April has us heart deep in eco-month, and our soul feels great. Now let’s focus on the sole (and the rest of the body). Spa Week starts next week, and with it comes $50 spa treatments!! Sometimes saving your wallet and your body can be as important as saving the world. And if you hit up the Halcyon Days Salon & Spa at Saks or Neiman Marcus, you can take your utterly relaxed self down to the shoe department, and spend what you saved on the Spa Week special on a new pair of neon Prada pumps. Anything to wash away the feeling of the low spa slipper…

I kid. I’d totally wear flats if it meant getting serenely massaged head to toe for $50. Meanwhile, all these shoes can be found at Saks.com (TOP: Prada, Prada, Prada. BOTTOM: Ugg, MICHAEL Michael Kors, Prada.)

At 15 Halcyon Days Salon & Spa locations across the country, 9 Saks and 1 Neiman Marcus included, you have your $50 pick of:

50 Min Aromatic Well-Being Facial
50 Min Therapeutic Full Body Massage
70 Min Manicure + Pedicure with Choice of Cake & Ice Cream, Citrus Honey Blossom or Sweet Retreat

But you have thousands more spas to choose from on SpaWeek.com! Spa Week gets you $50 spa treatments from April 16th-22nd.

However you want to do it, we want you to feel good all over.

Upon my recent return from snowboarding, and at the on-set of spring, I found myself at a loss for an opportunity to hone my boarding craft in the off-season. Unwilling to take an eight-month sabbatical from the sport, I entertained momentary flirtations with a snowboard simulator but wondered about its ability to give me anything more than a mediocre core workout, one easily matched by a simple sit-up regime. I needed to substitute snowboarding with something that required similar movement and a push outside of my comfort zone. I decided to take up skateboarding.

Having no idea about which skateboard would work best for me, I chose a cute looking board by Moxie Girl (not to be confused with Roxy) and used the ballet bar in my dance studio to pull myself along the hardwood floor. To my credit, I was fearless from the start and even attempted several kick flips in the foyer, which I had dutifully studied on You Tube. However, when the board suddenly flew out from under my feet with reckless abandon, I concluded that some lessons might be required.

As it turned out, a friend of mine, born-and-bred California girl, had an in with the local surfer/skater community and a black book of professional skating contacts. Without long consideration she decided that her good friend, Steve Olson would love to teach me and told me to email him.

Olson interviewed me via telephone before we met, asking me a variety of questions from what type of helmet and padding I had, to how strong my bones were and how flexible I was. Before agreeing, he kept repeating that he “didn’t normally teach” which I thought was strange since I had assumed he must be a professional skateboard instructor. Yet he agreed to meet for a trial lesson.

Professional he was. I was later informed he was a former World Champion. No pressure on me, then.

© Steve Olson by: Alex Olson

Upon arrival at my first lesson, Olson took one look at my cute little Moxie board and shook his head as if to imply I had brought shame upon the sport. He spent about ten minutes explaining why this was not a well designed board, though he admitted he could see how the graphic would have appealed to me. He then moved on to my attire. I was reprimanded for wearing Ugg boots and the suggestion that I trade them for my Dior biker boots was equally unwelcome. Apparently, I needed to purchase Vans.

“So have you stood on a skateboard before?” he asked. I truthfully admitted that, other than my few attempts in the dance studio, I found the prospect to be a little scary, but inspired by snowboarding, I was now up for the challenge.

© Steve Olson

By the end of our trial lesson, I found Olson to be an excellent teacher. He was methodical, patient and very encouraging. He didn’t push me too fast, yet kept me learning at a pace that promised consistent rewards. I was inspired and I think he was as well. After all, considering the fact that Olson “didn’t usually teach” he seemed to enjoy the opportunity to give constructive criticism and impart year’s worth of wisdom upon an enthusiastic blank canvas. I promised to be the perfect muse.

Jay Adams

Skateboarding, particularly the classic styles that inspire me, is about movement and balance. Being a dancer, I found that I already had some of the principle elements of the sport engrained. Watching skaters like Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta, one can’t help but be seduced by their effortless fluidity.

Becoming proficient at skateboarding takes both passion and commitment. I never knew if I would enjoy the sport, but as it turned out, I felt this drive to be skateboarding every day and missed it when I didn’t get the opportunity to practice. I don’t know where the passion has come from, but the determination to master the movements that I find so inspiring now feels part of my soul.

Chloë Sevigny

The popularity of skateboarding is as big as soccer or baseball in terms of participation. There are thousands of people around the world who skateboard for a living in one way or another and there are more skateboard websites and magazines than ever before.

