Burkman Bros Guide for Tourists and Being Shirtless at Concerts

The Burkman Bros are the some of the greatest tourists on the planet. For each new collection, brothers Ben and Doug Burkman road trip or travel to a new destination for inspiration. They’ve gone to Iceland, traversed America, and so many other locales. They also had a big move recently, into the CFDA Incubator! So last night at the launch of their collaboration with Urban Outfitters (nothing over $59!), after I perused the hot models wearing the The Tourist collection, I asked brothers Burkman about their packing skills.

Meet the brothers: Doug on the left and Ben on the right. (and honorary Burkman Sister, NYC artist Serra who tricked out the walls of their Incubator). So how has the move been treating you? Ben: The move to our new CFDA Incubator space was actually the best thing! It's been inspiring, refreshing and has renewed our sense of well-being around the office! (not-so-side-note: The Bros just won $10,000 for presenting the best business pitch to a group of real investors as part of the CFDA Incubator program!) Speaking of making moves, what will you definitely be packing when you take off for your next summer trip? Doug: Kiehl's SPF, Gurkee's sandals and Burkman Bros tank tops. Ben: For a beach destination, really light really simple. Shorts, tank tops, some really great sandals, a hat, sunglasses, and my iPhone with all my camera apps to take lots of pictures. If you're hitting any festivals this summer, what can we catch you wearing there? Ben: Like Burning Man? No, that's a whole other story. For a Coachella-like festival, I’d wear our Burkman Bros white shorts with the engineered jacquard print and mix it up with a vintage tee shirt and a cool pair of sneakers with bracelets and necklaces. Court Date at Tiffany’s: Swatch Suing for Over $4 Billion

It’s been a litigious year so far in fashion, what with Macy’s, Martha Stewart and J.C. Penney going at it and Urban Outfitters embroiled in a lawsuit of its own design, but those two have nothing on the legal battle between Tiffany & Co. and Swatch Group. Swatch has sued Tiffany’s for an astronomical $4.13 billion in lost profits; Tiffany’s, meanwhile, has reported net sales of only $3.09 billion.

The kerfuffle stems from a deal the two companies struck in 2007. Tiffany’s and Swatch entered into a 20 year deal in which Swatch would design, manufacture and distribute Tiffany watches worldwide. Swatch terminated the agreement in Spetember 2011, accusing the famed jeweler of “systematic efforts to block and delay the development of the business.”

Tiffany & Co. has countersued the Swiss watch retailer for a rather paltry $589.4 million in damages. It claims Swatch “failed to provide appropriate distribution for Tiffany branded watches in the luxury space,” as well as neglected its brand management and product design obligations.

Swatch is expected to earn some payout from Tiffany’s when arbitration begins in October. [WWD, sub req'd]

Jailbait: Teen Model’s Lawsuit Against Urban Outfitters Heading to Court

Remember Hailey Clauson? The 16-year old model suing Urban Outiftters for $28 million after the mass retail chain used a “blatantly salacious” image of her for a T-shirt? Well, pack your legal briefs because a New York federal judge has ruled that the case actually holds water and will go to court.

The photo in question of a then 15-year-old Clauson was never to see the light of day after her agent at Ford complained to the photographer, one Mr. Jason Lee Parry. Parry, who agreed not to license the images for commercial use, claims the photos were stolen from him, however Mitra Khayyam, the founder of T-shirt label and co-defendant Blood Is the New Black, begs to differ.

Khayyam stated that Parry met with him several times and was paid for his images including the controversial biker spread eagle.

Parry also argued that Clauson posed herself and that he didn’t find the images salacious and if others saw it that way it was “bad on them.”

Well, Judge George Daniels saw something as he rejected Urban Outfitters’ move for dismissal claiming that Clauson “has sufficiently alleged a cause of action against Urban Outfitters for use of her image to create false endorsement or false designation of origin, as well as claims for false representation of the characteristics or qualities of plaintiff’s modeling services.”

In other words, Urban made her look like a skank. A cheap skank.

