After rising to prominence on the London music scene in the 60s as one half of Peter and Gordon, Peter Asher went on to manage Apple Records, produce all of James Taylor‘s multi-platinum records, and influence pop music from the inside. He also made besties with Twiggy and was roomies with Paul McCartney along the way. I caught up with him at his recording studio in Santa Monica when I was in LA. He told me how the London music scene shopped, why the Apple Boutique closed, and what fashion gem was hiding in Pete Townsend‘s basement.

You won’t read his full story in a book any time soon. He’s singing his tales through original music and photographs in intimate performances. He’s performing now through this weekend in San Francisco, and June 19-23 in New York City.

Now meet Peter Asher through a fashionable lens.

When you started performing as Peter and Gordon, was there a switch in your style?
I think even before at school, you wanted to look good at school. Where Gordon and I went to school, we were obliged to wear grey suits and white shirts. But the trick was to see how tightly you could taper your trousers before they complained.

Where were you shopping at that time?
The customized thing, we’d just go to the cheapest tailor we could find. Other than that we shopped on Carnaby Street. It was through The Beatles we met [their tailor] Dougie Millings who made our stage suits. He made their stage suits and we liked the way they looked. You’d use this shiny material called Tonic. Shiny and tight. Luckily we were young and thin then.

Between you and Gordon, was there one who took the forefront in deciding what should be worn on stage?
No, in the case of the stage suits, we’d go into Dougie Millings, and play with details. Lots of extra buttons, or double buttons, or extra buttons at the cuffs, or cuffs that folded back. Then the whole velvet thing, where you put the velvet on the collar, but then on the cuffs as well. The pockets were velvet. You’d sit there thinking up fancy details that Doug was very good at doing, just trying to make them as decorated as you could.

Were there any bands on the road that influenced your style?
I loved The Drifters and The Shirelles. Their whole choreography on stage was amazing. We never tried to copy them in any way, but I was certainly impressed by it.

Which designers were influencing the music scene at that time?
There was Biba, but I didn’t know Barbara Hulanicki until later. Mary Quant. Suddenly these people were big stars! And they weren’t just big names like Dior, a sort of god-like status. They were on the ground, same as we were. You would actually get to meet them. Of course Twiggy was at the height of all that. Whatever she wore immediately became cool, and she’s still going strong. Actually, Twiggy was then and still is one of my best friends.

Photo: Jane Asher and Paul McCartney

Now, about that famous flat in London you shared with Paul McCartney, as he dated your sister Jane…
It was a house actually. It would have been tricky if it were a flat, as there were a lot of us, in the sense that it was my parents, my youngest sister, and Jane and Paul [McCartney] and me. We had a house on Woodpall Street. Paul and I had the top floor.

Was there any clothes sharing going on in that house?
No. I don’t think so. I don’t remember Paul or I ever borrowing anything from each other. I think men don’t do that as much. Women just seem to do that more.

Though cross-sex sharing was already afoot, with the androgyny of Astrid Kirchherr and Stuart Sutcliffe.
Boys and girls were sharing clothes. Especially in stores like Granny takes a Trip, which was the cool shop at the time. There were clothes that weren’t specifically designated boys or girls, anybody could wear them. And certainly some of the really skinny guys would get away with wearing girls’ jackets. Marc Bolan would or Bowie would, and make them look really cool. I don’t think I ever really did.

Tell me about your involvement Apple Boutique that the Beatles started in 1967.
I didn’t have much to do with that, I was busy running the record company. It was all these people, [Dutch designers] Simon [Postuma] and Marijke [Koeger], who were sort of in charge of it. There were no clothes there I particularly fell in love with. Different divisions of Apple that stayed a bit separate. I think that was one of the problems at the end that it was venturing into all these areas that they weren’t personally expert in. So some of it did go downhill. And I missed the day that they closed it and gave all the clothes away. People were grabbing stuff feverishly.

After mod faded away, where was the hippie place to shop?
Pete Townsend used to have a couple of women who lived in his basement who made really cool shirts that we all used to go to. He married one of them, I think. But they would make very exotic shirts out of flowery material. And they would make them any way you wanted them, frilly cuffs and all the extras.

