- The New York Times seems to think that there are other places outside of Manhattan, let alone other places outside of Manhattan that need street style coverage. - Beloved children’s book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, who wrote the seminal bed-wetter Where the Wild Things Are, died today from complications of a recent stroke. He was 83. [NYT]

- Kate Middleton may be the apple of fashion’s eye right now, but let’s not forget that her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II has been royally turning it for 60 years. [Telegraph]

- Speaking of the Duchess of Cambridge, Sarah Burton revealed that she used Alexander McQueen‘s Fall 2011 collection as a cover for the wedding dress that launched a thousand gasps. Here’s how the blogger competition went down:

I was escorted inside Victoria’s Secret headquarters to a VS PINK Style Off. Pitted against other top bloggers and online fashion editors, we entered a room, across from their very own Starbucks, that looked like a beach. With glass jars of candy and hot man serving popcorn and mocktails (you can imagine the disappointment). Victoria’s Secret Angel Elsa Hosk was there (gorgeously, naturally) to officiate the ceremony. A PINK bagful of spring break essentials for 10 of our readers, and one giant shopping spree for the winning blogger was at stake. Your spring break was on the line! I knew I had to win it for you, and for me, and for you. Well, the results are in, AND I WON!!! That means 10 of you are getting tricked out for Spring Break!!

It got all Hunger Games real quick: there was a cornucopia of bathing suits and accessories in the middle, and at an angelic, “Ready, Set, GO!” from Elsa, we had seven minutes to complete our task. I dashed forward, battling off girls from Cosmopolitan, Nylon, InStyle, Racked, StyleCaster, Hollywood Life and Modelinia (who turned out to be my staunchest competitor) and a dozen others, and fastidiously picked my look.

I grabbed the multicolor leopard top to offset the bright purple bottoms. Key wrap bracelets, a necklace, and a red ring embossed “Bad Girls” made it back with me. We each had a rack of signature PINK shorts, sweats, cropped tees and tanks to work from. In a Katniss-Rue moment of diplomacy, I made a trade with the People editor: the blue sweatshirt on my rack for the orange jean shorts on hers (who wears a sweater on Spring Break? C’mon People). With bikini, shorts and jewelry in place, I stuffed a bag with the essentials; a towel, snorkeling gear, a frisbee, a water bottle, and strapped a bra and panty to it for later. It’s in the details, kids. With a camera and headphones, she was ready for the beach. Just one question remained: “Where is the party?” Luckily, there was a neon pink shirt that asked that very question. I slung it over her shoulder, so the hotties on the beach would oblige.

- Skin care brand REN decided to get all porny to celebrate their 10th anniversary with this soft-core bit of marketing. The protagonists may feel clean but I know that I could use a shower. [Fashionista]

- Karlie Kloss, movie star. Kloss’ rise to superstardom in the world of modeling means that Hollywood will begin knocking on her door, if they haven’t rammed it down already. Karlie may be following in the strides of other model-turned-actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and is eschewing the catwalk for the film studio.

- Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a beauty contract. While the runway pays well for girls of Karlie’s stature, a beauty campaign can set a model on the catwalk to Easy Street for the rest of her life. Since snagging Estée Lauder, when’s the last time you saw Hilary Rhoda walk a show?

- Karlie Kloss, new creative director at Christian Dior. This may be a bit of a stretch, but the house does love them some Kloss. She hasn’t missed a step in a single Dior show — from couture to resort — in years and Bernard Arnault might want to just keep her around.

- Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it. As everyone knows, models making the cover of Vogue is as rare as a viable Republican candidate for the presidency. So what better reason to cancel on Fashion Week than to jet off to Paris for an exclusive shoot with Mario Testino for a star-making cover?

- Karlie Kloss DiCaprio. After she walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly smitten with the leggy Ms. Kloss. He’s landed Gisele and Bar Refaeli, why not add the newest bright young thing to his collection of catwalkers?

