The fine women you see below jamming on their American opus Shiny Gun are the band Open Ocean. All with southern roots and Brooklyn homes, they also all happen to be independent jewelry designers. Let me introduce to you: Dirty Librarian Chains on the keys, SFK on guitar and main vocals, Cheek-ie on drums. Basil Whatley grooves on bass and is also from the south, but does not make jewelry, and thus not in the shot. Though he is a badass graphic designer. I crashed their rehearsal the other night at Sound City in Williamsburg, and caught a short vid of the waves of cool funk and post-punk disco rising in the intimate practice space. Pardon any rockiness, it was making my body bounce.

Experience the sounds of the Open Ocean at Glasslands in Williamsburg on Thursday, 3/22.

And rock their chains up ahead.

She rescues her materials from shuttered factories and morphs them into layers of jewelry. Like this one made out of an old chandelier. And a guitar strap that's also a belt. Bam.

Sarah Frances Kuhn, the front lady of Open Ocean, tricks out cameras on the side. The former Accessories Director of Teen Vogue is tricking out the cameras of street style bloggers like Tommy Ton, The Facehunter and The Hanneli.

In fact, all of her accessories are made from fabric over fluffy cotton. Light yet thick. That's

Some gals got it and some gals would sell their first born just to get it — that “je ne sais quoi”, that “It” factor that makes men want them, women want to be them, and magazine editors want to put them on their covers. But even with that hard-to-categorize quality, the magic can fall short. Some gals can sell a magazine and some gals should stick to their day jobs, starring in movies, recording dance-pop hits and whoring their lives out on basic cable. Assembled here are the biggest winners and losers of the Great Magazine Cover War of 2011.

Link Love: WWD

Winner: Sarah Jessica Parker

Her January Elle, August Vogue, and September Marie Claire covers are the 2nd or 3rd bestsellers of each mag this year.

Loser: Justin Bieber

His Vanity Fair cover is the lowest selling issue since Graydon Carter took over in 1992. Rolling Stone, Teen Vogue and People similarly bombed.

Winner: Lady Gaga

Mother Monster's Vogue cover was Anna Wintour's second best-selling issue, while her March Harper's Bazaar is Glenda Bailey's third top performer.

Loser: Lady Gaga

However, no one wants to see a pared-down, bare-faced Gaga and the October issue of Bazaar is its third worst performer.

Winner: Mila Kunis

A breakout year for the actress delivered GQ's biggest-selling issue from August and a 15% increase for a struggling W with her March cover. A turn on Cosmopolitan and a shared cover with Justin Timberlake on Elle in August also proved to be hits.

Loser: Justin Timberlake

JT's cover with Mila might have been a hit for Elle, but his W cover with Amanda Seyfried was the mag's 2nd worst seller, while his solo cover for Esquire in October was its worst seller of the year.

Winner: Jennifer Aniston

Alleged sexiest woman of all time, Aniston was also Marie Claire's top seller of the year and her November Elle is on track to be one of its biggest hits.

Loser: Michelle Williams

The My Week with Marilyn star's Vogue cover and her Marie Claire cover were each mag's second and third worst-performing covers, respectively.

Winner: Kim Kardashian

Kim delivered Glamour's bestseller of the year with her February cover, but a lot happened between then and now...

Loser: The Kardashians

While Kim's Harper's Bazaar, Self and Lucky covers were mild hits, the January 2012 issue of Glamour featuring sisters Khloe and Kourtney is on track to bomb Bieber-style.

Style.com will launch a physical publication come the end of October — right after the last model has tripped off the catwalk of Paris Fashion Week – and in addition, they’ll be “dipping a toe” into e-commerce.

Photo: Style.com

The magazine — ingeniously title Style.com Magazine – will be “very much focused on Spring/Summer 2012 collections,” says editor-in-chief Dirk Standen. “We are going to spotlight the most interesting people, places and clothes of the season, but beyond that we are hoping to convey to the reader what the experience of going through that intense four week cycle is like.”

Nylon Magazine and Teen Vogue‘s Lina Kutsovskaya has been hired as creative director for the mag, which will also include insightful commentary from regular contributors Tim Blanks and Nicole Phelps, as well as from freelancers — in particular, young photographers.