Who are your favorite designers to wear now?
Etro. I could spend a million dollars in Etro easily. Every time they send the catalog there’s about half the things in there that I like. I wear quite flashy, or whatever you call it, stuff. I like this shirt, it’s rather Etro-ish but it’s by Robert Graham.

As a producer, have you guided your artists to dress any differently, or better
I don’t think as a manager I’ve ever played a role in an artist’s fashion sense. James [Taylor] very much had his own look. Though he dresses very well, you never think of him as a fashion plate in that sense. He doesn’t go for the avant gard. Though he does like Issey Miyake, but that’s not through any influence of mine. And the same with Linda Rondstadt. She always looked fabulous, but those were her choices, not mine.

What's the most fashion forward thing you're seeing today?
A lot of the black stuff that I wouldn’t necessarily wear, some of it’s unbelievably cool. Some of the super exaggerated stuff I’d certainly look ridiculous in it. I mean, as it is some of the white kids who wear it tend to look a bit ridiculous. Somehow, African Americans manage to carry it off like it was meant, and on white kids it looks like dressing up. Certainly, black fashion now is ahead of the game.

Models are great at a lot of things: walking, for instance. Standing very still for long periods of time. Finding their light. Finding coke in the middle of the night when seemingly no one is around. And then there are some models who are actually great at other things, like music. But for some, the spirit is willing but the talent is lacking. These 10 professional stunners have all taken a stab at the music industry, but even the best of ‘em can fall flat on their face…or ass.

Abbey Lee Kershaw - member of Our Mountain

Kershaw plays tambourine in Our Mountain and allegedly also contributes keys and vocals. The band released theirdebut single "Wooden Hearts" in 2011 and appeared in Pierre Balmain's spring 2012 fashion film directed by Inez and Vinoodh.

Agyness Deyn - featured on "Who" by Five O'Clock Heroes

The single wasn't very well received, to say the least -- though NME said it succinctly enough: "she sings on this and it’s shit." -- and peaked at #109 on the UK charts. But Deyn made somewhat of a comeback, providing the opening monologue to Rihanna's "We Found Love" video.

Baptiste Giabiconi - "One Night in Paradise" (2012)

I guess we can consider Baptiste's brief dalliance with Katy Perry as a fact-finding mission as the male super is determined to get his music career off the ground. But while the video for the midtempo ballad "One Night in Paradise" -- off his debut album Oxygen -- has over 2 million views, it lacks the pizzazz of his magnum opus, "Showtime."

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy - Quelqu'un m'a dit (Someone Told Me) (2003)

Before she became the First Lady of France, but after she had hung up her runway heels for good, Carla Bruni released Quelqu'un m'a dit. A huge hit in France where it debuted at number one and spent 37 non-consecutive weeks on the charts, "Le plus beau du quartier" was used in a 2006 H&M commercial and the title track appears on the soundtrack of (500) Days of Summer.

Karen Elson - The Ghost Who Walks (2010)

Aside from having married -- and divorcing -- rock royalty in the form of Jack White, Elson has her own musical credentials on which to stand. A founding member of New York-based cabaret act The Citizen's Band, Elson released her White-produced solo album in 2010, The Ghost Who Walks, to positive reviews. The album's title track was released as a single and the accompanying video was also directed by White.

Milla Jovovich - The Divine Comedy (1994)

Though best known today as an "actress," Jovovich was already a model veteran when she released her critically-acclaimed debut album in 1994. It didn't do so well commercially, but Jovovich continues to contribute songs to the soundtracks of her own films as well as others, such as 2003's Underworld.

Naomi Campbell - babywoman (1994)

Naomi made her music video debut in 1978 when she appeared in the clip for Bob Marley's "Is This Love." She went on to appear in videos for Culture Club, Madonna, Michael Jackson and most famously George Michael. So naturally she decided to try her hand at a music career of her own with the critical and commercial failure, the horribly-titled babywoman. Peaking at #75 in her native UK, the album was a hit in Japan and went on to sell a million copies worldwide, producing the single and video "Love and Tears."

Nick Kamen - "Each Time You Break My Heart" (1986)

Famous for stripping down to his undies in a classic Levi's ad in 1985, Kamen had a top 5 UK hit with "Each Time You Break My Heart," written and produced by Madonna and her frequent collaborator Stephen Bray. I'm sure the Material Girl's decision to get involved had nothing to do with the undies. What was inside of them, however...

