LINK LOVE:Sartorial Healing

Elvis, who would have celebrated his 74th birthday today, was more than blue suede shoes, capes, and jumpsuits.  

Like his music, Elvis’ fashion sense fused a variety of influences.  A true performer, Elvis’ style evolved over the course of his career, drawing inspiration from both his roots and personal tastes, and the styles of the time.  

Early on, Elvis sported the greasy black hair of a white Southern trucker (complete with sideburns) and the latest styles from black clothing stores.  By the 1960s, Elvis had been dying his hair black for several years and started a sort of hair-sculpting regimen. 

Before the theatrics of the ’70s, his style created a tight tension between good Southern boy and rock-and-roll bad boy.  Usually conservative looking –until he started moving– he often wore sharp suits, pegged pants, high collars, and the occasional pair of blue jeans.

Then over time he moved on to his Army fatigues, black leather, Aloha Eagle jumpsuit with cape, and flamboyant western outfits.

Well, we all make mistakes.  Whether a hit or miss, Elvis’ fashion will always be remembered for its individuality and influence on others.

Carine Roitfeld has phenomenal style. Her look is so versatile, it’s as if she could have come from any decade of this century. Roitfeld mixes and matches designers for a look that is all her own. She is a personal style icon to me because she unites two of my favorite things- fashion and journalism. I think we will see her doing great things for Vogue in the near future.

Love Love Kerry Washington…she is gorgeous and always looks great. Either mini dress or ball gown, short hair or long curls , this style icon knows how to flaunt her best features and show off her assets. She is flawless!

Maybe one of Andy Warhol’s most famous muses, Edie Sedgwick inspired the fashion world more than anything else. Her short hair, huge earrings and furs, dark eyebrows and ultra-high heels beneath pin thin legs were avant-garde during her generation. Sedgwick’s time at The Factory would inspire fashion for decades to come.

Clicking through “The Top 10 Oscar Looks” on People.com, it was obvious which dress was going to be my favorite. Audrey Hepburn’s 1954 Oscar dress is truly a timeless design. The belted floral Givenchy design was feminine enough to show off Hepburn’s delicate figure and bold enough to make a lasting impression.

The Old School: Jimi Hendrix

The New School: Omar Rodríguez-López of The Mars Volta can be caught on stage playing mind numbing guitar solos in a skin tight three piece suit and bell bottoms.

Rock and Roll is something that is never going to just go away or disappear. Though along the way things evolve and change, there are always glimpses back into the past that can be seen through it’s predecessors. However one aspect of the genre that stays fairly consistent is the style. Rock and Roll style is a look that I personally love because it seems so effortless yet cool (and I am a Rock and Roll addict). The styles of rock legends like The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix are visible today in the styles of the new school rock style icons.

The Old School: Freddie Mercury

The (Sort Of) New School: Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction is constantly rocking out in flamboyant, shiny outfits that balance on the edge of tranny mess.

The Old School: The Ramones

The New School: The Horrors. Trade in those blazers for leather and you have the same tight pants grungy dudes above.

The New School: Justice. This Euro Duo are my favorite DJ's around and don't really fall so much in the rocker category, but their love for leather, tight jeans and lack of hair washing makes me think of The Ramones rather that piece of crap Moby.

The Old School: The Rolling Stones

The New School: The Jonas Brother. Despite being pop crap, The Jonas Brothers have a style that reminds a lot of those Brits The Rolling Stones. The brothers are always in jackets and scarves with eccentric patterns and colors.

The Old School: The Beatles

The New School: Panic At The Disco. Looking the same but different is the key here. In The Beatles early days they were all about the suits and looking prim and proper. Well suits, ties, and boots are all in the wardrobe of these Vegas boys.

When the time machine is invented, the first place I’m going is London in the mod 60s. What could be a more amazing place and time for music, revolution and, of course, fashion. And no model defines the era more than Penelope Tree. Sure, Twiggy was a fantastic icon, but Tree had a uniquely outrageous style. Photographers could shoot her wearing anything in any environment, and it made a tremendous statement. Here are a few of her coolest photos…I’m going to find that time machine now.

