In an intensely stunning study of light, Yukinori Maeda has been manipulating, translating and presenting the concept artistically as Cosmic Wonder out of Tokyo since 1997. In 2007, the wondering team began focusing the light on clothing, and how light affects weaving, and also how they can make the entire process light on the environment. Believing that a fashionable lifestyle should encompass admiring and supporting artistic practices that cause no harm to the earth, they “reflect natural beauty in the finished pieces.” COSMIC WONDER Light Source plays with light on the surface of their designs, fading plaids, and creating emanating stars from printed textures.

And through this video, we get to go to Tokyo with them.

Over the weekend, you may have werqed designer discounts for charity at the Housingworks Fashion For Action sale. We caught up with charity co-chairs Rachel Roy and Thom Browne at the launch event last week about their recent travels, the thrill of the thrift, and their will to give back. See what these design ingenues have to say on the matter.

Where have they been travelling?

Rachel Roy: “I was in Ghana at the orphanage that Margherita Missoni introduced me to. She and her mom work on it, and now myself and my daughter my older one, we work on it. Kids run up to the cars as you’re arriving. Little girls, they wanted my lipgloss. It’s the same everywhere! In terms of what can make someone feel god about themselves, it’s universal.”

Thom Browne: “I just got back from back from Tokyo, and it’s amazing. Tthe best place to go is to the Okura Hotel and experience the lobby.”

Clothing essentials for the journey?

Rachel Roy: It depends because I have 2 distinct lives when traveling. I have with my girls, because then it has to be comfortable and quick: for example I’m taking my girls to Miami this weekend, so in my bag I will have men’s Levis 501s and indian thong sandals. And I won’t take them off. Then I have business, so that means I’m usually presenting a collection so I’m wearing something from the collection.

Thom Browne: A grey suit! Of course.

Were/are you a thrifter?

Rachel Roy: I grew up shopping in Salvation Army by necessity. I wasn’t that cool of a 12-year-old, I just couldn’t afford anything. And I didn’t like the options in Mervins. Also I was quite tall so things didn’t fit. I liked the hunt of it, and to this day there is not a garage sale – well you’re not gonna find them in NY, but if I’m away – that I can’t walk by without stopping. I can’t stop looking. One strong passion is making something beautiful out of something someone has discarded. That was pretty much my childhood. The other is proving that things really aren’t modern today unless you mix it.

Thom Browne: I used to be, but not as much now. [My involvement with Fashion for Action is] more for the organization [Housingworks]. It’s an amazing organization, they do such amazing work and give back. I think we’re all so lucky, it’s nice to be able to give back.

Shop Housingworks year round in NYC for thrift worth the hunt.

In terms of cuisine, New York City has everything you could possibly want- if you starve here, it’s your own fault. But one thing was missing from the NYC food scene until this morning when the world’s most renowned macaroonery finally opened its doors here in our fair city. Established in Paris in 1862, Maison Ladurée patisserie has finally landed stateside.

With shops already in cities like London, Tokyo and Luxembourg, it’s about time we got a taste of Maison Ladurée‘s famous macarons. As flavors shift with the seasons, you’ll find these delightful little pastries in Lily of the Valley, Orange Passion, Chuao Origine Pure Chocolate, just to name a few. Plus, Maison Ladurée offers the most gorgeous packaging you could ever want, so these little treats make the perfect gift.

Still not convinced? The French patisserie is known for creating the double decker macaroon and made all of the pastries for the film Marie Antoinette. It’s also a favorite of Gossip Girl Blair Waldorf. The shop just opened today at 864 Madison Ave. between 71st and 72nd Streets, so run to get your sugar high before the rush.

- W‘s longtime fashion and style editor, Alex White, is leaving the mag to pursue her own projects — possibly including an online magazine — but fear not, fellow obsessive editorial lovers! Vogue contributing editor Edward Enninful — whose recent work includes the stunning “The Blackallure” for Vogue Italia — will take her place starting May 1. White has been with W since 1994 and has helped ease what has been a slightly rocky transition from the Patrick McCarthy to Stefano Tonchi era. According to both White and Tonchi, however, the split is amicable and mutually agreed upon. [WWD]

- What with the massive earthquake, massive aftershocks and subsequent tsunami, Japan Fashion Week had to take a bit of a backseat. But the Japanese fashion industry won’t let Mother Nature torrentially rain on their parade. Designers have joined forces to form <del>Voltron</del> a website featuring all of their collections for the Fall 2011 season. [The Cut]

