The app allows you to browse through featured products, buy online or search for a store location with the product nearest to you. The High Line Rink, located at West 30th and 10th Avenue, will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday – Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. The $12 admission fee includes skate rental for those not rolling up with their own pair. Various food trucks and booze from The Lot on Tap will be around for your enjoyment. We and the rest of NYC are patiently awaiting the arrival of the new UNIQLO flagship to open up on 5th Avenue. To build some more excitement for the store, Uniqlo has officially changed its wallscape. The new wallscape  offers a sneak peak of the the brand’s new “Made for All”  campaign which launches this fall. (Just in time for the store opening)

This collaboration is part of Uniqlo’s initiative to celebrate New York designers. Costello Tagliapietra and Charlotte Ronson have launched collabs there in the last month, and we saw Philip Lim there over the winter.

Each piece is no more than $29.90 – a freaking steal for any of these coveted designers! So thanks Uniqlo for making their stunning aesthetic available for a price that doesn’t jeopardize our first borns.

We began the fashion search at Maguire Steele, the PR company that represents Timo Weiland, a designer we thought would evoke their clean cut hippiness. We arrived to find access to not only Timo, but to the Shipley & Halmos and Billy Reid collections, and Duckie Brown shoes. What a lovely way to start the day. Jeff was surprised to find himself liking this salmon Shipley blazer and green saddle shoes by Duckie; once he put them on, he saw the magic in them. Color and fit; bright and tight. That’s the vision.

Playing the green Timo Weiland vertically striped cardigan against the horizontally striped Billy Reid shirt made for optical illusionism – perfect for on-stage psychedelia. We tried with two Shipley & Halmos ties, one a conglomeration of pin thin geometric shapes, the other made of a mustard velvet (which totally called for heavy petting). We’re taking all of it along.

In the looks above, note the Shipley and Halmos pants: crisp, paper thin, glowing blue. Jeff really dug the look and feel of them. This sparked our next stop – Zara. Known in the masculine for modestly priced, modernly cut suits, I thought he might find a pant with a similar fit. Unfortunately, no fancy pants there captured our attention quite like Shipleys; the drawback to going from such a quality level of design down to one of the quickest of the fast fashion powerhouses (2 week turnaround from sketch to shelf!).

We did however conquer his need for new jeans. Imagine, he’s never owned a pair of skinny jeans! FashionIndie’s first instinct was mustard, for its ability to bring a bright spice to the stage. The look on his face when Mustard Slim Cut Jeans were suggested was dubious to say the least. We insisted he give it a try. In the fitting room, dubious shifted to contemplation, and very quickly to impressed contentment. Sold! To the man in yellow. He liked the fit so much, he got them in heather black as well. (TIP – Gentlemen, go to Zara right now… they’re only $39!)

We perused the rest of rushed retail row on Broadway from Broome to Bleecker from Urban Outfitters to Uniqlo, but nothing was jumping out at us. Man, were we spoiled by the gorgeous goods at Maguire Steele. Plus, mass market seems no place to find pieces to encapsulate the unique Heavy Pets sound. Time to switch things up,take it down real low, down all the way to Brooklyn’s poppin’ top vintage haunt, Beacon’s Closet.

Our instructions for The Pet: grab anything that strikes you. With that we end up with armfuls psychedelic patterns, bronze grommets, cowboy flair and a polyester disaster that shall remain on the hanger.

We pruned the options, ready to take eight new/old shirts in their varying sizes back to the rest of The Heavy Pets. The first piece on the rack? Pierre Cardin, $18.95. He looked at it skeptically, FashionIndie looked at it delightedly on him; we managed to convince acception with the tidbit that Pierre Cardin did introduce The Beatles to the Nehru jacket. Done and done.

The full styling goes down around 6:00 p.m. this evening when they are done with the soundcheck. As they are musicians, and this is fashion, that time is of course a rough estimation. But when it happens, we’ll be live tweeting @FashionIndie & @JessicaLapidos.

- In the wake of the disaster in Japan (you know, the whole country ceasing to exist and everything) Uniqlo‘s parent company Fast Retailing will donate 1.4 billion yen ($300 million…it sounds more impressive in yen) to organizations aiding the crisis and 700 million yen in clothing. It’s nice when fashion reveals a heart beneath all the loathing. [Racked]

- Tyra Banks on wowing the Ivy League: “…it’s like, well, oh my God, why is a model going to Harvard? But that’s actually a good thing, because when people have low expectations, you’re just constantly going, ‘Ta-da!’ And they’re like, ‘Wow.’ It doesn’t take a lot to wow them when they have low expectations.” That should, like, totally, be Harvard’s new motto! - Emma Watson is slowly taking over the fashion world. First she created a green capsule collection for Alberta Ferretti and now it’s been announced that she’s the newest face for Lancôme. She’s taken some time off from Brown to focus on all her extracurricular endeavors — you hear that, Tyra? Brown’s got an opening! [WWD]