The collection was produced in-house and features bras, panties, garter belts, baby dolls, teddies, a kimono and a merry widow corset, retailing from $98 to $298. Some were seen on the runway during the VS Fashion Show back in November, sprinkled in among the regular underthings. It’s understandable if you didn’t notice, though, what with Miranda Kerr‘s $2.5 million assets stealing the spotlight. [WWD]

“When you work with real people, you can’t impose something,” Roitfeld told WWD. She also stressed the importance of casting for male fashion becuase “it’s men who give personality to the clothes they wore.” Where she stands on women and personality is anyone’s guess, but for the cover Carine tapped easy-on-the-eyes French actor Tahar Rahim, shot by Nick Knight. Frequent collaborator and BFF Karl Lagerfeld also stepped behind the lens for the issue, as did Richard Avedon‘s son, Michael, who shot portraits of up-and-coming young actors, including The Hunger Games‘ Alexander Ludwig. Jean Baptiste Mondino snapped hottie bullfighter José María Manzanares and Willy Vandeperre lensed Lima et al for the pin-up calendar.

Chief creative officer Christopher Bailey and co. fired off a series of “Thank-yous” after hitting the milestone, which served as yet another technical triumph for the iconic label. In October, Burberry was ranked as the most digitally-competent brand with the highest digital IQ in an index created by NYU’s think tank, L2 Luxury Lab. And while there are other fashion brands with more Facebook friends — Victoria’s Secret has over 16 million and Converse over 21 million — they’re not trying to sell you a $1400 bag anytime soon. 4. Sozzani, ironically, wanted to avoid a senseless debate because she is “aware of the fact that people can easily attach labels without thinking.” She then goes on to admit: “I made a mistake. I had to do what I thought was right, that is leave the picture and let everybody express their opinion freely. The picture is beautiful and that’s all.”

5.  The editrix is a staunch advocate against pro-anorexia websites but instead of giving up on “experimental” photos such as this, she’d rather offer a course educating people about the history of photography.

6.  Next time, just say it to her goddamn face: “Before talking, why not just ask? I would have answered your doubts before, without causing so many pointless remarks.”

Karlie, for her part, didn’t understand the controversy at all. She thought the photos were beautiful and was very proud and happy with the way the shoot turned out.

Cupping her burgeoning baby bump on the red carpet, Bey let loose the dogs of publicity war when she thew her mic to the ground, ripped open her Dolce jacket, and announced to the world the coming of the Messiah.

24. Karl Lagerfeld's obsession with Blake Lively Blake Lively is Karl Lagerfeld's kind of girl. And he didn't hesitate to let everyone know, naming the Gossip Girl star Chanel's official purse ambassador, throwing her in print ads, parading her about the French Riviera and most terrifying of all, showing her something bearing resemblance to actual affection.

23. The rise of the tween style icon -- Hailee Steinfeld, Chloe Moretz and Elle Fanning cover LOVE magazine The kids are more than all right, they're fucking fabulous. Hailee Steinfeld, Elle Fanning and Chloe Moretz showed that style knows no age limits, landing on best-dressed lists while barely in high school. Miu Miu tapped Steinfeld for its fall campaign and Rodarte had Fanning star in a short film, while all three graced the cover of LOVE magazine this summer.

22. Emma Watson, style icon Emma Watson truly came into her own this year in a series of flawless looks both on and off the red carpet, some stunning editorial work, a capsule collection with Alberta Ferretti and a campaign with Lancôme. Hermione's not a girl, and very nearly a woman.

21. Christian Dior's disastrous Haute Couture show 2011 had its share of disastrous runway shows, but none as disastrous as Christian Dior's fall 2011 haute couture show. Left to his own devices, poor Bill Gaytten offered up an overwrought and wildly incoherent mess that, despite being maligned by pretty much everyone, still wound up on at least one red carpet thanks to Katy Perry. Let's just say she didn't help matters any.