This, however, makes her look like a high fashion model. Note the difference. And see you in court. [Telegraph via WWD]

Fashion’s Got a New Vice

“As I’m sure you know, being in a crowd while on acid is the worst thing in the world [True]. As I’m sure you also know, fashion people are the worst people in the entire world [Unfortunately, doubly true].” So begins Vice Magazine‘s “coverage” of London Fashion Week. Sending a young girl named Elektra to Topshop Unique‘s spring 2012 runway show on acid is such a Vice thing to do — and Vice is sooooo 10 years ago that I didn’t even realize it was still corrupting youth. But I’m glad that someone is…besides Justin Bieber. Vice‘s experiment in experimentation proved successful enough, however, that those kooky kids are broadening their coverage of fashion…in their own unique way.

On Monday, Andy Capper, editor of Vice UK, will debut the mag’s new feature, “Fashion Week Internationale” at Vice‘s office in Williamsburg — the birthplace and subsequent burial ground of post-ironic irony. The series will cover oft-neglected fashion weeks in politically and economically unstable countries such as Columbia, Islamabad and Russia. They’ve also got a new book out, Fashion Cats, featuring two cats in the latest Japanese fashion — which basically has New York Times bestseller written all over it. Anticipating the feline fashion frenzy, Urban Outfitters put in an order for 10,000 copies, but it’s available wherever books are sold…i.e. not Borders. #sad

As for Elektra’s future as a fashion critic…well, let’s just say Cathy Horyn she is not. Her observations went along the lines of ”I’m intensely tripping my shit” and ”I was too overwhelmed by the music and the people. I didn’t even really look at the clothes.” Then there was a run-in with Naomi Campbell that left the poor girl “in a very bad place” — “I got really bad vibes off of her. I don’t feel very well now. I thought she was going to hit me.”

And now Elektra knows what it’s like working for Naomi Campbell. This was a valuable learning experience after all![WWD]

Hailey Clauson Controversy: Biker Babe Too Racy?

We’ve been fielding comments left and right about sixteen year old model Hailey Clauson who is suing Urban Outfitters $28 million for using this spread eagle, biker babe photo of her on a tshirt.

Clauson has been a model for 2 years for brands like Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Oscar de la Renta, and she is claiming that this photo is “destroying her reputation”. According to her lawyer, her leather shorts, lack of a bra, and “blatanly salicious” manner have framed a portrait that would be of interest “to the likes of pedophiles”. Ouch. Shot by photographer Jason Lee Parry, he claimed that he did not release the photo after complaints from her agent at Ford. The unanswered question of the day is, how did the image end up in German magazine Quest and then on a t-shirt at Urban Outfitters if it was never released? Do you guys think its too racy for a 16 year old?

When co-workers, friends, dudes on the street give you the head-to-toe, the pop factor might hit at the foot. A shoe by any other name might look as sweet. 1. Walter Steiger: The most groundbreaking shoe in existence at this moment is the Walter Steiger Ishi, or as I like to call it – the inverse platform. Excitedly, he reaches for napkin and pen and draws this. This person was Paul Steiger, Walter Steiger’s son. At the sample sale he invited me to that followed Fashion Week, I got these platforms and have since worn them to bits and pieces (they even survived a Bassnectar show, as they are now my favorite shoes to dance in). Then this morning, I went to the showroom and previewed the Fall collection where I got to ~~try on~~ dance in Spring’s #1:

2. Prada: Colorful striped elastic bands that hold your foot tight call for attention. The rubber sole gives you stability.

3. Alexander Wang: Zip it, flap it, lace it. You’re still showy in nude.

4. Rodarte: Engraved leather, whittled heel. That totem pole commands a look.

5. Modekungen: Black and white platform – a nod to Prabal and your dual personality.

6. Jeffrey Campbell: Arch support, who needs it? Just chop it off and leave a wooden cutout in its place.

7. Emilio Pucci: A Pucci print catches the eye, no matter what. These could make even a LBD psychedelic.

8. Julian Louie for Aldo: The ikat draws the eye and reminds of peaceful tribes.

9. Carmen Raffia: The color will blend in with your leg, thus transforming your platform incognito. Plus, the flat lean-to front sole begs the on-point stance.

