You know, the kind of tailoring made out of superhero materials like neoprene, rubberized cotton, jacquard… okay that last one was more for the Marie Antoinette type, but she was a cake eating hero, too. Nicola Formichetti and Romain Kremer put out a collection of modern party-after-businessman looks for Mugler Fall 2012. It’s not as wild as the typical Thierry, but the textures carry historical silhouettes into overtime.

It’s officially the future, but color us disappointed. We’ve got a black president, handheld computers and weapons of mass destruction, but what about what else was promised to us by sci-fi films and Saturday morning cartoons. We see nary a flying car. But more importantly, where are the robots, the androids and the bionic men and women? On the one hand, they’re the harbingers of humankind’s downfall. But on the other, they’re the sexy, sentient superbeings here to fulfill our every desire. A good idea in theory, but amazingly creepy in practice. These robots, however, keep our hope of a future rife with robosexual adventure alive and mechanically kicking.

The collection ranges on desert sands and the prints are borne intricately subtle. It’s all the cool girl chic you could want for your when your East Coast and West Coast minds live as one.

FIT Celebrates “The Great Designers” in Two-Part Exhibit

For its ambitious, year-long, two-part exhibit “The Great Designers, Parts One and Two,“ the Museum at FIT went about acquiring some never-before-seen items to add to its already extensive permanent collection of 50,000 garments and accessories. 50 pieces, organized alphabetically by designer, will be displayed per exhibit; from iconic brands like Christian Dior, Chanel, and Givenchy to young, avant-garde designers like Boudicca and Gareth Pugh. Part One, which opened yesterday, runs through May 8, followed shortly by Part Two, opening on May 23.

“The Great Designers” will also be accompanied by the book The Great Designers: Fashion’s Hall of Fame from A to Z, highlighting 500 of the museum’s masterworks by 100 of the 20th- and 21st-century’s most important designers. Publishing in April 2012, the book will include an essay by museum curator Valerie Steele on the history of fashion museums and exhibits, along with short bios on the 100 designers. Eva Mendes “Comes Full Circle” on the Windmills of Mugler’s Mind

“I grew up with Angel. I remember thinking, as a child, ‘That’s what a woman smells like.’ I’m the baby [in my family] by 10 years, and my sisters wore it. It comes full circle now that I’d be the face of Angel.”

– Professional stunner and sometime actress, Eva Mendes, on her new gig as the face of Thierry Mugler‘s 19 year old fragrance, Angel.

The new campaign, conceived by Thierry Mugler himself, is expected to cost about $5 million over the next twelve months. This will include a film shot by British director Baillie Walsh, a significant digital campaign featuring a strong social media component and print ads shot by genius duo, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, set to run in September.

Mendes, who has previously shilled for Revlon and is the current face of Pantene, replaces co-actress Naomi Watts as the Mugler Angel. For the TV commercial, shot in Prague, Eva displays her vocal chops on the classic “Windmills of Your Mind.”

Commencing September 1st, 2011, arts and culture non-profit BOFFO will present the 2nd Annual BOFFO Building Fashion, a celebration of cutting edge design uniting vibrant architects with acclaimed fashion designers. BOFFO Building Fashion debuts with Mugler creative director and the Bob Mackie to Lady Gaga‘s Cher, Nicola Formichetti. Keep reading to see Formichetti’s video where he explains — in his deep, dreamy and vaguely accented voice — his creative process and what it’s like working with the Lady.

Among the other fashion visionaries working with BOFFO are American jewelry designer and celebrity favorite Irene Neuwirth; 2011 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year nominee Patrik Ervell; winners of the 2011 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award for Womenswear, lingerie label The Lake & Stars; and 2009 CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalists Ohne Titel.

From May 19th- July 4th BOFFO will conduct a worldwide competition in partnership with Architizer in search of world-class architects to pair with these innovative fashion designers. Architects are asked to submit design proposals expressing their vision of a retail space for their fashion designer of choice.

Winners will be awarded $20,000 to build and install their installation.