Coinciding with the launch of their new pub, Style.com will also dabble in e-commerce with “Instant Gratification.” As Standen explains it:

“We are working with 6 New York City designers to be announced during fashion week. They are going to make a very limited number of pieces available directly from their Spring collection, so that people will be able to buy them right away. We are going to coordinate it with the launch of the magazine so, technically end of October. They will be able to buy it and will receive a nice package in the mail within days.”

Launching not only a magazine but an e-commerce business is a bold move on Style.com‘s part, but with the roster of talent at their fingertips and the rather brilliant “Instant Gratification” model, Standen and co. stand a good chance of making it.

Are you excited for Style.com Magazine‘s first issue this fall? [Business of Fashion]

And for updates on the launch, you can follow Style.com on Twitter.

Anna Wintour has been credited/blamed/lauded/criticized for the current proliferation of celebrity-driven magazine covers of the past 15 years or so. Love it or hate it, a model has a better chance winning a Pulitzer than landing a U.S. Vogue cover — with a few notable exceptions. While stars are rightfully and contractually beautiful, however, not all of them can cut the couture mustard. Then there are those ladies who love the camera and the camera is kind of obsessed with them. Here, the 10 actresses who give the best editorial — and give models a run for their money — are given the countdown treatment.

One of the most striking women in film, on the red carpet and in fashion spreads, look no further for Swinton’s editorial excellence than this month’s W.

His Tiger Beat-esque Vanity Fair cover is the worst(-selling) issue of VF in 12 years and his covers for People and Teen Vogue performed well below their averages. Has a cure finally been found for the dreaded Bieber Fever?
Just look at those little punims! Ugh, I’m nauseous. Not gonna lie to ya, I’ve never liked kids. Even when I was a kid, I didn’t much care for them. What, you have to run around screaming and laughing all the time? What’s wrong with sitting down and quietly paging through a Vogue? However, with Lanvin‘s irressitibly cute new children’s line and this mini-Benetton-esque ad for H&M‘s All for Children collection, my icy heart is beginning to melt. Slowly.

I mean, look at that little afro? And the little boy turning it on the left.Ten years from now, throw all of these damn kids on the runway and call it a fashion show. H&M lined up these diaper darlings for their All for Children initiative with UNICEF. These clothes go on sale in 160 H&M stores worldwide, with 25% of sales benefiting UNICEF projects to promote children’s rights to education and protection in vulnerable communities.

The clothes are adorable, particularly that orange number on the right worn by a young Karlie Kloss. But they have nothing on the Lanvin Petite clothes.

Apparently Lanvin doesn’t believe in child labor laws because these kids are at work.

Popping out of a box?! Pensively sitting in a chair?! Braced against a wall in a trench?! These kids are editorial jumping at a Teen Vogue level.

After looking at these pics, I’m tempted to adopt a child and raise her to be the next supermodel of the world. But then I realized that they don’t stay this cute forever. One day they’re crawling in their baby heels and the next they’re flashing their crotch and getting high on salvia.

Without even inviting you.
GUESS and Teen Vogue have recently come together to launch a Chari-T Design Contest where one lucky winner’s design will be produced by GUESS and all proceeds will go to benefit the charity of the winning designers choosing.

Starting today the two are encouraging readers to flex their artistic muscle with a contest to design a T-shirt to benefit a charity of their choosing.

Paul Marciano, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GUESS? Inc. has said “By entering into this promotion with Teen Vogue we hope to give other teenagers the opportunity to change the world we live in for the better.”

The online contest will run from March 15th through May 20th at Teenvogueallaccess.com/chari-t. A judging panel made up of Teen Vogue editors, GUESS executives and Ella Marciano, will select five finalists, whose designs will be presented in social and digital platforms for peer voting.

The winning design will be turned into a T-shirt and announced in August with an in-store event just in time for back-to-school shopping. The winning T-shirt design will be sold online at www.GUESS.com with 100% of proceeds benefiting the selected charity. In addition, the Chari-T will be featured at the Teen Vogue Haute Spot, a pop up shop for the magazine in New York this September, and will also be the official T-shirt for Teen Vogue’s annual Fashion University in October.

Rachel Zoe may be seven months pregnant, but her real labor of love is her new collection, which she showed on Tuesday morning. Zoe is already generating controversy, however, with a dress that looks suspiciously similar to one she styled in the pages of Teen Vogue way back in 2007.

