LOOKBOOK: Surface To Air x Kings Of Leon

While I’m not the biggest Kins Of Leon fan, I do have a ton of respect for what they have accomplished. With that being said, I am a bit confused by where Surface To Air is headed.
RANDOM: Betony Vernon’s Hand-Job Ring

Alright Indies, its been a while since my head was in the gutter, so I think now is as good a time as any to welcome it on back to the pages of Fashion Indie. Ever since I snagged my newest obsession, a polished three-finger ring from the Surface to Air sample sale, I’ve been a little too keen on multiple finger rings. I just so happened to come across this killer Betony Vernon ring today, and well, it’s not as innocent as it looks.
I wouldn’t go as far as calling Betony Vernon a nymphomaniac, but let it be known that the haute-couture jewelry designer always designs with sensualism, the spirituality, sex and body in mind. That being said, this double-finger ring is not only an aesthetically pleasing piece of hardware, it puts your fingers in the “chi mudra” position, one used for meditation…and giving hand-jobs.
I can’t fathom paying € 845.00 for this ring (yep. that’s about $1200), but if I won the lottery, this would be on my list of things to buy. WATCH OUT BOYS!

Surface to Air has nothing short of an incredible reputation, and this collection keeps that reputation in check. How sick is that leather bag above? They keep it cool and not too flashy, but the quality is guaranteed.

Surface To Air: Spring 2010 Preview

I love Surafce to Air, but I feel like they have lost steam after the whole Justice collection. Some of the pieces in this collection are good, but I’m not drooling on my keyboard like I used to, tear!

THE TEN: Best NYC Stores You Might Not Know About

Sick of waiting in long lines only to find that generic store in SoHo has ran out of your size? We’ve made a list on stores we love, and that you may have missed. We’re sure that some of you fashion peeps already know about these wonders, but we want to let everyone else in on the secrets:

Find the best shoes, accessories, and clothing from your favorite indie designers worldwide, without having to scour through tons of internet sites.
Inven.tory- Located at Lafayette and Spring, get GREAT deals (outlet pricing) on emerging designers, and catch up on the latest trends! Inven.tory’s inventory changes weekly, so stop in frequently to make sure you get the best stuff! They don’t have a site quite yet, but you can check out their blog for all the latest news about the store, and what you should be wearing.
Gargyle- Located on Orchard near Canal (16A), this store is aiming to revitalize the country club lifestyle, and features designers like Vena Cava, Fred Perry, Karen Walker, and Surface to Air (among others). They claim to love ‘golf, tennis, concerts, and parties,’ so if you fit into any or all of the above, or just enjoy ‘anything that lets us have fun with our family and friends,’ check out Gargyle. Shop online if you must, but to get the full country club party experience, you have to stop in!
In God We Trust- They’ve got three stores in town, 265 Lafayette, Ludlow btwn. Stanton and Rivington, and 135 Wythe in Brooklyn. Stop in for the sickest jewelry, antique and new, as well as fun, adventurous clothing that brings out the vintage nature in everyone. Love Brigade- Located at 230 Grand Street, you’ve probably heard us talk about Love Brigade, but we want you to love them as much as we do. Stop in and say hi to our friends, and get some awesome clothes while you’re at it!
Assembly- Located on Ludlow btwn. Stanton and Houston, this store is just for the boys (with the occasional women’s accessory filtering through). Get new and vintage clothing and accessories from the greatest collector in town, with tons of foreign labels and indie stuff, too. This store really has it all, check it out as soon as you can!

Kiosk- Located on Spring St. btwn. Broadway and Mercer, this isn’t exactly a clothing or accessories store, but they sell a bunch of random trinkets and other goodies that would be great for a DIY project. If you’re in one of those moods to look for something, but you aren’t exactly sure what, head over to Kiosk. Plus, they’re right next to that window that sells the mini cupcakes, which is awesome.
First Among Equals- Located at 177 Orchard, this store sells 0044, Bess, Dunlin, Michel Berandi, and more (just for guys). First Among Equals has recently opened a dark downstairs that you enter through a narrow spiral staircase, and enjoy a private shopping feel with handpicked clothes from designers, offering a rare flair that you won’t find anywhere else. Check out their site for up-to-date sales, but don’t miss out on this unique shopping experience.

Surface to Air / Sølve Sundsbø Collection

Photographer Sølve Sundsbø, known for his avant-guard manipulations, has collaborated with Surface to Air. Sick of basics and trying to incorporate prints into my wardrobe, I am in love with this collaboration. The images are mysterious, unique and their texture seems to jump of the screen.

Surface to Air Accessory Website Launches

The new Surface to Air Accessory Website recently launched, and with it, a plethora of amazing necklaces, bracelets and rings are available for all viewing pleasures. Inspired by safety and danger, the S2A accessories collection, consisting of jewelry and other objects, can now be purchased online. In addition to online shopping, visitors can also check out the S2A global stock-lists. The site is relatively basic, but the amazing accessories make up for the lack of digital pizazz.

