It’s taken me a while to make a decision about the denim on denim look, but after seeing it hit the streets in such variety, my verdict is in: two thumbs up! Fear not, I’m not talking about the Americana, Tommy Hilfiger blue-jean material, but the more current raw, light-washed and distressed denim. What I love about the denim on denim trend is its simplicity, its ability to be mixed and matched and its blank-slate, “please enhance me” appeal. Really, the possibilities are endless. I love the raw denims with a bow-tie, suit-coat and oxfords for a more formal, menswear look, just as I love the cutesy, springtime vibe a gal can get from wearing lighter denims with a pair of wedge heels and a big, floppy hat. For the time being, i’d ixnay on the boots…don’t want to look like cowboy, now do we?

Thanks WWD!

Marky Ramone and Paper Mag Create a Scene: TONIGHT all indie

We’ve all heard about Tommy Hilfiger’s attempt to be as rock friendly as John Varvatos by partnering with a Ramone, but now it’s time to party with the likes of rock gods. Marky Ramone will be performing. It will most likely be epic (or seriously tears).

MOMENT OF STYLE: Diane Kruger & Joshua Jackson all indie

Are there any sayings about the couple who dresses together staying together?

Looking very much like extras from Gossip Girl, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson showed up to the Tommy Hilfiger show Thursday in matching shades and almost-matching scarves complementing their equally sharp ensembles.

Diane’s blazer is Tommy Hilfiger.

Giorgio Armani’s Feathers Get Tattered and FURled

AUSTRALIA-FASHION-FUR-ARMANI

What happens when you squelch on a promise made with PETA? First they get their creative team to design a quirky poster to point out your inhumanity. Then they send hundreds of supporters to protest with the posters. Oh, and sometimes they go as far as taking a full page ad in Variety just to make their point.

The new “Pinocchio Armani” advertisement is not only a ploy for embarrassing payback, but a plea for those attending this year’s Oscars to avoid Armani garments. The animal rights group has even taken the liberty of writing to Oscar nominees, encouraging them to wear the fur-free designs of Stella McCartney, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood.

I must admit, the advertisement made me laugh, but I guess we’ll see who’s laughing when Armani remains a red-carpet hit or PETA sticks it to the man.

DESIGNER TO KNOW: Rock Scene by Tommy Hilfiger and Marky Ramone

DESIGNER TO KNOW: Rock Scene by Tommy Hilfiger and Marky Ramone menswear designers

Well, this is out of nowhere!

Tommy Hilfiger (yes, that Tommy Hilfiger) has apparently known Marky Ramone (yes, that Marky Ramone) for 23 years, and now they’re working together on a clothing line.

Their collaboration, Rock Scene, is set to debut in February, and will include styles for men and women.

Obviously influenced by the New York punk scene of the ’70s and ’80s, the pieces feature “stencil lettering, slim silhouettes, and other hallmarks of rock ‘n’ roll chic.”

Aware of how much the Ramones have influenced fashion, Marky Ramone tells ELLE, “There are T-shirts with the Rock Scene logo and really cool images from the CBGB era. The leather jacket has a soft feel with really cool stud work that’s tasteful. It isn’t overdone. The pants are a lighter blue and have studs on one pocket.”

No word yet on the price range of the line, but Marky does point out that fans will “not have to spend $3,000 or $4,000.”

From ELLE.

You Are NOT Cordially Invited. emerging fashion

Pssst. Pssst. Did you hear? Tommy Hilfiger is tying the knot with three-year sweetheart Dee Ocleppo…TODAY! Don’t feel bad that you didn’t get an invitation because actually, nobody did. The two will say their vows at an ultra-private wedding ceremony in Greenwich, Connecticut at Hilfiger’s estate. The couple plans to celebrate their marriage publicly at a New Years bash. And if you aren’t already jealous of Ocleppo’s 8.2 carat engagement ring, just know that the Hilfiger plans on taking his bride to Mustique, a private island in the West Indies popular with the glitterati. Sorry folks, try as you might but you aren’t getting near the married couple until at least the beginning of 2009.

Thanks New York Post!

Sonny Vandevelde is a European-born, Sydney-raised photographer. Fed up with the unimaginative “tunnel vision” of his photography instructors, he dropped out of college and learned his craft his own way. His father did lighting on film sets, so Vandevelde picked up equipment and technical knowledge from working with him.

Vandevelde started in sports photography for Australian magazines and moved onto catalog work for Quiksilver. From his personal photography of friends, he got into documenting local night life and learning about the fashion world. At this point he’s more of a Cobrasnake than a Leibowitz, focusing more on the personality of the models and subjects than the technicalities and traditions of his work. In much of his backstage work, models are smiling!

A “lifestyle-fashion photographer,” Vandevelde describes his work as “colorful…energetic…vibrant”

Vandevelde’s portfolio includes campaigns for Lucky Brand Jeans, Lee Jeans, Billabong, and Tommy Hilfiger, and his work has also appeared in Pulp, Link, Hint, Cosmopolitan, and other publications. His signature is documenting the backstage at runway shows and speaking out against formulaic magazines whose editorials don’t let the personalities of the models shine through.

Interview with Vandevelde here.

Tommy and Dee Quit Before The I dos emerging fashion

Dee could practically imagine herself strolling down the isle in her white Oscar de la Renta wedding dress to the chimes of wedding bells, but news has recently surfaced that Tommy Hilifiger and Dee called it quits. The engagement is off and we’re not quite sure why, but one things for sure, it was certainly abrupt; The wedding was set to take place this Friday! The ceremony was only called for close friends and family, but in October the Plaza, in New York, was supposed to be housing an elaborate 500 person celebration for the match.

Christina looks stunning in purple as she wishes Macy’s a Happy 150th B-Day is this new ad campaign. Don’t know why they choose Christy, but the ads (due in October) are also set to feature Donald Trump, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Martha Stewart. All I can say, is that she looks amazing, very signature Christina with dark lipstick, smoky eyes, and bleach blond hair (which actually looks gorgeous against the white roses, not to mention purple is my favorite color.

Esquire Attempts To Squeeze Some Art Out Of Its Covers

Esquire Magazine, in a brazen attempt to still seem relevant in todays world of dotcom fashion, decided to celebrate their 75th Anniversary by recreating some of their “iconic” covers created by long time art director George Lois. Most of the photos are pretty poor attempts at recreation and most of the newer images are just too different from the originals.  I can appreciate the Vivienne Westwood shot, which corresponds to an anti-war cover for the magazine that featured the 100th murdered Vietnam solider. Aside from that the connections seem strained.
