Simon Doonan has been called many things in his life. “The fox-crazy impresario of Barneys’ notorious windows”? True. Gay? Definitely. Style Icon? Yes, but he’s not quite sure that’s accurate. ”I read a column once where they called me a style icon and thought they were out of their minds thinking no one wants to look like me. I think there are several types of style icons.” Please allow Mr. Doonan to explain:

Robyn has been killing it since the mid nineties. Her love from the gays has been ever strong and present, while love from the rest of the population is always on the slow and steady rise. Her style is wonderfully wacky and way more wearable than that of Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. She dances on her own and you can bet it’s to her own damn beat. Now see 10 (of the many) reasons we love Robyn.

She recorded so much amazing material she had to spread it across 3 EPs and an LP, which is still going strong nearly 2 years later.

She's more or less been rocking the same hair for the past 15 years and it still looks great.

She's the anti-Katy Perry - she writes her own songs and can actually sing.

She turned her Indestructible video into a tube twisting science project.

She founded her own record label so no one could tell her what to do.

The name of said record label was inspired by a Dave Chappelle sketch, ("Konichiwa Bitches") Konichiwa Records.

She has a song called "Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do" First lyric: "My drinking is killing me."

It seems that the tides have turned, Madonna the chameleon of style has rocked her last look and unfortunatly that look is a that of a soccer mom. Even here at Fashion Indie we are kind of over Madonna’s style. But have no fear there’s someone waiting in wings that take her place, her daughter Lourdes. I know we’ve seen the geek-chic, American Apparel look on so many hipster, but Lourdes has the ‘tude to pull it off.

Welcome to a new feature here on Fashion Indie, Fashion Icons. Our first Indie approved icon is Rinko Kikuchi.

She has a versatile face that can be avante-garde with an asymmetric do or soft and ethereal with blond hair. She is fearless in her pursuit of fashion, which makes her playful with all her looks. And she doesn’t take fashion seriously, which is the way it’s supposed to be.

Style: Masculine/Feminine with a heavy dose of eccentricity

Why she’s awesome: She has style without a stylist saying so

On her own style: “I don’t like dressing in a very obvious Asian style. Zhang Ziyi can do that. When she wears a Chinese dress, it really suits her and she looks very cute. There’s no competing with her in that domain. Besides, everybody has their own tastes. I wanted to dress according to my own sense.”

That attitude towards style has made her a favorite with Kaiser Karl, he made her the face of Chanel’s Cruise Collection for Spring 2008.