Twiggy

Twiggy has been steadily releasing albums since the 70s after she officially retired from modeling following an iconic four-year run. She released her latest album, Romantically Yours in 2011, a collection of her favorite tunes and standards such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered."

Tyra Banks - "Shake Ya Body" (2004)

Banks -- a jill of many trades and a Harvard grad to boot -- couldn't quite master popstardom, though she tried her damndest with the Beyoncé-aping "Shake Ya Body." She also recorded a single with Kobe Bryant, "K.O.B.E.," which besides being an embarrassment for everyone involved, proved that not even two superstars can make one serviceable hit.

The 90s began with the biggest names in the business and then they were all but wiped out when 15 year old Kate Moss slouched onto the scene. Like Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree (who bears a striking resemblance to Kate) before her, Kate ushered in a new body image for women to aspire to. That image was the definitive shape for the past two decades and only now are we seeing curves reappear on the runway and in advertising. We’re parking this model mobile in the here and now!

Stephanie Seymour (July 23, 1968) As a muse for the late Richard Avedon, Stephanie Seymour created some of the best fashion photographs of the 90s, then upped the iconic ante when she strolled down the aisle as Axl Rose‘s bride (the two were dating at the time) in Guns and Roses‘ classic “November Rain” video. Though supermodels appearing in music videos was nothing new in 1992, very few looked as perfect as Seymour in that epic wedding dress. Perhaps a little too rock & roll for a royal wedding, but I would at least consider it, Kate Middleton.

Claudia Schiffer (Aug. 25, 1970) Reminiscent of a young Bridget Bardot, Claudia Schiffer’s sultry good looks catapulted her to supermodeldom in the early 90s. Though she made a comeback in a series of gorgeous ads for Salvatore Ferragamo in 2007, don’t expect to see Schiffer on a runway anytime soon; the German stunner maintains that she’s “very shy.” I’m the same way until I get a little liquor in me, hence, we just need to booze up Claudia and throw her — heels first — onto that catwalk. ASAP.

Heidi Klum (June 1, 1973) The ultimate Victoria’s Secret Angel, Klum hung up her wings for good in 2010 to focus on her thriving businesses: in addition to producing the Peabody Award-winning Project Runway (yeah, Heidi Klum has a Peabody), Klum has tried her hand at design, acting, painting not to mention re-populating the world with the help of her virile husband Seal…seriously, Heidi’s been pregnant nonstop for like the past ten years. I’m just going to say it, someone needs to separate those two.

Kate Moss (Jan. 16 1974) The kittenish face of “Heroin Chic,” Kate Moss’ arrival in 1990 sparked a sweeping change in the world of modeling. The glamazons of the 80s and early 90s now seemed outdated compared to the 5’7 Moss when she appeared in The Face magazine, shot by the late Corrine Day. Notoriously private — she rarely gives interviews — Kate Moss is still the most ubiquitous face in modeling of the past twenty years. As a regular in ad campaigns and a favorite muse for many photographers, Moss also practically owns the cover of British Vogue. Despite her amazing career, Kate has had her share of ups and downs…both fueled heavily by cocaine.

Photo: Harper's Bazaar

Tyra Banks (Dec. 4, 1973) Tyra Banks started off a rail-thin high fashion model before morphing into a voluptuous swimsuit cover girl, then a Victoria’s Secret Angel, then a fat-ass Emmy-winning talk show host and the professional smizer/creator of the now international Top Model series; in short, she is the ultimate model as mogul. And while I and a generation of other girls have learned everything we know about modeling from Ms. Banks (admittedly it took me a while to figure out how to find my light), she still has a few tricks up her sleeve (or in this case, turban), such as this shot from Vogue Italia’s iconic “Black Issue.”

Gisele (July 20, 1980) The last of the true supermodels, Gisele came along during the wave of Brazilian bombshells in the late 90s. With her athletic body and distinctive horse trot, she’s stayed at the top of the model heap for the past ten years, earning the one-name recognition to which all supers are entitled. Though there are several heirs to the throne (Karlie Kloss, Chanel Iman, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Agyness Deyn, Anja Rubik, Jessica Stam, the list goes on and on…), the queen is not abdicating anytime soon.

