Beautiful, stylish and always at the ready with a fresh cocktail or a witty remark (often both) Nora  is married to retired detective/functioning alcoholic Nick Charles (the brilliant William Powell).

In town for the holidays, Nick and Nora are ensnared in a murder mystery after the mistress of one of Nick’s old client’s turns up dead. Nick is then beseeched by said client’s willful daughter to help clear her father’s name.

Based on Dashiell Hammett‘s novel of the same name, what follows is a twisty-turny whodunit sharper than anything Hollywood has turned out in decades. In fact, Powell and Loy’s chemistry proved so dynamic they were reunited for five more sequels (they eventually starred in 14 films together), but this was far and away their best outing.

Costume designer Dolly Tree keeps Nora looking every inch the socialite, but for a film almost 80 years old, her wardrobe is surprisingly modern. Nora is prone to fur and dramatic sleeves, but she also sports a silk jumpsuit, a bowtie and an evening gown that passes for revealing even by today’s lax standards.

It’s hard to pick Nora’s best look — she’s in the film for maybe 35 minutes in total but like any lady worth her salt she has no less than 8 wardrobe changes — however the dress she dons for the Charles’ Christmas party ranks high on the list. Asymmetrical…tiers…a study in stripes….it’s like she’s a gorgeous candy cane:

Then there’s this subtle nightgown:

I mean, if you’re going to go to bed, why not throw on a silk negligee with floor-sweeping sleeves and fur trim? It beats a Snuggie any day of the week.

Though originally intended as a B picture and shot in only two weeks, The Thin Man went on to earn four Oscar nominations and remains one of the best — and certainly one of the most stylish — comedies of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Hot Toddy

Booze you’ll need: 2 oz Whiskey, Rum or Brandy

What to add: Boiling water, stir in a tsp of honey or sugar (to help your medicine go down) and garnish with some cloves and a slice of lemon

What to wear: A hot toddy conjures up images of a dowager sipping  from a cartoonishly large mug, her cats sprawled about her, so this drink calls for shawl neck cardigan and perhaps a cane to shake at any young whipper-snappers who pass by your way.

Brandy Almond Mocha

Booze you’ll need: 1 oz Amaretto, 1 oz Brandy

What to add: Equal parts hot chocolate and coffee, top off with some whipped cream, garnish with chocolate shavings and slivered almonds

What to wear: Wrap yourself in yards of knit sweater, leaving only your mouth to sip the sweet confectionery treat.

Hot Raspberry Dream

Booze you’ll need: 1 oz Black Raspberry Liqueur, 1 oz Dark Creme de Cacao

What to add: Steamed milk and garnish with chocolate shavings

What to wear: You make me/ Feel like I’m living a/ Hot Raspberry Dream. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. For a trip to dreamland, throw on some silk pajamas and a dramatic kimono.

Ski Lift Cocktail

Booze you’ll need: 1 oz Peach Schnapps, 1 oz Coconut Rum

What to add: Hot chocolate, top with whipped cream and sprinkle on some shredded coconut

What to wear: The only skiing I’ve ever done has been in the bathrooms of dive bars at ungodly hours of the night, but a belted ski suit seems apropos for this particular lift.

Midnight Snowstorm Cocktail

Booze you’ll need: 2 oz White Creme de Menthe

What to add: Hot chocolate, top off with whipped cream and drizzle with Green Creme de Menthe

What to wear: In hopes of staving off yet another midnight snowstorm, I suggest hunkering down in a leopard/zebra print Snuggie and knocking these cocktails back til you can’t remember what snow looks like.

Tom and Jerry

Booze you’ll need: 1 oz Brandy or Cognac, 1 oz Dark Rum

What to add: Crack an egg, beat the whites and the yolk separately; add them to a mug; add 1/2 oz simple syrup (or powdered sugar); add booze; top off with hot milk or water and garnish with a bit of nutmeg

What to wear: In celebration of that little mouse, why not a bow tie? I’d suggest something from Tom Cat, but that heathen feline just runs around naked and it’s too damn cold for that shit.

Aspen Hummer

Booze you’ll need: 1 oz 151 Rum, 1 oz Coffee Liqueur

What to add: Coffee, top off with whipped cream

What to wear: What does one wear for a hummer? Traditional logic would say something crotchless…perhaps throw a fur over it and hit the slopes. Speaking of which, does anyone know anywhere I can get some slopes for this weekend?