Zoe apparently intended to keep the collection under wraps by confiscating all cell phones “à la Tom Ford,” but Harper’s Bazaar took a giant crap on that plan when they tweeted this photo:

Note the white shift at front, as we’ll come back to that later.

Speaking to WWD, Rachel dropped the gender of her baby, which she was also keeping secret (she’s having a boy) and discussed her line.

Zoe collaborated with Li & Fung for her collection of tailored suits, sequined cardigans (!), organza party dresses, suede boots, leather-trimmed capes (!!), platform pumps in matte croc and even a le smoking jumpsuit (!!!) which will be priced from $250 to $700.

Meanwhile, I die. I’m dying. I’m dead.

Rachel hopes the collection will be sold next to Diane von Furstenberg, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, though no retailers have been confirmed yet. But Li & Fung’s chief strategy officer, Alan Chartash, has confidence in Zoe:

“I think there’s going to be a price balance. We felt that [contemporary] is her audience. She’s already done something affordable for QVC.”

Well if QVC is on board….Now back to that dress.

Jane Keltner de Valle, fashion news director at Teen Vogue, tweeted this pic (Twitter is clearly the bane of Rachel Zoe’s existence) of a vintage dress Zoe styled in an October 2007 issue of the mag which is basically a straight-up knockoff:

Well, if it ain’t broke…

Zoe’s collection sounds (and looks) great, but do you think this bit of counterfeit will negatively impact her line?

And for more Zoe, head on over to Lookbooks for a gallery of some of her upcoming pieces!

Link Love: WWD/NY Mag

Now that awards season has descended upon us all like a blizzard of sequins and tulle, the nation’s red carpets will be crowded with starlets jockeying for attention. Some of them will be there with acceptance speeches in tow, and others will just be happy to be nominated. Then there are those so-called actresses who barely go to the movies let alone star in them, yet are there because they love wearing gowns, heels and chandelier earrings. Their presence is not offensive, rather, they are often among the best dressed…but I defy you to name one movie you’ve seen them in within the last year.

1. Kate Bosworth – She’s a red carpet staple, but if you tell me Kate’s been in anything since 2002′s Blue Crush I’ll laugh in your face. You could argue that she was Superman Returns but Lois Lane disappears from view as soon as she turns sideways.

IMDb says: The Warrior’s Way (2010), A warrior-assassin (yes, Kate) is forced to hide in a small town in the American Badlands after refusing a mission.

2. Camilla Belle – She of the strong brow and even stronger fashion instincts, Camilla was in 2006′s When a Stranger Calls, but she could easily have been the stranger as I had never seen her before (or since) then.

IMDb says: From Prada to Nada (2011), A Latin spin on Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility, due out at the end of the month. Keep ringing, Belle.

3. Kerry Washington – Stunning Washington has been in critically-acclaimed fare such as Ray, The Last King of Scotland and Save the Last Dance (speaking of which, the last thing I saw Julia Stiles in was a commercial touting her as an original; I must have been mistaken), but if you add up her screen time from all of her films, she’s easily logged more exposure strolling the red carpet.

IMDb says: For Colored Girls (2010), Kerry is one of 10 women striving to survive through Tyler Perry‘s muddled direction and clunky adaptation of the Tony-winning play.

4. Vanessa Hudgens - Hudgens recently completed her most challenging role to date as Zac Efron‘s “girlfriend,” a part in which she was never truly convincing. Though known for not wearing clothes, she’s still one of Teen Vogue‘s Best Dressed Celebs of 2010.

IMDb says: Bandslam (2009) also known as High School Musical 12: Our Careers are in Freefall.

5. Rachel Bilson – Ever since The O.C. ended, Bilson has emerged as a style icon for young girls who see her engaging performances every week in the pages of Us Weekly and In Touch.

IMDb says: Bilson will star in rom com Waiting for Forever out in February — just in time for me to slit my wrists on Valentine’s Day!

6. Emma Roberts – The extent of my knowledge regarding Emma Roberts: she’s Julia Roberts‘ niece. Oh, and she’s Eric Roberts‘ daughter. Though she’s making a name for herself as a legitimate actress, for now her last name and her emerging glamor are her only defining characteristics.

IMDb says: It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) I’ve actually heard good things about this dramedy about a clinically depressed teenager in an adult psych ward, but I, like everyone, haven’t seen it.