The supermodel is that most rare of species: the working model who transcends the runway or the pages of magazines and catalogs to become a part of the popular culture. An ageless beauty whose style and personality make up for any shortcomings in talent, or sanity, or choice in men. I was going to create a Top 10 list of the greatest supers, but then I got to thinking, ‘Hey, Lady (that’s what I call my inner self), everyone knows Naomi, Kate, Christy, Linda and Cindy. But what about the ladies of yore; those catwalk pioneers who paved the way in false eyelashes and broken champagne bottles for the supermodels of today?’ So I dove into the past 50 years of modeling and came out dragging the 25 muses who best defined what it meant to be a supermodel. Grace, beauty, versatility, influence and overall fierceness. Let’s start in the swinging 60s!

Wilhelmina Cooper (1939-1980) Before starting her own modeling agency in 1967 (yes, that Wilhelmina), the Dutch-born Cooper appeared on some 300 magazine covers, and still holds the record for most covers of American Vogue: 27. Though Gwyneth Paltrow is slowly sneaking up on her.

Photo: The Fashion Spot

Veruschka (May 14, 1939) The Countess Vera Gottliebe Anna von Lehndorff was forever immortalized in Michelangelo Antonioni‘s 1966 classic Blow Up, writhing around on the floor, turning, giving and generally destroying everything in the room. At 6’1 with size 13 feet, some might say she was tranny…”some” like me. Either way, before Lidna refused to get out of bed for $10,000, Veruschka was making that in a day. Go. Head. Tranny.

Jean Shrimpton (Nov. 7, 1942) Shrimpton was a sensation almost immediately when she started modeling in 1960 and is perhaps the world’s first supermodel, despite Janice Dickinson‘s drunken claim to the title. One of the most iconic faces and bodies of the 1960s (her slim figure earned her the nickname “The Shrimp”) Jean caused a stir in 1965 when she wore a mini-dress on Victoria Derby Day in Melbourne. It was so easy to cause a stir back then; now someone has to smuggle blood diamonds just to get some attention around here.

Naomi Sims (1948-2009) Before there was Naomi, there was Naomi. The first black supermodel, Naomi Sims worked overtime to break into what is still a largely racist industry. With a little help from Wilhelmina Cooper, Sims officially made it when she appeared in an AT&T commercial in 1968 wearing a Bill Blass ensemble. And I bet she never threw her phone at anyone…no, she probably did.

Photo: Life

Twiggy (Sept. 19, 1949) A boyishly short haircut in 1966 shot Leslie Hornby to superstardom as the international supermodel, Twiggy. At 5’6 and only 91 lbs at her discovery, she ushered in a new concept of female beauty and a whole rash of eating disorders. A tradition she continued as a judge on America’s Next Top Model.

Photo: Life

Peggy Moffitt (1939) My personal favorite 60s model, Peggy Moffitt was the original edgy girl. With her dark bangs and dark, Kohl-line eyes, she had one of the most distinctive looks of the decade. As a model, muse and eventual collaborator of Rudi Gernreich, she was immortalized when photographed in his topless bathing suit, the monokini, in 1964. How’s that for a stir, Shrimpton!

Donyale Luna (1945-1979) Peggy Ann Freeman escaped the slums of Detroit for the glitz and glamour of New York City. Here, as Donyale Luna, she was exotic and intriguing whereas in Detroit she “wasn’t considered beautiful or anything.” At 6’2, with her already striking features and ultramarine contacts, she was in high demand, scoring the cover of British Vogue in 1966. Donyale lived like, partied like and dated rock stars and died like one when she OD’d in 1979. Then 6 years later she was reincarnated as a sassy fashion blogger (Ahem!)

Penelope Tree (1950) The ultimate 60s “It” girl, Tree was the daughter of socialite Marietta Tree and British member of Parliament, Ronald Tree. When Diane Arbus took some photos of Penelope, her parents threatened to sue the photographer if the photos were ever published. Nonetheless, The Tree became rival to the Twig and inspired John Lennon, when asked to describe her in three words, to respond: “Hot hot hot! Smart smart smart!” Meanwhile, that’s either 2 or 6 words. Pull it together, Lennon.

