Oh, the future. It seems like only yesterday that Al Gore invented the internet and cellphones were the size of universal remotes. But look how far we’ve come! The latest technological advance proves what streetstyle pioneer Bill Cunningham says — “The best fashion show is always on the streets.” — allowing you to shop the looks of your favorite streetstlye photos from the comfort of your smartphone. Introducing Kaleidoscope.

Through a collaboration with Modelinia, Kaleidcoscope launches today on Android with versions for the iPhone and iPad expected soon. With the app, users can see about 10 results from different stores for each clickable item. “Sometimes it’s the exact look. It’s similar to the idea of the look for less that people do in fashion — but it’s not just about a cheaper thing,” explained Sarah Kunst, director of business development for Kaleidoscope. “It can be a more expensive or a similar version.”

INTERVIEW: William Okpo Sisters on Inspiration, Family & Guilty Pleasures

William Okpo is the brainchild of sisters Lizzy and Darlene Okpo for the contemporary, confident woman. Named as an ode to their father whose killer style has always been an inspiration to them, the Okpo sisters have garnered a lot of attention in the past year. The brand is sold at Opening Ceremony in NY and LA; they have become street style stars for their amazing wardrobe, accessories and long locks; and they recently teamed with Brook&Lyn to create a cape and pouch. We caught up with the Brooklyn-based design duo to find out what it’s like working with a family member, their current muse and guilty pleasures.

What inspired you to become designers?

Like most young people who couldn’t afford the latest and the greatest, we found a way to make our own out of whatever was available to us. From there, we felt a constant need to create what we didn’t see readily available.

What is it like working with your sister?

It’s a blessing. Everyone should work with their sister. It’s definitely a new relationship you have to adapt to, of course. We get to know a different side of each other, the business side. The best thing about it is we act as a strong force because we clearly understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, there are never any hard feelings.

Who is your muse at the moment?

All the young people putting their right foot forward and following their hearts. We need more leaders and innovators in this world. We’ve been noticing more and more young people taking advantage of this creative movement happening.

As we all know New York City is the one and only place to truly define yourself. It’s filled with inspiration, the most random people, and best of all bizarre style. After discovering some of the best New York City based fashion bloggers, it’s amazing when you get five minutes into the busy minds of what really goes on behind the scenes of these fashionistas’ lives. That is why today the internet diva who knows New York City street style the best, Katya Moorman of Style Defined NYC tells us a little bit about her muses, how she got started, a couple favorite memorable events, and everything in between.

-How would you describe your blog in a few words?
Quirky downtown NYC.

-When and how did StyleDefinedNYC begin?
It began almost 3 years ago. I was a big fan of Scott Schulman/the Sartorialist but felt like he wasn’t
seeing “my New York” that is a bit more urban than urbane and has a strong nightlife streak. So I decided
to start my own blog!

-What is your favorite part about StyleDefinedNYC?
Sharing my experience of New York City with everyone else. I grew up at the end of the “club kid”
era and I love giving props to the nightlife peeps and their personal style. At the same time I’m a big fan of
emerging designers so have expanded to include a new section called UP|Coming that profiles them and
that I’m really excited about.

What is the hardest part of StyleDefinedNYC?

Staying true to my vision. I get tons of requests from PR companies to cover their events or products and
I have to be really careful about what I agree to write about. It’s also really important to me to have
all original content –not just grab things from other websites.

Three favorite Fall 2011 must have items in your closet right now?

I’m kind of obsessed with outerwear at the moment, so I’d say a black leather vest with an
asymmetrical hem and big faux fur collar -it’s “instant glam”, a cropped and boxy vintage leopard coat and a
black wool Alexander Wang coat.

-What is the best moment so far that you have experienced as a fashion blogger?