Theatricality. Aside from a fairly epic episode of Glee, it is the main ingredient in the delicious, nutritious and seared delirious Ahi salad that is Lady Gaga. Our generation doesn’t have a Bowie, or a Mercury, or a P-Funk to blow our minds as we blow our rails. But we do have a Gaga, who takes a bit of all of that, mixes it together, throws on a rich haute couture dressing and calls it Pop. For her May Harper’s Bazaar spread, the Lady keeps the S.S. Freak Show on a steady course and the results are fantastic.

Terry Richardson catches the popstar in her natural element: tranny heels, masks and bodysuits. Providing that element is stylist and Gay Friday, Nicola Formichetti, who keeps Her Royal Gagness resplendent in her staples — Mugler, Alexander McQueen, Versace and Dior — with a sprinkling of a custom Francesco Scognamiglio bodysuit here and a gothic Tex Saverio dress there.

Make no ~~facial prosthetics~~ bones about it, when it comes to putting on a show, there’s no one who can do it like Lady Gaga. Whether you care to see the show is a matter of personal opinion, but as long as she keeps making me dance, laugh and maybe even occasionally think, I’ve got my ticket.

Lady Gaga & Nicola Formichetti Make Mugler Video Sizzle

In a show that had Lady Gaga’s paw print cemented to the aesthetic, Nicola Formichetti insurrected Mugler with a visual feast. Gaga’s gave us a taste of her new single Government Hooker as she made her modeling debut, working her monstrous platforms better than many professional models worked their curvaceous heels. On the live stream (or the luckiest, in Paris) we watched the show in its entirety, with Gaga’s new song interspersed with a hopped up version of Born This Way. Now we can watch it in the concise manner the Creative Director envisioned it. Gagalicious video ahead.

Sheer-bodied solid-armed pieces sauntered alongside pleather-cum-latex pants and trenches, surrounded by the sky-high shoulders of the eighties’ Thierry Mugler. The shoulders that Gaga helped to resurrect. As the looks turned to rubberized armor amongst a show where models became lively sirens, clutching at the wooden column archway, becoming little monster on the runway, the Mugler philosophy came to light: Entertainment.

Nicola Formichetti debuted his hypersexual but minimalist collection for Mugler yesterday (we at the Fashion Indie loft were screaming at it via Facebook) and of course Lady Gaga stole the show as only a Lady Gaga could. But the collection was a triumph, mixing Mugler’s ferociously fierce history and Formichetti’s darker leanings. Through it all, Terry Richardson was there to document the comings and turnings. This photo snapped backstage of the three provocateurs tells a story all of its own.

Terry: I just fondled some underage boob. Thumbs up!

Nicola: She wasn’t umderage. And she wasn’t a she.

Gaga: Yeah, he was born that wa-hay. Get it? Hit!

Terry: Either way, me gots some boob touch. Thumbs up!

Nicola: My thumbs don’t do that.

Gaga: And my hand can only do this. Ra!

Okay, so: A.) It’s great that Gags and Formichetti have helped each other basically take over the world. B.) This is an example of some amazing marketing. And C.) Dead.

Glimpses of the alien woman sculpture by Rein Vollenga have been leaking out for the past few days in anticipation of Nicola Formichetti‘s Mugler women’s collection on Wednesday. Now a brooding video, shot by Benjamin Alexander Huseby, showing that very sculpture dangling from Gaga knows what has found its way online.

Speaking of the Lady, Gags will debut a new track at the Mugler show, live streaming from Paris on their Facebook page March 2nd at 3 pm EST.

I might die of anticipation before then, however.

An image from Nicola Formichetti’s first women’s line for Thierry Mugler debuted today and it’s suitably ambiguous and epic. I’m getting Sigourney Weaver-era Alien meets Nubian queen meets luxury car hood ornament.

The collection, entitled “Anatomy of Change,” will debut on March 2nd at Paris Fashion Week but to tempt our taste buds, Mugler will be releasing one “official inspiration image” — presumably related to some part of the anatomy — per day until then.

Consider me inspired.

Finally, the dolls of my dreams have bitch-slapped their way onto store shelves; Lauren Conrad is apparently classier than Snooki (yeah, right); and Elle Fanning is clearly outshining older sister Dakota thanks to the Mulleavy sisters.