Kirsten Lea

Sadly, when it comes to skater girl fashion, the current marketplace leaves a lot to be desired.
There are extremely few females who look beautiful, elegant and stylish while on their board. I can find only one example, possibly the most stylish female in the world, Chloë Sevigny. Let’s be fair, Chloë looks beyond cool no matter what she wears.

Stacy Peralta

Now, a month into my training, I’m spending more time working on my core muscles to ease the strain on my lower legs. So far, I’ve had no bad falls, which I credit partly to my cautious nature and mostly to Olson, who is always on standby in case I start to wobble.

I’m interested to see how the skateboarding will have helped my snowboarding skills. If nothing else, my confidence and fearlessness is steadily increasing.

Since I live in California, come summer time, I’m sure that I will be embarking on the inevitable surf lessons and who knows, by the end of the year I could be the new face of Roxy. (Not to be confused with Moxie).

Holy Barbara Streisand! Moncler blew the ski socks off of my tootsies this fine NY Fashion Week at Grand Central Station. After my failed attempt to first get into the VIP section, I found myself in the press area, along a balcony brimming with reporters and select onlookers alike. There were elevated stands that had hit capacity before I arrived, so I went directly to the balcony’s ledge. With no space to squeeze to the front, lest not with my giant furry body bag, I was left to stand third back behind towering standers with a better view… of seemingly a milling crowd of averages waiting for the train. (Please pardon image quality due to lack of iPhone. Soon my children.)

Through cracks in the spaces between heads in front of me, I glimpsed the Moncler-clad ski ready people appear from nowhere to line up within the crowd. I held up my Blackberry to give us a view.

A bit miffed, my mind wandered to the common folk on the first level, who apparently had the true front row seats. What the eff? Desperate for a better view, I sprinted downstairs, down to the main level of slowly segregating models and humans.

When I reached the floor, I could here the grumblings of the underbelly of Grand Central Station. A gray bearded giant green t-shirted crazy walked plumb through the line of models shouting, “THEY CAN’T DO THIS! Just walk around! This isn’t real!” He tried to incite a riot, a Monclerebellion if you will, but not one person followed suit. Regular passersby in North Faces and Uggs were whipping out camera phones with dazed looks, mouths agape at the oddity of witnessing such a thing. Then BAM! Flash mob.

Barbara Streisand.

Mind. BLOWN. Marvelous. And, did I mention, Barbara Streisand? Not just the Duck Sauce WOOOOOO version, but also the glorious sound of Babs herself. Perplexed, I watched as Moncler proved its flexibility and active ready comfort through mass synchronized dance. Though I certainly was getting an excellent view of the models close up – I could see diamond quilted nylon side zip up sweaters and the minute details on the impossibly expensive puffy belted skiwear with perfect clarity, my thoughts began to wander back to the upper level, where the panoramic view of such a thing would be most vivid from a height. So I gathered myself, darted past security, through the aisle from where more Monclerians were about to shimmy in, sprinted back up to the balcony and slipped into tier two VIP and marveled at the rest.

I found this video – an uninterrupted version from someone who obviously didn’t have quite as erratic adventure as I did. Enjoy.

Founded by Dan Gosling, Marc Moore and Luke Harwood in New Zealand, Stolen Girlfriends Club was created as a meeting of ‘surfers done good’. A gaggle of artists and sportsmen, the men decided to take on a fashion line, and with a growing local following, they’ve established themselves as fun loving brand for the likes of Juliette Lewis, Kate Bosworth and The Cobra Snake.

Dazed Digital: Why the name?
It was romantically idealistic. The fictional idea of a group/a gang that would rescue damsels in distress (girls in shitty relationships). Originally this was a theme for our art show (called stolen girlfriends club), and then it turned into a fashion label! All because people liked the show title, and we wanted to make clothes for ourselves.

DD: What designers if any inspire you or do you admire?
We have always been fans of Hedi Slimane (please start making clothes again!). We have a lot of admiration for Riccardo Tisci, Stefano Pilati, and really digging what Phillip Lim is doing at the moment too. Is that sexist to only be liking male designers? Maybe we can put in Phoebe Philo in there too, plus she’s super hot too.

DD: What kind of person do you design for?
Art punks, fashion drunks and movie stars in shitbox cars.

