Who doesn’t want to look model thin, if only this were a perfect world we could all look amazing 24/7. But sadly we are not… even though a bit sarcastic here are the ten conclusions of my anti-food weekend. “Live by the scale and the measuring tape. Unlike people, they will not lie to you.”

2) Learn to LOVE that empty feeling in your stomach. Trust me, you’ll feel disgusting when it starts filling up again.

3) If you must eat, ONLY eat when people are watching you. All other calories are eaten in vain.

4) Get your vitamins! Calcium and iron are super important; take a multi-vitamin everyday.

5) Pay close attention to other girl’s bodies. Pick them apart – try to find faults even with the best bodies. Then apply these high standards to yourself.

6) Live by the scale and the measuring tape. Unlike people, they will not lie to you.

7) Sleep at least 6 hours a night. Less than 6 hours sleep a night stimulates appetite by 15%.

8 ) Buy tiny little clothes – the nicer, the better. Get that sexy cocktail dress or the expensive designer jeans you’ve wanted but buy them one or two sizes too small. You’ll be inspired to slim down so you can fit into them. Try them on regularly to monitor your progress.

9) Keep in mind: if your skinny friend eats a lot, that DOES NOT mean you can, too.

10) Never eat anything bigger than your fist. If you have to stretch your lips, it’s TOO BIG.

(Thank you Skinny Gossip girls)

Alexandra Shulamn’s statements that established models and new “celebrity” models (such as Peaches Geldof – not really sure how we feel about the editor of Vogue calling her a model, but ok) aren’t fitting into sample sizes is frightening. We’re in fashion, we get it: model’s are skinny, very skinny. But do they need to get skinnier? I think not. Honestly, I don’t think they can get much skinnier without fainting as they walk down the catwalk….

The editor of Vogue has accused designers of forcing magazines to hire skinnier models to fit the clothes they make.

Alexandra Shulman has taken on the world’s top fashion houses claiming the clothes they make have become ‘substantially smaller’.
She says many of the garments sent out to magazines before photo-shoots are so small they do not even fit the star models.

In a strongly-worded letter not intended for publication, she said she had been forced to hire girls ‘with jutting bones and no breasts or hips’ simply so they could get into the garments.

She said Vogue magazine was now regularly retouching photographs to make models look bigger and healthier.

‘We have now reached a point where many of the sample sizes don’t comfortably fit even the established star models,’ read the letter, which was sent to the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Prada and Versace.

‘Instead we are having to use girls with jutting hip bones and no breasts or hips, to fit them.

‘Nowadays I will often ask the photographers to retouch to make the models appear larger.

‘I am finding that the feedback from my readers and the general feeling in the UK is that people really don’t want to see such thin girls in either editorial or advertising.’

Last night leading industry figures hailed her intervention as a new war on the size-zero fashion industry.

Supermodel Erin O’Connor hailed Ms Shulman’s stand as ‘a huge breakthrough’.

Garments are typically cut to fit the models who will wear them on the catwalk six months before the items appear in store, however limited budgets often force fashion houses to cast ‘new faces’ in their shows. Such models are usually young and underdeveloped, so lacking in more womanly curves.

Immediately after the catwalk shows the same samples will be sent to magazines to shoot. But as the sizes are so small, editors have no choice but to hire models who fit the clothes otherwise they will not be able to publish the latest collections from designers.

Ms Shulman, who has edited the magazine for nearly 20 years, told The Times how she found herself asking photographers not to make the girls look so thin.

‘Quite often I hear the fashion editor say when talking about one model or another “I don’t think she will fit the clothes”. Some of the girls she was talking about were already very thin.’

She added that newer celebrity models such as Daisy Lowe and the Geldof sisters were not the kind of thin that would fit into designer samples.

Vogue fashion booking editor Sophie Baudrand added that she had been required to find girls who were 5ft 10in tall, with 23-in waistlines.

There are more than 1.1 million people suffering from anorexia or bulimia, according to Beat, the eating disorder charity.

Emma Healey, director of operations of Beat, said today: ‘This is very welcome. The whole controversy over size zero models has been a wake up call.

‘British fashion is leading the way on this, and it is very encouraging to see Vogue, which is THE fashion magazine, taking a stance like this.’

Baroness Kingsmill, who lead the 2007 model health inquiry on behalf of the British Fashion Council, said the stand taken by Shulman was an ‘encouraging sign’ from one of the fashion industry’s ‘leading lights’.

Stephen Kolb, of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, said: ‘If a stylist is casting models that are unhealthy they shouldn’t work with them.’

We never thought we’d see the day when actual complaints would be filed against images in a catalogue. I’ve heard of countless people who complain about increasingly skinny models to their friends, but will simply close a magazine and leave it on their coffee table without a word to the people who allow it to happen. Well, those days are over. And boy are we thrilled! When people started to flip through the pages of the Simons department store catalogue, disgust was not even a word good enough to describe the reaction. Rail-thin models, clearly unhealthy, filled each and every page of their advertising campaign. After the print of 450,000 copies there was a whopping 200 complaints and demands that the catalogue be halted in production. I know 200 of 450,000 doesn’t sound like much. But come on, sometimes there is hardly even one. The family company president, Peter Simons, claims he never laid eyes on the catalogue until they were sent out to the various consumers. He too, feels that the images were “unsuitable” for the company image or any image for that matter. It’s clear everyone is pushing to get involved. Nice Work!

The movement refuses to die down! Don’t get us wrong, that’s not a bad thing! The CFDA has been taking the world by and storm and recently there has been news of booths that are being set up in Bryant Park, which will be dedicated to health information. The booths will be equipped with brochures concerning eating disorders. Facilities, such as the Renfrew Center, will be helping out with the booths, which will be set up throughout the lobby and backstage. Steven Kolb of the CFDA says:

“[W]e will have a clinician on site who is going to be there to answer specific questions, provide referrals and basically perform overall outreach to any person who might be interested in treatment or may be worried about someone they are working with.”

It seems as though people are really making an effort to stay away from a size 0. Finally, a movement that won’t let up!

Indies..Meet Tatiana Stewart. She recently moved to New York City to become a ballet dancer, but soon found her niche in the harsh realities of the modeling industry. We’ve recently been talking about the backtracking taken from a recent step in the right direction when it comes to super-skinny models. This is, yet again, another step in the wrong direction.

18 year old Tatiana is an accomplished young woman who came to New York looking for success in her talents. When she was scouted to model clothing in Abercrombie & Fitch she discovered yet another skill she could take into consideration. Well, at least she thought she could. This is no issue with the agencies; Ford, Click and Elite Modeling came to Tatiana’s beck and call, but picky designers, photographers and reality show casting directors can’t seem to be put in their place.

America’s Next Top Model showed a definite interest in Tatiana, but when screen tests rolled around and models were asked to lift up their shirts to bare their abdomens Tatiana was dismissed. Though the CW is claiming they don’t have weight guidelines, lets face it, to them, she wasn’t skinny enough to be a skinny model. The basics of her casting call advice have been to take her size four, six-two body and shrink it to a “loose size two”. That’s ten to fifteen pounds on an already super-skinny frame! What are they thinking!
