CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, Vogue‘s Anna Wintour, Vanity Fair‘s Graydon Carter and a host of industry professionals including Calvin Klein‘s Francisco Costa, Tory Burch, Zac Posen, Theory’s Andrew Rosen, Nanette Lepore, Derek Lam and Joseph Altuzarra joined Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) at a breakfast yesterday to outline the initiative.

“This is such an opportunity for all of us — as an industry, as New Yorkers, as people who do an extraordinary job in creating economic growth — to join with the NRDC to take on this mission, which I think is unprecedented, and really herald a new era of what social change can be done by industry,” Gillibrand said.

One of Clean by Design’s goals is to get designers, retailers and brands to better understand their chain of supply and promote factory improvements. Those in attendance were shown a video depicting a Chinese river polluted by dyes with the statement that next season’s colors will be dictated by the colors of China’s rivers.

“We have found opportunities to reduce impact, using means that actually save the factories money, with process efficiency improvements that win-win, so to speak,” said Linda Greer, director of NRDC’s health and environment program. “The era of operating without knowledge of your factories abroad is ending, and the curtain is rising above the sorts of problems and aspirations that we have abroad.”

Anna Carter, a trustee of the NRDC, added, “It takes as much as 200 tons of water to produce 1 ton of fabric. Since less than 1 percent of the world’s water is drinkable, and our demand for it is on track to double over the next 40 years, this is an issue we need to address. We would be much more effective if we address it together.”

To that end, the NRDC developed its 10 Best Practices, low-cost solutions to reduce water, electricity and energy usage; from leak detection and maintenance in factories to recovering heat from smoke stacks. For every ton of fabric produced, these 10 practices can cut water usage by up to 23% and fuel usage by up to 32%.

PPR and one of its holdings Stella McCartney have already signed on to Clean by Design, though McCartney totally phoned it in; literally.  While she couldn’t make the breakfast, she sent along a video acknowledging her support. [WWD, sub req'd]

Over 75 designers including CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Robert Geller, Betsey Johnson, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch and recent CFDA womenswear designer of the year nominee The Row have contributed customized totes, retailing for $200 on eBay.

If that’s a little out of your price range, basic limited edition totes in four styles are also available for $45.

According to eBay’s senior vice president of global communications, Alan Marks, the demand was so great for the fashion forward totes they “doubled the size of the collection in addition to offering more styles.”

His sense of mixing metals is a trend that has cropped up ever more since his rise to prominence; to him it’s a puzzle. He has sacrificed valuable anqtiues to his art, and keeps every bit that crosses his table, for it could be the part that completes the next piece. We caught up with Justin about his craft and what he’s digging now, when he’s not busy with his new gig as Director of Jewelry Design for Tory Burch.

What is your favorite stone to work with at the moment?  

Pale Quartz, pink, yellow, smoke, blue, I am really into pastel colors at the moment, but not in a flat lacquered way.  I want the feeling of citrus without the fruit!

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever found materials?  

Hunting store.  It was in the backwoods and when I told the shop keep that I wanted the taxidermy bunny masks for fashion not fly fishing, I know I herd some rifles click.

What’s the longest you’ve worked on one piece and why? 

About about 150 hours. I wanted it to be REALLY BIG.

Tell me about your most thrilling sale.

First, as an artist, it is always thrilling to make a sale.  Celebrities and Real People are equal in my eyes.  Royalty however, one can always get excited about.  I sold some earrings once, then a year later I got a call that Her MajestyQueen Noor of Jordan lost one of her favorite earrings and could it be replaced.  I was happy to remake the earring, and she sent me several images of her wearing them on her Diplomatic tours.  It felt good!

I can’t help you get that full bear beard, but I can help you reel in the real fishtail. Now, if you’re wearing Tory Burch flats, get out of my face. Thank you.