I don’t care what anyone says, Sex and the City is one of my favorite shows of all time. Before they went and fucked themselves with the movie (costumes aside), these women were the queen bees. Typical, I know, but Carrie has always been my style icon. But ladies and gentlemen, can we please give it up for Samantha motherfucking Jones. If anyone crossed extreme style boundaries, it was her. She is the only woman on planet earth who can make hot pink and electric yellow power-suits look fabulous. Samantha Jones knows how to work the Cavalli without looking like Euro-trash. She wouldn’t be the same without her 10-pound jewelry, thigh-skimming skirts and clashing colors. She truly doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks, and it totally works for her. I hope to age with as much fierceness as Sam has. I leave you with the photos…they tell it all. And if you feel like bashing Ms. Jones for her unique extravagance, remember what she says: “I will wear whatever and blow whomever I want as long as I can breathe and kneel.” You tell ‘em sista.

I am convinced that Anjelica Huston is the most beautiful woman on planet Earth. She’s an extraordinary actress and director, has idiosyncratic style and continues to age with much beauty and grace. From The Addams Family to The Darjeeling Limited and everything in between, she remains my favorite.

Make sure you go see Choke. I was able to catch the sneak preview on Tuesday, and Huston does a brilliant job with her character!

Alexa Chung was one Brit who got in and out of the fashion game at a young age. Finally making her runway return for Vivienne Westwood during London Fashion Week, makes me think that the influence she has had on the industry isn’t fading anytime soon. When she “gave up” modeling for art years ago, saying that she would rather have a big brain than little bones, she never really gave up being stylish. Though I haven’t seen a very big change in her body, bowing out grcefully only to return on top again will definately make her a remembered name in the lifetime story that is fashion.

Coco Sumner is no stranger to the fashion, and is more than just another rock star offspring turned fashionista. With a couple Burberry campaigns under her belt, Coco is here to leave her own mark on the fashion world. Coco has been seen looking as hipster grunge as Cory Kennedy and as (dare I say) chic as Agyness Deyn. Recently seen at Andre 3000′s Benjamin Bixby party in London, Coco is just another youngster who is here to morph the fashion world.

At the tender age of 16, Georgia May Jagger has already found herself sitting front row at some of the biggest shows during London Fashion Week. I will tip my hat to this young lady, she knows how to dress. With a trendy father like Mick however, I guess it’s pretty easy. Georgia has already signed a major deal with the top modeling agency in London, and will only further develop into the style icon I foresee her becoming. So for all you little teens out their, burn your Hannah Montana posters, Wal Mart collection, and albums and jump on this bad girl bandwagon!

Who could ever forget the unique look of mohawked Mexican, Irish, African-American and Native-American winner of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 4? After what seems to be a three-year hiatus, Naima Mora is finally reclaiming her spot in the fashion limelight.

Despite her appearances in Covergirl ads, ELLE Magazine and Sheer Cover make-up commercials during 2006 and 2007, Mora just hasn’t had any influence in the modeling industry. Luckily, Mora recently appeared on the cover and in an editorial for Vicious Magazine in 2008. Even more recent, Mora walked in the Project Runway finale at Fashion Week for designer Joe Faris.

Rumor has it that Mora’s miniscule modeling career is due to her focus on music. As if modeling wasn’t enough, Mora is the lead singer for the unsigned band, Chewing Pics. The band’s EP was released in March of 2008. Hey Naima, do us a favor. Put down the microphone and jump back on the runway…the industry needs your face!

This little tween queen has been strutting her stuff and getting noticed. Young Taylor (also know as Jenny Humphrey on her show Gossip Girls) is a glamor queen and has quickly transformed herself from teenage starlet to a hot goth vixen. Even NY Mag took notice and documented her transformation. Check it out.

People sometimes ask me who my first fashion influences were as a young girl. I am proud to say my mom and aunt were two of my biggest icons. But as I grew into my wacky character throughout middle school, there were three other ladies I looked to for unique style ideas. Yes my friends, I admit that Cher, Dionne and Amber were my first huge fashion influences. Those Clueless girls would waltz through Beverly Hills in plaid mini skirts, thigh-high socks and marabou everything. My favorite purse- I bought it in honor of my favorite movie and tv show- was lavender patent leather with huge metal zippers and matching wallet on a chain. I carried it for years. So next time you see someone who could appear in the “DONTs,” just ask him or her in the words of Cher, “Do you prefer ‘fashion victim’ or ‘ensembly challenged’?”

The Academy Award winning actress Charlize Theron isn’t just great at her job but has a wardrobe to match. You can just look at her track record. Other than the movies where she is forced to look ugly, which is difficult to do when you look like Charlize Theron you can see her incredible style on the red carpet.