- With Osama bin Laden‘s assassination this weekend, it’s time to consider what really matters as a result of this historic precedent: the economy. Fashion Police: NYC Anti Counterfeit Bill will Arrest You for Buying Fake

The devil doesn’t wear Prada. The devil wears fake Prada. Counterfeiting in the fashion industry accounts for over $250 billion in losses for businesses, not to mention drug trafficking, terrorism and the most despicable labor conditions on the planet. Harper’s Bazaar and the City of New York are both taking action against this heinous smirch on fashion.

While Harper’s Bazaar tackled the online counterfeit debacle at their recent Anti-Counterfeiting Summit, New York is getting all sorts of serious about the topic of fakes. New York City council member Margaret Chin is championing a bill that would criminalize the purchase of fake trademarked items. In layman’s terms: Buy a fake bag, go to jail.

“The bill targets those people who purchase goods that they know are counterfeit,” says Chin.

Fake bag street vendors line Canal Street and crawl through Soho and Chinatown, making it at once a destination and a trap for tourists, and are a serious nuisance to those who live there. They cost NYC over $1 billion in tax revenue and all for what? To make you look tacky, that’s what.

Counterfeit is Ugly

This past Tuesday, top editors, PR firms, designers, and guests of honor from the Mayors office gathered under one collective roof at the Harper’s Bazaar 7th annual Anti-Counterfeit Summit. While dining on delicacies like truffle risotto balls, a panel of experts spoke about the dangers and harms of counterfeit goods. Frank Abagnale, one of the world’s most respected authorities on the subject (seeing that he lived the part which was interpreted in the hit book, movie, and now Broadway show Catch Me If You Can), Susan Engel, CE of Portero Luxury, an internet retailer of luxury goods, and Thomas Onda the chief of intellectual property at Levi’s were all on the panel to educate us on how the counterfeit industry funds terrorism, child labor malpractice, and fuels the drug industry. Judging by the surprised and horrified looks on everyone’s faces, counterfeit goods seem to be a battle that can mostly be won through mere awareness and education.

What can you do? Instead of buying fake, get a bag that no one has ever seen. Find one in a local store, go vintage, go to the biggies like Urban Outfitters or Zara, or save up for the real deal!

They sell their one of a kind pieces at Saks Fifth Avenue, Nieman Marcus, Intermix and Bluefly (among others) and have created lines for Urban Outfitters: Reformed and Nom de Plume YaYa. Look Four: Layered and Lace

The Long Lace Skirt: $205

I chose this skirt because it has to be layered, and the lace is insatiable. It’s perfectly narrow at the waist with a zipper, and it flares so naturally at the bottom. Spinning takes great effect in this.

The Nether Layer Ivory Skirt: $145

I went white underneath so that the lace can come alive in contrast. It’s shorter than the lace skirt, so there’s a cloud of mystery by the ankles. The elastic at the waistband makes this piece ultra versatile and the silk makes it super soft.

The Crop Tank Back-Lace: $125

From the front, it is proportioned just right for this skirt, curving up to the top of the hips. The back is made of white lace, covering sheer from nape to waist.

Coachella starts tomorrow and if you haven’t planned your outfits for the weekend then we’ve got your back. If you followed yesterday’s guide then your first day at the festival will go phenomenal. Today I’m going to tackle what to wear on the 2nd day of Coachella by the weather and artist lineup.

From the info above one can deduced that that acts that day are super young, hip, and laid back. Most importantly it is going to be hotter than Hades. For Saturday’s look you are going to keep the a young and fresh look all while trying to fight heatstroke. The only way I know how to pull both of these missions off is to go with a modern hippie look.

The signature piece of any hippie is tie-dye. To achieve this look you can pick up a great cut tank from Urban Outfitters. On bottom you can maintain your cool and sanity by pairing your tie-dye with these Marni tailored shorts. The shorts are simplistic enough to fit into the hippie culture but cut for the modern man.

As far as footwear goes try to avoid sandals at all costs. There are going to be a lot of people stomping around and your feet are bound to be a target. Not to mention that most mens feet are not attractive enough to have people staring at them. This is why you can pick up these Vans. They are super distressed and super comfortable.