Wintour and Vogue have reportedly been “instrumental” in coercing assembling the 22 designers, including Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Alexander Wang, Tracy Reese, Joseph Altuzarra, Rachel Roy, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone and Jason Wu. Wary of alienating Republican voters from their brands, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton initially nixed their labels from participating in Runway to Win, but Marc Jacobs — of which LVMH owns a majority stake — designed his T-shirt anyway, “following pressure from the magazine,” according to WWD.

On the other hand, Donna Karan, also owned by LVMH, did not bow to Wintour and is therefore not participating in the fundraising effort. And therefore won’t be seen in Vogue anytime soon…Kidding!…Not really.

Runway to Win’s e-commerce site, runwaytowin.com, officially launches on Thursday, but Wintour’s re-election campaign is not stopping there. She will also co-host an Obama fundraiser with actress Scarlett Johansson in February — which I’m taking as a sign that ScarJo will be on the cover around that time. See, kids, and you thought fashion and politics had nothing in common. They both require a steely nerve, a willingness to compromise and the ability to turn a blind eye to corruption. Having mastered the art of social media — they’re #1 on Facebook with nearly 9 million “Likes” and #2 on Twitter — Burberry continues to find innovative ways to engage consumers such as a live-streaming Tweetwalk, where looks from London Fashion Week were Tweeted before they hit the runway. They also scored well in e-commerce and mobile commerce thanks to its global site relaunch, landing the over 150-year-old British label the top spot on the L2 index and the official label of “Genius.”

Kate Spade was a newcomer to the index but their blend of smart e-commerce and a strong mobile and social presence skyrocketed the brand to the #2 spot. Storied houses Chanel and Christian Dior, on the other hand, seem to be resting on their luxury laurels earning only “Average” L2 IQs.

Prada and Hermès started running with the bad girls in school, smoking in the bathroom and dating college boys instead of working on their social media and as a result their IQs plummeted from “Gifted” in 2009 to “Challenged” in 2011. And to make matters worse, Prada was cited as the “biggest digital disappointment in luxury.” Yikes, wait til your father hears about this….

But in their defense, Europe might just have a harder learning curve. Ten of the top fifteen brands in the L2 index were American and on average American brands have a higher digital IQ than their Euro counterparts. Finally, somewhere the U.S. excels in something besides obesity and sluttiness.

Vera Wang in Vera Wang – Vera, Vera, Vera. While I love a cowl neck, this look makes Morticia Addams look like Patricia Goddamn Field. Where’s the color? Where’s the fun? I would’ve taken a beading wedding gown over this funereal frump any day of the week.

Tory Burch in Tory Burch — You can try to dress up a burlap sack as much as possible, but then it’s just a burlap sack with some awful polka dots and some even more awful ill-placed beads. Or bottlecaps. What are those actually?

Sessilee Lopez in Zac Posen — One question: why? An old lady dress on a stunning, young supermodel still looks like an old lady dress. And frankly, I doubt any dames of a certain age would be caught dead wearing this. It’s unflattering, there’s too much going on about the bodice and worst of all it looks cheap. FI's Sam Lim in Opening Ceremony's limited edition tee

Opening Ceremony’s Carol Lim and Humberto Leon along with actress Rinku Kikuchi and former Angelina Jolie scissor sister, Jenny Shimizu are offering a limited edition T-shirt. The shirts are $30 and all proceeds go to the American Red Cross.

In collaboration with artist Dean Landry, Anna Sui has created the “Japan We’re All in This Together” tee for men (in black) and women (in lavender). Both sell for $20 each and will begin shipping April 15th. All proceeds go to Japan Relief Effort.

Rebecca Minkoff will donate $100 from each sale of their red handbags to the Red Cross while deciding on a “larger initiative.” The bags range form $295 to $495.

For the Brits, Simeon Farrar is giving away a free Kate Mouse T-shirt if you donate at least £20 to Save the Children by the end of March. To put this into context, there’s been a 300 person waiting list for the tee since December.

Tory Burch‘s Japan Relief T-shirt retails for $29 with all proceeds going to the Red Cross through Sept. 15th.

