7 Silly Style Superstitions

Happy Friday the 13th! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to smash my face into some mirrors and tempt fate like it’s my day job because if the world’s coming to an end this year, why not go out with a bang? To that precipitous end, here are seven lucky — and not so lucky — stylish superstitions.

"These Have Always Brought Me Luck." In the Middle Ages diamonds about the face were worn to ward off the "Evil Eye," while Cleopatra would keep a giant diamond on her person at all times in hopes of attracting the love of Mark Antony. Jennifer Lopez, on the other hand, keeps a giant diamond on her person in hopes of denying alimony to Marc Anthony.

Comb-Over. Dropping a comb whilst combing your hair was said to be a sign of impending disappointment. Though in my opinion it's more of a sign that you're way too hungover and you should proabably just throw on a turban and call it a day.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall... There are many superstitions surrounding mirrors which were long thought to hold the key to your future, thus breaking one would more or less seal your fate. It's also apparently bad luck to look into a mirror by candlelight, and not just because it's terribly unflattering.

Knit Wit. Never knit a pair of socks for your beloved because he'll use them to walk right out on you. Then again, if that's your intention, bust out that yarn and go to town, girlfriend.

Put Your Shirt On, Flip It and Reverse It. Wearing your clothes inside-out was a form of good luck, but only if you kept them that way until the time you'd usually take them off. Otherwise, people might just think you've suffered a stroke.

Gold of My Ear. Sailors used to wear gold hoop earrings so they could pay their fare in the Underworld should they sink and drown. Of course, some sailors chose to wear gold doorknockers because they liked to have their decks swabbed, if you catch ma drift.

It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's a...Shoe. In England, it was tradition to throw a shoe at someone as they were setting out on a journey to wish them good luck. Naomi Campbell adopted this tradition as her own, but updated it for modern times using Swarovski-encrusted Blackberries instead.

The Olsens Top 2012 CFDA Nominees

Is it really that time again for the biggest prize in American fashion? Yup! The nominees and honorees have been announced for the 2012 CFDA Awards and it’s a full house. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have graduated from the Swarovski Emerging Talent pool to be nominated for womenswear designer of the year for The Row along with last year’s winners Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCullough of Proenza Schouler and perennial favorite Marc Jacobs. This year, marking the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s 50th anniversary, the awards will be presented on June 4 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tulley Hall in a ceremony hosted by Saturday Night Live also-ran Seth Meyers.

INTERVIEW: Nina Cortes on Her Jewelry Line & Project Accessory

Nina Cortes is the darling designer of her namesake jewelry line Nina Loren who you may recognize from the Project Runway spin-off Project Accessory. Nina was a force to be reckoned with as she made it all the way to the final two. Nina’s sparkling Swarovski designs caught the eyes of audiences and judges from day one with a gorgeous, wearable necklace crafted from recycled pieces. Needless to say, she won that challenge and continues to gain interest with her elegantly-edgy pieces. We caught up with the accessory guru to get to know her better off-screen, and she is just as sweet and funny as on the show.

What was your journey on Project Accessory like? How did it feel to make it all the way to the end?

Like everyone from the show has said, it was a total roller coaster. One second I was super happy with my design, then I would look around the room and feel intimidated and second guess myself. As far as highs and lows of the coaster ride, the first day I swore I was going home, so you can imagine how great making it to the final two felt!

Have you always wanted to create jewelry?

I was always a creative person, always inventing something to make. I played around with some jewelry, which when I see it now I can’t help but laugh, but hey, you have to start somewhere. But it wasn’t until I took a metal-smithing class in college I decided this was what I wanted to do.

What are your inspirations for your upcoming collection?

I’m really bringing it home this year. I’m always looking out to find inspiration, but my Miami girl roots are really coming through for this next line. I’m really feeling the beach but the earthy side of it. Industrial diamonds pulling the color from our sands, Apatite for our unmistakable ocean – I love it. I’m really excited for this line. It’s my favorite to date!

The Biebs and Olivia Wilde turned lit up together. I'm talking Christmas Trees here. Bieber plugged his new Christmas album while Rockefeller Center plugged in NYC's largest tree. Olivia Wilde introduced the 9.5 foot, 550 pound, 25,000 crystal encrusted Swarovski tree-topping star.

Harper's Bazaar hosted an art show in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Swarovski ornament. Five artists got inspired by sparkles, and created works of art with donated Swarovski crystals. This work is by Natasha Law, called Glimmer. See one more ahead.

