Rachel is lucky she looks so elegant in her face and demeanor because she snagged a B by the skin of her teeth. This look would be so much better if the hair was bigger and her stylist would have remembered the steamer. But I do love how she chose this pink color so close to Easter Sunday.

Defining Fashion Moment: Whenever Mr. Sheffield had any sort of high-brow fête, Fran would make her entrance atop the staircase to the studio audience’s whoops and hollars. Then she would precede to mess up and inevitably repair whatever situation her employer was involved in.

Fran Drescher’s endlessly optimistic nanny was the continuation of a long legacy of whacky ladies who were no strangers to glamour. A legacy that started in the 1930s with screwball heroines like Carole Lombard, Katharine Hepburn and Irene Dunne and which continued for decades more with Lucille Ball.

That The Nanny is still in re-runs is a testament to Fran’s (Drescher and Fine’s) own legacy. Now if we only had more time I could delve into the genius wardrobes of Ms. Fine’s relations: Yetta and Sylvia Fine.

I can see the apple doesn’t fall far from the sequined tree. And for extra credit, study up on Should Be on the Nanny.

Get the future glow with St. Tropez Skin Illuminator. When applied to the cheek bones, décolletage, arms and shins your body gives off a mysterious delicate glow. It comes in a travel size tube, for on-the-go blueing, and it has a similar scent as sunscreen. I gave this product a bit of a test run, and I applied a droplet to the back of my hand so I could examine it closely. The effect is like a mild black-light-esque buzz. It’s subtle enough to not look alien, but bright enough to garner a double take. My left hand is currently considerably more curious than my right, the highlights shimmer back against the light.

When to use it? It  looks best atop our melanin extremes: either the brightest of fair or the warmest of tanned. Against the very pale, the blue leans more McQueen. Against the very tan, it reflects its namesake party island in the French Riviera, parfait after a day of sunning sans top.

The sample batch was used all over London Fashion Week Spring 2010, and now it’s available for purchase. You’re on the right track, baby.

Admittedly, when first I saw these shoes I was skeptical. Animal prints, especially leopard, tread a fine line between chic and kitsch; and before this modern age, they’d seem fairly out of place in warm-weather wear. Note though, the way they introduce a splash of edgy patterning to this ensemble, featured in Alexander Wang’s S/S 2010 collection:

Usually, couture means you have to present at least 35 pieces, making this collection fall short by more than 20 looks, but nonetheless, it’s exactly the Margiela we’re used to and a bit of what we’d expect Gaga to wear to the beach.

At  Rodarte, models sported exaggerated tribal tattoos, while at  Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris,  models were sent down the runways with painted on jewelry, like edgy crosses and chains.

If those ubiquitous  quarter-machine tats remind you too much of childhood or just seem a little too commonplace, snag a limited-edition pack of Chanel’s temporary designs. Les Trompe L’Oeil de Chanel Temporary Skin Art, which includes 55 designs, were crafted by Chanel creative director Peter Philips for the spring runway show. They will be sold at Chanel.com starting mid-February for $75.

This is the first image from the Spring 2010 M.A.C. Viva Glam cosmetics campaign, featuring Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper. The newest pop idol and the girl that just wants to have fun are the newest faces of the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, which has donated over $135 million to the fight against HIV/AIDS since 1994. Way to go M.A.C. This is going to be huge.

“We want to create clothes that are timeless and classic,” Wang said prior to his runway show, as quoted on Style.com. “Our girl wants investment pieces.”

It’s true, the recession has us looking for statement pieces that can  be paired with what’s already in our closet. Wang put his own twist on varsity team basics like knee socks and even…tighty whiteys as outerwear.

We’ll have to wait until Spring to see how that  trend pans out.

Unlike the other Target/ designer collaborations of times past, Gaultier’s collection with be much more limited in supply, only being sold in 250 stores across the country instead of the 600 that featured Sui’s line. Mark your calendars now!

Printed and patterned pants, or leggings, are making their own distinct statement and are a wardrobe must have for Spring 2010.

Designer Albino D’Amato brought a bit of 1920′s African safari to the 21st century with his Spring 2010 collection. With subtle khaki colors playing a major role, D’Amato mixed in some vintage teacup patterns, and combined with his modern structure, added some fantastic, chunky jewelry. Loving the bunched up, sheer tights paired with the heels and those bug-eye sunglasses!

Remember when Avril Levigne was a hardcore punk rocker with a band of bad ass hipsters? Well she’s dead. Meet the Malibu Barbie edition of Canada’s most vapid export and her new collection for Kohl’s Abbey Dawn…

I KNOW, I KNOW–where’s Rachel Roy to kick off New York Spring 2010 RTW Fashion Week?! Well, darlings, she’s moved up in the world and is showing later in the week and so it appears as though we’ll have to start things off with someone new. Shake it up a bit, which is what the fashion industry is trying desperately to do right now, with tepid results at best. Let’s talk Lang, shall we? Helmut Lang. The revered German minimalist now has two Americans at the helm, and gone are the days of $800 baggy white t-shirts, which pleases fashion maximumists such as myself to no end. Married designerly duo Nicole and Michael Colovos have maintained the original, highly intellectual and vaguely Sprockets-esque aesthetic of yore, but have given a bit of an invigoration to the line with a smidgen more colors, some very Euro-feeling prints, and a dash of denim that appears to be just what the doctor ordered.

