THE DAILY GASP: Prada Film Goes Grease Lightening In a Glam Gas Station Stare Down

Miuccia Prada has greased her lightening for the go. In fire bolt shoes and heartbreakingly ornate Susie Homewrecker dresses, the Prada Spring 2012 campaign video, shot by Steven Meisel, is a proper glare-down at the gas station. In effects like lacquered tail light frames and appliqués of dimensional lace, they pursed their deep red lips and charged at it like an old fashion drag race (and not entirely unlike RuPaul’s, because bitches are fierce). Bejeweled along collars, engines revving at the shoes, they’re off! We win.

QVC and HSN, once the domain of Marie Osmond‘s creepy fetishistic dolls and the legendary Joan Rivers Classics Collection has gotten a recent injection of diva with Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey taking to the air to hock their perfumes, clothing lines and pregnancy stories. For its first issue of the year, Vogue Italia, perhaps sensing a trend, tapped Steven Meisel and Karl Templer for this brilliant send-up of the home shopping networks featuring leggy ladies Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Sigrid Agren, Caroline Trentini, Gertrud Hegelund, Daria Strokous and Natasha Poly. And if that weren’t enough to get your collective hearts beating in anticipation, there’s a…video. Steven Meisel has once again taken on the job of beautifully creating another Prada’s campaigns.

The diverse casting of models with distinct characters such as the blonde bombshell or the noir heroine creates a utopian celluloid narrative. A virtual collage of feminine film iconography unfolds in this hyper-real gas station fantasy.

Louis Vuitton embraced this very aesthetic for the Spring 2012 campaign, taking models Daria Strokous and Kati Nescher back in time to an all-pink, sugar-coated ice cream shop. Shot by Steven Meisel, the energy of two young girls gossiping after school is difficult to deny.

Franca Sozzani Admits It Was a Mistake Taking Down Karlie Kloss Photo

Remember this photo of a contorted Karlie Kloss by Steven Meisel? Well, some people might not since Franca Sozzani and the kids at Vogue Italia took it down from the magazine’s website after it started appearing on pro-anorexia websites. Sozzani took to her blog today to dispel any rumors and explain her reasoning behind the decision:

1. The photos were not Photoshopped.

2. People don’t understand the different angles at which the body can be shot.

3. Karlie is not anorexic but actually quite muscular. Franca then goes off on a tangent about Kloss’ “buttocks” and supports Kloss’ healthy body with her status as a Victoria’s Secret model.

4. Sozzani, ironically, wanted to avoid a senseless debate because she is “aware of the fact that people can easily attach labels without thinking.” She then goes on to admit: “I made a mistake. I had to do what I thought was right, that is leave the picture and let everybody express their opinion freely. The picture is beautiful and that’s all.”

5. The editrix is a staunch advocate against pro-anorexia websites but instead of giving up on “experimental” photos such as this, she’d rather offer a course educating people about the history of photography.

6. Next time, just say it to her goddamn face: “Before talking, why not just ask? I would have answered your doubts before, without causing so many pointless remarks.”

Karlie, for her part, didn’t understand the controversy at all. She thought the photos were beautiful and was very proud and happy with the way the shoot turned out.

Karlie Kloss is one of the hardest working models in the game. From Vogue covers to the Victoria’s Secret runway, the 19-year-old Chicago native has had quite a 2011, crossing over into that rare pop culture terrain occupied solely by bona fide supermodels. So why not close out the year on a high, steamy note by ripping off her clothes and giving the kids a show in Vogue Italia‘s December issue, photographed by Steven Meisel. And there’s a lot of show going on.

To be perfectly honest, the female body frightens and discomforts me. But even I must marvel at the amazing work of art that is a naked Karlie Kloss — emaciated yet at the same time muscular (no doubt from all those years of ballet) with bafflingly long limbs, her body defies the laws of physics and perhaps even Photoshop. In between moments of undress, fashion editor Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele tries to cover the teen up in looks by Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Max Mara and Roberto Cavalli.

But really, who’s looking at the clothes?

Today’s gasp comes courtesy of Visionaire‘s record-breaking 61st issue. Aside from its breathtaking size – a whopping 5 ft x 7 ft — the magazine also features stunning portraits of fashion industry giants Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campnbell, and Karl Lagerfeld.

The chameleonic Evangelista has never been more gorgeous as snapped by Steven Meisel while Uncle Karl wanders through a forest of bare legs and buttocks, camera in hand. As for Naomi, she does what she does best — give face. A lot of it, courtesy of Guido Mocafico.