7. Demi Moore – Despite not having been in a movie since husband Ashton Kutcher was in diapers (and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle doesn’t count so don’t even try it), stylist Rachel Zoe is always on the verge of a heart attack clamoring to dress her. For what, the supermarket? Demi always looks great, but a movie star of her stature should have at least one more good movie in her.

IMDb says: Bunraku (2010) And this is not it. Demi co-stars with Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson in a drama/fantasy about a drifter who blah-blah-blah, who cares? Striptease 2: From the Stripper Pole to the Nursing Home!

All you ever hear about is Kim, Kourtney and Khloe, but younger sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner have a look that is young and fresh. The sisters did a fashion shoot and interview for the February 2011 issue of Teen Vogue, and they are darling.

Here is a preview of the Jenner sisters’ Teen Vogue interview:

Teen Vogue: Keeping Up with the Kardashians debuted in 2007. What was your initial reaction to having your lives filmed?

Kendall: I’ve always been a shy person, so all the attention around my family was weird in the beginning. But we’ve come out of our shells, and now it’s cool for people to see how we’ve grown.

Kylie: It’s our lifestyle now—it’s just normal.

Teen Vogue: Is your family accurately portrayed on the show?

Kendall: That’s literally us. We wake up in the morning, and the cameras are there. We go to sleep at night, and they’re still right there. It’s reality. We don’t have scripts.

Teen Vogue: Any moments you wish hadn’t been caught on camera?

Kendall: I’ve looked back at episodes from the first season where I’m wearing some of the craziest stuff—like green jeans. I don’t know what I was thinking!

Lea Michele (#5), Kristin Stewart (#7) Taylor Swift (#8) and Olivia Palermo (#9) somehow all made the top 10. I know this is Teen Vogue, but let’s raise the bar a little and maybe swap ‘em out for Emma Watson (#16), Keira Knightley (#20), Chloë Sevigny (#18) and Freida Pinto (#21).

Though I will say that I am glad that Kelly Osborune (#25) made the list. She’s really come into her own style, plus I love her with Joan Rivers on E!’s Fashion Police. If only they would get rid of that damned orange skeleton, Giuliana Rancic.

Meanwhile, three out of four Gossip Girls made the top 50: Leighton Meester (#19) and Jessica Szohr (#32), however (non-teen) Vogue‘s Best Dressed cover girl Blake Lively has to settle for #23. Anna‘s other Angels, Anne Hathaway (#49) and Sienna Miler (who is apparently still considered a celebrity) bring up the rear.

Take a gander at the full list:

1. Alexa Chung

2. Emma Roberts

3. Carey Mulligan

4. Kate Bosworth

5. Lea Michele

6. Camilla Belle

7. Kristin Stewart

8. Taylor Swift

9. Olivia Palermo

10. Rachel Bilson

11. Natalie Portman

12. Victoria Justice

13. Whitney Port

14. Miranda Cosgrove

15. Nicola Peltz

16. Emma Watson

17. Amanda Seyfried

18. Chloë Sevigny

19. Leighton Meester

20. Keira Knightly

21. Freida Pinto

22. Anna Kendrick

23. Blake Lively

24. Shenae Grimes

25. Kelly Osbourne

26. Elle Fanning

27. Emma Stone

28. Selena Gomez

29. Florence Welch

30. Lauren Conrad

31. Dree Hemingway

32. Jessica Szohr

33. America Ferrera

34. Gillian Zinser

35. Katy Perry

36. Agyness Deyn

37. Mila Kunis

38. Nina Dobrev

39. Lily Collins

40. Rihanna

41. Maghertia Missoni

42. Vanessa Hudgens

43. Keke Palmer

44. Sarah Hyland

45. Mia Wasikowska

46. Lucy Hale

47. Jessica Stroup

48. Amber Riley

49. Anne Hathaway

50. Sienna Miller

Any glaring omissions? Any confusing selections? Any one know who Katy Perry had to sleep with to make this list?

At another studio across town, Indira Cesarine shot Dominique and Olga for Cosmopolitan. I am so jealous because Sally Hershberger did their hair. With summer coming up my hair is turning into a frizz ball and I need some serious help. I think I’ll just call up my friends at Mark Garrison and get a clear gloss. Raquel does my hair and she is da shiz.