- Alexis and Krystal Carrington have been turned into Barbie dolls for the 30th anniversary of Dynasty. Mattel has somehow perfected Alexis’ signature snide British bitchery though I was hoping Krystal would have the linebacker shoulders of her real life counterpart. They should’ve just dressed Ken up in drag…not like he has any business to tuck. [Gawker]

- Lauren Conrad claims that her new reality show, which would follow the creation of her new line, was “too high brow” for MTV. Of course in MTV speak, “high brow” means boring and lacking enough jacuzzi’d threesomes. [Fashionista]

- ESPN‘s manly “commentators drool over other men’s abs, thighs and guns. ESPN The Magazine’s response to the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is its Body issue, which features entirely naked men (and some women).” Meanwhile, when I drool over other men’s abs, thighs and guns it’s all, “Dude, stop filming me in the shower.” Double standards. A Mugler Short Film Starring Lady Gaga’s New Song

Nicola Formichetti for Mugler Preview

Nicola Formichetti, he of the Haus of Gaga, just released the first official preview image from his Mugler Men‘s ready to wear line and in typical Formichetti fashion it’s kind of the best thing ever.

The collection will debut in Paris on January 19th and will be Nicola’s official coming out party as Creative Director of the brand.

Lady Gaga is the first artist to reach 1 billion views on the YouTube. That’s a lot of Mugler bodysuits, dead boyfriends, vaguely religious imagery and pantsless choreography. But somehow…not enough.

Justin Bieber is a close second, however his video for “Baby” is still the Most-Viewed Video of All Time.That’s a lot of…okay, I’ve never actually seen any Justin Bieber videos, but I’ll assume it’s a lot of hair gel, tweenaged girls and Ludacris.

Somehow that seems way more than enough.

In other news, remember when artists sold albums? Yeah, me neither.

Young British designer Gareth Pugh first launched his eponymous line in 2006 and since then has been linked to many different fashion houses. Most recently, he has been rumoured (falsely) to be taking over the helm of Alexander McQueen, and today there is talk of him working at Thierry Mugler.

“The reason I quit fashion was that I had had enough of spending my time always being on my knees, making other people look amazing and fabulous,” he said. “I used fashion to express myself as much as I could. But at some point, it was not enough.” – Thierry Mugler to the New York Times.

The interview also revealed Thierry’s new passion, perfumes. The designer is set to launch a line of scents, the first one being called Womanity, which the Times describes as “a commingling of figs and caviar, a sweet-salty combination as treacly as a chocolate-covered pretzel.” The marketing campaign involves a website where women can talk about their womanity.

VILLAGE CARE OF NEW YORK’S 8th ANNUAL “TULIPS & PANSIES – THE HEADDRESS AFFAIR” will be on Thursday, May 14, and I can’t tell you how excited both Daniel and I are. We had such a great time last year (photos above). And this years designers are top tier: Tory Burch, Chado Ralph Rucci, Pamella Roland, Cynthia Steffe, Lilly Pulitzer, Alvin Valley, Thierry Mugler, Zang Toi, Michael Vollbracht, b.michael and others.

Each designer will be paired with NYC’s finest floral designers including Preston Bailey, L’Olivier, Ovando and Zezé in order to create a high-fashion runway show of elaborate floral headdresses made entirely from living plants and fresh cut flowers. The event, which raises funds for Village Care of New York, a non-profit organization providing vital health care programs to people living with HIV/AIDS, is Chaired by Jack Curry, Editor of USA Weekend and TV Guide and Kelly Cutrone, Founder of People’s Revolution.

DESIGNER TO KNOW: Serge Thoraval

While spending some quality New York bumming in the Meatpacking District this weekend, I stumbled upon a little boutique by the name of Destination. Though the shop had a wide variety of great fashion accessories, I was immediately drawn to wooden case containing dozens of incredible French-text etched silver rings, bracelets and necklaces.

The designer, Serge Thoraval, got his start in the jewelry business when a fellow jeweler asked for his sowdering assistance in a Yves Saint Laurent accessory collection. Sparking his interest, Thoraval began his own personal collection, Atelier Serge Thoraval, and has since worked with designers Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana, Lanvin Haute Couture and Joseph on collaborations.

