The UN’s Millennium Development Goals strive to cut extreme poverty and hunger in half, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality by two-thirds, reduce maternal mortality by three-quarters, combat preventable diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development all by 2015.

To date, they have made considerable progress with a 74% reduction in measles deaths, 4 million people receiving life-saving AIDS treatment and more than 30 million children in primary school in Africa alone.

Tommy Hilfiger, who donated $2 million to Millennium Promise in 2010, recently visited Ruhiira, Uganda to see the difference his contribution made and connect with the locals. Earlier this year Katie Holmes, official ambassador for The Promise Collection, also paid a visit to Ruhiira, video and photos of which are available on the Tommy website.

“I was drawn to the project from the moment I heard about it, as its goal is not just to donate funds,” she said, “but to give villagers the support they need to create a self-sustaining future.”

So what do you think of the nominees? The Olsens sure have come a long way, baby, but does Marc Jacobs really need/deserve another CFDA nomination?

And bloggers have made their official entrée into the CFDA with noted streetstyle documentarians, Garance Doré and The Sartorialist‘s Scott Schuman, receiving the Media Award — is this a new level of legitimacy for the blogosphere? And if so, who’s next?

Also, when did that homeless man on the street known as Johnny Depp become a fashion icon? These questions and others will be answered on June 4 at the CFDA Awards. [WWD]

Hilfiger will help guide each contestant to shape and define their personal styles and images because as we all know, video killed the radio star.

“If you look at what makes a star, it’s not only musical talent, it’s the complete package,” Hilfiger told WWD. “And that includes image. If you look at great superstars from Michael Jackson to Madonna and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry [Ed. note: no] today, they each have a unique style and that adds to their persona. It’s the icing on the cake.”

While the designer has outfitted many a star over the years, he won’t be confining himself to “one brand,” i.e. his own. But if a Hilfiger dress or slack makes it on the air a few times a week — so what, who cares? Sure as shootin’ not Idol, which wouldn’t mind if they started a few trends that didn’t end in yet another singing reality competition show.

First of all, I was barely aware that American Idol was still on since it ceased to exist in my mind as anything of note when future Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson was kicked off 40 years ago — but apparently it’s the number one show in America.

Re-evaluate your priorities, America.

Second, isn’t Jennifer Lopez example enough of an “image expert” since she’s built a career on a series of looks and showstopping gowns, punctuated with the occasional romantic comedy or club banger. What can Tommy Hilfiger possibly show these contestants that J. Lo hasn’t taught, like, everyone since Selena?

The CFDA celebrates its half centennial next year and is launching its “Stars of American Fashion” endowment drive. In an effort to raise $2.5 million, the CFDA is selling 50 stars at $50,000 a pop to designers, who will then personalize their star before it ends up on a special American flag.

28 designers have bought stars so far, including Tom Ford, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang. [WWD]

Let us remember a time when 7th was on 6th, when Betsey Johnson could roll her rolling racks down the block, skipping and singing to her show. When fashion made a spectacle for commoners to notice in the middle of a “public park”, when there was more than the 1 2 3 to get you there. When NYFW got classy, got prestige, got monetized, then outgrown.

On hand to toast Wintour — who never met a Chanel bouclé tweed she didn’t drape over her frail back — were Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace with bff Riccardo Tisci — fresh off his glorious fall 2011 haute couture collection for Givenchy – Lanvin‘s Alber Elbaz, Anna’s Italian counterpart Franca Sozzani, Mario Testino, LVMH head honcho Bernard Arnault, YSL‘s Stefano Pilati, Burberry‘s Christopher Bailey,  Tommy Hilfiger, professional dandy and Vogue‘s editor-at-large Hamish Bowles and the Rhoda to Anna’s Mary, Grace Coddington.

Hilfiger would join Joel Horowtiz, Silas Chou and Lawrence Stroll in the venture; the fab four were the original investors in the Tommy Hilfiger brand, while Chou and Stroll bought Michael Kors in 2003 for a reported $100 million.

Hilfiger remained coy about his involvement, saying that ”Anybody would be crazy not to invest in it. Michael Kors is the next major global player in my eyes.”

He did, however, express great confidence in his partners:  ”For over 20 years, we’ve invested in things together. If they ask me, of course I’ll invest.”

Kors is planning on an initial public offering ASAP with some sources estimating the value of the company at $2 billion. While Prada is the latest clothes horse to trot out an IPO, Kors will be the first American designer in a while to do so.

Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan completed their IPOs in the late nineties, but very few brands are in as an advantageous position as Kors to  lure investors with an established business that still has room to grow.

And grow it shall with Michael Kors planning on adding 50 retail locations in Greater China over the next three years, as well as a new flagship store on Fifth Ave. [WWD]

“She lives fashion. She sings about and says it’s the most fun thing about getting ready for Idol. Her eyes light up when you ask her what kind of shoes she’s wearing.” So says Tommy Hilfiger, who’s working with La Lopez on her newest line for Kohl’s.

