What advice do you have for all the young designers showing at Lincoln Center this year? 

“Necessity is the mother of all invention.  Young designers are possibly more creative because they have to be. Don’t necessarily expect to come and show your first season at Lincoln Center, that is not what it is about. You’re going to show at a friend of your mum’s house sitting on folding chairs.”

What do you think are some predominant trends coming up this season?

“I think we’re going to carry on seeing a lot of color.  I do feel this sort of 30′s/70′s thing will continue.  A lot of color and a lot of print, it will be quite nice”

Do you have any tips on day-to-night dressing?

“I actually have some great tips on nigh to day dressing.  I used to work at Interview magazine and I remember hearing about all the socialites that would go out all night and come straight to work, be at the magazine all day, have a disco nap, get changed and go out all over again.  Therefore, instead of wearing your day clothes and throwing on a red lip and a heel, why don’t you wear your evening clothes, and wear something that will make it work.”

What are some of those pieces? 

“You can throw on a heather grey sweatshirt or a wacky clunky shoe or Converse.  Dress down an evening gown, that’d be my choice.”

Do you have any transitional weather tips? 

“In New York, your clothes have to go a long distance.  We’re very hard on our clothes, we are in and out of taxis, on subways, it is very hot, very cold, and it rains cats and dogs.  Always pack flats and a tiny little fold up umbrella in your bag, and check the weather before you go out.”

“The bombshell mantra is about feeling confident and boosting your self esteem.  This year, Victoria’s Secret made a suit that adds two cup sizes, giving you instant sexiness. The suit makes you look gorgeous and feel sexy on the beach– its is instant confidence!  Being a bombshell is about being yourself and embracing your looks and what makes you feel sexy.  When you are yourself, you are a total bombshell.”

This week’s trend is Neon Lights. This translates into big and bold colors all over the place.

The designer inspiration comes from Jil Sander‘s Spring/Summer 2011 men collection which features bright neons on everything from sweaters,  to trousers, and outerwear.

For your tops look no further than a PS by Paul Smith crew neck. If you need a lower price point than an bright green H&M button down shirt will do the trick.

Since you can’t walk out pants less this spring it’s only right that you go bright on your bottom. You can get some great trousers and shorts from Diesel. If you’re going to take a dip in the water or just want to look good on the beach or poolside an Orlebar Brown swimsuit will help you out.

The biggest way to transform style is through accessories. This being said you can brighten up a rather dark outfit with the following accouterments.  You can throw own a classic pair of Ray-Bans with a pop or even a Nixon watch. To top everything off you can splurge on a pair of Prada Creepers.

LOOK THREE: Abstract Python Warrior

The Shoulder Piece: Fannie Schiavoni, $825

This look began with my love of the chain mail shoulder piece. The metal mesh moves like water in my hand and makes me feel invincible when strapped around my body. Its creator Fannie Schiavoni hand makes each piece in her studion in London, and keeps the color of her materials muted so that she can focus purely on the shape and clean lines. She has named this collection “Lucy in the Sky”, evoking a psychedelic yet other worldly feeling.

The (non) Body Suit: Calla Paris, Leggings, $174, Tank, $98

My first instinct to match the brilliance of the shoulder scene-stealer was an abstract printed dress by Calla Paris. Calla Haynes is a Canadian-born, Paris based designer with a five-year training history with Olivier Theyskens and a serious knack for tight prints. Début had the pattern in a fierce little itty bitty dress (which I spotted first). That mini thing, which being one of the only pieces left over from Fall 2010, did not come in my size, and thus did not even contain half of one of my boob. But I needed an outfit to form the foundation of that glorious shoulder piece. So it occurred to me to try the olive printed stirrup tights with the matching tank. Alone and together I was in love. The leggings have a nearly 3-inch sturdy black elastic waistband that hugs and sucks in as the tank tucks in to form a bodysuit.

The Skirt: Whit, $225

A bodysuit is so right for so many reasons. However, it didn’t feel 100% right at the moment; there had to be another layer, if not to cover more stunning items in Début, then to cover some of my winter weight… With that came this military green scoop pocket skirt by Whit, a line launched by Phoenix native Whitney Pozgay. With a studio Brooklyn and experience with Kate Spade, Three Asfour and Steven Alan, she has created a line founded in imagery as diverse as Keith Haring and ice pops.