TRENDSPARK: Perforated Accessories

Hot on the heels of the mesh craze popularized by Henry Holland’s dresses and Stella McCartney’s sandals — and on the heels of the YSL cage heels — comes another holey look.
Perforated accessories are popping up all over the place this Spring; and The Pipeline has a delicious look at this season’s best perforated accessories, for guys and girls.
Many serve as fun transition pieces; and the essentially sporty look can be made chic with the right shape. From Loeffler Randal platform booties (above) to Surface to Air black leather wallets, this trend is light, versatile, and modern.

Surface to Air Fall 2009 Shoe Collection

I’m pretty picky when it comes to shoes, but Surface to Air’s fall 2009 footwear collection is an instant success in my eyes. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of wedge heels, but thanks to Surface to Air’s buckled wedge open and laced booties, I have a newfound optimism for the shoe. The open wedges have a slight gladiator vibe but are more of a shoe than they are a sandal. I can picture both of these wedge heels worn with either tights and a skirt or straight-leg pants. In addition to the wedge heels, the Don Giovanni-esque black and red boots are amazing. Their slight heel and combination suede, leather exterior make them a perfect addition to a simple, solid black outfit. On a worse note, the men’s ombre sneakers I can live without. Thanks, but I’d rather see my boys spray-paint a pair of Vans and save $200.
Surface to Air’s fall shoes are slated to hit stores come August. In the meantime, shop Surface to Air here!
Thanks Pipeline!

Shopping for the new season is starting to show signs of life, and Surface To Air is ready for it. They just rolled their new Spring 2009 Collection out for purchase in their online store. The collection looks great, but I think it may be a bit on the Fall looking side. Regardless, it’s a great collection.

Five Winter Don’ts For The Sylish Man

1.) The Ear Muff: There is no easier way to look like a Wall Street douche bag than ear muffs, especially the behind the head ones. Ear muffs are like the shitty stocking stuffer gift that your crazy Aunt Myrtle buys you for Christmas. The main selling point for these stupid things is that you can wear them with out messing up your hair. If you are that conscious about how you look you should know better than to wear something so stupid.
Alternatives: Buy a nice knit hat that will keep your ears warm in the frigid weather. I recommend the Marc Jacobs one that is currently on my head. It’s $45 and it’s cashmere, it’s heaven.
2.) Cargo Pants: As Jonah Hill said in Superbad, “No one’s gotten a hand-job in cargo pants since Nam.” Enough said.
Alternatives: Anything with two leg holes and a reasonable number of pockets (5 or less).
3.) Face Mask: I really am blown away at how many people I see wearing these on a daily basis. There are so many different options that can make you look like you aren’t going to rob the Duane Reade on the corner. I can understand if your ugly, or you have a bit of clap residue on your lip from the stripper the night before, but come on Hannibal Lecter ditch the mask.
Alternatives: The easiest way to combat this stupidity is just pull your scarf up over your face. Grab a cool scarf from any retailer for like $20 and your all set.
4.) The Bubble Jacket: In a society where being “fat” isn’t looked upon with too generous of an eye, why would you want a jacket that makes you look that much bigger? It never really gets that cold in the city where you would need a goose down jacket to brave the elements. If you are going to shoot a documentary on penguins in Alaska I’m all for it, but if you are walking five blocks to work there are other options that won’t have you looking like someone from a rap music video.
Alternatives: Any normal coat. For extra warmth try a thicker wool coat, possibly with a fur (or faux fur) lining. A bit of layering never hurt anyone either!
5.) The Leather Trench Coat: Hey Morpheus the leather trench coat is no longer acceptable in the Matrix either. I was blown away when I saw someone wearing one of these on the subway this morning. Ever wonder what happens to those cows that are slaughtered for McDonald’s burger? They just hose it off, cut arm holes in it and tie the tail around the waist, resulting in a beautiful leather trench coat. So if you continue to wear this coat I’m going to ask that you sit your robot ass in the corner next to the dude from Grandma’s Boy.
Alternatives: A normal length leather jacket, or a normal trench that isn’t leather. I’m a personal fan of the Surface to Air x Justice jackets.
Less = More?

Don’t get me wrong I love Oak more than 99% of the other stores in this city, but sometimes they confuse me. I did my daily web store check to see what sales and new items have arrived at my favorite shopping havens, when I came across these two items that had me slightly confused. These are both identical rings from Surface to Air (available at Oak), the only difference is one is two finger and the other is three, however they are both $92! I have been sitting here trying to figure out how they could possibly pull this off? So on that note…
Dear Oak,
If you could explain to me the rational behind this pricing, I would love to hear it. I know there are a lot of rich people who come to your store and buy without checking price tags, but you can’t trick me. A comment below for all readers to see would suffice. Talk soon!

Surface To Air Wants You To Spend A Weekend Away

The Paris based denim phenoms Surface to Air have an amazing new leather “weekender” bag that I think looks great. Simple, spacious and fashionable, this bag almost make me want to go away for this upcoming holiday weekend. If you have the same craving, run over to Oak and grab it for yourself.
BBlessing Fall/Winter 08 Collection

I had a chance to stop by the BBlessing store this past weekend and check out this line in person. The jeans are awesome. They aren’t terribly expensive, and when I first saw them amongst the stacks of Rag and Bone and Surface To Air jeans, I couldn’t tell them apart. The tops are great as well, fairly straight forward key pieces to a look. So be sure to get out to the boutique on Orchard St. and pick up the latest from BBlessing.
Thanks to Selectism for the pictures.
