How did you get started in fashion? 

I grew up on New York City’s Upper West Side –not exactly the beach culture capital of the world! While getting my undergraduate degree in finance at Baruch College, I started working at Steven Alan. It’s there that I kind of fell into design, immersed in a fashion industry environment at a young age. I was so drawn to production that I balanced a full time job with a full course load. Eventually, the idea for Onia emerged and that’s when I struck out on my own.

How is Onia different than your run of the mill swim trunk?
Onia came from my own frustrating experience trying to find swimwear that was both functional and well-designed. The choices available in the market simply weren’t appealing or they literally fell apart. In creating Onia products we use unique fabrics, sourced from all over the world (Italy, Spain, England, etc.), to provide colors and patterns that are stylish but never garish. And all our hardware is custom made to endure a pounding in the surf.

CakeStylists can get you dressed perfectly for any profession or occasion. Then your stylist will hand-select four to six outfits just for you (paired with accessories of course), pack them up and ship them straight to your door. Each box is also accompanied by a video of your stylist explaining each look on a mannequin. Now I’ve been to my fair share of uppity Manhattan fundraisers and this is by far the most fun event of the benefit season.  The key?  It is run by an amazing group of 25 young people who are all uber passionate about helping this cause.  The event itself is the brainchild of friends that wanted to put their social lives to good use, and in two short years they have managed to pull in over $200,000 in proceeds for the Make A Wish Foundation. What made this different from any other charity event?  This group has concocted the perfect recipe for a killer bash:

1. Endless list of spirits sponsors & phenomenal food 

Perrier Jouet champagne, Patron tequila, Ultimat vodka, Pryat Rum, Corona & Sam Adams beer, Evian water, combined with a ridiculous amount of yummy Lavo appetizers put everyone in the best spirit to party and more importantly, shell out more cash for the #2 most important thing:

2. Killer prizes for an at-event raffle drawing and silent auction:

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Fashion Fund, created by the CFDA and Vogue to aid young and emerging designers, includes a mentorship program and a cash prize. Altuzarra took home $300,000 while runners-up Pamela Love of Pamela Love Jewelry and Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind walked away with $100,000 each.

David Armstrong

David Armstrong grew up outside Boston and traveled between his hometown and New York City when he studied at Cooper Union. After receiving his BFA at Tufts University in 1988, he moved to NYC permanently where he began work as a photographer. Starting out with black and white portraits, Armstrong began to experiment with landscapes and cityscapes in the nineties. Luckily, he also has a distinct and introspective eye for fashion – his editorials are moving and emotionally-charged.

Crazy! My head’s not even… It’s still in a cloud. It was a very special moment in my life.

You are such a phenomenal talent. How does it feel to be on the stage?
Always on a stage of any kind is a blessing. Because I get so much from the audience and hopefully I can give back. It’s awesome.

Loving this white pocketed number. Who are you wearing tonight?
Theory! I’m all over the map. From Diane Von Furstenberg to Theory. I go anywhere that’s simple and looks good on me. That’s where I go.

In the book’s introduction, Sally Singer, editor of T Magazine, is quick to point out that this is not your typical behind the curtains tome. That’s owed primarily to the fact that Julien Claessens is not a fashion photographer. In fact he admits that he doesn’t really understand fashion, but he understands his friend Olivier’s work.

So it’s no surprise that his photos aren’t perfectly-posed, editorial-ready snapshots, but abstract portraits that offer a glimpse into a world of extremes: extreme beauty, extreme bodies and an almost otherworldly charm. The star of these portraits, however, are still Theyskens minutely-crafted work.

Like malleable sculptures, Theyskens clothes wrap and drape themselves over the skeletal  frames of Lily Donaldson, Hilary Rhoda, Gemma Ward, Olga Sherer, Lara Stone, Tanya Dziahileva, Catherine McNeil and Sasha Pivovarova, lending a strength, elegance and sophistication otherwise at odds with their prepubescent fragility.

The Other Side of the Picture chronicles Theyskens career chronologically, ending before he began his newest phase at Theory, but Nina Ricci’s Fall/Winter ’09 collection is a fitting denouement, both for the book and for Theyskens time at the brand. That particular collection is the peak of Theyskens craft and a comforting reminder that talent like his shall and will not be wasted. Also, I’m still not over these tranny heels:

Julien Claessens, without understanding fashion, is able to completely grasp the work of Olivier Theyskens. As Claessens says about his friend’s work, “There’s something here that is part of my universe.” His clothes speak, live and breathe through Claessens’ photos because Theyskens intended them to speak, live and breathe on the women he dresses. Claessens and Theyskens simply speak the same language.

What owning this book says about you: You’re a serious-minded fashionista who admires Olivier’s dark aesthetic and/or his dark hotness.

What your dinner guests will say upon seeing this book on your coffee table: “Oh, wow, someone’s pretentious. And fabulous.”

How this book will make your fashion brain grow: Though you’re not likely to gain much in the way of knowledge from The Other Side of the Picture, you’re heart will swell at its beauty.

Gap is cutting 25% from the prices for all the clothes in its retail stores for customers who check in on Foursquare in connection with an event the chain is calling “The BlackMagic Event.” The Foursquare deal is only valid today, so you’d better grab your smartphone and head to the store soon if you want some cheaper-than-usual family clothes.

The same discount is available to Twitter and Facebook users, but Facebook users have to print out a coupon and Twitter users have to offer up a discount code at the cashier. If you go the Foursquare route, you just have to check in at the store, though we’re not sure how the cashier knows about it; maybe he or she has to look up your user name, or maybe you actually have to show them your phone?