DD: Why do you think you’ve become so popular with the celebs like Juliette Lewis and the like?
To be honest it was ages ago when Juliette came in to our office. Since then we have had absolutely no celebrities wearing our stuff, or no proof! There have been rumours of Kate Bosworth wearing one of fringe dresses, Beyonce Knowles buying our sequin bike pants & matching bra when she was in Australia, Daisy Lowe wearing our mesh singlet while riding a jetski with P Diddy in Monaco, Agyness Deyn wearing our mesh prowler dress to bed in New York… but like I say – all rumours. We really need photographic evidence.

DD: What was your current collection inspired by?
A nomadic biker gang of sherpa mountain climbers, with their kidnapped trophy girlfriends. Pretty simple really!

(dazeddigital.com)

I love the name of this cool and casual, “with a touch of rugged” collection, and the story behind it. The biker look is evident, though the pieces appear functional and lend themselves to mixing a matching for a variety of looks.

It’s a fashion family affair!

Agyness Deyn‘s little sister Emily is already making waves in the fashion industry with a collection of shirts she designed for Uniqlo.

The British supermodel was originally approached by the company to design for them, but it was Aggy who suggested they ask her sister.

The Polaroid snapshot shirts, which Emily designed with her BFF will be hitting stores on April 30th and have already been well received since Agyness was spotted wearing one backstage at Anna Sui.

Congrats!

Image via Style.com Today's New York Post reports an exclusive in the latest Emmanuel Ungaro saga. The House of Ungaro is now looking for buyer and according to the Post , it's pretty much Lindsay Lohan's fault. This past year has been a rough ride for the label, with Lindsay's design debacle , financial troubles and last month's inevitable closure of its 8000 square foot Madison Avenue store.

Dear Victoria Beckham, Yesterday I said that Cheryl Cole was the perfect substitute to your street style. After seeing how fabulous you looked a London’s Heathrow airport yesterday I feel I should take that statement back and put it in the bin where it belongs.

To commemorate Bottega Veneta’s opening of a new boutique in Taipei, the luxury designer will come out with a limited edition knot handbag.

Named the Taipei Knot, this handbag will available exclusively through the new store; only 50 will be produced.

Sporting shades of york, cigar, and truffle the patchwork of the handbag comprises 25 separate pieces of leather.

The bags are inscribed with the words “Taipei 2010” on a sterling plate inside the clutch, and will be on sale exclusively at the Bellavita store.

The new boutique is situated in Bellavita Luxury Shopping Mall, and stretches out 3,200 square feet.

Marco Bizzarri, CEO of Bottega Veneta, said he considers the Taiwan market as one of their most well-established and mature markets.

“In our experience, Taiwanese consumers have sophisticated tastes and a clear appreciation for quality and workmanship. They tend to be well traveled and show a high degree of brand loyalty,” Bizzarri commented.

Bottega Veneta currently runs more than 130 directly-operated stores and over 25 franchises in 32 countries, offering handbags, small leather goods, luggage, ready-to-wear, fashion and fine jewelry, and home items including furniture.

Get Ripped

Repair Shop

6. When that artful rip becomes a gaping hole, turn to Denim Therapy, a mail-order service that can resurrect even the most battered pair of jeans in about two weeks. Broken zippers are replaced, unruly hems fixed, and torn pockets are stitched back to life. And because the company stocks thousands of threads, the weaves come amazingly close to the original.
($7 per inch for holes and tears; $18 for basic hems; and $25 for zipper replacement; denimtherapy.com)

Photograph by Nikolai

Double Dip

7. Denim-on-denim is acceptable, provided you know what you’re doing. The right mix is the difference between looking like a rodeo hand and looking like you can handle contemporary style.
From left: Bradley Cooper, Chris Pine and David Beckham.

Head-to-Toe Denim

8. The easiest way to approach head-to-toe denim is to go for the chiaroscuro effect. Pair a chambray shirt with clean, inky jeans. For depth, add a tie like the one shown here, just a shade lighter than the shirt.

Banana Republic

Photograph by Maria Valentino/MCV Photo

Go Tan

9. If you like the idea of going beyond blue denim for summer but just can’t do white jeans, a sand-colored pair is an ideal compromise. In shades from dark khaki to dusty beige, these well-worn five-pockets look just as good on a beach walk as they do at a crosswalk.