- Beloved royal ginger (seriously, who’s his dad?) Prince Harry is not slacking off on his best man duties. As the self-appointed “wedmin,” Harry has had three state rooms in Buckingham Palace converted into a nightclub with a DJ playing well into the morning hours. For those still standing, there will be a 6 a.m. “survivor’s breakfast.” Oh, and this is also happening:

A chest full of booze, namely rum and champagne. Meanwhile, Kate Middleton might have found her soulmate in Prince William, but I just fell head over tranny heels for Harry. [Daily Mail]

Though Paris may be the epitome of high fashion, Tokyo has stuck a chopstick in the realm of fast-fashion with it’s biannual Tokyo Girls Collection. TGC is Fashion Week meets Comic-Con, with over 20,000 attendees forking over as much as 7500 yen ($91.59 — at least the dollar is worth something somewhere) to be part of the action. As models strut down the runway during the 7-hour event, participants can buy the fashions using their cell phones while enjoying J-pop performances peppered throughout the day. And for the first time in TGC’s six year history, the event will be live-streamed.

In partnership with Google, the organizers of TGC have created a custom platform to live-stream on YouTube, broadcasting not only the fashion show, but also backstage footage and interviews with the models. Unfortunately, if any of the looks strike your fancy, you’re shit out of luck. That is unless you live in Japan; deliveries are limited to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Though specializing in fast-fashion, TGC will enter the luxury lane thanks to another lucrative partner: Vogue. Vogue Girl, a stand-alone publication, will hit Japanese newsstands on March 12; but before then, Vogue Girl will mount a special fashion show, combining local fast-fashion brands with luxury accessories from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Fendi and Marc Jacobs.

I wonder, with Tokyo Girl Collection crossing the cybernetic seas, if we can expect a similar event here in the states? I mean, Fashion Week could only benefit from a little J-pop.

Link Love: WWD

Masashi Kawamura combines fashion and typography in a subtle and super creative way for his ‘T’ Shirt line. The shirts are designed so their silhouettes mimic five famous typefaces: Helvetica, Caslon, Baskerville, Courier and Cooper Black. Grab the line from No Control Air starting in January.

One of my favorite hobbies is making Tees but this is total genius! I wonder what a dress in the shape of an ‘N’ would look like?

First of all, thank you everyone for your generous input on our previous 5 Travel Fashion Essentials post! Some of your comments have inspired me to create a series of Street Style around the World, gleaned from our observation of during visits to cities like Tokyo, Paris, London, Hong Kong, and many more! I find it intriguing how no two cities in the world have similar street styles and fashion. I figured that we should start from where we are from: Singapore. What better way is there to start off the street style series than from the place we spend most of our time in? It will probably be useful to all of you travelling to Singapore or any warmer climates during holidays, as well. Here is my take on the street style of Singapore:

? It’s hard to summarize something so diverse as street style and fashion, but Singapore is known for its fusion of the east and the west. This applies to our street style too: You can see a distinct separation between Japanese-inspired fashion, and western influnced style. I would say it’s about a 50-50 mix of the both in the streets of Singapore, although sometimes you can see an interesting mix between the two!

? In general, layering of clothing is not a trend in Singapore. This has got to do with our warm and humid climate – it is simply too warm outside to experiment with much layering! (Doesn’t stop us from doing it, but we do have a flagrant disregard for dressing for the weather.) This applies to head wear like hats and berets as well. Without such warm weather, I am sure we can see a wider variety of styles on our streets.

? I would say the fashion, or perhaps culture, is to dress down in Singapore. For some reason (which I do not approve of), people think it’s alright to dress in t-shirts and slippers to shop in town! But let’s put aside my prejudices and focus on the street style: Lots of flats and gladiator sandals, shorts and tank tops. I have seen a rise in the number of girls wearing heels lately, but a large percentage of them still prefer flats to heels and wedges. Any boots that goes higher than ankle boots are rarely seen.

Tips for dressing for Singapore

I suppose this section would be pretty useful for foreigners travelling to Singapore! I hope this can inspire Singaporeans to dress up more as well, because it is entire possible.

? Like I’ve already mentioned above, Singapore is hot and humid year round, so breathable materials like cotton, jersey and chiffon is always in fashion. On the contrary, do try to avoid fabrics like PVC and leather. It’s too hot for them and you will find yourself sweating up a storm and having heat rashes – Not very attractive and healthy!

One additional tip for leather and pleather in Singapore. Heat and humidity encourages the growth of mould and fungus. Organic materials like leather can and will grow mould if you don’t take care of it! I’ve had many boots succumb to irreversible mould infestation. Pleather won’t get mouldy, but it will peel and flake. To prevent this from happening, remember to store your leather and pleather in a dry environment. Dry the items well should they come in contact with water. Investing in a dehumidifier will do you well in the long term!