What goes around comes around. And for Callula Lillibelle, it’s the 1960s for its fall 2011 collection. Designs like the red mini dress paired with lighter red tights and hat brings Twiggy to mind. The good thing about this collection is you don’t need to have a body like Twiggy to wear the clothing. The designers Melanie Fraser Hart and William Calvert kept in mind the everyday woman with basic pieces like skirts, tops, wide-leg pants, skinny pants and jackets. This line varies in prints, colors and materials, so it can become a staple in any woman’s wardrobe when playing around with the different pieces of clothing. This line takes the basic pieces to the next level with bold reds and yellows, tweed, hounds tooth and leopard prints.

Every woman can identify with this collection. Whether it’s the business casual woman going to the office dressed in wide-leg trousers and a matching jacket or the nerdy girl in oversized glasses paired in a leopard print dress with leopard print gloves, there is something in this collection for everyone.

Designer Amanda Elle wasn’t originally the type of girl who dreamt of becoming a fashion designer. But in 2009, Amanda launched a couture-inspired clothing label and then jewelry brand in New York City. Born, a natural artist, attending a specialized high school for the arts as well as NYU Steinhardt’s studio arts program, studying drawing, photography & sculpture, she brought her creative flare to the fashion world. From experimenting with her artistic talents, she created Lolli Popitt – a tastefully provocative and fantastically girlie line which brings you the joy of childhood dress-up in the realm of high fashion — and jewelry line Crystal Knuckles which already has loyal fans like Uma Thurman and Ke$ha. I was able to stop by Lolli Land, her Chelsea design studio, and talk to Amanda about the labels & her transcendence from sculptor to designer, what inspires her and what she has in store for Lolli Poppitt and Crystal Knuckles.

What made you want to start designing?
I never thought I would pursue a career in fashion. I originally did not have formal and technical training, I didn’t go to FIT. I went to school for fine arts, so I always assumed I’d do something in that realm but didn’t know what that would be. But then I started making my own clothing and got some really great feedback. My pieces developed quick notoriety because of their eccentricity and experimental appeal. It led me to start branding the label and making custom dresses. I realized my passion and that creating clothing was my art. It is what I wanted to do, but I did not want to work traditionally and looked at clothing as wearable art. Although I taught myself about the fashion industry as a business, as far as being a designer, I am first and foremost an artist before anything else – an artist with a fashion business.

Photographer, Robin Souma.
You started out reworking vintage clothing? Do you still take a lot of inspiration from vintage fashion for your line? Is the line still costumesque?

From what was once an ‘inspiration collection’ of crazy altered vintage clothing, a handful of these pieces were later reworked to create a RTW collection which is consistent with my conceptual ideas yet is more universally wearable. It creates an attainable outlet for girls to dress up in their everyday lives that I thought the fashion world was lacking. I am inspired by vintage but now use new fabrics that are re-orderable.

Photographer, Robin Souma. Model, Flor wearing the Doll Dress

In your bio, it says you pay a lot of attention to the “magic of childhood dress up.” Were you a super girly girl as a child or did you have some tomboy in you? Did you play with Barbies?

I did have Barbies, I loved them, but I wasn’t super girly. I always went against the grain. All of my girlfriends loved pink but I loved purple. But I like pink now and feel it can be extra cute and feminine, but in my collection, there are dark details too. I think it’s more about dress-up and reconnecting to the characters which inspire the dresses and the idea of adding fun to the wardrobe in everyday life. You can explore dress-up in a more grown-up and sophisticated way by wearing Lolli Popitt.

Photographer, Robin Souma. Model, Erin Lucas wearing the Eggplant Flora Fairy Dress

I love your housewife dresses! When you design your collections, do you keep specific people, like the housewife, in mind or are they imaginary, inspirational characters?

The housewife dress is just a satirical piece created for runway. These dresses are kind of poking at society’s idealistic housewife since they are really short & sexy.

What are some of your other styles?

The Lolli Cupcake dresses are the brand’s trademark. They’re girlie, fun and cute, which all describe the line. We call the feathered dresses “Fairy Dresses.” The psychedelic pieces are 60s mod styles and the “Doll” pieces often have a lot of lace and embellishments.

Cupcake Dress and Doll Dress

Lolli Popitt is for “daring who like to stand out in a crowd.” Could you walk me through the ideal day-in-the-life of a Lolli girl? What does she do? Who does she meet?

