Maui Babe Browning Lotion: My all time favorite tanning oil is brewed by a family recipe in Hawaii. Used over SPF 30, this will give you that true brown, not orange, you crave.

Alba Botanica Coconut Dry Tanning Oil: Made with coconut oil and a substantial SPF, this all natural product protects and serves.

Clarins Sun Care Spray: With SPF 15  built in, and a non-oil base, this promises to protect from the sun and give you a natural glow.

Australian Gold Intensifier: With Colorboost(TM) maximizer made from carrot seed, banana extract and aloe, this makes and attracts color at the same time. Use over SPF 30.

No-Ad Style Dark Tanning Oil: It has an SPF 4, which is essentially nothing. But it’s non-advertising scheme keeps it cheap at around $6.50. Use over higher SPF.

Ocean Potion Xtreme Intensifier: Certainly needs SPF underneath, but it’s properties, including tea tree oil, help make you tan and hold it fast longer.

Ed Hardy Diving Dragon Spray Oil: Ed Hardy is of the GTL persuasion. But again, pairing it with an SPF will keep you looking less Jersey Shore and more like yourself, only tanner.

Bain de Soleil Orange Gelee Sunscreen: This product promises a deeper glow and a longer lasting tan. And it’s Paraben free, so you’ll at least be avoiding that kind of cancer.

Arizona Sun Tanning Oil: With an SPF of 3 and a whole host of tanning agents, this will get you brown. Again, use SPF 30 as a base so as to not burn to a crisp.

Banana Boat Protective Tanning Oil Spray: This had been a staple in my tanning ritual for many years before the time of Maui Babe. It’s got a solid SPF you can feel good about, and results that make you dark.

Disclaimer: Any oil use will attract the sun more so than just SPF alone. It can lead to more skin damage and leaves it more susceptible to the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. Sun bunnies, you’ve been warned. But we doubt this is news to you, so all we can say is tan responsibly.

The Soho House – If you can find a dear friend (or at least a one night stand) in someone with a membership to this über exclusive British import, you can access their famed rooftop pool. Rub elbows with celebrities, or at the very least, their publicists.

Le Bain – On the roof of The Standard lies a bed of high tech synthetic grass, on which you’ll find giant plushy waterbed poofs and beautiful people.

Le Parker Meredien – For $50 a day you can use this just-south-of-the-park rooftop pool and all of the hotel’s amenities. A touch pricey, yes, but free of screaming children and pisswater.

The Gansevoort & The Gansevoort Park – Uptown or down, get free entrance and steep drinks. Lovely views, but beware – the BnT crowd has discovered (and invaded) this gem. ***UPDATE*** They don’t let the questionable crowd in on Sundays. Only beautiful people with slippery morals.

More of a free spirit?

Park your beach bum at any of these NYC Parks, Piers and other Public Places:

Central Park – Duh. But check out these key layout spots: Sheep Meadow or The Great Lawn. Or find a giant slab of rock face and bunker down, they make surprisingly comfortable beds.

Clinton Cove - This stretch of park at Pier 95 at 55th st on the West side. Tan with a water’s view and real grass beneath you.

Christopher Street Pier – River view tanning in the West Village, but the pier is made of wood, so perhaps bring a beach chair for prime comfort.

Bryant Park - Midtown crash tan in the middle of work. Grab lunch at Hale and Hearty or Le Pain Quotidien and bake in the sun.

Battery Park - Find the sun in the Financial District and a view of Lady Liberty.

High Line – This train track turned eco-walkway has parts lined with lounge chairs and stunning water views.

Master Moocher?

Call every single one of your Manhattanite friends and inquire about the state of their rooftops. What? You can only access it by climbing out a window and up a ladder on the fire escape? Sounds great! If you’re lucky, you’ll find a friend at 300 Mercer – UHmazing rooftop.

U.S. lawmakers are considering a ban on teen tanning bed usage, following a similar motion recently passed in England and Wales. Reasoning behind this has much to do with the WHO’s classification of tanning beds as a Class 1 carcinogen, just like cigarettes and plutonium. Oh great, so now they’re going to ban my plutonium usage. [ABC News]

It’s no secret that people love to bend the rules, but what happens when people just flat out ignore them all together? With all of the uproar surrounding recent tanning laws and taxes, people thought they would test out the severity of the legislation. The Post followed a 14 year old girl around to various tanning salons and she breezed through all of them without any problem! They never even thought to ask for her age.

With the second season of Jersey Shore approaching us, Snooki sat down with Meghan McCain for quite the interesting interview. As for Obama’s tax on tanning Snooki says, “Um, I really don’t see the reason why there would be a tax on tanning, because so many people go tanning even though they’re not, like, Guido/Guidettes.” Other side notes? Her personal role models include Kendra Wilkinson and Tori Spelling, and she voted for John McCain because “he was really cute”.

Sometimes when you’re lying out on the beach you can get a bit distracted; you end up spending hours in the ocean, or you may even fall asleep to the tunes playing on your iPod. Hours later you wake up or walk out of the water and you’re burnt to the crisp because you never reapplied your sun block after the first layer. Well now, just in time for summer, there’s the new UV SunSense wristband.

The band changes colors after a certain amount of time, which reminds the wearer that they need to reapply their sunscreen. How does it work? Apply the same sunscreen that you’re applying to your body on the wristband itself. The wristband then measures UV length and detects when you need a reapplication. Pretty creative, especially if you’re a bit forgetful. The only problem: What about that tan line left by the wristband itself?

Forget the tanning tax, it’s time for the teen tan ban. News has it there have been talks about a teen fake tanning ban in the state of New York. The ban would affect any individuals under the age of 18. Currently, minors over 14 only need parental permission to hit the tanning beds, but the new law would make it illegal even if the parents do approve. What do you think? Is this fair?

Ever since the tanning tax was instated a couple of weeks ago, salon owners have been praying that the extra cost wouldn’t cut the number of their sales. Well, long story short, those dreams just haven’t come true. The new 10% tax  has already caused a huge dip in the tanning population. Experts, referring to the issue as the tanning “genocide”, have projected that the loss will result in over 9,000 lost jobs by the end of 2010, along with 1,000 business closures. Guess they’ll have to find a safer line of work!

Ever since the passage new health-care reform, we should be expecting a rise in tanning costs! The new bill requires a 10% tax in tanning salons, but not for the safe procedures like spray tan. The plan is supposed to make some serious money over the next few years, but needless to say, a whole lot of people aren’t too happy. Here you have it, yet another reason to head for a harmless option.

A couple weeks ago we told you that the tanning beds had been deemed a class 1 carcinogen, just as bad as smoking cigarettes. I had hoped that some of you would listen, but news has it no one is staying away from the death beds. Beach Bum Tanning has recently reported that business has continued as per usual since the news reports. Come on people! I knew I wasn’t going to put the places out of business, but there’s not even the slightest decrease in the number of individuals hitting the beds. I know we all like our color, but trust me I don’t think its worth the Melanoma.

In light of the recent reports about the dangers of tanning beds, a new mobile spray-tan company has arisen. Spray Tan Los Angeles is a company available 24 hours a day 365 days a year, and they come to you! Personally the whole spray tan thing makes me a bit nervous, the possibility of turning orange just doesn’t seem worth it to me. But if you’re into that sort of thing and you live in LA or Las Vegas, it seems pretty awesome!