Lady Gaga Covers Visionaire 61, Officially the World’s Largest Magazine

Flopping onto Visionaire #61′s 5 ft x 7ft cover — front and back — is an oil-slicked, mermaid-tailed Lady Gaga, photographed by Inez and Vinoodh. The issue is certified by Guinness — and we’re not talking Daphne — as the world’s largest magazine.

The deluxe 5×7 edition runs a cool $1500 but if you don’t feel like breaking the bank, the standard edition — at 3 ft x 5 ft — is only a measly $375. The historic issue features work from Bruce Weber, the Stevens (Klein and Meisel), Mario Sorrenti, Karl Lagerfeld and a cadre of other artists and photographers given, as Visionaire puts it, “the forum to take their visions to a massive scale.”

So who wants to go halfsies on the deluxe edition? The standard edition is nice and all, but since the theme of the issue is “Larger than Life,” you might as well go big or go home. [Visionaire]

Steven Meisel snaps super Raquel Zimmermann on what allegedly is the A train — if the A train were full of attractive men in suits and not hobos asking for money — in Vogue Italia‘s November issue.

ZImms goes about her daily commute which includes hunching and posing elaborately — much like my daily commute — but with the added factor of hunky police offers stuffing passengers into already crowded cars like it’s modern day Japan or something. It’s times like those when you just throw your hands up, call in sick and head to whatever bar’s open. But Raquel is a pro — and is wearing head-to-toe designer — so she could probably just call a cab and bypass the MTA, or as I affectionately refer to it, the bane of my existence.

Marisa Berenson has led the kind of charmed, impossibly chic and devastatingly fashionable life that is all but impossible to replicate today. If only because charm, chicness and style are all but impossible to find today. Having lived her entire life in front of the camera — Marisa’s christening portrait appeared in Vogue and she covered Elle magazine with sister Berinthia “Berry” Berenson when she was five – guest editor and longtime friend Steven Meisel collected some of Berenson’s most iconic photographs, as well as personal pics of friends and families, in Rizzoli‘s goregous new tome, Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures (2011).

The granddaughter of one of the pillars of Italian couture, Elsa Schiaparelli, Marisa was “invented” by legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland at the age of sixteen, and became one of the most prolific models of the 60s and 70s. She graced every cover from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to Newsweek and Time and worked with the greatest photographers of the 20th century including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton. Then in the 70s, she embarked on a successful film career, along the way becoming, as Yves Saint Laurent dubbed her, “the girl of the seventies.” Featuring an introduction by aspiring popstar Hamish Bowles and a conversation with BFF for the last four decades or so, Diane von Furstenberg, Marisa Berenson: A Life in Pictures, gives insight into one of the most fabulous women to step in front of a camera lens.

What owning this book says about you: “I like my ‘It’ girls the way I like my drugs: pure, uncut and from the 70s.” Marisa Berenson’s rise to “It” status was pre-destined — glamour is literally in her blood — and she did it so effortlessly and so well that any girls aspiring to “It” today are but pale imitations. I’m looking at you, every socialite/DJ with a fashion fixation.

What will people say?!: “Someone loves them some artistic nudes and/or just loves a good boob shot.” True, Marisa Berenson had no problem flaunting what her mother, The Countess Maria Luisa Yvonne Radha de Wendt de Kerlor — a.k.a. Gogo — gave her, though her grandmother certainly did. After seeing a nipple-bearing photo by Arnaud de Rosnay, Schiap, according to Berenson, “was so furious that she practically threw me out of the house and disowned me.” But as DVF so astutely pointed out, “to show your tits was not a big deal at the time. To be young in the seventies was quite different.” Different i.e. awesome.

How this book will make your fashion brain grow: Berenson’s dynamic and daring photos offer a master class in brilliant fashion photography and moreover, in brilliant fashion photographers.

If you like this, you’ll love: Death in Venice (1971), Cabaret (1972), Barry Lyndon (1975) and I Am Love (2009) – Marisa’s work as an actress is almost as impressive as her modeling, particularly her first few films from the 70s. And 2009′s I Am Love proved that, even well into her 60s, she’s still an electrifying and stunning presence.

Beatles Reunion in the Material World

The quiet Beatle had a loud reception last night in London for the premiere of Martin Scorcese‘s documentary about George Harrison’s life. Based on the new book by the widowed Olivia Harrison, Living in The Material World brings the full story of George to light. On the red carpet last night, Scorcese facilitated a bit of a Beatles reunion with Paul McCartney and Ringo . ”I hope we’ll see a full man, not just a fab,” mused Ringo to the BBC.

