4. The reinvention of Carine Roitfeld Quele scandale! Did she get fired? Did she quit? Are she and Emmanuelle Alt no longer friends? The rumors have been buzzing around Carine Roitfeld since she officially exiting Vogue Paris in February -- and in the process creating a future supermodel in Saskia de Brauw --  after 10 landmark, nipple-bearing years. But through it all, Carine has been the picture of calm and chic, hiking up her pencil skirt and reinventing herself as a brilliant and in-demand stylist/the coolest bitch on the planet. Stay tuned for another reinvention when Carine launches a new magazine and starts life as a grandmother next year.

3. Kate Middleton's Alexander McQueen wedding dress The speculation was unbearable for what was the biggest and most well-kept secret in an age of superfluous information. Though an unsurprising but nevertheless brilliant choice, Sarah Burton's handiwork cemented the Duchess of Cambridge (née Kate Middleton) as not only a bona fide style icon but a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Burton proved she was the right person to carry on McQueen's brilliant legacy and take it to the next level.

Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty The most successful fashion exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's  history, Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty set records and inspired fashion lovers and neophytes alike. The exhibit proved so popular, in fact, the Met extended its run twice. Even then, there were still lines of people waiting hours to get into the museum, but for 661,509 people it was well-worth the wait.

John Galliano stars in Gallianogate John Galliano's downfall has loomed large all year, particularly since Christian Dior has yet to announce his replacement, despite a neverending back-and-forth with a stubborn Marc Jacobs. Following a stint in rehab, a guilty conviction in Paris for making anti-Semitic remarks, and the general destruction of his reputation, Galliano at least had one bright spot this year: designing good friend Kate Moss' wedding dress. Galliano's dismissal also raised questions about the stress designers are under to deliver  multiple collections a year -- just ask Balmain's Christophe Decarnin. Everyone's still waiting to see who Dior picks to take the throne and if Galliano can make a comeback after such a devastating fall. As 2011 comes to a close, 2012 has the promise of even more scandals, breakdowns and breakthroughs that we cannot wait to cover obsessively for you. Jones surprised at the popularity cum hysteria of the Missoni Target collaboration, expressed hopes of scoring one of those bikes for himself.

Meanwhile, Iman turned over the reins to Rachel Zoe for dress duties — “She does Seventies ease well, which was really my generation” – and piled on some Fred Leighton jewels for the occasion. Greeting Ottavio, in Italian no less, the icon remarked, “I modeled in a lot of Missoni shows back in the day, so we know each other well.” Of course they do.

Wu’s diffusion line will not be as massive as the Missoni juggernaut, which featured some 400 pieces including clothes, home furnishings and — why not — a bike. Rather, Wu’s collaboration  is part of Target’s Go International program and will consist of only apparel and accessories, in the similar vein of past Go International designers Rodarte, Zac Posen and Thakoon.

For his part, Wu seemed to really enjoy teaming up with the mass retailer:

“The exciting thing about this limited edition collection of affordable women’s wear and accessories is that it allows me to reach a wider audience and bring my designs to people who may not have been able to purchase them before. My collection for Target is chic and wearable. I think women everywhere will enjoy it.”

A heaping helping of shade was thrown all over the interwebs from disgruntled customers wanting to get their clutches on the one-off collection with many blaming Target’slack of preparation for the feverish rush. The line was made available at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and by 7:47 am the homepage was down. Thirteen minutes later, Target put up a courtesy page claiming the problem was being worked on.

Though Target switched from Amazon.com‘s backend to their own platform, the #fail was mostly attributed to the Missoni fever built up over the last few months. Vogue featured  the line in its August issue — with New York Times writer Stephanie Clifford astutely pointing out that that was “perhaps the first and last time that a $30 rug made it into that magazine” — and items at the Missoni for Target pop-up shop sold out in six hours during Fashion’s Night Out. Even alleged celebrities like the Jessicas Simpson and Alba were coveting the pieces.

While the collection will last through October 22nd, over 6,000 items popped up on eBay just some 11 hours after they had initially gone on sale. While all this hubbub and hullabaloo is great for Missoni, Target’s kind of getting its ass handed to them, with words like “amateurish” and “embarrassing” being bandied about. Of course, Target will recover and hopefully learn its lesson and hopefully the masses’ unprecedented demand for discount Missoni will inevitably be satiated. [NYT]

Famous for its diffusion lines with Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen and most recently Missoni, Target gained considerable clout with the fashion set. However, clothing and home goods sales — which are more profitable and make up more than 40% of annual sales –  are sluggish.

And why is that? Poor people, of course.

When Target started adding more groceries and introduced a 5% discount to all customers who used their credit and debit cards, they attracted “more medium- and low-income shoppers at the expense of the higher-end shopper.”

Because who wants to pick up their Rodarte for Target discount couture next to a mom with a cart full of diapers and screaming kids? No one, that’s who.

So with other department stores picking up on their high-end designer collabo brilliance,  Target is quickly and unfortunately approaching Wal-Mart levels of cool. [WSJ]

A recent survey of the wealthy shows that their spending habits have changed post-recession with more emphasis on discounts, less trust in branding and more caution in discretionary spending. As a result, Costco and Target are the favorite shopping destinations of the wealthiest Americans, a little tidbit I’m filing under my continuing “Coming Signs of the Apocalypse” scrapbook.

The American Affluence Research Center a.) is a real thing and b.) found that 60% of people said discounts didn’t affect their opinions of a brand. And although well-to-do Americans now think twice about making it rain at the cashier they will stay pay full price on “one-of-a-kind clothes and accessories” as well as “experiences that create fond memories” such as weekend getaways, vacations and I’m assuming high-class call girls.

