Mariah Carey is a lot of things. A diva, first and foremost. A loon. A mother to dem babies. A Jenny Craig spokeswoman. A Home Shopping Networker. But a fashion icon? Eh. When she first whistle-registered her way onto the music scene in 1990, she was fresh-faced, curly-haired and — style-wise — pretty boring. As the 90s went on, she shed her good girl image and most of her clothes to become the scantily-clad chanteuse we know and love today. When Joan Goodman moved from NY to Hawaii back in the 70′s, she didn’t know that the best friend she made there would become the inspiration and namesake of her future jewelry company. Pono means: In Perfect Order, Beneficial, Necessary (among other meanings), and having had a Pono necklace for approximately one week, I can tell you it is all of those things. While Joan runs her family’s button manufacturer, Bobbi Trim, where Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Thakoon and Vera Wang all get their buttons, she’s put her brand and resources to work creating sustainable and beautiful baubles. With Italian resins, natural wood, shell and horns, she makes would-be heavy jewelry feel light as air.