While the original Helmut-approved skinny black pant was few and far between in this collection, there were some really great looks involving sharply angled jackets with looser, more deconstructed pants that were right up any self-respecting Euro design snob’s impeccable Bauhaus alley. I’m worried that the harem pant is getting played out, but if Helmut deems them appropriate for next year, then I might just have to break down and get me some. I just love them there paired with the structured, pleated shift top.

The dichotomy of textures and fabric drape is just so interesting. And then while that grey hooded number is verging on something the heroine of a Vagisil ad would drape herself in when she’s not “feeling like herself,” otherwise known as having some stank cooter, it pulls itself out of sad-sack smelly-vag sweatshirt territory with some great construction, intriguing drape, and waist cinching to let everyone know that your vag does not in fact stink at all.

Last Fall, Swaim and Christina Hutson said a sad goodbye to Obedient Sons & Daughters and retested the fashion waters with new label Hutson. According to Meenal Mistry’s Twitter, Hutson, despite their projections to show at Fall 2009′s Fashion Week, will not be showing during the infamous week. Instead, a “small series” of Spring 2010 pieces will be available at the end of September. Devastation.

MAINSTREAMERS

Alexander McQueen:

Each of McQueen’s Fall ’09 pieces were sculpted to perfection to create forms in unique patterns and versatile shapes.

Marc Jacobs:

Marc Jacobs was all about the bright colors with this collection. Grabbing inspiration from 80s fashion, the neon hues and big shoulders were a hit on the runway.

Prada:

With fur shapes, wool suits, and some knee high boots, Prada styles hit the runway in edgy fashion

Balenciaga:

With draped satin and silk, paired with fitted tops and flowy dresses, the Balenciaga collection was all about luxury and versatility.

Louis Vuitton:

Bubble skirts, coats, and a ton of accessories marched down the runway for Louis Vuitton Fall’09, of course, bright colors added that perfect touch on all pieces.

Donna Karan:

Fitted coats and long skirts accessorized with belts and necklaces produced a strong collection for Donna Karan this fall.

Alexander Wang:

Focusing mostly on blacks and whites, Alexander Wang explored much more with textures for fall ’09. With each style paired with a matching accessory models looked the part from head to toe.

Moschino:

Ruffles and roses were at the forefront of Moschino’s line up for this Fall ’09 collection. Navy and black dresses with a hint of red adds that special something to each piece.

Roberto Cavalli:

Lace leggings, fur jackets, and knitted fabrics were all part of Roberto Cavalli’s image for Fall ’09.

Lanvin:

Leave it to Lanvin to let loose black gloves and intriguing silhouettes down the runway. With dresses and coats in beige, black, and white, the designer remembers the excitement of color with the occasional spark of red.

Proenza Schouler:

Though many designers stuck to inspiration of the past for Fall ’09, Proenza Schouler kept it modern for the runway. High necks and fitted coats were all a part of the designers vision for the season.

Alexandre Herchcovitch:

Alexandre Herchcovitch was all about the idea of chaos for his fall ’09 collection. Taking inspiration from big cities, multi-textured coats and printed dresses marched down the runway.

THE INDIE TEAM

A. F. Vandevorst:

For Fall ’09 A.F. Vandevorst dreamt-up silk dresses and fur vests colored in quite a specific scheme. With trenches in variations of beige, green, and black it’s clear that this collection was one of a kind.

ADAM:

Releasing an array of colorful styles, ADAM put forth bright, upbeat separates for Fall ’09.

Erdem:

It was all about embroidery and intense color for Erdem’s Fall ’09 collection; lace and satin worked together to create ensembles fit for the runway.

Haider Ackermann:

With flowy dresses under more fitted and architectural coats, Haider Ackermann found that perfect line to combine edge and sophistication.

Ann Demeulemeester:

Stiff black works combined with soft white dresses allowed Ann Demeulemeester to explore the importance of balance for Fall ’09.

Rodarte:

Working with pale schemes, leathers, and silk-screened styles, Rodarte lead a flood of breathe-taking dresses and skirts down the catwalk.

Phi:

Zippers and sequins were among Phi’s best looks for the Fall ’09 season. Edgy styles made it clear that the collection was really for the strong and independent woman.

Albino:

Focusing on geometric shapes and silk dresses, bronze, black, and even a few bright-colored numbers made a strong statement when they took the runway.

The end of June and beginning of July are of importance to me for one reason: men’s fashion week. Yeah,the tailored suits and spring apparel are nice, but what  I really look forward to is the hours I spend cooing over drop dead gorgeous models. The chiseled jaw. The supple lips. The piercing eyes. I’m like a kid in a candy-store!

But these past two weeks have been less than enjoyable for my model addiction. Is it just me, or are designers and bookers seriously skimping on the man candy this season? What once was a Cole, Ash, Luke and Taylor dominated field is now pillaged with some of world’s less fortunate looking creatures. Is there some sort of repulsive man trend I’m missing the boat on here?