If wearing one of our couture pieces, a Lolli girl should probably by prepared to meet and talk to anyone because she is bound to get attention. These dresses are conversation pieces, so she must be daring to wear them. But when wearing our RTW pieces, a perfect Lolli candidate is confident and just wants to have fun with her wardrobe.

When I wear the crazier stuff, I think I kind of become a performance artist. I think the clothes can bring out a personality that you may not have known you had.

So, you don’t always have to be a fashion risk-taker to wear Lolli Popitt? Does the Lolli Girl ever dress down?

Although the line is risky and avant-garde, that is not our entire collection. The line IS wearable. The really crazy stuff is just an over-the-top and accentuated take on our conceptual ideas. But the garments are wearable. They can also be worn every day without the commitment to that non-stop attention that our couture yields.

Black chantilly lace Doll Dress

I noticed a lot of your designs feature inner-wear as outer-wear – corsets, bras, bustiers. What inspired you to focus on this trend for Lolli Popitt?

The feathered bras are technically lingerie, but you can wear them out. You can wear them alone with jeans or a skirt, but I think they look best accompanying something. They are fancy and functional. They can be worn underneath a button down (revealing the feathers) as well as over a slip with a skirt to make them fancier. Musicians have worn them to red carpet events and in their music videos.

The lace lingerie shorts were originally created to go under the dresses that we put down the runway, but we then realized that they compliment the clothing really well.

Photographer, Robin Souma. Model, Erin Lucas wearing Feather Fairy bra &Crystal Knuckles jewelry

Where do you find inspiration? Who are your style icons? What other designers and artists do you look up to?

I was inspired by performance artists like Leigh Bowery, who literally was his art. He dressed-up eccentrically every day for all to see. Joanna Frueh, an artist/writer who studied the correlation between femininity, sexuality and beauty in everyday life. Twiggy’s signature dresses have inspired my psychedelic pieces.

As for other fashion designers, I’m inspired by Alexander McQueen for his costumesque looks and use of feathers; Anna Sui for her doll-like, harajuku designs; and Zac Posen’s character collection.

Recently, I have been dressing musician, Neon Hitch, an incredibly unique performer whose daring and organic style embodies the ideals of both of my lines, especially the Crystal Knuckles jewelry.

My aunt, Carole Feuerman, a well-known photo-realist sculptor, is one of my biggest idols. Learning from her has helped me see how I could create a foundation to turn art into a business.

Psychedelic Mod shorts & cut out bra set

Your Crystal Knuckles jewelry line looks amazing. How did you get started designing jewelry and what is the inspiration behind the pieces?

I’ve always collected crystals. My aunt would give me a crystal whenever I saw her while growing up. My initial collection was started using those stones, the ones that I had from my aunt. I owned several over-sized rings which I loved and thought that using natural crystals to create jewelry would be a really unique idea. In fact, in gemology you’re supposed to have a crystal on you at all times because they are said to bring healing and protective powers. The rings will be featured on Ideeli.com and we are currently in contact with Henri Bendel, Barney’s & Scoop NYC. I will keep you posted on what’s to come!

Emma Watson is another starlet who’s following Twiggy’s footsteps and has chopped her hair off. Like, quite literally chopped it all off; there’s just a tiny bit of hair to frame her face, pixie style. I love it and I’d love to have the guts (and facial features) to do something like that.

With magazines and advertisements constantly in front of our eyes, we’re often confronted with the image of those picture perfect models. But when Twiggy’s Oil for Olay ads hit stands in Britain, there seemed to be quite an uproar about that picture perfect image. Lawmakers were concerned about the effect Twiggy’s photoshopped image could eventually have on young girls. Though this isn’t the first time Britain has been concerned with faux images, it seems as though this time they’re really making the effort to ban them.

While Chanel Iman, in her stunning Zac Posen dress, was a show stopping attendee, Shalom Harlow looked rather homeless and out of place in her crumpled, Gareth Pugh-ish garbage bag. Brooke Shields looked like a mermaid body builder. Agyness Deyn was an over-bronzed transvestite. Brooklyn Decker rocked out a Mary-Kate worthy outfit. All in all, the model fashion was skewed across the board. Tsk tsk…I expected big things from such fashion relatives.