Well the best opportunity that came from blogging happened last summer: J&B Whiskey was having a party in Madrid with a theme of the Manhattan cocktail. They invited me over as an “iconic New Yorker” and had my photos blown up wall sized for the party. I am far from iconic, but it was an amazing experience! That’s one big event. But in smaller ways it’s the daily connecting to different people. I’ve met so many really amazing people simply by taking their photo and I feel I can go pretty much anywhere and see people I know, now.

-Do you have any favorite fashion/ photographer muses at the moment?

My two favorite fashion photographers are Steven Meisel –whose ongoing work with Italian Vogue is off the charts– and David Lachappelle. David doesn’t do fashion so much anymore but he has a great eye for the whole photo and really plays with color in a brilliant way.

- What advice would you give to an aspiring street style blogger?

Decide on a particular “angle” that will make you unique. Advanced Style does this really well! There are so many street style sites and sites that allow people to submit their own images that you have to figure out a point of view. Alternatively maybe you can contact a fashion or style site that doesn’t have streetstyle and offer your services as the street style photographer. That could give you experience and exposure. Finally, you can’t afford to be shy – but if you are just keep doing it and work through it!

-What music are you currently listening to on your iPod?

I have given up the iPod for Pandora and am a total Pandora junkie. Right now I’m switching between
a station I made called “Katya Chills” which is an electric mix of my favorites like Thievery Corporation,
the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and old classic bands like The Talking Heads on it and a Jazz Standards station that
plays Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

-As a street style documenter, what part of NYC would you say has the best style?

Well since I kind of focus on nightlife style I’d say currently I love some of the style I’m seeing at ZigZag – thursdays at Le Bain- but this is always changing up!

-How would you describe your personal style?
Constantly evolving! I am a platform heel addict because I need the height and I prefer jeans –either
skinny or super wide– to skirts or dress although there are exceptions. I recently went to the Daphne Guiness’ exhibit at FIT and found it utterly inspiring. I’d love to be able to dress like her, but since that’s not practical it has inspired me to eliminate t-shirts from my wardrobe. They’re sooo boring!

-Where do you see your blog 5 years from now?

Five years?!? I’m not sure! But I’m interested in pushing the photography angle further. I’d love to do shoots
with some of my favorite nightlife people that are a bit more controlled as well as shooting lookbooks for designers and adding video to the repertoire. But above all I’d like it to be a little time capsule of downtown New York fashion and style.

GQ made a lofty list of cities that bite the big one in the fashion realm. They hit the nail on the head with some cities, like with the Burlington, VT “Cool hat, stoner” comment, and Boston’s place at #1. But other cities had me questioning. Brooklyn? Manhattan? Kansas City??? Seriously, I’m not sure how NYC made the list, but much of it felt like Gentleman’s Quarterly simply pointing out the pratfalls of fashion in America. We’ve plucked out some locales that are trying, and have documented their fashion (mis?)adventures in street style blogs to prove it. And so, we bring them to you, 6 cities on the brink of redemption from GQ‘s scathing report. You decide if they deserved the beating.

Bonnaroo: Trippin’ on Street Style

Bonnaroo joins over 100,000 young music lovers together with the common objective of having the Greatest. Time. Ever. The festival went down this weekend in the hottest fun-brewing dustbowl this side of the Mississippi (and that side of the Mason Dixon Line). It was a feast (and challenge) for every sensation, and what everyone wore was truly sensational. I frolicked around with a Flip Cam tied to my body, sneakily capturing every outfit that caught my sparkling eyes. How to Tie a Turban in a Minute

The abundance of both traditional and stylized turbans in existence have fallen into fashion as of late, as you may be aware. I’ve been wrapping my cashmere scarf ’round my head all fall and winter long like this. Based originally out of necessity to shelter my ears from the cold, and the terrible noise I was subjected to at Death By Audio in Williamsburg on Halloween the night of my turban epiphany, I grew to adore its versatility and insta-chic effect. Now with Spring so close, I’m adapting my personal turban-tying method to lighter materials: silk, chiffon and the traditional cotton. Watch my instructional video for a way to turn just about any scarf into a fabulous turban. Then check the authentic Indian, African and other international lessons on how to master the real shebang.