It’s always sad when the rich have to cut back on their number of homes or size of their yachts — I mean, who else can us po’ folk aspire to and/or steal from? [WSJ]

McArthur Joseph: What is it about water that inspired Joseph Abboud’s Spring collection?

Bernardo Rojo: We wanted the collection and its fabrics to be fresh and fluid, like water. The garment washes, dyes, prints and even colors in the collection were all influenced by this element, which is the earth’s most influential one.

Joseph: In the collection, there are many printed details. Where did the inspiration for that come from?

Rojo: There are certain patterns that have been inherited from Joseph Abboud, namely herringbone and paisley. We selected patterns that Joseph used and then we introduced color. Paisley reminds you of a watermark, further bolstering the theme of water. You will always see this pattern in Joseph Abboud garments.

Joseph: How would you say the Spring collection looks in comparison to past Joseph Abboud collections?

Rojo: The change was in the silhouettes and the fabrics that we used. We tried to alter the tailoring from the way it was perceived in the past. I wanted to keep our current customer base and educate them in where fashion is heading. This spring we did the biggest step yet.

Joseph: Who do you think the Joseph Abboud man is?

Rojo: Every man can wear Joseph Abboud. It’s a man who is sophisticated and wants to be stylish and comfortable. He can be from anywhere, New York, London, Paris, Milan, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. I view him as an “international man.” We have older customers in their 60s who want to look current but don’t want to be too daring fashion-wise. We also have young men who are taken by surprise and say “Wow, there are so many changes to Joseph Abboud. This is not what my father would wear.” There are elements that everyone can wear. It is about how they put clothes together, not individual pieces.

Joseph: You are very stylish. Do you think your personal style has influenced the new look of Joseph Abboud?

Rojo: It is inevitable that my style influences the collections, but I try to focus on what the brand is all about. I try to bring the line up-to-date, but I have to keep the client in mind.

Joseph: What trends are you excited to see in menswear this Spring?

Rojo: It’s all about soft tailoring for Spring. Colors are also very important, but we tone them down. Colors last Spring were very bright, but now we’re seeing colors in softer shades for men.

Joseph: What would you say your favorite garments in this collection are?

Rojo: I love the pale lavender suit. We also did a Seattle jacket made from wool-nylon that is of rain-wear quality. You can wear it on those Spring days when there is light rain and not have to wear a rain coat. You can still wear it in the office. There is also the element of knitted jackets. I show them in the lookbook with swimwear. Sometimes when you’re vacationing somewhere warm, it can still get chilly at night; instead of a sweater, you can just throw on these jackets over your shirt to get a casual and fashionable look.

Joseph: How do you see the Joseph Abboud line evolving in the future?

Rojo: Right now, the line is right where we want it to be. Though we are constantly evolving, the look for the international man is pretty much set. We are a contemporary brand that is not about fashion, but about style. The line crosses barriers. It will always be about timeless pieces that you can wear through the seasons.

On August 10, Poketo will launch a distinctive back-to-school and fall line featuring totes, messenger bags, laptop cases, umbrellas, wallets, shopping bags, and more. The collection will be available at Target, with Macy’s to follow in the winter.

Well, Target (pronounced Tar-zhay) has done it again with another designer knockout collabo. This time La Dolce Vita has turned out three and a possible fourth style for the massive chain and will be available at the recently opened East Harlem location, with other stores to follow on August 22nd. prices range from $29.99 to $34.99, right around my favorite bracket. Now, if they only make any of these in a size 12, preferably a 12W for these damned man feet, I’ll be golden.

So my quest for finding a pair of brown wedges finally ended yesterday. I had fallen in love with the brown wedges from the Cynthia Vincent for Target line, but unfortunately they were completely gone by the second day. I made a couple of calls to Target stores (okay…make that MANY calls for a couple of weeks) trying to see if they would get a new shipment, but no luck. I finally gave up, but still was on the hunt for finding a pair of brown wedges.

I first saw these flat espadrilles on Marissa and was pleasantly surprised to hear she bought hers at Target! A few weeks later I saw them in Madewell and fell in love all over again. Blue and white stripes have become a favorite of mine this summer and I can picture myself wearing these with bermuda shorts and racerback tanks on lazy weekend days. Normally $48 wouldn’t seem too pricey for a pair of shoes, but after knowing the Target pair cost $16.99 I couldn’t help being partial to the cheaper pair. What do you think of flat espadrilles? This should allow you to move the rest of your furniture to fit the new location of your bed. I recently wrote about Old Navy in my “Top 5 Places To Shop This Summer” because it is one of my absolute favorite place to shop for basics. THey offer classic and timeless pieces without taking a chunk of your wallet.

2. American Apparel

American Apparel is a great place to go for basics because they specialize in them. You can also can basics in a variety of colors and styles  that you probably would not be able to get anywhere else.

3. Target

This store is probably the one you can get most bang for your buck. They are located everywhere so there is no need to fret over if there or isn’t there one nearby. One of the most memorable thing I got from there was a pair of brown shorts about 2 years ago that no matter what I wear it with I look like a lot more that the 10 bucks I actually spent.

4. Uniqlo

Now some of you people outside the New York area will be asking what the hell is a Uniqlo? Well I’ll tell you that it is an amazing shop located in Soho. If you are ever in downtown NYC, this is the place to go for great basics.

The first plus-sized winner of “America’s Next Top Model”, Whitney Thompson is already proving she’s got more model potential than many of the shows thinner winners. She’s just booked this Target ad campaign for their new collection, ‘Pure Energy’. More catalog than print ready, the images are a refreshing dose of real women who shop the retailer.