If you remember, in the heady days of Bennifer when Jenny purported she was from the block, she started JLO and its allegedly higher end line, Sweetface. It made sense, she was a bona fide fashion icon, scoring more hits on the red carpet than at the box office.

And of course, the plunging neckline heard round the world:

That dress made Jennifer Lopez’s career — and coincidentally revived Versace which was struggling under Donatella Versace after the death of her brother Gianni three years earlier in 1997 — and propelled her to fashion fame (and infamy).

So it made sense for her of all people to start a fashion line, but she apparently “didn’t understand the business well enough.” Now with a new Hilfiger on board — Andy, Tommy’s younger brother, was J.Lo’s JLO partner — the old girl’s ready to give it another go.

Sure, Kohl’s isn’t a runway in Milan or a luxurious presentation on the French Riviera, but J. Lo’s going to be getting that J. Simps money.* Coupled with her cushy gig on American Idol, a hit dance song (the gays will take anything) and DVD sales from Selena, La Lopez has mounted a comeback!

And I couldn’t be happier.

There are so few real stars left since reality TV and the Internet has ruined fame for everyone (p.s. follow me on Twitter @LesFabian). Sure, she’s not the most talented singer, or actress, or dancer, or fashion designer, but hey — she’s the best at pretending to do all of them. And that’s called star power, kids.

Inside, dashing waiters in preppy bow ties and seersucker were spoiling guests with breakfast treats (literally on silver platters) while editors were browsing the bright and cheery wardrobe for summer-cottage staples (because obviously we all have a summer-cottage closet that needs filling).

Down to the details of Hilfiger Prep World polo shirt cookies, the overall display was the ultimate in housewife hostess porn.

On growing up as the daughter of Pearl Lowe: “I was a kid, so my childhood wasn’t mental to me. You don’t question it, that was just what my life was like. But maybe it means that with the craziness [of modeling], I can always find the calm in the storm.”

On her desire to see curvier models in print: My dream is to see a lot more female shapes in ad campaigns when I look through magazines…my friend was working with Crystal Renn and said she thinks she’s only got a 38-inch hip. Karl Lagerfeld said he was going to embrace her womanly shape and then he just put her face on the ad campaign. Girls are starting to have tits in pictures, but I think it still needs to be about the curve… Real women have hips and an arse, yet loads of models in shows seem to have neither.”

On her style: “Most of my wardrobe is taken up by white floaty or long floral dresses. I like to dress like a fairy and a doll quite a lot, but I do like wearing black too. I don’t think I have a particular style, I think I go for a lot of different things.”

This is a start in the counterfeiting fight. But next time, the Feds need to focus on a more fashion savvy locale.

At Drive In Studio‘s cool garage show space last night, models lined the floor donning Tommy’s new spring collection. Earth tones and pastels ruled the night.

Tommy’s typical classic looks filled the collection, including bright beachwear and breezy urban apparel. I’m happy to see a little less plaid and a few more stripes. Well done, Mr. Hilfiger!

“It’s all shirtdresses of different fabrics, lengths and cuts,” Hilfiger said, who plans to launch the line, Nahm, for fall 2011 and manufacture in New York.

I’m curious to see what fun fabrics they’re going to choose for the collection. Oh, and I forgot to tell you at your show, but I love the Ohio State shirt Nary!

Last week, Tommy Hilfiger announced the launch of Tommy, a new men’s
and women’s lifestyle collection for “twenty somethings,” and on Friday,
a slew of stylish New Yorkers descended upon The Gladstone Hotel to
receive a first look at Tommy’s Holiday 2010 collection. The aim of the
Tommy brand is to give Hilfiger’s preppy aesthetic a “fresh, young,
cool” twist.

This means washed tailored jackets, fitted blazers, denim
boyfriend shirts, slouchy sweaters, cropped biker boots, sequined shorts
and a smattering of prints. All in all, the collection is a bright mix
of preppy and grunge.

Tommy launches in October. To start, Tommy will be sold exclusively
in Canada, with a possible wider rollout to follow. Prices for Tommy
start at $24 for knits, $79 for denim and $139 for outerwear.

Vera Wang on Tommy Hilfiger: “Tommy has an all-American design sensibility. He isn’t afraid of sporty, simple, and clean. Our relationship has been one of encouragement and support. He interviewed me a long time ago for Tommy Hilfiger women’s fashion and didn’t hire me, and we’ve been friends ever since.”

It’s taken me a while to make a decision about the denim on denim look, but after seeing it hit the streets in such variety, my verdict is in: two thumbs up! Fear not, I’m not talking about the Americana, Tommy Hilfiger blue-jean material, but the more current raw, light-washed and distressed denim. What I love about the denim on denim trend is its simplicity, its ability to be mixed and matched and its blank-slate, “please enhance me” appeal. Really, the possibilities are endless. I love the raw denims with a bow-tie, suit-coat and oxfords for a more formal, menswear look, just as I love the cutesy, springtime vibe a gal can get from wearing lighter denims with a pair of wedge heels and a big, floppy hat. For the time being, i’d ixnay on the boots…don’t want to look like cowboy, now do we?