? Layering is still very much possible despite the heat in Singapore. The key to layering in Singapore is to stick to light, breathable fabrics: Silks, Chiffons and tulle for example. Arissa shows you how it can be done here and here as well! I love how layering different pieces can create a totally different style and look, so do not discount this just because of the weather! Singapore fashion doesn’t have to be boring just because it is hot.

This Alexander Wang-inspired top may be made of jersey, but it’s light and breathable. Pieces like this are perfect for layering.

? Weather in Singapore can only be described as being erratic. It can be sunny one moment, and pouring the very next. Hence, it might do you well to carry a light cardigan or blazer around at all times. Furthermore, almost all indoor places in Singapore are air-conditioned. It can actually get pretty chilly inside! I always carry with me a jacket for those times where I have to spend time indoors with air-conditioning at full-blast. Scarves work equally well! It’s not uncommon to see many Singaporean girls wearing light jackets and scarves on the streets.

It doesn’t have to be a thick jacket. This one made of jersey from Topshop does an adequate job!

? We have an extremely efficient network of roads and public transport system. So it is entirely possible to wear heels without much discomfort! Heels can do wonders to an outfit and I find it a pity that most Singaporean girls have yet to integrate them into their wardrobe. There are only so much flats you can have before they all start to look the same. Kick up your style a notch by wearing heels! Some outfits look so much better with heels than flats anyway, heels does so much more for your look than flats. Wearing a kickass pair of heels on the streets is one sure fire way to stand out in Singapore.

Wedges are a comfortable and stylish alternative to flats.

Here’s my take on the Street Style and fashion of Singapore. What do you think about it? Anything else you feel that I should add on?

ANTHOLOGY SHOES WILL TAKE YOU TO PLACES: Funny how it seems and to take note that most of their pairs are named after a place. With their naming and as I try to put sense or merely play with the idea, I can say that Anthology shoes can take you to far away places comfortably without getting any blisters –your feet for that matter. With Anthology, you need not bring slippers in your bag which you might need after a long walk –know what I'm talking about, yea?

I already made two or even three posts raving about Anthology shoes that you might just want to check for FYIs since I don’t want to get redundant and go over the FAQs and the like. (K. Might as well supply the link of the most comprehensive one, LOL, as if here)

With that being said, I found new ones I really like which are as follow:

This new baby I should see and try on! They come in gold, silver and black patent (Thank God!).

pictures and color choices info from Tricia Gosingtian's post HERE

Then, upon browsing Anthology's site, I came across this pair of bow and studs!

”TOKYO”

If you opt for printed ones, this is pretty good:

“NASSAU”

Lastly, leaning on a masculine side or touch, they have brogues now!

Some shots from the Forever 21 preview party (and one from the next morning) – things started off surreally with a walk by the campaign bus on the way in..there was an editor’s hour previewing new pieces, sipping champagne, and marveling over the cab parked at the bottom level and the 90,000 square feet the store covers…progressed into a packed house and a performance by The Virgins. I had a ton of fun and got to see a lot of my favorite faces..thanks F21 for having us! See more shots on their blog here – I’m at the Salt Lake City airport right now so I only have a few photos that I was able to upload before leaving my house this morning..but there are defintely more to come. Heading to Tokyo for a few photo shoots that I’m super excited about..just gotta get through this interminable layover first..I think my next step is wandering around in hopes of finding a Jamba Juice.

If there is one thing you should know about japanese street trends, it’s that when it hits, you wouldn’t be able to miss it unless you are blind. You can walk down a street and literally spot a dozen girls sporting the same trends. I admit that I am smitten by a few of these trends myself, and will be high lighting some of the most prominent trends this spring/summer season!

The little cotton dress: Light-coloured cotton dresses ranging from mid thigh to maxi length. Maxi dresses are especially popular.

As seen on the streets:

If a singular item can sum up the trend in Japan right now, it would be the straw boater hat.

Scarves can be worn in a variety of ways – on the neck, tied on the back, or most commonly in the hair!

Hold on to your shopping bags, because they may just be the next, big accessory to carry around. Teens in Tokyo, Japan have created a paper bag trend in the city, by using the bags as actual accessories to carry their every-day items in. Don’t think you can get away with carrying just any bag around, though. This rising trend follows the same rule of fashion as any other—the bigger the brand, the better.

It’s highly doubtful that this will fully replace anyone’s favorite Marc Jacobs tote, but it is a fun and eco-friendly way of sporting a designer brand.