FashionIndie Technique – Quite possibly the simplest way to tie a chic turban:

Wrapping your head from the back also allows you to contain your hair entirely within the turban. Tie or pin back a bun ever so loosely so it’s easy to flatten, and let the fabric cup the hair.

Indian Sikh (male) - the most basic traditionally male method:

Though this is a masculine turban, it can also look fabulous on a woman. The trick seems to be wrapping diagonally to perfect that starburst in the center front.

Indian Sikh (female) – seemingly the most time and fabric intensive feminine method:

White turbans like this often note a higher rank in society. Perhaps that’s why they’ve made it so particularly difficult to achieve.

Indian Rajasthani – less complicated, more colorful method:

So, our instructor might not be authentically Jamaican, but by the length of his dreads, he seems highly dedicated. Perhaps an old Rasta Man taught him how to tie this proper turban.

Emmanuelle Alt on The Daily and Outside at Fashion Week

French Vogue’s new Editrix is the talk of the tents today. Emmanuelle Alt had a full exposé in The Daily Front Row and took over the cover, though without an actual interview in the mag, we can’t be sure it was entirely conciliatory. Here she is coming out of Prabal Gurung, boxy jacketed and denimed as ever, and… what’s that in her hand? Oh snap! A Daily Front Row. She’s got a bit of light reading ahead of her.

The story mused over her beginnings, from the 90s assistantship at French Elle, Fashion Editor jobs at 20 Ans and Mixte, then her decade at French Vogue. They compared soundbites from Emmanuelle to quotes from Carine – it’s a little bit of who said it best. Though the Daily promises to answer under the radar questions, they were never really able to ask them. It’s mostly research and speculation. It was entertaining, but I’d really love the actual lowdown of what’s going on in her mind and at French Vogue.

Fashion kids might be border-lined obsessed with Rumi Neely’s Fashiontoast or clicking through the pages of The Vogue Diaries but even if they own the first spot in your stylish little black hearts, why not leave some room for the writers of all our favorite fashion sites and twitter accounts that keep us updated in the most wicked ways possible! It takes one to be able to capture an audience through slouchy poses, awesome clothes, and photos, but to actually be able to influence through fashion words, is major points! 1. LOOKBOOKS.COM- With more professionalism than the presidents of fashion, their blog connects the fashion industry through everything designers, street style, fresh faces, and interviews with creatives like Danielle Levitt. All names to know for any aspirational fashion guru, and if that isn’t enough they’re always giving away million dollar baby prizes like Manolo’s!

2. The Ford Models Blog- This is their second time being on a FashionIndie influence lists as they were on the list of The Top 10 Websites Every Fashion Professional Should Know and today making it second on our favorite writers worth reading! Fresh faces, and a wicked tongue on every tweet Damien Neva keeps us updated on model lust all day!

3. Modelinia- It might say it in the name but if you really want top news about any model, from endorsements to what shoes they wore last night keep up with Bianca Posterli our favorite blogger on Modelinia.com

4. @DKNY- If we only could wish this anonymous PR guru had a blog! But luckily she does have a Fashion Week SS11 for Elle Collections out on news stands now! And with tweets like “Do you ever notice that the light never turns red when you are trying to reapply to lipstick” to “Is there a word stronger than QUEEN for Drama? Queen is just not cutting it” this Donna Karan super tweeting girl is the one to follow from all things fashion, to laughing at her so true statements!

5. Collegefashionista.com- A website filled with Zuckerberg’s inspiration of creating a connection with every fashion guru throughout every University in the world! From Yale to the many campuses of NYU, Amy Levin has pushed the limits of what fashion means to a younger audience and allowing everyone to glimpse into the innovative styles that the young create, and follow! Any fashion business would be dull without a little CollegeFashionista.com in their life!

