The Best Breathable Fabrics for Cool & Carefree Summer Frolicking

Summer in the city can be both a blessing and a curse, especially if you don’t have a beach house to getaway every now and then. The heat mercilessly gets trapped within the concrete jungle, making it difficult to do much else but sit around in the air conditioning. But not too fear because there are ways of staying cool during the summer months just by getting dressed in the morning. We got to chat with expert wardrobe stylist Chrissy Volk about the best breathable fabrics and fabric blends to keep you cool during the summer. Check out her recommendations and our clothing picks after the jump.

Denim - Denim can be hot and heavy, especially when wearing a longer pair. Cotton jeans are the best for breathability, but pairs with stretch will move with your body. Chrissy suggests either a 98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra combination. The below pairs from Ksubi, J-Brand and AllSaints are great options.

Tees and Tanks - Breezy cuts made with soft fabrics are what to look for here. Chrissy suggests Pima and Supima cotton and blends with polyester so clothing retains its shape, even through inevitable summer sweating. Rayon is another great fabric to keep in mind as it drapes well and keeps its shape when wet. The tops below from Topshop, Vince and Erin Kleinberg look hot and will keep you cool.

Dresses - It’s difficult to go wrong with dresses in the summer, as most styles will help you beat the heat. But for that extra chill factor, Chrissy suggests cotton for every day, natural silk for more formal occasions and spandex blends for a body-conscious look. You won’t go naked with the below from Milly, Roberto Cavalli and Etro.

What to Bring: Bring a women’s evening wear sketch, portfolio, résumé, and garment that you have designed and sewn. And please people, this is an open call…lots of people, lots of talent…you want to look good…learn from the fashion mistakes of the Rodarte girls!

Open Call For Emerging Talent

Announcing an opportunity for emerging design talent; Supima has created a runway event to showcase the best upcoming talent with fabrics made from Supima, the world’s most luxurious cotton. The latest Supima fabrics from top international mills will be given to designers selected to create a women’s wear piece. The resulting design will be presented at a live runway show that will take place the evening of July 15th at Gotham Hall, NYC.

To be considered for participation, interested designers will need to present at an open call that will take place on Tuesday June 17th from 4pm to 9pm at the Thompson Hotel in SoHo. Designers will interview with a panel composed of fashion editors, established designers and Supima representatives.