The Next Big Thing: Naked & Famous

10. Brandon Svarc, owner of Montreal’s Naked & Famous, is a serious student of denim. He can rattle off historical facts, like why almost all jeans use copper-colored thread (137 years ago, Levi Strauss & Co. wanted something to match the copper rivets) or why the best denim fabric comes from Okayama, Japan (it’s the mineral content and pH balance of the town’s spring water). And he puts his encyclopedic knowledge to practical use as a designer. In just a couple of seasons, Naked & Famous’ straight- and skinny-leg selvage jeans, made in Canada and with fabric from Japan, have become the favorite of the denim cognoscenti and young Hollywood. And this spring, Svarc is introducing a new kind of selvage that is 30 percent silk and 3 percent elastin, for a little stretch, making for jeans that are light and pliable. “You can do hurdles in them,” he says.

Photograph courtesy of Naked & Famous

The Opening: Grown and Sewn

11. When we first heard the term Kax, a play on khaki, we were dubious—then we got our hands on the rugged American-made pants. Kax have the weight and feel of chinos with the cut, wash, and detailing (five pockets, antique copper rivets) of jeans. Rob Magness, a former Ralph Lauren designer, launched them as the signature item in his first store, Grown & Sewn, in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood. The understated men’s shop sells cotton T-shirts, durable canvas bags, and broken-in leather belts, but you’re probably going to go straight for the Kax. (184 Duane St., New York City, 917-754-8220; grownandsewn.com)

The Comeback Kid: Evisu

12. Before it became known for oversize streetwear, Evisu was the original Japanese cult jean. Now, thanks to new chief executive Scott Morrison, who cofounded Earnest Sewn and Paper Denim & Cloth before joining Evisu last year, the premium-denim brand is going back to its roots. That means preserving the quality of the cloth while softening the silhouette and surface texture. Spring’s debut includes straight-legged fits in authentically faded washes. Even the ubiquitous white seagull on the back pocket has benefited from the makeover, becoming a much more subtle accent. Call it a makeunder. (Available at Barneys New York)

Such a well put together article….no stone left unturned!

Iconic Western boot maker Lucchese is catering to cowgirls this spring with a limited-edition collection under the Diva label.

While all the new boots are made in the U.S., each style will carry an Italian woman’s name, such as Agostina, for a 13-inch stonewashed boot; Marcella, for a 7-inch stonewashed style; and Siena, for a 7-inch boot with colorful embroidery. Lucchese plans to release 120 pairs per style, which will include hand-written signatures and numbers on the inside. Depending on consumer response to the boots, additional pairs could be made available.

According to Mario Vega, director of marketing for the El Paso, Texas-based company, the collection was launched to give women a chance to discover their inner diva. “There’s something for everyone,” he said. “They’re more cutting-edge and outside the true Western scope.”

To keep the collection fresh, new patterns will be added every three to four weeks, Vega said, noting that three new lasts were created for the program. All styles are built on a 3/4-welt construction and feature a toe box with a gentle spring. Upper designs include distressed vintage looks, colorful overlay and underlay work, and scrunch effects. Retail prices range from $300 to $500, with distribution through core Western stores, boutiques and resort shops. Product is available for at-once delivery.

Taking the concept one step further, the company introduced an online contest this month on Lucchese.com for consumers who want to put their own spin on a boot. The site has downloadable pattern templates for design submissions. Participants can also tell the story behind the design in an essay and then give the boot an Italian woman’s name. All entries must be postmarked no later than March 22. Winners will receive one pair of their own custom-made boots, and the essay and photo of the boot will be posted in the Lucchese newsletter, on the Website and on Facebook.

(WWD)

I love this boot, and must confess that I have always owned a pair of western boots…..it has nothing to do with the fact that I reside in Oklahoma, but that I’ve found them to be a great wardrobe addition and very comfortable. For me personally, I can’t and don’t wear the plain ‘ole run of the mill boot…..just like everything else, they MUST some pizzazz!

I currently have a pair of tan, tooled leather boots which are accented with turquoise nuggets, set in silver. When I first set eyes on them, I knew I had to have them. For me, I don’t want to look “cowgirl-ish,” so I always pair them with skinny jeans, a cute top and jacket for a more “modern” look.

Every so often, we see them on the runways along with the closed-toe western look slide and then they disappear again to be revived at some later date. While I don’t wear my often, I always have them at the ready when I want to change things up a bit.

The fascinating asset of the final piece is the aesthetic which maintains much of Owens philosophy and concept

Oh no APC, wide of the mark on this one. Unfortunately for APC this line is less than impressive. If you ask me this is just a slightly glorified version of a Gap line. The ugly Ugg-like boots and the lack of patterns just don’t do it for me. What’s with the creepy model too? Hopefully APC learns from their mistakes. Sorry!
