Mark Cramer and Coy Barton; “I’m in Steve Madden, he’s in Chinese Laundry,” said Mr. Barton of their shoes.

“I wish society was more acceptable of men wearing heels,” laments Jeff Paice, one of the queens interviewed by the Times, while in a black button down, black trousers and a pair of wedged sandals. Once upon a time, however, men could wear heels without stigma.

In 18th century France, Louis XIV often wore five-inch heels depicting miniature battle scenes. The Sun King decreed that only nobility were allowed to wear heels in red — how’s that for trademark infringement Christian Louboutin — and that no one could have heels higher than his own. Diva. Then in 1791, following the French Revolution, noted lilliputian Napoleon Bonaparte banned high heels to show equality.

Louis XIV in a sensible heel

For Paice, though, the options for a pump-lovin’ man leaves much to be desired. His cohorts, Coy Barton and Mark Cramer, allegedly 24 and 25, couldn’t agree more. ”I literally look at girls and think, you have so many options. You have jumpers, you have skirts, you have dresses, you have pants, you have shorts. Boys have pants and shorts. Or suits and a shirt,” Barton says, both he and Cramer dressed similarly in grey slacks, white dress shirt and tranny heel. But Barton, in his $115 Steve Maddens and Cramer in his $170 Chinese Laundry booties, don’t consider this a form of drag.

To them and to Sean Wagner, the heels are not about creating an illusion, they’re about having fun. “As far as we’re concerned, this is just bringing a look to a club — which is what you are supposed to do,” explains a bearded and bespectacled Wagner, in an eight-inch neon green pair of lace-up ankle boots — or as he refers to them, “my usual hiking shoes.” The 6’2″ Wagner is also a fan of the height the shoes give him. “I’ve bought Louis Vuitton. I’ve bought Gucci. But a lot of designers don’t go high enough for me. I found a company in Arizona that will do 15-inch heels for $3,000.” Let’s see 6’2″ plus 15″ equals…a towering tranny inferno.

Also taking the designer high-heeled road is Gregory Alexander, whose six-inch Balenciaga wooden wedges retail for $2000. That, however, is not the only price he’s paid for his shoe fetish. Last summer, while trying to jump a fence to get into a party, Alexander broke his ankle and was in a cast for four months. ”They told me I should never wear heels again, obviously,” he recounts.

But a broken ankle never keeps a lady down and by the time the NYT caught up with him, Alexander was in his Yves Saint Laurent Imperiale platform stiletto ankle boot — these L.A. gals do love an ankle boot —  skinny black jeans, a shirt and skinny tie and, of course, a motorcycle jacket, Because you gotta keep it butch. Olive has consumed me. Which is strange because it’s typically me consuming olives, like three, in a slightly naughty martini. But the pitted extra virgin maker is the hue I’m so drawn to right now.

It’s that brown with just a droplet of green – and not a drop more or you’re going too jungle. Why so perfect? Its chameleon ability to match with black, gray and brown, and nearly every other color you desire. Like that cool Fendi blue in the previous post.

Madden originally approached Deschanel and agreed to pay her $2 million to overlook a line of shoes and accessories. The verbal agreement said she would get paid even if the line wasn’t produced but would cover 13 days of work including press appearances and a photo shoot.

But in October, Madden went to Deschanel‘s agent and said the deal was off. Remember, verbal agreements in California are binding, so she deserves the money right? Madden has already had a tough year in the press, so maybe he’ll just pay up to keep things quiet.

Like I keep saying, clean it up before the new year.

Johnson seems happy about the situation. “Whenever you come out of a situation with a good partner, cash coming into the business and the elimination of all debt, what’s not to love?,” Johnson said.

Madden wants to focus on daytime dresses and make shoes 30 percent of the Betsey Johnson business. I can’t complain about that!

Madden already holds a license for handbags, small leather goods, belts and umbrellas under the Betsey Johnson and Betseyville trademarks. The collateral for the loan includes the company’s intellectual property, so Madden could be in line for the labels it holds as licensee. Also included among the items securing the loan are “the borrower’s personal property, accounts, deposit accounts and cash, equipment, fixtures, general intangibles, goods [and] inventory.”

Looks like I’m not the only person the recession put in the doghouse.

Two things I realize about this post: 1) caged heels have been big all summer and 2) I am stretching it slightly to lump #7 into the category of caged heels. Two things you should know in response 1) all of the above shoes are reasonably priced (score!) and 2) I'm in love with #7! 


In all seriousness, right now is the perfect time to pick up a pair (or two) of these if you haven't already. First of all, 5 out of 8 of the above shoes really are on sale and 3 out of 8 are under $100! Second, almost any of the above would make a great transition shoe into the fall because of the boot-like silhouette.

So my quest for finding a pair of brown wedges finally ended yesterday. I had fallen in love with the brown wedges from the Cynthia Vincent for Target line, but unfortunately they were completely gone by the second day. I made a couple of calls to Target stores (okay…make that MANY calls for a couple of weeks) trying to see if they would get a new shipment, but no luck. I finally gave up, but still was on the hunt for finding a pair of brown wedges.