The Chronicles of Condé Nast: The André Leon, the Wintour and the Vogue Closet

Kelly Florio Kasouf, the daughter of the late Steve Florio — former president and CEO of Condé Nast — has written the chicest children’s book of the year about growing up in and around the publishing house. The Adventures of Sophie and the City: All in a Day’s Work follows a little girl as she’s whisked away into a magical world of fictionalized Vogues and Vanity Fairs and oh, the people she’ll meet!

There’s an André Leon Talley-esque character, clad in a Louis Vuitton cloak and a fairy godmother bearing a striking resemblance to Isaac Mizrahi in Swarovski crystal wings. I would assume Anna Wintour would be cast in the role of some sort of wicked witch, but Florio Kasouf’s memories of her are actually rather fond. The author recalls having her first lunch with the editrix at age 10:

“She asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said, ‘I’m going to take your job.’ Apparently she had said the same thing early on in her life, so she thought it was cute.”

Yeah, Wintour thought it was real cute. Next thing Kelly knew she was being sent off to live with seven queens who looked for diamonds all day and ended up fighting for her young life after Anna, disguised in Yohji Yamamoto, fed her a poisoned stick of gum.

Anyhoo, The Adventures of Sophie will be sold exclusively at Barneys — naturally — but it being the future and all, there will also be an app for it. And they all lived fiercely ever after. [WWD]

Hussein Chalayan Goes on Display

Cyprus-born designer Hussein Chalayan gets his first major retrospective at Les Arts Décoratifs, opening Tuesday in Paris.

“Hussein Chalayan: Fashion Narratives” charts Chalayan’s elaborate constructions and innovative presentations over the past 17 years of his career, beginning with his graduation show from Central Saint Martins in 1993. Missing from the exhibit, however is Chalayan’s 1998 “chador” collection because, as the designer puts it, “I don’t need more headaches.”

The exhibit is supported by Swarovski and features six designs bearing the precious crystals, including a dress with lasers and one with a morphing hood. “Hussein Chalayan: Fashion Narratives” will be on display through November 13th. [WWD]

The Alexander Wang Man Won’t Be “About Exposing His Chest”

While the Alexander Wang woman is a sex-crazed risk-taker the Wang man is a bad boy — a delinquent — on which the Wang gal secretly crushes. For his first full-blown mens line — after his award-winning capsule collection in the fall — the designer was inspired by bad boys like Diplo, Wiz Khalifa and Johnny Depp – “But not Pirates of the Caribbean Johnny Depp. Nineties Johnny Depp.” What, the guy from those 12,000 Disney movies isn’t as badass as Edward Scissorhands?

Menswear wasn’t always in the cards for Wang. His T by Alexander Wang line started off as a “vanity project.” He claims he “just wanted to do stuff [he] wanted to wear.” But after GQ named him Best New Menswear Designer in America and he was nominated for the CFDA’s Swarovski Menswear Design Award, he got the message:

“That was like, ‘Whoa.’ You know, awards are great, but they put you on fast track — you have to do this, you have to do that. Now we can breathe and go back to focusing on this new line.”

This new line will have, according to Wang, “a more refined point of view” with slicker fabrics, sleeker lines and “less flashy” embellishments. And that translates to a less sexually-charged aesthetic than his womenswear: “[M]y guy isn’t about exposing his chest. It’s not the male gigolo.”

Capt. Jack Sparrow probably wouldn’t approve. [WWD]

Stars Grazing at the CFDA Awards

Looks like the CFDA Awards will be a star-studded affair, featuring celebrity’s on stage, in the audience and, most importantly, drunk and sloppy on the red carpet.

Sofia Coppola will present good friend and longtime fag to her hag, Marc Jacobs with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, amidst a roar of boos. Somehow Jessica Alba scored an invite and will hand over the Founders Award to Hal Rubenstein and sexy septuagenarian Grace Coddington will hurl the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute Award to an unsuspecting Arthur Elgort. Karolina Kurkova, not to be outdone, will present the three Swarovski Awards.

Meanwhile, Patrick Ervell dug up Kirsten Dunst for his date, Micahel Kors will be chaperoned by Ashley Greene and Calvin Klein‘s Francisco Costa by noted actress Kerry Washington. Liv Tyler forsake frequent gal-date Stella McCartney for the humpy Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler and last but not least, Chlöe Sevigny will stumble into the ceremony with MAC Cosmetics.