The Foursquare/Fashion connection isn’t totally fresh; Ann Taylor offered 25% off to Foursquare mayors and 15% off to each customer on his or her fifth check-in. These deals are great for Foursquare, and the theory is that they’re great for retail stores because those Foursquare users’ friends would see that they’re checking in, giving the stores some exposure.

Foursquare has also started sending out stickers to businesses to remind customers to check in whenever they walk in the door.

After an all-star punk festival fell apart, the bands involved found themselves with some spare scratch and a landscape ripe for shootouts and standoffs.  The plot revolves around three hitmen/bank robbers who happen upon a small town populated by wild and wacky weirdos who they have to commingle with while they wait for the heat to die down.  Things, of course, go awry.  Honestly the plot is secondary though to the rollicking nature of the film, the setpieces, and total absurdity.

The film’s cast reads like a who’s who of the era’s punk and new wave scene.  There’s Joe Strummer, The Pogues, The Circle Jerks, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, and even soon-to-be indie film god Jim Jarmusch.  And as an extra added bonus they’re all playing dress up.  Oh and Courtney Love‘s there too.

And she’s dressed well, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise if you follow her new Tumblr.  Pink dress with white polka dots not unlike this offering from Leifsdottir.  She might want to close those legs though.  But the matching watermelon‘s a nice touch.

Concerning the guys, check out Dick Rude‘s pants.  They’re very reminiscent of pairs shown off by Vivienne Westwood on a regular basis, which only seems fitting considering her place as the godmother of punk fashion.  Joe Strummer’s got on a ho-hum slim black suit but such a suit is almost always a recipe for looking good.

The gorgeous Jennifer Balgobin is, throughout the movie, basically a walking ad for American Apparel.  Look at the top picture for an example.  Spandex top?  Check.  High waisted bottoms?  Check.  That’s not to say she doesn’t class it up a little, though.  A simple, strapless blue dress which looks perfect for the weather…and also strikingly like this Jason Wu.

It’s almost frightening how much the women’s wardrobe in this movie matches up with pieces you’d find in today’s boutiques trending towards the younger gal.  Despite the film’s being over two decades old, the dress pictured above is here, here, and here.  And the boyfriend shirt?  Too many links to think about.

Similarly, this little white number on Michele Winstanley (I think) who, throughout the film, makes you wonder if Karen O got her whole schtick from this one character.  But back to the dress.  Ta-da!  And while the mariachi dressed men behind her probably aren’t exactly in style, they still look pretty awesome.

But before you think there’s only things for the ladies, say hello to Jeeves/Whitey and his killer pink summer suit.  Once again, very similar to something Westwood-ian, it also brings to mind pieces from Junya Watanabe and Filippa K.

The best ensemble in the entire movie, though, is definitely what Jim Jarmusch has got on.  It’s as if the director of such weirdo movies as Mystery Train, Dead Man, and Night On Earth decided to go as Karl Lagerfeld for Halloween.  And it is awesome.

Be warned: Straight to Hell is by no means a cinematic masterpiece, nor will it be in most people’s eyes ‘competent filmmaking’, what with a 5.5 rating on IMDB.  But if you go in with the right attitude, it’s as fun as Robocop and as splendorous as any period piece without being dry and/or expected.  Do yourself a favor and watch it.  (HINT: It’s on YouTube for free).

The collaboration collection, which will debut in September along with the spring 2011 collections at New York Fashion Week, will cost more than regular Theory: Andre Rosen, owner of the label, stated:  “It’s not like selling Olivier Theyskens, the label, at a cheaper price. It really is allowing Olivier Theyskens to design….

This is the only Olivier Theyskens collection that is going to be available. It has to come from Olivier’s inspiration and from his soul. It has to be authentic, so I think some of it will be much higher priced — even than what we’re doing.”

Who isn’t excited about the new collaboration between Olivier Theyskens and Theory? Theory is the massively successful brand has never had a designer personality spearheading the label. The success behind Theory, is the theory that great clothes are always in style and that cut, fabric and clean lines will never just be a trend. Good staples are the core of the Theory look and every girl I know swears by the cut of their pants. Trend schmend. The company is a force to be reckoned with, and next up, the Theyskens Theory capsule collection (though I hate the term capsule, a collection is a collection) will show in September, without fashion show fan fare, which is so smart. This will be one of the more sought after collections by press AND buyers even with all the hullabaloo about Lincoln Center and MAC & MILK. The anticipation will be palpable for what Theyslens Theory will present. Anyhoo..hats off to Andrew Rosen.

A strange collaboration yet we’re all very curious! Olivier hasn’t done much since his departure from Nina Ricci, but the possibility of being able to afford his designs is very exciting. No details have been released yet, we’ll keep you posted.

Zac Posen, known for his gorgeous, typically colorful, gowns has recently hired Laura O’Connor as the Franchise’s new CEO. Formally, O’Connor worked as the president of the Women’s Wear department, for Theory. Posen has said that he looks forward to collaborating with O’Connor.

While I love Theory and adore Zac Posen, they are very different brands. Zac Posen has an intangible flair while Theory is classic. Both brands are wonderful but nonetheless different. Thankfully, you cannot really go wrong with Zac Posen or Theory. Only time will tell what the two new fashion forward partners will come up with.

THEORY has joined with the Public Theater to give a short performance of some songs from HAIR. The performance is free, open to the public and will be performed in front of the THEORY store.