- Kate Moss’s 90-minute commercial for Dior’s new Addict lipstick (an unfortunate name considering their former creative director is currently in rehab) shot by Jonas Åkerlund and featuring music by Duran Duran. In the ad, we get a glimpse into the glamorous life of Kate Moss and shockingly there’s not a single line of coke… [YouTube]

- And we get to see a completely different side of La Moss with her short for Comic Relief where she gets drunk and goes all Fatal Attraction on a teddy bear. 5 bucks this version is more true to life than the Dior ad. [Telegraph]

- For the record, Daphne Guinness does not think Victoria Beckham is an “ugly pig” who “annoys the shit” out of her. She just thinks she couldn’t walk a mile in her 10-inch tranny platforms without the help of a backer. [Fashionista]

- Crystal Renn gets to werq in Marni while hanging a fashionable ten with a Chanel surfboard for the first in the week-long editorial project, Crystal Renn: Identity.  For “Surfer,” her identity was apparently Gidget on acid. [Stylecaster]

The  Spring/Summer collection 2011 turns to wide spaces and primordial color contrasts: chalky Sahara whites, taupe pillars of stone, boldly outlined by fiery red, sky blue, and elemental black.  Dresses look easy: meticulously fitted to invite free movement. Blouses are both, sporty and feminine, tops range from classic to Kaftan. Looks come together with weightless jackets in various styles and fabrics such as light wool, twill, and techno-taffeta. Pinstripe pants with jackets have been masterfully executed and reduced to their essence. Ultrathin sweaters and t-shirts give shape to the body.

It’s about as fast as fast fashion can get, but Topman still manages to churn out respectable looking pieces from time to time (though respectable quality is a different matter entirely).  The brand’s latest lookbook shows off some nice knits, jackets, trousers, and coats, all of it very reminiscent of what’s been on the big boy runways the past few seasons.  Jump for more pics.

Say what you will about Topman, Uniqlo, H&M, Urban, etc., but for those without thousands to drop on a Band of Outsiders parka, they’re sort of a godsend.

Just because there’s torrential rain falling from the heavens doesn’t mean it’s not summer.  Check the humidity that just won’t give up.  There’s no way you can wear a trench and if you try a rain slicker you’ll be spending a good ten minutes peeling that thing from your skin once you get inside.  And let’s not forget about the foolishness of wearing rain boots.  So here’s a handy little guide on beating the heat (and humidity) while also staying reasonably dry.

As much of a pain in the ass as it is to carry an umbrella around, it’s totally necessary.  You can find a huge variety of cheapies around the city.  Go to Chinatown, Muji, Macy’s, Barneys, or Brooks Brothers, all with umbrellas ranging from $3 to $50.  By using an umbrella, you don’t have to drop a huge amount of coin on a windbreaker which–let’s face it–probably isn’t waterproof anyways.  And what rain does make it through?  It’ll feel damn good.For your top, wear a thin cotton button down.  A t-shirt is liable to get wet and stick to your body and when it dries, it’ll be wrinkled and unsightly.  Furthermore, t-shirts are extremely constricting in this weather.  You’re basically asking to get hot and sweaty (and not in the good, Al Green way).  You can leave the top few buttons undone and allow the shirt to breathe around you.  If a good breeze hits, it might even inflate the shirt and you’ll feel like you’re parachuting/Puff Daddy in that one Ma$e video.  That’s always a plus…if you’re particularly immature like I am.

Concerning your bottom?  Don’t wear pants, guys.  Most young men likely to frequent Fashion Indie probably also wear slim or skinny pants.  Your legs are the most likely part of you that will get wet.  If they do and you’re wearing pants, you’ll be extremely uncomfortable and it will take forever to dry.  If you’re wearing loose pants, you will still be extremely uncomfortable and probably look half-retarded.  Think about it–you’ll have your pants plastered to your shins while the rest droops off to the back.  Not a good look.

Go with a pair of shorts–preferably of a solid, darker color.  We don’t want the rain to soak through and show your privates off now, do we?

Now for the most daunting task of summer rainwear: the shoes.  You can always go the flip-flop route, but if you’re in a walking city, you might find it ‘icky’ or ‘eww-ie’ to leave your feet so exposed to the inevitable puddles you’ll have to traipse through.  If you can’t buck up, go for shoes that will dry fast, you won’t mind tossing, and that don’t look like you’re wearing them for those exact reasons.

Try going with plimsolls or the always reliable Vans and Chucks.  Or get your old-school Bruce Lee on with a pair of espadrilles which are being pushed hard this summer.  The shoes that make the most sense to wear, however, are some genuine boat shoes.  Seeing as they’re made to be worn on a boat, they should serve you well in rainy weather.