19. Versace for H&M One of the most buzzed-about diffusion lines of the year, Donatella Versace's exclusive one-off collection reignited interest in the brand's sumptuous archives and had everyone from Anna Dello Russo to Kanye West clamoring for those Medusa heads and Miami prints.

18. Karlie Kloss comes of age They grow up so fast! Karlie Kloss turned 19 this year, covered Life Magazine, shed her clothes on several occasions, became a Victoria's Secret Angel and got eye-banged by Leonardo Dicaprio -- in other words, she very publicly became an adult and a supermodel.

Victoria Beckham, fashion designer This year Victoria Beckham lived up to her nom-de-Spice by gaining real credibility as a designer, and not just another celebrity with too much time on their hands, while simultaneously stepping out of her husband's sexy shadow. A win at the British Fashion Awards for Design Brand of the Year capped off a year of living poshly.

13. The Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum Sneaking in at the end of the year, the virtual Valentino museum is an innovative and ingenious step by one of the world's most iconic designers that makes his formidable legacy available to anyone who wants it. A novel and forward-thinking concept that belies Valentino's 800 years.

12. The rise and subsequent fall of the fascinator Trends come and go all the time in fashion, but rarely has one particular trend impacted culture so hard and been discarded so fast. The Royal Wedding inspired ladies everywhere to make it a say-something hat day, but it was Princess Beatrice's fascinator that may go down as one of the most infamous pieces of millinery in modern recollection.

11. Marc Jacobs stolen spring 2012 collection Lifted from a train en route from Paris, the theft of parts of Marc Jacobs' spring 2012 collection was this year's biggest and most intriguing mystery. Besides, of course, whether Marc himself would defect to Christian Dior or stick it out with Louis Vuitton -- who, coincidentally, was also a victim of theft just two weeks later. Yep, big coincidence.

10. Fashion Week calendar controversy Tensions came to a head between the four fashion capitals, leaving the fate of upcoming fashion weeks up in the air. But if there's one thing we've learned from this is you don't fuck with the Italians.

9. Kate Moss' fairytale wedding It was only a few years ago that Kate Moss was spiraling down a cocaine-encrusted rabbit hole, but fashion's favorite bad girl has finally settled down. Moss wed longtime beau Jamie Hince in an epic three-day long ceremony known cheekily as Mosstock. BFF Naomi Campbell was one of her bridesmaids, and in a show of solidarity, Moss chose a wedding dress by John Galliano. Kate Moss' wedding was not only front-page news, it garnered the most coveted cover of the year: Vogue's September issue.

8. Bill Cunningham New York Originating and perfecting the art of streetstyle photography decades before The Sartorialist picked up a camera, Bill Cunningham finally got his time in the spotlight thanks to a heartwarming documentary that reveled a little of the man behind that ubiquitous lens.

7. Kanye West shows at Paris Fashion Week Kanye West is a man of many talents, though fashion design may or may not be one of them. A true lover of fashion, West did his research and worked with the best people but in the end he let his usual over-zealousness get the best of him and the result? When prompted for her opinion on West's collection, Anna Wintour responded: "Ask someone else."

The rise of Lea T. and Andrej Pejic Transsexual lady Lea T. met Oprah and androgynous male model Andrej Pejic met the Queen of England this year. If that weren't enough of a moment, these two gals also shattered boundaries in fashion and modeling, and in the process became icons and role models to the LGBTQ community.

4. The reinvention of Carine Roitfeld Quele scandale! Did she get fired? Did she quit? Are she and Emmanuelle Alt no longer friends? The rumors have been buzzing around Carine Roitfeld since she officially exiting Vogue Paris in February -- and in the process creating a future supermodel in Saskia de Brauw --  after 10 landmark, nipple-bearing years. But through it all, Carine has been the picture of calm and chic, hiking up her pencil skirt and reinventing herself as a brilliant and in-demand stylist/the coolest bitch on the planet. Stay tuned for another reinvention when Carine launches a new magazine and starts life as a grandmother next year.