The jewelry itself is industrial and rough but the etched French quotes, collected from various authors, invoke a bit of emotion with their meaning. The best part about Serge Thoraval’s work is that it’s all one of a kind. Each piece is molded, sized and etched by hand, providing complete uniqueness. Honestly, this is some of the best handcrafted work I’ve seen in a while!

Thierry Mugler Releases Sketches for Beyonce Tour

Beyonce was so taken by Thierry Mugler’s designs for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Superheroes exhibition, that she hired him on as the creative adviser for her world tour. Images of his designs have been released and they are amazing.

Mugler explained to WWD, “Sasha Fierce is another aspect of Beyonce’s personality. She is Fierce on stage and Beyonce in real life. I tried to understand these two sides with my own perception of both aspects. The duality between being a woman and a warrior.”

Mugler also worked on lighting and sets for the tour in which we should expect to see the singer “metamorphosis” on stage.

Beyonkey Donkey Flaunts Her Mugler

Look at all that Beyonkey Donkey poured into a breathtaking Thierry Mugler original. It’s like a bucket of KFC original but tastier and much more greasy. Oh to be the Spanx huggin all 32′-24′-36′ of that jelly. Beyonce taunts we the fashion elite on the set of her tour promo shoot in a Mugler one of a kind that is clearly NOT House of Dereon, Mama Tina gon’ kill her a few stylists before lunch. I don’t know if you all remember, but Mugler has designed all the costumes and pieces for Beyonce’s new world tour, including that of her dancers and band. I don’t know how much that costs but let’s just say to pay for it, I’m sure Sasha Fierce is gonna have to shake that monkey until it shatters and falls to pieces. If this is just a taste of what Mugler has designed for B’s new tour, clearly I’m going to need a wet nurse and a fresh pack of Depends cuz I’ll be soiling myself with sheer delightz. Actually, I’m soiling myself right now and you all have been a part of it………….and that just makes is that much more special Indiez. Now pass me a baby wipe……..thank ya dear.

Vintage Shopping Goes Digital With Vagabond NYC

Just when I thought vintage clothing couldn’t get any cooler, I stumble upon Vagabond NYC, the online vintage designer shop, vintage-wear editorial spread and vintage clothing blog. Created by Andrea Perini and Naveed Hussain, Vagabond NYC is geared towards the fashion consumer in search of vintage styling and the couture ghost of fashion’s past. Shoppers can directly purchase complete outfits, as seen in the digital editorials, or browse through an array of vintage (or vintage lookalike) collectables. From vintage Givenchy and Helmut Lang to old school Stephen Sprouse and Thierry Mugler, Vagabond NYC really has everything an indebted label lover could ask for. And the editorial styling? To die for.

Oooo Beyonce, you so dif’rent and stuffz! Here’s Beyonkey Donkey(I mean that with the utmost obsessive desire) gracing the cover of Elle in what has to be the most gangsta promotions blitz since Comb-Over Trump bulldogged his way onto every morning show to rip Rosie O’Donnell a gaping new birthin’ shoot. I wonder if Grace Jones knows that Beyonce challenging her swag? Clearly this new dark chapter in B-style is leading up to the looks that Thierry Mugler will be designing for her tour. Now THAT, Indies, makes me so happy, I’m having a happy ending right now………………..and you’ve all be a part of it…………Now Put A Ring On It!

I’m personally enjoying her departure from her signature, wholesome, southern pageant girl sparkles………………….of course I’d suck her putrid toes after she’d finished the New York marathon in air tight shoes and no socks on………..don’t judge me!
Yawl know Beyonce gets me to sweatin’ like some Las Vegas hos at a Baptist Virginity Declaration ceremony.

Thierry Mugler to Design Beyonce Tour

Thierry Mugler will be costuming Beyonce’s tour. “In addition to serving as ‘creative adviser,’ with input on everything from set lighting to choreography, Mugler will direct three segments of the show, called ‘Dangerously in Love,’ ‘Ave Maria’ and the finale. He’ll also costume the production — from the star herself, who will wear approximately 58 Mugler creations, to the band, back-up dancers and singers.” via WWD