Finally, carry a tote.  A backpack’s going to extend too far out from the umbrella and get soaked, a messenger bag is just going to make things hotter.  A tote, however, stays close to your side, is of a quick-drying material, allows for a variety of patterns and styles for cheap and, most importantly, can hold a surprising amount of goods.

1. Old Navy

I recently wrote about Old Navy in my “Top 5 Places To Shop This Summer” because it is one of my absolute favorite place to shop for basics. THey offer classic and timeless pieces without taking a chunk of your wallet.

2. American Apparel

American Apparel is a great place to go for basics because they specialize in them. You can also can basics in a variety of colors and styles  that you probably would not be able to get anywhere else.

3. Target

This store is probably the one you can get most bang for your buck. They are located everywhere so there is no need to fret over if there or isn’t there one nearby. One of the most memorable thing I got from there was a pair of brown shorts about 2 years ago that no matter what I wear it with I look like a lot more that the 10 bucks I actually spent.

4. Uniqlo

Now some of you people outside the New York area will be asking what the hell is a Uniqlo? Well I’ll tell you that it is an amazing shop located in Soho. If you are ever in downtown NYC, this is the place to go for great basics.

We’ve been talking about this collaboration for some time, only because everyone is anticipating it…and I don’t know why! Yes, some of the pieces are interesting (the elongated tux jacket), but most of the looks are BORING! We’re looking at grey pants, white buttons ups, cashmere sweaters, and turtlenecks. YES, turtlenecks! Weren’t those banned from fashion years ago?

This could be a good one folks! Jil Sander is preparing to launch a collaboration line with UNIQLO simply known as J+. I’m excited for the collection, and I’m sure we are in for a high quality collaboration.

NYLON gave us a sneak peek at Shipley & Halmos’ upcoming, exclusive line for UNIQLO.  I’m generally a big fan of their designs; and these looks are cute, but nothing special in my eyes.

First announced in January, the capsule collection hits stores on May 7.

I don’t know where it came from but after three hours of attempting to flush it down the toilet after I squashed it with my size 14 trainers, it decided it wasn’t dead and attempted to disco dance with me. Fortunately, the window was open so I chucked it out to enjoy a four story faceplant. True story.

LINKAGE: Seemingly Innocuous Event Brings Out Seemingly Ridiculous Clothes [The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly]

New York based fashion labels Opening Ceremony and Gilded Age are next in line to design menswear for Uniqlo. Under the design invitation project they have been commissioned to produce a spring summer capsule collection, and in addition womenswear is to be fronted by Shipley & Halmos and Steven Alan.

Opening Ceremony will offer ‘neat collar and fit given to balanced plaid shirting in blue, green and pink and shorter (just above the ankle) cargo pants which feature a more wider shape – mirroring the changing fashion silhouette – finished with a lightweight shawl collar jacket. Compulsory knitwear comes in complimentary tones of beige and blue, along with slim cut trousers and matching fitted jacket.’

Gilded Age offers up a more ‘relaxed fit and shorts are prevalent in a variety of checks and come cropped at the knee. Scarves are worn over muted jackets, check shirts and soft cotton Henley neck t-shirts (in red, greys and blue), paired with chinos.’

Jil Sander, who left the label back in 04, has signed on to be the creative director of Uniqlo, overseeing men’s and women’s clothes for the retailer. Uniqlo will also create a special collection with Sander’s very minimal aesthetic and lot’s of black.

I hate to say it but something about the new series of designer looks hitting Uniqlo doesn’t give me a rise.

It looks like the same basic things that have been shipped out for the past couple months at Target. I really love the designers they selected, but come on I need some excitement, some vavavoom in my collabos, especially after I J’d in my P’s after seeing the new Target/McQueen collection.

Uniqlo has good about selecting designers but seems to drop the ball when it comes to producing the collections. Anyone who regretfully headed to the store to grab the Alexander Wang pieces they threw together last year would know what I’m talking about.

Hopefully, there is more to see as the launch nears.

Steven Alan is quickly becoming the NYC Collabo king. After a successful line with Urban Outfitters, he’s already set to make waves at Uniqlo.

“Basically we’re going to have two mimes. A male and a female mime inside the machine. And the public can see them through glass. When you get there, we’re going to have Uniqlo reps dressed in the silver bodysuits. And they’re going to hold a thermograph scanner — think of an airport security machine. The thermographer identifies cold spots in your body. After you go through that, you go to the vending machine and push a button and the mimes are going to do a synchronized choreographed routine and then your outfit comes out.”

No more spending 25 cents to watch stale gum-balls spiral down vending machines in the local mall. Now I get to watch mimes in silver suits dance and give me free crap. AWESOME.