6. @IamSamLim- I’d be surprised if you all weren’t familiar with Lookbook.com ‘s Fashion Director & Stylist, Samantha Lim. A wicked fashionista taking on New York City with killer six in pumps no matter what weather, having the best closets any girl would kill for, and getting to attend all the best style filled events out there! Not to mention she’s ridiculously funny and can write up a mean article!

7. NYLON Magazine Blogs- Not only is NYLON magazine a wicked piece of print that we anxiously wait for every month but it’s also one of the best blogs in fashion whom the magazine’s witty digital director Faran Krentcil dominates! From songs of the day, to behind the scene fashion perks, and twisted culture, it’s all about the NYLON blog.

8. @COACD- Just like a modeling agency but better! Douglas Perrett a model-casting director says it like it is and keeps his blog running with fresh faces not to mention was listed under Refinery 29’s Fashion’s 50!

9. Refinery 29- From putting together the perfect outfit dictionary for just about any occasion any glitter-veined girl would have to attend, Refinery 29 is like the guide to a perfect and easy outfit life. Clearly with some of the best street style coverage R29 is rocking it!

I finally went out and shot some street style over the weekend, and it was the first time I’ve ever been refused when asking to take someone’s photo – THREE TIMES. These girls were insanely cool too… I’m a bit disappointed. They were all awesome quirky vintage and unexpected colour combinations. I’m thinking I might have to get the old sketchbook out and illustrate from memory instead so you guys get at least an idea of their style!

However I did get a few lovely ladies agree to be photographed, like this cute little nymphette above. It was also the first time I went out and forgot to write down details after shots, so I don’t recall her name! Oops. I’m still learning a lot. Anyway, I really liked her simple black ensemble on such a bright sunny day.

In other news, I also found some beards over the weekend, so make sure to keep an eye on Peny Lane to see them. And this afternoon I’m doing my third shoot for The Vine with someone I absolutely adore…. stay tuned!

The Independent, a British based newspaper recently mentioned this about altamira, “Dubbed ‘Models off duty,’ this blog captures the streetstyle of all kinds of fashion professionals including the industry’s best-known models, often predicting soon-to-be-famous new faces.“

The above is evidence which substantiates that claim. Not only has this site been recognized as the single most powerful concentrated resource for models street style on the internet, but over time, that reach and influence will just grow more and more powerful.

Right now I´m in Sweden enjoying the good weather and the delicious food. Even if I´m having a great time during the nights laying on my bed I think about Shanghai. I´m not ready to write a goodbye post about it. In the mean time I want to share with you the publication of my pictures. This time all four are mine and they appeared in the July edition of Grazia Magazine. It feels good to look at them, especially because they mark an important step on my life, not that I´m thinking of starting a full time career as a photographer, but it means that I actually accomplished my dream, the one I was thinking about during the last 2 years sitting at my old job desk, the one of living in China. Thanks to all of you for sharing this dream with me, thanks for the encouragement, thanks for being there for me.

En estos momentos me encuentro en Suecia disfrutando del clima y atascandome de comida deliciosa. A pesar de lo feliz que me siento, en las noches, cuando estoy acosatada en mi cama, pienso en Shanghai. No me siento preparada para escribir el obligado post del adiós. Mientras tanto quería compartirles la publicación de mis fotos. Esta vez las cuatro son mias y fueron publicadas en la edición de Julio de la revista Grazia. Una sensación de alegría me invade cuando las veo, especialmente porque son la prueba de un paso importante en mi vida, paso no relacionado con la idea de volverme fotógrafa. El tener la revista en mis manos significa que realicé un sueño mas, aquel que imaginé durante 2 años sentada en mi escritorio, el sueño de vivir en China. Street Style of the World: Singapore