In this rare video interview by photographer David Bailey for his 1998 ‘Models Close Up’ documentary, she talks about appearing topless in editorials, the nudity backstage at fashion shows and being a trend setter – though not the good trends.

Like any seasoned model, Moss says you get use to it: “it’s your job, you have to take off your clothes and put more on.”

Known for being a trend setter, Moss talks about how she has been blamed for starting more than just a fashion trend. “I’ve been blamed for everything under the sun, anorexia, then smoking, then heroine… I just do what I want to do, I don’t think about being a role model or that sort of thing”

While recently flipping through a current issue of Star magazine, (which I only look at for the pictures, honestly) I came across this photo of the elusive Ashley Olsen looking sickeningly stylish, further proving my point that she is indeed the better dressed of the fashionable twosome.

Although I can sometimes appreciate Mary-Kate’s avante choices in wardrobe, Ashley always carried an air of quiet cool in the way she effortlessly manages to look polished and comfortable at the same time. Her grounded sense of style is definitely inspiring mainly because she always stands out without trying so hard, unlike her young Hollywood ilk, who despite their best efforts generally look like fashion victims silently begging for praise and approval.

She has an odd beauty, one that is distinctly French, one that us Americans covet. She is a model, actress, singer, and fashion designer-and unlike most, she can actually do all of these jobs well

Why She’s Awesome: Other than she’s French? She has great style without a stylist.

On her own style: “I used to put Indian leggings under short dresses, worn with tiny Grateful Dead T-shirts and Rollerblades, and I had long dreadlocks. By the time I was 11½, I had a stud in my tongue and tattoos.”

Lou can easily be feminine or masculine. Above she wears a fur cape and light floral dress. While below she wears tight jeans, a man’s shirt, and suspenders.

On her Modeling Days: “I’d go to castings and people used to think I was the delivery boy with someone else’s portfolio,” she says. “Then, suddenly, I was confirmed to do all these shows — Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Christian Lacroix — it was insane! It was a total disaster because I was so bad. Missoni sent me down the catwalk behind Gisele. I was, like, ‘You’re joking!’ This girl sends out her legs 1½ metres in front of her, and I went on stage and just had a laughing fit. Someone had to come out to get me and bring me backstage. The whole thing was basically one big misunderstanding, but one misunderstanding led to another and another, and suddenly I was doing campaigns.

“Gwynnie [Paltrow] and her less-than-perfect knees and short, short skirt was one example of how not to wear these sandals past the age of Pixie Geldolf.” This comment was stated by The Times‘s Carolyn Asome.

I must disagree with this statement, I think Gwyn looks beautiful (and is aging very gracefully), the legs stretch for days, are perfectly straight, and the shoes she wears are super cool. I believe that she is on her way to becoming a style icon (latest looks above).

She has a versatile face that can be avante-garde with an asymmetric do or soft and ethereal with blond hair. She is fearless in her pursuit of fashion, which makes her playful with all her looks. And she doesn’t take fashion seriously, which is the way it’s supposed to be.

 On her own style: “I don’t like dressing in a very obvious Asian style. Zhang Ziyi can do that. When she wears a Chinese dress, it really suits her and she looks very cute. There’s no competing with her in that domain. Besides, everybody has their own tastes. I wanted to dress according to my own sense.”

That attitude towards style has made her a favorite with Kaiser Karl, he made her the face of Chanel’s Cruise Collection for Spring 2008.

Okay, so you might not see the trend right away in this photo. It’s not the tied up button down or the boxers. It’s the Donkey Konga game. That’s right folks. Retro gaming is totally worth it’s weight in trendsetting gold. While Guitar Hero and Grand Theft Auto might float the boats of mainstreamers, most indies realize that the classics are truly where it’s at. You can probably pick up a Gamecube, Donkey Konga, and four drums for your friends for about the same price of one PS3 game. If you’re really trying to be retrolicious I’d suggest an original Nintendo which you can bag on ebay for about $20 bucks and classics like Super Mario World 3 and Duck Hunt and reminisce with friends over the good old days of 8-bit.

Goddammit Amy, you’re a trainwreck and still a trendsetter.

I can’t describe my love for Miss Piggy in words so I hope this video explains it as bluntly as possible.