Barbie, much like a lot of 50 year olds with money in the bank, has been going through a major make-over. She’s obviously had work done and is now attempting to hit the runway. Demi Moore called, Barbie, she wants her gimmick back.

Apparently, Barbie is all dolled up to celebrate the launch of her Little Black Dress collection and raise a little money for the CFDA scholarship program. She’ll be sporting a couple of exclusive accessories and fashion designs from Isaac Mizrahi, Kate Spade’s Deborah Lloyd, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy and Monica Botkier. The dolls hit eBay on January 28th.

VILLAGE CARE OF NEW YORK’S 8th ANNUAL “TULIPS & PANSIES – THE HEADDRESS AFFAIR” will be on Thursday, May 14, and I can’t tell you how excited both Daniel and I are. We had such a great time last year (photos above). And this years designers are top tier: Tory Burch, Chado Ralph Rucci, Pamella Roland, Cynthia Steffe, Lilly Pulitzer, Alvin Valley, Thierry Mugler, Zang Toi, Michael Vollbracht, b.michael and others.

Each designer will be paired with NYC’s finest floral designers including Preston Bailey, L’Olivier, Ovando and Zezé in order to create a high-fashion runway show of elaborate floral headdresses made entirely from living plants and fresh cut flowers. The event, which raises funds for Village Care of New York, a non-profit organization providing vital health care programs to people living with HIV/AIDS, is Chaired by Jack Curry, Editor of USA Weekend and TV Guide and Kelly Cutrone, Founder of People’s Revolution.

Ever have one of those friends that will ditch you when they get invited to a better party? Well Scoop doesn’t have just one of those “friends,” they have four. It all started when the top selling designer Diane Von Furstenberg decided to open her own shop across from the Meatpacking District location in March of 2007. After Diane hit the ground running, Tory Burch became the best selling label at Scoop with her logo flats and cardigan sweaters. I guess it doesn’t matter how much business Scoop did for Miss. Burch because she, too, decided to pack up and open her own place across from the Washington and W. 12th street location. If that wasn’t bad enough, Vince and Paige Jeans are opening shop right around the corner from other New York Scoop stores. 

Granted, I’m not the biggest fan of Scoop, but I would hate to see a store that so many people love, go belly up because designers don’t want to sell there anymore. I get it, times are tough, but we’ve got to give one another a break every now and then.

Anyone remember the “Feed Kate Moss” campaign? I do. About sixteen years ago, when pre pregnant Kate, the original waif, starred as a CK model, some journos planted a spoof in papers with her photo, asking for donations, as in “Feed the Children” infomercials.

Fast forward, this evening and a panel of fashion designers including Donna Karan, Nicole Miller, Doo-Ri Chung, fugly shoe designer Tory Burch, and Francisco Costa — the healthier modern Calvin Klein — will meet a MIlk Studios in the West Village to discuss model health, how to encourage these gals to fatten up! Hmmmn, maybe it’s me, but who are we kidding?

Think of the upwardly mobile model rush. To dress up in gorgeous clothes, skinny enough to project a long lean line underneath, pliable enough to morph into positions, then to go home with a sack of chic rags. To wind down with some champagne post shoot, a few tapas here and there, a shower, a party, so much love from so many friends, admirers offering lines of coke. To be buzzed, warm, fizzy like fresh soda poured. To be so ecstatic that all you want to do is dance the night away, and you do. Maybe someone will love you till morning. Maybe someone won’t, but tomorrow’s a new adventure, a plane trip, a beach, a drug rush of attention.

Tory Burch has just hired Surface 2 Air to bring a fresh vibe to her collection. The Paris-based label will be moving into Burch’s studio and will be her official downtown “guru”.

This news is surprisingly exciting to me. The Misshapes Leigh Lezark is a Tory fan and other scenesters have been seen rocking her over hyped looks. Hopefully, the brand will bring some real cool to Upper East Soccer Mommies and Hampton House Wives.
