In classical dance, you begin ballet classes with the dream of someday advancing to en pointe, also known as the style of ballet where you wear extra uncomfortable shoes with plaster toes that do terrible things to your feet while making you look unspeakably elegant. It makes a kind of sense, then, that this would translate well to the fashion world; we started off with the tame ballet flat, modeled upon the ballet slipper, but now certain designers are designing footware that bear an increasingly strong resemblance to pointe shoes (and this is to say nothing of ankle-ribbons). Take note of the super blunt, squared-off toes (though I’d imagine they are less painful than the dance version):