When I was in eighth or ninth grade, I read Teen Vogue (and regular Vogue, Elle, W, Cosmo…). I’ve always been a magazine lover, and the reason why I adored Teen Vogue way back when was because they’d show stylish teens’ rooms (usually those lucky enough to have a model or fashion editor as a mom) and decorating tips. So it’s only natural for the pint-sized mag to launch a bedding and room decor line.

According to the magazine’s editors, as referenced in an article posted on WWDMedia.com, the line will be in the $250-and-under price range and reflect current fashion trends.

“Teen Vogue chose bedding as a first foray into licensing because to a young woman, her room is a direct reflection of her personal style: much like fashion,” said vice president and publisher Laura McEwen. “We realized that in selecting fabrics, colors and patterns, Teen Vogue was in a unique position to develop bedding that was based on fashion trends.”

It should add some spice to your space, even if you’re not a pre-teen.

Read more of the article HERE

Mark Indelicato has landed his dream job! He is going to be interning at Teen Vogue this spring, when the finale season of Ugly Betty is done filming. The teen star—who plays Ana Ortiz’s fashion obsessed son on the ABC show—is a real life style maven with a passion for fashion.

Rumor has it that the move to Teen Vogue may also give him his next big break in television, there is a possibility that his internship experience will be turned into a reality TV show. “I want to have a reality show about it.” Indelicato confirmed. “My boss said he’s determined to make me cry. He said it makes good TV,” he dished to In Touch Weekly at Joonbug.com’s Style 360 Kick Off party.

Indelicato, 15, is currently studying at the prestigious Professional Performing Arts School in New York City and although he admits he will miss his costars when Ugly Betty wraps, he is looking forward to the future. “I think we’ll all go to bigger and better things, and it’ll be perfect — everything is going to be fabulous!”

(Latina magazine)

First I would like to start by saying, that I hate the fact that “Ugly Betty” is nearing it’s end. I can think of other shows that have definitely run their course and should be eliminated, but this is not one of them. The entire cast is great……my hope is that all will be successful in finding other pursuits.

Mark, who is one of my favorites from the cast, recently appeared on The Wendy Williams show and spoke about his being home schooled up to this point and that his first “big purchase” was a Louis Vuitton duffle bag. His all to brief interview was funny and memorable. I’m sure that we haven’t seen or heard the last of him…..who know, he could have a new career on the horizon.

She’s filled with all these cute little faces and quirks. I can only imagine that she’d be fun to hang out with. So Vanessa no, Jessica yes, indies.

Anyways here’s some behind the scenes video of the girl from a recent Teen Vogue cover shoot. My guess is their mission to get everyone from that show on their cover is nearly complete. Expect Doroda to hit the cover in March.

No surprises on this list of the most searched celebrities from Teen Vogue. Apparently Team Jacob was going strong cause Taylor Lautner had more searches than Robert Pattinson.

20. Alexa Chung – This year it was very “On” for Alexa Chung. Next year she probably won’t hit this list considering the cancellation of her MTV show.

19. Dakota Fanning – Love everything this girl does and I’m shocked she’s not a bit higher up on the list.

18. Ed Westwick -The ultimate poster child of “heavage” and Gossip Girl star makes the list. Surprisingly Blake Lively doesn’t.

17. Chanel Iman – The model of our generation. I’m expecting massive things from this girl in the new year.

16. Demi Lovato – I am proud to state I have no idea who the fuck this is…

15. Jonas Brothers – I am sad to state that I know exactly who these guys are.

14. Emma Roberts - I’ve never actually cared to see anything she’s been in, but I’m sure she’s only going to get bigger and bigger with time.

13. Zac Efron – With his latest feature a total fail and no High School Musicals in sight, I’m hoping we’re finally over this dude.

12. Leighton Meester – No surprise. With a record and Gossip Girl, she was bound to make this list.

11. Taylor Swift – Good job Taylor. You once again have beaten Beyonce.

10. Vanessa Hudgens – WTF?!? How did she beat her boyfriend and T-Swift?!!

9. Whitney Port – I’m thinking she’s only been searched a lot because people had no idea who she is.

8. Miley Cyrus – It’s a party in the USA.

7. Taylor Momsen – Looking more and more like Courtney Love everyday.

6. Robert Pattinson – Goddamn Twilight.

5. Selena Gomez – Yeah, hispanicals!!!

4. Lauren Conrad – Um, wow. Really?

3. Taylor Lautner – Shark Boy beats the Vampire!!!

2. Emma Watson – The highest grossing actress of our time!!!

1. Kristen Stewart – I think this just made Corey’s Day.

May be sick of me talking about Taylor Momsen today, but we all love her here, and Teen Vogue is putting her all over the place (including in our RAW feed). Here’s her interview for the September mag, Corey was very excited to hear that she only dates older guys.