UES (Upper Echelon Shoes) have recently announced their partnership with Steve Madden and are now gearing up for the unveiling of their first joint collection for Fall 2010! Check out the collection after the jump…

From the press release: With its new collection, UES has moved beyond their signature sneakers, unveiling new styles like high heeled wedges and motorcycle-inspired combat boots, which have all the comfort of their predecessors, but boast the style that’s become synonymous with the UES name. Campbell has also incorporated materials like pony hair and rabbit fur to supplement the standard stud and chain “shoewelry” of past collections.

Olga Grib & Jury Artola

After several designing gigs at big-name companies, Jury Artola is striking out on his own with an eponymous men’s collection for fall.

“Now is the perfect time [to launch] because guys want something new,” said Artola, who has worked for Steve Madden, Frye and Guess. “We’ve gone back to what shoemaking is all about: handcrafted, classic looks. The customer appreciates quality and artisan [products].”

His J.Artola line is composed of 17 styles, each available in two to three colors, and includes dress styles, casual looks and sportier shoes. Retail prices start at $250 for sneakers and $295 for dress and dress/casual styles, with Goodyear-welted boots costing $375 and boots with Vibram bottoms set at $395.

The brand — which is a self-funded collaboration with fellow Fashion Institute of Technology graduate Olga Grib on the business side — is made at a factory in Mexico using some eco-sensitive materials, such as cotton thread and natural dyes. Leather scraps are also composted and sold to local farmers.

Artola and Grib are targeting high-end retailers such as Bloomingdale’s and independents and boutiques in urban areas. The customer, they say, will likely be fashion-forward men in their 20s to 40s.

“With every recession, things become safe and people are afraid to step out of their [comfort zones],” said Grib. “There comes a point when there needs to be a breakthrough, and this [product] stands out when it sits on the shelf.”

The Team
Jury Artola designed the line, and Olga Grib takes care of marketing and sales. Artola most recently worked for Guess footwear, and Grib is at Tommy Hilfiger.

The Inspiration
Manhattan in the 17th century, when the city was called New Amsterdam, provided the basic idea behind the first season’s collection.

The First Account
Nos shoe boutique in Brooklyn, N.Y., picked up the line and is dedicating a shelf to the brand. “[The line] has a classic, contemporary flair, while being rugged at the same time,” said owner Racquel Nosworthy. “It fits right in between looking distressed and looking clean.”

This collection encompasses just about all the shoe styles that one would need for spring and summer (although I’m sure we can always find more). From weddings to date night, and clubbing, to vacation and the all too wonderful road trip with the girls. I love to have a good driving moccasin as well as another comfortable and cute flat (Beverly Feldman’s is a cute one) for the ‘ole road trip and vacation shopping. I have a couple of friends who swear by heels and will, maybe occasionally wear a flat thong-type sandal.

While I love my heels, there are times when I have to ditch them in favor of a comfortable pair, especially if it is going to be a long shopping day…….I want to make sure that my feet aren’t hurting when we head out for dancing later that night!

The Steve Madden knockoffs hit shelves back in 2008 and sold for $99.95, a mere 2% of Balenciaga’s original price.

We’ve finally been able to ID the gladiators that Mary-Kate’s been running around in for the last month! You can’t get them anywhere yet because they’re part of the forthcoming footwear collab between the Olsens’ Elizabeth & James label and Steve Madden.

The “Edge” gladiator sandal is one style from the Pre-Fall 2009 shoe collection. The designs are strong but understated – their mutability in color and style make them adaptable for different outfits and seasons.

The collection will range in price from about $270-325, and is now available for pre-order at Nordstrom.com.

The Olsen twins’ line, Elizabeth & James, is doing quite well, from a celebrity following to big name retailers.

The Olsens have attracted big name celebs such as Heidi Klum, Beyonce and Rihanna, all spotted wearing button-ups from the line.

Both Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Kitson in Los Angeles have reported phenomenal sales for the twins’ rags, with the senior VP fashion director at Neiman Marcus calling the line a “bright spot” in dismal season for sales!

Ashley and Mary-Kate are now in talks with footwear giant Steve Madden to design a shoe line as well as a menswear line planned for the fall.

Elizabeth and James’ lowest priced item is a one-shoulder cotton tank for $95, with a leather jacket going for $775 and dresses ranging from $225-$475!!!

Mary-Kate and Ashley sure are keeping busy!

They’re already working on a menswear line for The Row and an Elizabeth & James shoe line with Steve Madden.

Now, just weeks after the sneak peek at the men’s pieces for The Row, WWD has reported that the Olsens will also launch a menswear line for Elizabeth & James. It will be available at Barney’s this fall.

Ashley said the collection will be “about balancing uptown and downtown.” The sisters reportedly found inspiration in Oliver Twist and Peter Pan’s Lost Boys.

ONTD had a little sneak peek at the forthcoming Elizabeth & James footwear line.  I’d expect something a little more platformy from Mary-Kate, but I’m excited to see what else the Olsens have in store.

The collab with Steve Madden, hitting stores in March, will retail from $195-$500.

Slated to hit stores in mid-2009, the Olsens will serve as creative directors to Madden’s design and sales team.

As a regular fan of MK’s shoe choices, I am quite excited to see what they come up with!