This should make the FiFis look…well, like the FiFis. [WWD]

Granny Chic: Simply a Product of Abject Laziness

Feeling lazy? Don’t get yourself down. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen may have created a multi-billion dollar empire out of laziness.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are living the high life as of late, with a CFDA Award nomination and a successful brood of fashion lines under their boho belts. The sisters, notorious for their grungy, “hobo chic” style, recently dished to Style.com about their inspiration:

Ashley: That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection.

Mary Kate: For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow?

A: Yeah, we were California girls.

MK: I think it was probably that. And laziness.

And there you have it; the purveyors of granny chic themselves have chalked it up to a combination of being cold and lazy.

Yet the Olsens are anything but lazy, competing with the likes of Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the CFDA Awards, and micromanaging ever aspect of their fashion line, The Row.

On the success of their multiple lines, including the Row, Ashley says, “I feel like it’s been this constant slow growth but a consistent growth.” Mary-Kate adds, “all the companies run on their own.” We get it Mary-Kate, you’ve only been in forty two movies. You’re obviously incredibly lazy.

The dresses retail for around $200, meaning that there’s no reason to make your maids wear something awful and tacky besides the fact that you hate them and don’t want them looking better than you. - Vogue Nippon‘s Anna Dello Russo has had her incredible style immortalized with her very own Barbie. Mario Paglino and Gianni Cossi of Magia 2000 created the custom doll in the Dolce & Gabbana lace dress and leopard clutch Dello Russo wore to the Burberry Spring 2011 men’s show. - Models Agyness Deyn and David Gandy and designer Henry Holland ran the London Marathon on Sunday. Holland shut it down with a time of 3h 28m — maybe his running gear had something to do with it. Gandy came in with a time of 4h 35m and Aggy in 4h 45m, despite bad knees from a skiing accident and running in 5-inch heels, respectively. [Vogue UK]

Wearing hats for everyday occasions is unfortunately a dying art for the modern woman. More casual times call for more casual, and many times sloppy, dressing habits. But not to fear! I am here to save the ladylike hat one head at a time. If you’re not sure what type of head wear is appropriate for certain occasions, the guide below should be a great help to you. Now you have no excuse for leaving the house without one.

1. Spying on your man in church. You never know when pulling a Carrie Bradshaw and spying on your own Mister Big is going to take you into God’s house. Make sure you’re prepared with wrist gloves and a Sunday hat that will knock his mother off her pew. For a colorful, sophisticated look, try Linea Large Brim Spikey Feather Hat, Nordstrom ‘Drama’ Wide Brim Straw Hat and Kaliko Bright Pink Straw Bow Hat.

2. Cruising on a doomed ship. Vacationers on the Titanic didn’t know about their impending fate, so they were all riding the fabulous high horse. Red Carpet Ready Looks At Lorena Sarbu

Inspired by 1920’s opulence and glamour, the Lorena Sarbu Fall 2011 Couture Collection features art deco-inspired patterns and elaborate beading. The collection includes elaborate, pleated tulle and organza styles, encrusted with Swarovski crystals; Luxe embellishments include leather details, ostrich feathers and the finest French laces. This season’ color palette includes rich shades of amethyst, emerald green, deep slate blues, cappuccino and metallic tones.

As a stylist I found so many great red carpet contenders. The pictures don’t do the collection justice because in person the dresses sparkle and have a beautiful shine and class to them.

Mimi Plange’s Autumn/Winter 2011 Presentation

Designer Mimi Plange started her original line, Boudoir D’Huitres in 2007 but last night marked the line’s re-launch, under the designer’s own name. Opting for a presentation in lieu of a runway show, Plange showcased 28 beautiful looks at 320 Studios as part of her collection entitled, “Scarred Perfection.”

The name and collection takes inspiration from the ancient practice of African tribal scarification, a method of tribal identification that dates back thousands of years.

Plange, a native of Ghana, set out to translate this form of body modification into her designs with the help of André Leon Talley, who generously helped her edit the collection.

Backstage the designer expressed a desire for the clothes to act like armor, which was perfectly illustrated in a black sculptural gown in silk gazaar that would not look out of place on a Dior Haute Couture runway.

Other highlights included a cape (I am always a sucker for a cape, as is ALT) in a combination of wool, cotton, mohair and leather; a two-tone felt dress beaded with Swarovski crystals; and a showstopping, detail-rich satin gabardine dress with ruffled pleats.

The tribal scarification theme could be seen in many of the looks’ tough but feminine textures. However, Mimi Plange’s “Scarred Perfection” came off perfectly unmarred.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Version of “Liking” Someone

Like everything he comes even into relative contact with, Karl Lagerfeld has an opinion on Emmanuelle Alt‘s recent appointment to Editrix-in-Chief of Vogue Paris: ” Her style is her big shoulders, long legs, tight jeans, sleeves up to the elbow, one hip out. I personally like her.”