How do you feel about the bodysuit? Would you wear this look?

SL:  The wide legged trousers! The long skirts! These beautiful trends are finally back, but I’m barely breaching 5 feet tall and often look completely overwhelmed.  What is a girl to do?

GB:  Keep it tonal. Wear long wisely.  As soon as you start to break up the silhouette, it can be really difficult. There’s nothing sweeter than a girl in a gorgeous long skirt with a simple fitted top, like Lanvin showed, or a summer sun dress with flat shoes.  Come winter, it can look a bit like you are dusting the floor with your skirt and I think I would just advise caution in how you wear it.  For example, my team are wearing very slim silhouettes with wedge shoes that anchor the look to the ground.

SL: We also try to hide our short stature by wearing giant shoes.  What do you think about the new flat-platform look?

GB:  My girls are already wearing it.  It is a new way of moving on from the wedge. I have huge samurong wedges which i’ve been wearing a lot but i’m feeling for a daintier shoe.  I like to run so i kind of welcome the idea of having a more refined, elegant heel seems so right for right now.

The Wall Street Journal will start to look more like its mainstream rival The New York Times on Dec. 4 when it puts out the first issue of WSJ., its weekend lifestyle magazine supplement, edited by Deborah Needleman.

WSJ. has covered the intersection of fashion and business since it launched two years ago. But the first issue of Needleman, the former chief editor of Domino who also heads up Off Duty, the Journal’s new weekend lifestyle section, broadens the fashion coverage to help deepen the magazine’s appeal with female readers and fashion advertisers.

“Part of what we’re doing is creating a woman-friendly place,” Needleman explained. “What I’m trying to do in every issue is a women’s fashion story and a men’s fashion story, and I want to try to do a couple’s fashion story. This reader is not buying fashion magazines. So I feel like there’s a real opportunity here.”

It could be a risky move, given the female Journal reader isn’t fashion-obsessed. And fashion advertisers already have a glut of glossies to run in. (credit: mediaweek.com)

While perusing the Evans UK website the other day, I saw some very interesting boots that were definitely inspired by the trends of the upcoming fall. What makes these boots so trendy, might you ask? Good morning folks for the next few days I, Glen Johnson, of Full Figure Plus will be filling in for the Curvy Fashionista. Today we are going to start with something I think will be a breath of fresh air in the plus-size fashion world! Designer Toula and retailer Saks have teamed up to debut a high end collection of clothes with sizes 14-24 in mind.

Women’s apparel manufacturer Toula will debut Fall 2010 at retailer Saks Fifth Avenue with an exclusive collection sold through their New York flagship store on Fifth Avenue.

“We’re excited to expand our reach through this partnership and reach a much larger, cosmopolitan audience,” explained Steven Wang, co-owner of the label. “Toula has been available for decades at smaller boutiques, but this distinctive line sold at Saks will reach an entirely new market.”

Saks’ line will be available in plus sizes (14-24), a niche Toula has perfected through years of experience in outfitting plus size women. Forgiving wool and rayon fiber blends lend themselves to curvier women’s shapes and can even be blocked up or down a size to accommodate body fluctuations. The pieces enhance a woman’s natural silhouette with flattering cuts and elegant, understated detailing. The wrinkle-resistant fabrics are ideal for the traveling professional woman with refined taste. The collection is comprised of separates that can be combined to create complete looks and priced at $1200 to $1600 for an ensemble.

Toula has designed and produced versatile and timeless women’s knitwear since 1986.  Each collection provides ideal ingredients for a distinct and unforgettable look. With the wardrobe building concept in mind Toula offers women value that allows the silhouettes to be worn season after season. Braided hairstyles have been very hot on the runways in 2009 and 2010, with perhaps the most noted users of this trend being Alexander Wang and Miuccia Prada. While the loose side braid and the fish plait have been most prominent, an evening look that has popped up occasionally is the so-called milkmaid style, with braids tucked up over the crown of the head. The message is clear: fashion accessories definitely include your hairstyle!

We first saw this braided look on celebrities in 2007, when Sienna Miller wore the style with a draped, slightly off-shoulder gown by the fashion designers Marchesa at the Golden Globe Awards, showing that it can be done elegantly. There are several things to keep in mind if you attempt this style.