–

TEEN VOGUE: You seemed totally at home in front of that crowd the other night—is it true that, until recently, you’d never played a live show?

TAYLOR MOMSEN: The only other time I’ve been on a stage was when I starred as the Little Red Hen in the second grade. But my family used to play music and dance around in the basement every Saturday night. My sister and I even formed a band called Pink Boa—we’d put on tutus and masks, and I’d sing and play guitar and she’d play the drums. We knew two songs, “Seven Nation Army” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

TV: And you’ve been acting professionally for over a decade—that probably helps.

TM: Yeah, I kind of grew up in front of the camera: I started modeling when I was two. I was never pushed into it, but I never really chose it either. That’s why music is so different for me—I’ve known since I was little that this is what I want to do.

TV: Does that mean you’re finished with acting after Gossip Girl?

TM: It would be crazy to cut it out completely. And I love being on the show—I hope it goes on for a couple more years. But as for the future, I don’t know. I’m at a point now where I’m not doing anything just for money or fame.

TV: You recorded most of your album before signing a deal with your label, Interscope, whereas many famous actresses work the other way around. Was it important to you to do as much as possible yourself?

TM: The most obvious thing is to look at me and say, “Oh, pretty blonde girl, let’s put her in pop.” But I would never want to do something in music that isn’t representing me—I’d feel like I was faking myself. I wanted to have it all done so I could say, “Here’s who I am, either you like it or you don’t.”

TV: Tell us about your song writing process.

TM: I start with an idea, an emotion, and I write whatever comes into my mind. My lyrics are my diary—you’re hearing every detail of my life. I’m still learning guitar, so I have a writing partner who helps me: I know what I want to do, but I can’t physically do it, so it’s good to have someone there who can interpret. I’d call my music rock, but with pop hooks. I grew up listening to the Beatles, Blondie, and Joan Jett, and I love Nirvana.

TV: You recently finished high school, more than two years early. Were you just eager to get it over with?

TM: I found it kind of boring. I’m an artist; I’m not going to use trigonometry. Now I’m taking college classes online—I want to major in Language Arts.

TV: Do you have any interest in doing the regular college thing? Enrolling at a university, living in a dorm…

TM: For most people, college is a place where you learn about yourself, and I feel like I’m doing that already. I’m already independent.

TV: People also make great friends there.

TM: I have such trust complexes. I’m close to like two people.

TV: Is that a side effect of fame?

TM: I’ve always been like that. People misinterpret what I say all the time: They think I’m being offensive, when really, I’m only being opinionated. Most of my friends are older, too. I live a very adult life: I have two different careers; I’m on tour. What am I going to do, hang out with the high school kids? I just can’t relate to what they talk about—it seems so petty.

TV: Are your parents comfortable with your maturity?

TM: They have to be; it’s not going anywhere. But I’m responsible. I’m not one of those crazy teens. They trust me.

TV: Do they trust you with older boyfriends?

TM: I’m not dating anyone right now, but I’ve had lots of relationships. My parents know that I’m not going to date someone who’s sixteen. Boys are so much less mature than girls as it is; there’s just no way— I would eat a boy my age alive.

TV: You were a finalist for the part of Hannah Montana—are you ever relieved that you didn’t get that role?

TM: I think it’s a great opportunity for Miley, but yeah, I guess I am relieved. If I had gotten the part, it would be a very different show. It wouldn’t have worked for me. I push back.

TV: It’s hard to imagine you being totally happy at Disney.

TM: When I was nine, it seemed amazing. But I wouldn’t have been able to deal with not writing my own songs. I don’t want to lose the artistry—a lot of people in music right now are faces—manufactured. I don’t want to be that.

TV: And you’ve adopted a very rock ‘n’ roll look.

TM: I had long, pretty hair, and it didn’t fit me. I’m pretty, but I’m not, like, a “pretty girl.” So I pulled up a bunch of photos of Joan Jett and said, “Do that to my hair.” There was a distinct change in my wardrobe, too, and I know people were a little, um, taken aback. But it wasn’t me that changed—it was just that I decided to start being myself. Now I do my own makeup, my own hair, and dress myself, and it feels better.