The Kaiser went on to croak Alt’s praises: “She’s a handsome French woman. She has a style, but is it enough to make a whole magazine?”

Well, it’s a valid question, one that Lagerfeld will surely answer in his usual straight-forward way, though he said he would “reserve judgement” until she spearheaded a few issues.

Karl Lagerfeld is great at many things, but reserving judgement?

How much longer do we have to wait before he declares French Vogue officially dead, has Baptiste Giabiconi steel away in the night to behead Emmanuelle Alt and use her Swarovski crystal-encrusted skull as the centerpiece for one of Chanel‘s Resort collections?

Seriously, I’m taking bets.

Yes, I have an inner Audrey Hepburn. This particular event is very exciting though, it involves the 70th anniversary of The Wizard Of Oz, the world’s best shoe designers and The Elizabeth Glazer Pediatrics AIDS Foundation.

“If Dorothy were living in the 21st century, what would she wear?” was the question answered by The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection, a creative re-interpretation of one of film’s most iconic and revered symbols which has captured the hearts and imaginations of people the world over. Designers, including A. The public has one final chance to view The Ruby Slipper Collection in entirety at the Swarovski CRYSTALLIZED™ flagship store at 499 Broadway in New York City from September 10th — 23rd; the exhibit will be run simultaneously to the online auction.

Also featured in the auction are select pieces from The Inspirations of Oz Fine Art Collection which premiered during the highly anticipated and revered Art Basel Miami Beach 2008. An acclaimed array of artists were among the chosen few selected to re-interpret The Wizard of Oz through their own unique visions and artistic mediums. Dennis Tompkins worked with Michael Bush to create an “over the top” wardrobe for the tour:

1. A THRILLING JACKET: Costumers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins re-created Jackson’s iconic looks for each of the 26 songs he was to perform, but the singer asked, “How can we take it to the next level?” Bush recalls. The solution? Fiber-optic lights sewn onto his red leather “Thriller” jacket, for a surprise light show timed to the music.

2. OLD FAVES: Jackson was going to back his signature crystal glove and socks, which caught the light — and assured that even fans in the back could see him dance. “He was so excited to perform,”says Bush.

3. A MILITARY SALUTE: For the star’s rendition of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” Bush and Tompkins created a “regimented, military” look.

4. BELTS AND WHISTLES: Tompkins had to make sure items like this jeweled belt would fit Jackson’s slight 27 3/4 inch waist, but says his weight was not an issue: “He was a bit smaller, but he was always thin.”

5. MAJOR DANCE MOVES: Jackson’s new Billie Jean suit held 7.5 lbs. of Swarovski crystals and 60 lights, so the star made sure he could do a spin before signing off. “The dance came first; costumes were secondary,” says Bush. “And his moves were sharper than ever.”

“Gaga called me and said she wanted to be in a wheel chair. She wanted me to design it and not the prop department. I took it upon myself to drive to East L.A. and exchange the wheels for some low rider ones. I ordered some Gucci fabric and handed it over to my genius friend/designer Michael Schmidt so he could embellish it with Swarovski crystals. Originally, we made a metal logo that read “Gaga” on the wheels, but she disliked the font and we ended up exchanging it for the Chanel logo.” B Akerlund on Gaga’s vehicle of choice for her Paparazzi Video.

Roberto Cavalli’s $30 Million Nightclub Opens

Roberto Cavalli opened his first 30 million dollar nightclub in Dubai on Thursday, which boasts a restaurant, Swarovski crystals hanging from the ceiling, and furniture with animal-print upholstery, bonus features include a sushi bar and boutique selling jewelry, watches, and Cavalli’s favorite Italian food.

Cavalli hopes to open another club in Milan next month.

RUNWAY RUNDOWN: Balmain Fall 2009

Christophe Decarnin’s Fall 2009 Balmain collection had me singing “Night Fever” throughout the entire duration of the show. Swaroviski crystals bedazzled nearly every look, from the skin tight micro dresses to the quilted leather mini skirts, giving off a disco ball shine. Favorites included the front-slit silk pants, skeletal print drapey tees and the always appreciated, über dramatic, über shoulder-padded jackets. Overall, the collection was fun, yet glamorous, 70′s nightlife array of items…unfortunately, creativity seemed to run low as pieces from the collection repeated themselves.