Daniel and I were just having a conversation about who is the newest indie it girl when it comes to fashion, then I came across an article on Coco’s Tea Party on Camilla Belle, and I have to say I agree. She’s young, beautiful, has a great bod, and knows how to wear a great party dress, whether designed by the newest indie  or a big house name. “She is part Isabella Blow, part Audrey Hepburn. Stylists seem to adore her, possibly because she is a stylist herself. Camilla never uses stylists for events, playing the role of her own stylist.”

Cerulean is the new hue of the season, but not everyone can pull of that color. So another color trend we’ve been noticing is the deep blue. Gorgeous on any skin tone, and a good way to add a splash of umpth to any wardrobe, this color seems to be everywhere. Here are a few images courtesy of Coco’s Tea Party.

To say I love this hat would be an understatement. I want to make sweet passionate love to this hat, bury it in the ground, and then raise the half-man, half-acorn creature that arises from the demon soil of our sin. Super kudos for Sarah Jessica Parker for being brave enough to rock this look, full well knowing that all of America would question her style (and her sanity).

What this proves is that London, where this hat was premiered along with some little independent film called “Sex and the City”, is just a little bit ahead of the game when it comes to fashion. Don’t be shocked or appalled, it was bound to happen when Gap decided to introduce a pair of skinny jeans called the Williamsburg. Ya see, what happened was that Brooklyn got too cool to fast, to the point where it’s almost not cool anymore. London took over with it’s House of Holland crew, Peaches, and Ms. Deyn. Now we’re a few steps behind, but it doesn’t mean we can’t catch up, which takes us back to the hat. Sarah Jessica Parker is trying to show punk-poshed Londoners that NY still has a crazy sense of style, we’re still trendsetters and we know how to show it (in her case it was an acorn sprouting from her head. In your case it can be finally giving up leggings).

So thanks for giving us one final chance to prove our style worth SJP. I’m sort of glad the movie premiered in London now. Let’s remind these funny speaking nancies why NYC can’t be out sexed, but most importantly, out styled.

Okay, I lied there were huge doubts. Fortunately, Gwyny brought her Oscar ready A-Game and gleamed as the shiny suit man’s love interest/personal assistant. But what really stood out was how Gwyneth’s natural style came through in her character. Her tight form fitting skirts, her structured jackets, her tall designer heels. It seemed that Pepper Potts had the uncanny ability to look nothing short of super.

I actually like Anja Rubik Indies,  I actually like her!  In spite of the fact that she was caught posing with Chloe Sevignums’.  what a silly career move……..Jesus is not pleased!  I was all prepared to trash her and talk about her mamma and make references toward her being a promiscuous crack whore after seeing her with Chloe on the cover of Nylon (cuz I just knew she had to be on serious mind altering substances to even let her dead corpse be caught doing anything with Sevignums’), but then I looked her up and she really is something special, not a crack whore at all.

The Polish tart has graced various covers of Vogue abroad and has an impressive portfolio that made even ME do a double take….aren’t we impressed indies.  She’s also been getting booked like crazy since she chopped off her long blond tresses and got her Twiggy on.  Now even tho’ we worship Agnyess as our number one doll with a boy cut,  we think if Anja keeps steppin’ her game up, she might actually make us second guess ourselves.

That’s right Madonna, show them gangstas how to do it.

Seriously, can she stop setting trends for a few seconds. The shoes are DIY cute, the red tights so worth the look on the faces of the leggings crowd, the tutu style dress and the jean jacket. All apart they’d be a mess, but together this seems to work.

D&G Runway to Fifi 

Susie Bubble better watch her back. Another devoted clothes whore is making her mark with a series of web posts of herself wearing the hottest runway fashions. Of course this bit of competition is a bunny and illustrated.

Welcome to the fantastical world of Fifi Lapin, our newest style addiction, and fashion icon. One of 257 brothers and sisters Fifi’s life began ready for struggle vying for a top spot amongst the hearts of her rapidly growing family.  But tragedy struck home when all of her siblings were wiped out by an outbreak of myxamatosis (some believe Fifi was to blame since she was the only one who survived, but that’s just speculative since forensics are still a bit behind in the mythical bunny world).

“My parents are therefore incredibly protective of me and spoil me rotten. I’m an haress to my fathers fortune which he made playing fast and loose with carrot and lettuce shares on the international stock market. There are a lot of rabbits out there so I guess he just struck gold (or orange you might say). Some people think I’m just a socialite but I think there is more to me than just an extremely stylish clotheshorse!” says Fifi.