First, you either need to have long hair, or you need a hair piece that very closely matches your hair color. Second, even with a formal outfit, this hairstyle shouldn’t look too “done.” A few wisps or chunks of hair set free will keep the style from being too severe.

In general, the less oval and more angular your face, the more wispy and “undone” you should aim for with milkmaid braids. We’ve recently seen this look on Zoe Saldana and Busy Phillips, both of whom wisely kept the style from being too uptight and fussy.

The easiest way to acquire this look is with a braided headband (Revlon and many other companies make them) worn with hair in a low, slightly disheveled chignon. Braids look like they’re going to continue to be fashion news for at least a few seasons to come, so give it a try! The great thing is, these days, you don’t even need super-long hair to do it.

It’s almost Fall 09, so FI is wondering what everyone is starting to see in stores or on the streets as far as trends that we might have missed on the runways. Let us know.

Armored accessories have been all over the place lately, and it’s going to get heavier as fall comes. I absolutely love this metal vest, and it’s totally transferrable from runway to every day. This would look awesome for a night out! (And for guys or girls)

Applying False Eyelashes
1. Apply Lash Repair, $22 on lashes. When it dries, use Eyelash Curler, $18 and Mascara Basic, $27.50 for a natural look.
2. Using the Slant Tweezers, $32.00, pick the base of the lashes up gently along the edge.
3. Make sure that the lashes are flexible enough to fit the shape of the eyes. Using fingertips, bend the false eyelashes into a U shape.
4. Be sure to test the length and desired position of false lashes before gluing them on to make sure the width matches the width of your eye. Trim the outer edge with scissors if the lashes are too long.
5. Place a drop of Eyelash Adhesive, $8.50 on the back of your hand. Then dip a cotton swab into the adhesive base and transfer it carefully to the base of the lashes.
6. Apply the false lashes close to the eye base and lay them along the lash line starting from the center, then the inner corner, and to the outer corner.

But I find it a tad pretentious when people wear them indoors for more than 15 minutes, (just in case they forget to remove them). Even more so when you are having a conversation with a person and they fail to remove their unnecessary eye-wear out of respect. What ever happened to eye contact!?

This could just be a phase, possibly a disease… an ego disease, that is. Whatever it may be let’s hope he doesn’t try to take credit for the popularity of sunglasses or even worse, create a label!

Trend forecasters are the Sylvia Browns of the fashion world, which means they are over paid, chain smoking mythomaniacs who garner huge amounts of praise and acclaim for deriving psychic-like predictions from their asses. Editors & designers (the kings and mostly queens of the fashion world) will pay thousands of dollars for a sampling of what these soothsayers have to offer. “Cerelion is the new blue” or “Gaucho pants will be big for spring 2010″ are often seen as amazing feats of forecasting that are only privy to the ears of the highest bidders.

Once such information is collected by the royals, it is dispensed amongst the pheasant class fashionistas in the form of magazine articles and runway shows which encompass predicted color schemes and styles. These “trends” provide a uniform for fashion people who have no personal style and are unable to formulate their own original look. More importantly “trends” allow fashion people to criticize those who don’t follow them. Statements like “Wait, you seriously don’t own a pair of fuscia riding boots!?! Tragic.” and “I couldn’t live without my [insert seasonal must have here]. Oh, I’m sorry you didn’t pre-order one? How sad for you.” are common amongst the most trend obsessed fashion people.

When dealing with the trend dependent fashion person it’s always important to take note of their “stylish” look. Show that you are current on all seasonal trends by commenting on the colors and styles they are wearing. This will make the fashion person feel even more elite and will allow them to embrace your presence. If asked about your style, it is smart to say that it is based on a future trend or one from the runways of Europe or some obscure fashion week in Guam. Remember, anything you wear can be deemed a trend. The velour Juicy track suit you refuse to take off can be reinvented as “Hollywood reject chic from the runways of Berlin, Spring 2008″. The over-sized denim and striped shirt you’re addicted to can be “a recent look on the runways of Tibet called “Jersey Douchebag”. Upon hearing these descriptions the fashion person will instantaneously praise you for your trendsetting bravery and will even ask for the hotline number of your pay-per-minute trend psychic.