TV: So this isn’t just another part? You’re not acting when you’re up on that stage?

TM: No way. The role is me.

The 16-year-old Illinois-born, Missouri-raised American model started her career with her first Teen Vogue editorial in August 2007. The magazine loved her so much, they brought her back as a cover girl in February 2008 alongside Chanel Iman and Ali Michael.

How were you discovered?

Doing a charity fashion show in a mall in St. Louis for a friend who was battling cancer.

Has your ballet dance experience helped you on the catwalk or with your stamina?

Ballet has helped me express myself on photo shoots, and on the catwalk gives me the confidence to move with the fabrics.

Do you ever get embarrassed or uncomfortable with the nudity that modeling demands?

I am still 16 so my agency won’t allow me to do nudity of any sort.

To hear more from Karlie and to see more photos, read more.

What’s your most embarrassing modeling experience?

Tripping on the runway after closing the Pucci show in Milan.

How do you pass the time waiting around for the action to begin?

I just talk to my girlfriends, and of course BlackBerry my agent Stephen, and eat cookies in the corner with the girls.

Do you have model friends? If so, who?

Yes, I have lots. Jourdan Dunn is a close friend. I love Karmen Pedaru, and Catherine McNeil is cool to bake stuff with; they both live in my building. Abbey Lee is always cool to hang out with.

Favorite photo shoot destination?

I always wanted to shoot in Disney World. Probably shooting British Vogue with Patrick Demarchelier in an island off Sweden.

What are your Spring must haves?

White t-shirts, jeans, and whatever trade the designers will be throwing my way.

I can’t live without my_____.

Family, mom, dad, sisters, and puppy Joe.

It seems as if more and more photographers and designers are deciding to shoot bloggers or it-girls for recent campaigns. First Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast snagged the RCVA campaign. Then Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes joined the bandwagon with a Teen Vogue Spread. In early March, six fashion bloggers landed the Quiksilver Women fashion blog campaign. Now, there’s yet another to add to the mix: blogger Carolina Engman of Fashion Squad appears in the latest campaign for Norwegian brand Bik Bok. This editorial has me incredibly jealous of the carefree spirit and the sun. But models, you should be even more jealous…that’s four jobs, and counting, that social climbing bloggers have snagged. Watch your backs…or start a blog!

How did your role on House of Style come about?

Well basically, they called my agency, I went in to meet with them, I did an audition with all the rest of the girls, and they called — I was waiting for the phone call, I was hoping I got it — but I was waiting for about three months. And when I got back from Paris — I was in Paris for ready-to-wear and did the whole fashion tour for Fashion Week — they told me I got it. I was really excited because it’s just another way for me to express myself!

Tell me a little bit about your upcoming Gossip Girl appearance.

It’s just experience — it was just for me to get an idea of what it would be like to be on set, to really see what happens since I’ve never been on a set before.

Are you looking for more TV appearances in the future then?

Yeah. I’m kind of slowing down on the modeling right now and I’m branching out to other experiences and interests that I have. [Ed. note: She told Teen Vogue: "House of Style is definitely just the start. I want to do television, film, music and designing. I want to do it all!"]

The media thinks they are so slick with their little subliminal messages and indirect advertising schemes. But I smell some closed door deals involving the advertisement department of the Vogue corporation and the producers of Gossip Girl. If you’ve pay attention to Vogue and Teen Vogue lately, you’ll notice a common theme: Gossip Girl stars everywhere. With Blake Lively on the cover of Vogue’s February 2009 issue, Leighton Meester on the cover of Teen Vogue’s February 2009 issue and Ed Westwick’s feature in the Teen Vogue’s upcoming March 2009 issue, i’m starting to wonder if Vogue got paid for all of this advertising! This is no coincidence folks. Call it “giving the reader what they want,” but the first quarter of the new year is bringing Gossip Girl overload to magazine racks, and it’s fishy like a Monday morning at South Street Seaport.

