Today was a chilly and gloomy one in New York City, but thanks to the fun and refreshing designs of Taryn Leigh Slawson, I’ve got hope that the sun will shine again! I had the pleasure of meeting Slawson at a party last winter and her bubbly and spunky personality is beautifully reflected in her designs. As a recent graduate from Colorado State University’s Apparel Design and Production department, Slawson had the opportunity to work with British designer Sue Stemp as well as women’s wear designer Diane Von Furstenberg…it’s no wonder why her collections are so colorful! Now, the proud designer of four collections under her name, Slawson is carving her name in Denver’s emerging fashion scene. Her designs range from girly and edgy to soft and romantic, a versatility so crucial for today’s young designers. Say hello to Denver’s future in fashion!

A versatile dress that has the best of both worlds, isn’t this what every girl wants? Well thanks to Sue Stemp’s cocktail collection, you can go from a bummy bohemian by day to a high fashion glam-girl by night. Really, it’s as easy as switching from knee highs and boots to tights and heels. Pull the hair back, throw on some makeup and you’ve got yourself a whole new outfit, more appropriate for the night life. Now all you need is that LG dryer with the “steam fresh” cycle and voila, a killer round-the-clock dress!

The entire collection was done in what the industry calls “made-up” colors (cream, ivory, and rose) with accents of black, all very reminiscent of the chic glamor from the 20s, and apparently flapper inspired. My fave is the poofed hair with the silk head band tied to the side.

“Spring/summer 2009 is an ultra-feminine take on modern romance, with a high-gloss, sporty edge,” Stemp reveals exclusively to VOGUE.COM. “Initial inspirations were the beautiful and infamous pictures of teenage girls by early seventies photographer David Hamilton, John Singer Sargent’s portraits and the restrictive sexiness of Edwardiana… And Spandau Ballet.”

“This loosely set the mood for the collection, which is dreamy and romantic in color and execution but young and glamorous in feel.”

Highlights, as told to Vogue, include embroidered Broiderie Anglaise and polka dot tulle dresses, draped skirts, high-necked ruffle shirts and slouchy tailored tuxedo sportswear, as well as a beautiful watercolour Blushing Rose print by artist Deanne Cheuk.