First of all, thank you everyone for your generous input on our previous 5 Travel Fashion Essentials post! Some of your comments have inspired me to create a series of Street Style around the World, gleaned from our observation of during visits to cities like Tokyo, Paris, London, Hong Kong, and many more! I find it intriguing how no two cities in the world have similar street styles and fashion. I figured that we should start from where we are from: Singapore. What better way is there to start off the street style series than from the place we spend most of our time in? It will probably be useful to all of you travelling to Singapore or any warmer climates during holidays, as well. Here is my take on the street style of Singapore:

? It’s hard to summarize something so diverse as street style and fashion, but Singapore is known for its fusion of the east and the west. This applies to our street style too: You can see a distinct separation between Japanese-inspired fashion, and western influnced style. I would say it’s about a 50-50 mix of the both in the streets of Singapore, although sometimes you can see an interesting mix between the two!

? In general, layering of clothing is not a trend in Singapore. This has got to do with our warm and humid climate – it is simply too warm outside to experiment with much layering! (Doesn’t stop us from doing it, but we do have a flagrant disregard for dressing for the weather.) This applies to head wear like hats and berets as well. Without such warm weather, I am sure we can see a wider variety of styles on our streets.

? I would say the fashion, or perhaps culture, is to dress down in Singapore. For some reason (which I do not approve of), people think it’s alright to dress in t-shirts and slippers to shop in town! But let’s put aside my prejudices and focus on the street style: Lots of flats and gladiator sandals, shorts and tank tops. I have seen a rise in the number of girls wearing heels lately, but a large percentage of them still prefer flats to heels and wedges. Any boots that goes higher than ankle boots are rarely seen.

Tips for dressing for Singapore

I suppose this section would be pretty useful for foreigners travelling to Singapore! I hope this can inspire Singaporeans to dress up more as well, because it is entire possible.

? Like I’ve already mentioned above, Singapore is hot and humid year round, so breathable materials like cotton, jersey and chiffon is always in fashion. On the contrary, do try to avoid fabrics like PVC and leather. It’s too hot for them and you will find yourself sweating up a storm and having heat rashes – Not very attractive and healthy!

One additional tip for leather and pleather in Singapore. Heat and humidity encourages the growth of mould and fungus. Organic materials like leather can and will grow mould if you don’t take care of it! I’ve had many boots succumb to irreversible mould infestation. Pleather won’t get mouldy, but it will peel and flake. To prevent this from happening, remember to store your leather and pleather in a dry environment. Dry the items well should they come in contact with water. Investing in a dehumidifier will do you well in the long term!

? Layering is still very much possible despite the heat in Singapore. The key to layering in Singapore is to stick to light, breathable fabrics: Silks, Chiffons and tulle for example. Arissa shows you how it can be done here and here as well! I love how layering different pieces can create a totally different style and look, so do not discount this just because of the weather! Singapore fashion doesn’t have to be boring just because it is hot.

This Alexander Wang-inspired top may be made of jersey, but it’s light and breathable. Pieces like this are perfect for layering.

? Weather in Singapore can only be described as being erratic. It can be sunny one moment, and pouring the very next. Hence, it might do you well to carry a light cardigan or blazer around at all times. Furthermore, almost all indoor places in Singapore are air-conditioned. It can actually get pretty chilly inside! I always carry with me a jacket for those times where I have to spend time indoors with air-conditioning at full-blast. Scarves work equally well! It’s not uncommon to see many Singaporean girls wearing light jackets and scarves on the streets.

It doesn’t have to be a thick jacket. This one made of jersey from Topshop does an adequate job!

? We have an extremely efficient network of roads and public transport system. So it is entirely possible to wear heels without much discomfort! Heels can do wonders to an outfit and I find it a pity that most Singaporean girls have yet to integrate them into their wardrobe. There are only so much flats you can have before they all start to look the same. Kick up your style a notch by wearing heels! Some outfits look so much better with heels than flats anyway, heels does so much more for your look than flats. Wearing a kickass pair of heels on the streets is one sure fire way to stand out in Singapore.

Wedges are a comfortable and stylish alternative to flats.
