said, “Show me the receipts.” [Refinery29]

- Take a walk in Kate Middleton‘s shoes when the Duchess of Cambridge‘s go-to supplier of sensible wedges, L.K. Bennett, opens its first store in New York. [Racked]

- How…reductive. Madonna recycled some unused “Vogue” footage, threw in top models Sean O’Pry and Jon Kortajarena making out over an apple, added Simon Nessman and Rob Evans to round out her cougar gang bang party and called it her “Girl Gone Wild” video.

- It’ll be a Black Swan sequel of sorts when Oscar-winning prima ballerina Natalie Portman reunites with her co-star/choreographer/baby daddy Benjamin Millepied and Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy – for the New York Ballet’s Spring 2012 Gala. [Elle]

- Marc Jacobs continues to generally not give a fuck. In a recently-released profile in Time, Jacobs addresses his controversial use of underage models, saying, “You have child actors and children who model for catalogs…What’s the difference between doing a commercial for peanut butter and being on a runway?” Well, less cocaine, for one. Either way you slice it, Americana Manhasset struck retro gold with its spring 2012 lookbook starring super-male Simon Nessman and runway runaway Karlie Kloss. Along with their lovable dog Sassy, The Twins and big sister Sally, Kloss and Ness make the most appallingly adorable 60s family since Mary Tyler Moore and Dick van Dyke. And proving that she always knows what the hell she’s doing, Karlie is the perfect housewife — in Chanel, Oscar de la Renta and Louis Vuitton, no less. Versace has been gaining momentum these past few months after first announcing a collaboration with H&M, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping. For the February 2012 issue of Vogue Nippon, models Lindsay Ellingson, Simon Nessman and Vika Falileeva are decked-out in the brand from head-to-toe with colorful hair to match by Oribe. Though not reaching the racy heights of our favorite vintage Versace ads, photographer Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele did a fine job with Keeping the Faith and giving us the attitude we can always expect from stepping into a full-on look from Donatella. Jeffrey Fashion Cares is a good cause: over the past 8 years they’ve raised $4 million dollars for LGBT and LGBT youth charities such as Lambda Legal, The Hetrick-Martin Institute and Gay Men’s Health Crisis. And each year they hold a fashion show that addresses my favorite cause: shirtless male models. This year’s event, held at the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, brought out such gorgeous eye candy as Simon Nessman, Evandro Soldati, Arthur Sales, David Agbodji, Francisco Lachowski, River Viiperi, Cole Mohr and Parker Hurley and helped to sell a record-breaking number of tickets. Ah, the audacity of hope.

Between the Spreads: Settling the Rihanna-Ciara Twitter War

The Twitterverse was all…a-twitter this weekend over the 5-minute war launched between two titanesses of R&B, Ciara and Rihanna. The fur went flying after Ciara paid a visit with Joan Rivers on E!’s Fashion Police and mentioned a recent unpleasant encounter she had with RiRi. Then Rihanna set out to prove how unpleasant she can really be, in 140 characters or less.

Things have calmed down dramatically since then, but whenever divas duel it out in the public arena, there is an inevitable choosing of sides and bitter argument over who’s better, blah, blah blah.

Well, since I live for these moments, I’ve decided the only logical way to determine who is the baddest bitch on the block (clearly not including Beyoncé who could blink and take out both of them) is to compare both RiRi’s and CiCi’s editorials from European Vogues…naturally.

Rihanna covered Vogue Italia‘s special couture supplement in 2009, shot by the incredible Steven Klein and styled by Patti Wilson:

Then last year, Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci styled Ciara for a Vogue Paris shoot with the dynamic duo of Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

For me, the answer is clear. Ciara’s editorial easily trumps Rihanna’s, achieving a poetic and sensual beauty that’s more effective than the hard, technical sexuality of the Klein shoot. Which is not to say that both spreads aren’t great, but Ciara possesses a grace and classic beauty that makes her actually look like a model and not just a moonlighting popstar in it for some free couture.

Plus, she totally gets extra points because Riccardo said this about her:

“Ciara is like a black Betty Page. A very refined hip hop queen. Although she is American, she has a sort of European class, a Parisian chic.”

Musing for Givenchy beats out openly stealing from David LaChappelle any day of the week.

Male Model Humpday: Jon K All Day

Jon Kortajarena possesses the type of beauty that comes along but once in a queer moon. Brooding, quirky, quixotic but distinctively male. With that heavy brow, those angular cheekbones, that pompadour puff of hair, those pouty lips and lithe frame iit’s no wonder Tom Ford cast him as the intriguing drifter that entrances Colin Firth in A Single Man; or that he later cast him as the impeccable face of his eponymous menswear and eyewear lines. And it’s no wonder that he has been my favorite male model for the past two years (with an occasional dalliance with Simon Nessman). Beauty, thy first name is Jon and thy last name is, well… unpronounceable. Hint: (Kor-ta-ha-ray-na)

Before the plethora of photos, here’s a blog interview Jon K did with W in June of 2009 that birthed my obsessive, fanatical, undying love for him.

What was your worst modeling experience?
My first fashion week in Milan, at age 18. I was like, “What am I doing here?” I was feeling so alone. It was freezing cold and I didn’t bring the right clothes. And I couldn’t communicate because my English was even worse than it is now. Instead of saying, “She is blond,” I would say, “She is yellow hair!”

[Awww!]

What’s the last book you read?
I just finished Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. It was very special. I’m in a difficult moment in my personal life now. Heart things. I don’t mean medical heart problems—I mean relationships. Love things! So the book taught me about accepting life how it comes. Sometimes you are fighting for things you can’t fight for.

[Awwwwwww!]

Didn’t you just work as an actor for the first time?
Yes. I can’t give details about the movie yet, but it was an unbelievable experience. I felt more secure in front of the camera than in real life. In my normal life I have so many insecurities. I am learning from them, or trying to learn.

[All right, just kill me. And the movie obvi turned out to be A Single Man.]

How much time do you spend at the gym?
Almost none. I really hate the gym. So I go running. When I lift weights I feel like I am hurting myself. I would rather do other things. Swimming sometimes. Why should I be two hours in a gym, suffering so much, with all these people that I don’t know and don’t want to know?

Have you ever fallen down on the runway?
Yes! It happened during, like, my second show! But I was lucky because it was on a stairway that was mostly hidden, so the audience couldn’t see anything.

Who hits on you most often—women or men?
I don’t get hit on a lot. Really. I do see people looking at me but normally it’s me who takes the first step. (laughs) I’m the one who walks over to see what’s going on.

[You know, people stare at me too. But usually I think it's for all the wrong reasons.]