Scorcese invited Paul McCartney and fiancé Nancy Shevell, Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison, Ringo and his wife Barbara to come together to celebrate the life of George Harrison and relive a bit of it through this epic documentary. He invites you to watch Living in the Material World on HBO in two parts on October 5th and 6th. All three and a half hours will be worth the watch.

Steven Meisel Accused of Double-Dipping in Inspiration Inkwell

Remember that gorgeous editorial Steven Meisel shot with Raquel Zimmermann featuring “before” and “after” looks? Okay, which one? W‘s a little miffed that Meisel shot a nearly identical story for Vogue Italia — something we pointed out ages ago – and rumor has it that the photog may have financed that shoot on W‘s dime.

The two shoots are not completely alike; after all W used 10 models including Linda Evangelista, Karen Elson and Jessica Stam, while Vogue Italia only used Zimmermann. And Karl Templer styled for Vogue Italia while Edward Enninful styled for W.

Still, the theme, and even some of the poses, of the two spreads are remarkably similar and they’re both in black and white, thus making the similarities even more apparent.

Sure this doesn’t seem like that big of a deal — fashion continually recycles itself, even if after only a month — but WWD, at least, thinks there might be repercussions:

“The fallout will be worth watching. If it damages W’s relationship with Meisel, [Stefano] Tonchi will lose out on a big-name photographer he’s craved for the magazine. If Tonchi doesn’t act, it will demonstrate the lengths a fashion magazine editor will go to appease a photographer who holds considerable influence in the industry.”

What’s Tonchi going to do, go to Condé Nast and issue a recall of all August Italian Vogues? Mesiel’s a brilliant photog — he just got a little lazy. It happens to the best of us. I got lazy when it came to the conclusion of this post…The End. [WWD]

Italian luxury brand Prada just released their newest campaign featuring ivory white fresh faced models.

Steven Meisel was brought on again to shoot this campaign. Prada has seemed to take a more colorful and youthful appearance in their latest ads. If you remember their last fall they used darker tones and bigger names. (See here)

This campaign exemplifies an anything goes attitude to fashion maximalism, and ultimate luxury. The brand really wanted to focus on the youthfulness and innocence that these images radiate while keeping their image of absolute refinement.

Out of dozens of hopefuls, only seven pedigree pooches made the final cut, along with Zuzanna Bijoch, Daphne Groeneveld, Gertrud Hegelund, Nyasha Matonhodze, Anaïs Pouliot and Fei Fei Sun.

Karl Templer did the styling, Pat McGrath did the make-up and Guido Palau did the hair…at least the human hair. But considering how classy these canines are, they probably had their own glam squad. [WWD]

Extreme hair, statement lips and exaggerated silhouettes may seem like too much when melded into one look, but they actually complement one another quite harmoniously in the April 2011 issue of Vogue Italia. Models Daphne Groeneveld, Lindsey Wixson and Kristina Salinovic demonstrate their “Personal Best” for photographer Steven Meisel in designs from the likes of Roberto Cavalli, Blumarine and Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere. Stylist Edward Enninful conjured 70s memories with punk rock hair, disco platforms and flowery prints, creating an electric and spirited mood for the commander of Italian fashion. But what makes this spread so spectacular is the intimate personality of the photographs; it’s almost like looking at pictures of very gorgeous, very fabulous old-time friends.

Italian Vogue – Oil Spill Chic?

How do you make an epic environmental disaster into a fashion spread? Is that tacky or brave?

Readers are quite divided over the controversial magazine editorial. The sight of a grey-haired (but beautiful) Kristen McMenamy is the first shocker. Models draped over oil-strewn rocks, trapped in nets, embellished with feathers. Models covered in dirt, oil, strangled with seaweed.

Some accuse the editors of glamorizing a tragedy.

I think that to reduce it as such would be too quick and narrow-minded. I believe that the spread is a statement on consumerism. This is a photo-editorial showing that the fashion industry does indeed acknowledge harsh realities in the world. This is a work of art by Steven Meisel and not an ad campaign.

The fashion pieces in the pictorial also served to showcase eco-artists and designers. In several photographs, Kristen McMenamy wears a seaweed-like rubber necklace. The necklace by Kathleen Nowak Tucci was made of re-purposed pieces of inner tubes from the Gulf Coast.