It looks like Whitney Port is packing up her bikini and taking to the streets of New York with her new spinoff of The Hills produced by MTV. The City, despite the fact that it is a spinoff, looks pretty serious to me. Crying models, backstabbing boyfriends, jealous acquaintances and workplace scandals are just some of the things the teaser shows will go down in the Big Apple. NY Mag made a pretty solid prediction as to what is going to happen by the looks of the trailer. If they are correct, it looks like I can graduate from the overdramatic Gossip Girl and start laughing my butt off at the ridiculous drama and seditious characters of The City…as long as Lauren Conrad’s ugly dresses aren’t worn on screen…

We don’t have an exact date for the premier of this show, but MTV claims The City will air sometime in the spring. In the meantime, I would love to see Comedy Central do a spinoff of their own called The Mountains: Spencer dies in a freak snowmobile accident, leaving Heidi stranded alone in a desolate log cabin without internet for online shopping. Whitney begins designing winter coats but Lauren refuses to do her PR work because she is too busy designing hideous dresses of her own. Audrina quits work at Epic Records and begins work as a zamboni driver at the local ice-skating rink, leaving her too poor to afford rent with Lauren. Then all the girls go on an epic journey to rescue Heidi but are killed in an avalanche. Now Heidi must fend for herself until the Teen Vogue comes to the rescue! Can she do it? Stay tuned.

Kristen Stewart graces the cover of the December 2008 issue of Teen Vogue. During her interview with Teen Vogue she was asked about her view on fashion, here’s what she said:

If I’m just chilling out, then people can see me any which way, but it’s different when you’re putting yourself together to do something professionally. You’re under a lot of scrutiny. It’s a bizarre thing, to me, to consider that what I wear or what I do with my hair, can affect my career… I’m not the type of person who has a million things in my closet to put together, so I’ve begun to work with a stylist and we’ve started to figure out what I like. Simple, classically pretty things; I love Chanel.

Who doesn’t love Chanel? Am I the only one who thinks she is really boring?

Thanks Just Jared

‘But merchandise won’t be for sale. Instead girls can stop by to relax, try on clothes, play with makeup, charge cell phones and iPods, and drink smoothies. Some Teen Vogue advertisers featuring wares in the space were asked to buy an extra ad page or two to participate. The magazine plans to open more pop-ups around prom
season and in August for back-to-school.’

So basically, little pre-teeners can feel like Lindsay Lohan for 15min and try on clothes and mess with makeup, at the same time be bambared with advertisments in order to convince their parents to buy them this crap for Christmas. Sounds like desperation!

Your friends include your pet hamster Squeaky and the lunch lady who serves you poorly prepared Sloppy Joes. Your ex-boyfriend dumped you so he could spend more time reading Anime and trading Pokemon cards. So, you want to start all over? Make a good impression? Well, wearing one of Lauren Conrad‘s dresses to your homecoming dance is certainly not the way to do it.

Come on Lauren, you grew up in Beverly Hills for Christ sake and you work for Teen Vogue! Haven’t the playground of the rich, famous and fabulous and the fashion industry taught you anything? No girl wants to be caught dead dancing in a hunter green ruched halter dress! And to make matters worse, all of these designs have been done before- the strapless tuxedo look, the single shoulder bow, the Greek inspired draping. It looks like you and Whitney Port could use a collection makeover…and how!

And please, save teenage girls the humiliation and NEVER start a prom dress collection.

If you grew up with Rodeo Drive in your backyard, interned two summers at Womenswear Daily and currently hold the position as fashion contributor at Teen Vogue, we would certainly hope that you have at least an ounce of style. Well Whitney Port, you might be “The Hills” glamour Barbie, but your clothing line is anything but glamourous and falls miles short of being impressive.

Port’s new cocktail and nightwear clothing line, Eve & A, was recently picked up by Kitson Boutique. But I guess I’m not the only one vomiting over Port’s poorly executed ruffle-neck dress or her hideously constructed, costume-like sequin dress. Port’s line is listed as Whitney Eve on the Kitson website…that isn’t even the name of her clothing line! Maybe Kitson is so embarrassed of their agreement to sell Port’s line that they changed the name so people couldn’t find it!

And just look at those gnarly prices! Who in their right mind, especially with the current economic situation, would drop $400-$500 for such crap? I suggest you take that money and invest in some Campbell’s Soup stock.. Honestly, what is going to make you feel safer? A delicious homemade bowl of chicken noodle soup or knowing that one of those monstrous garments could potentially attack you in your sleep?

Thanks NY Magazine!