When it comes to accessories they can be as tame or as wild as you want them to be. A straw fedora will keep your head away from the harsh rays and give you a more bohemian look. no matter how big of a hippie you are a man should always be wearing a timepiece. Why no go super funky them with this vintage American Apparel one. To top everything off why not just pop on a pair of bright colored wayfarers. they don’t necessarily need to be expensive. You can get a pair for $5 anywhere because they’re bound to get lost or broken in the chaos and true hippies don’t believe in all that consumerism.

The Heavy Pets get Fashionably Rocked

FashionIndie’s styling adventure with The Heavy Pets, an explosive rock-funk-jam band, began Wednesday. They’ve got to look fly for their concert TONIGHT (3/18) at the Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. Thus, lead singer and guitarist Jeff Lloyd came along on this sartorial journey as the band ambassador, and tried on clothes with equal parts wariness and enthusiasm. The goal was to capture the sound of The Heavy Pets through this evolving look. We ran the gamut on the levels of fashion starting on high in the Maguire Steele PR showroom, rode the fast wave biggies like Zara, and rummaged through thrift treasures at Beacon’s Closet. The Pets scored some serious swag, and also hopefully learned a thing or two about the art of shopping and dressing. We began the fashion search at Maguire Steele, the PR company that represents Timo Weiland, a designer we thought would evoke their clean cut hippiness. We arrived to find access to not only Timo, but to the Shipley & Halmos and Billy Reid collections, and Duckie Brown shoes. What a lovely way to start the day. Jeff was surprised to find himself liking this salmon Shipley blazer and green saddle shoes by Duckie; once he put them on, he saw the magic in them. Color and fit; bright and tight. That’s the vision.

Playing the green Timo Weiland vertically striped cardigan against the horizontally striped Billy Reid shirt made for optical illusionism – perfect for on-stage psychedelia. We tried with two Shipley & Halmos ties, one a conglomeration of pin thin geometric shapes, the other made of a mustard velvet (which totally called for heavy petting). We’re taking all of it along.

In the looks above, note the Shipley and Halmos pants: crisp, paper thin, glowing blue. Jeff really dug the look and feel of them. This sparked our next stop – Zara. Known in the masculine for modestly priced, modernly cut suits, I thought he might find a pant with a similar fit. Unfortunately, no fancy pants there captured our attention quite like Shipleys; the drawback to going from such a quality level of design down to one of the quickest of the fast fashion powerhouses (2 week turnaround from sketch to shelf!).

We did however conquer his need for new jeans. Imagine, he’s never owned a pair of skinny jeans! FashionIndie’s first instinct was mustard, for its ability to bring a bright spice to the stage. The look on his face when Mustard Slim Cut Jeans were suggested was dubious to say the least. We insisted he give it a try. In the fitting room, dubious shifted to contemplation, and very quickly to impressed contentment. Sold! To the man in yellow. He liked the fit so much, he got them in heather black as well. (TIP – Gentlemen, go to Zara right now… they’re only $39!)

We perused the rest of rushed retail row on Broadway from Broome to Bleecker from Urban Outfitters to Uniqlo, but nothing was jumping out at us. Man, were we spoiled by the gorgeous goods at Maguire Steele. Plus, mass market seems no place to find pieces to encapsulate the unique Heavy Pets sound. Time to switch things up,take it down real low, down all the way to Brooklyn’s poppin’ top vintage haunt, Beacon’s Closet.

Our instructions for The Pet: grab anything that strikes you. With that we end up with armfuls psychedelic patterns, bronze grommets, cowboy flair and a polyester disaster that shall remain on the hanger.

We pruned the options, ready to take eight new/old shirts in their varying sizes back to the rest of The Heavy Pets. The first piece on the rack? Pierre Cardin, $18.95. He looked at it skeptically, FashionIndie looked at it delightedly on him; we managed to convince acception with the tidbit that Pierre Cardin did introduce The Beatles to the Nehru jacket. Done and done.

The full styling goes down around 6:00 p.m. this evening when they are done with the soundcheck. As they are musicians, and this is fashion, that time is of course a rough estimation. But when it happens, we’ll be live tweeting @FashionIndie & @JessicaLapidos.