All in all the girl has got style. Whether hoping the streets in Karan Walker or hitting her favorite carrot bar in Marc Jacobs, this bunny can shop.

Do you know who designed this piece for Fifi? 

Launching her fifth collection for Topshop, Kate Moss took inspiration from her travels to make clothes inspired by Ibiza, Miami, and India. I have to say that this one is my favorite of her collections, and compared to the others that are still on clearance at Barney’s, I think this one might have a better sell through. Young, flirty, and fresh, the colors are great for Spring, and the pieces can be layered, mixed, and matched to fit any personal style, the boyfriend blazer is my favorite.

And now seeing it in Prada stores everywhere has not helped that feeling.

This collection was Muicca’s attempt to test editors with a collection that was dull, uninspired and weighed down with patterns that we’re far from flattering. Of course, when Vogue Paris’ editrix, Carine Roitfeld, got her hands on it she turned this monstrocity…

into this ….

Agyness Deyn‘s style is one secretly loved by young fashionista’s. The look seems to be an effortless mish mosh of wild colors and fabrics, but in truth it is the carefully put together look on this moment’s style icon.  The UK Times caught up with Aggy to grill her on her signature looks. Check out our favorite bits below…

The model of the moment, Agyness Deyn, is talking me through her outfit. “I’m wearing men’s lace-up boots from a secondhand shop in New York, white punk pants from Trash and Vaudeville, a Clash T-shirt, a vintage spotty shirt, a man’s cardigan with an old brooch, a coat from a brand called Buckler, and a leather cap I got in Tokyo,” she says in her broad Coronation Street accent. It’s a typical Agyness ensemble – “Proper mad,” as she might say – made up of random, inexpensive bits thrown together on the spur of the moment. She should look like a walking jumble sale, but instead she looks like the fifth Beatle.

The Manchester supermodel is having a day off from the Milan catwalks and explains that this is her version of comfort dressing. The day before, when she starred in the Burberry show, she made a big effort. Most models slip between shows in slouchy jeans and tees, but Deyn treats life as one big catwalk. “I was wearing serious Burberry heels and a dress that was this short,” she says, gesturing at her crotch. “It’s nice to go looking the part.”

Deyn’s rapid ascent to fame over the past year has seen her anointed as the Kate Moss of the MySpace generation. Like Moss, she is a one-woman trend factory. “Sometimes, I think it would be funny to do random stuff and see if it catches on,” she jokes. It’s all a long way from her Lancashire childhood; even 18 months ago, she was still a jobbing model. Deyn is only just getting used to signing autographs. “I never know what to write. I always say, ‘Nice to see you, to see you, nice. Aggy.’ Then I put a love heart.”

She now lives in New York with her boyfriend, Josh Hubbard, guitarist with the Paddingtons, and misses the British high street like mad. “It’s great for English kids. You’ve got your New Looks and your Claire’s Accessories. And if you love fashion, they reproduce it so fast, you can get it before the designer stuff comes out. I used to buy loads of stuff from New Look before I moved to New York. That’s why I did the Giles thing,” she says of her latest gig as the face of Giles Deacon’s Gold range for the high-street chain.

Deyn can’t remember not being into fashion. “My mum was always trying to get me into Laura Ashley floral dresses, and I’d be, like, ‘No, Mum.’ But now I love those floral dresses – with a pair of Dr Martens,” she says. For her, it’s not so much what you wear but how you wear it. These days, she loves slipping on men’s cotton or silk pyjamas with a jacket and heels. Her own fashion icon? The Queen, of course. “I love her Barbour jacket and welly thing when she goes out walking her dogs. Ladylike, but a bit quirky.” She collects royal memorabilia, which she displays next to Sex Pistols souvenirs in her apartment. “Plates, coronation pictures, tea towels and flags. It’s bonkers,” she says. And very Agyness.

Agyness Deyn Style

We are officially obsessed. Gwen Stefani in V Magazine is the picture perfect Musical ICON for our generation.  Let our parents have the crotchety, well preserved Madonna.  Gwen is all we need.

Of course, after we’re done with her (no time soon Indie, promise) who will we go to?  If Madonna’s OUT, Gwen is IN, then who is NEXT?  If any of you say Hannah Montana, I will take a machete to the face.