Though an unsurprising but nevertheless brilliant choice, Sarah Burton's handiwork cemented the Duchess of Cambridge (née Kate Middleton) as not only a bona fide style icon but a phenomenon on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Burton proved she was the right person to carry on McQueen's brilliant legacy and take it to the next level.

Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty The most successful fashion exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's  history, Alexander McQueen's Savage Beauty set records and inspired fashion lovers and neophytes alike. The exhibit proved so popular, in fact, the Met extended its run twice. Even then, there were still lines of people waiting hours to get into the museum, but for 661,509 people it was well-worth the wait.

1. John Galliano stars in Gallianogate John Galliano's downfall has loomed large all year, particularly since Christian Dior has yet to announce his replacement, despite a neverending back-and-forth with a stubborn Marc Jacobs. Following a stint in rehab, a guilty conviction in Paris for making anti-Semitic remarks, and the general destruction of his reputation, Galliano at least had one bright spot this year: designing good friend Kate Moss' wedding dress. Galliano's dismissal also raised questions about the stress designers are under to deliver  multiple collections a year -- just ask Balmain's Christophe Decarnin. Everyone's still waiting to see who Dior picks to take the throne and if Galliano can make a comeback after such a devastating fall. As 2011 comes to a close, 2012 has the promise of even more scandals, breakdowns and breakthroughs that we cannot wait to cover obsessively for you. Creole for “my home,” LakayPAM was founded in 2006 by Cedrick Roche, his wife Carolina Bittencourt and Mathias Youbi to help provide poor children with food, shelter, medical care, education and other basic needs.  Interacting with the Haitian kids, however, one would scarcely know they face such adversity on a daily basis.

“It was almost as if they didn’t know something happened,” Coco said. “They’ve gone through so much that it gave the entire experience a real hope. Even when we had the cameras. The adults did not want cameras in their faces – I could understand that — in the beginning, when there was so much, they thought ‘We’re going to be saved!’ And nothing happened.  When we came with our cameras, they did not want that. But the kids were like, ‘Yeah! Let’s do it! I’m a model!’ There were at least three or four kids I wanted to take home with me. I’ll be the new Angelina!”

For all involved, the time spent in Haiti clearly made a lasting impression — both Coco and James and Cedrick and Carolina plan on visiting later this month, while after the film screening I couldn’t help but notice Behati overcome with tears. Her photos were a testament to the spirit of the trip and displayed that the model is just as proficient behind the camera as she is in front of it. While this was her first exhibit – a major accomplishment she ranks alongside strolling the VS runway – photography is something she will do long after she hangs up her wings.

Letters to Haiti was an incredibly moving event that at least inspired one young super in the audience. Karlie Kloss couldn’t wait to get involved, but Haiti will have to wait till at least the New Year – first she has to head back to St. Louis for the holidays.

In between moments of undress, fashion editor Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele tries to cover the teen up in looks by Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Max Mara and Roberto Cavalli.

But really, who’s looking at the clothes?

This is Kloss’ eighth international Vogue cover, though she has yet to score that grand daddy of covers — American Vogue. However, the S.S. Karlie is blasting into outer-space considering her recent strut down the Victoria’s Secret runway.

And then there’s the guaranteed seal of supermodel approval – the not-at-all-creepy attentions of noted supermodelizer Leonardo DiCaprio.  Come 2012 — mark my words —  Anna Wintour will render her in some disappointing cover story shot by default photogs, Mario Testino or Annie Leibovitz.

From there, next stop: world domination.

Chanel Iman told Modelinia she tries to gain weight before a show. “I have a big potluck at my house. All my friends bring over food and we barbecue and party it up!”

Holler girl. What about Lima’s intense regimen? Six weeks before a show, she works out twice a day and eats only lean protein and green vegetables with an occasional protein shake or cereal bar for a snack. Nine days before, she goes on an all-liquid diet, replacing real food with protein shakes. Then a mere 12 hours before a show, she stops drinking all liquids completely, including water.

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’ve got lots and lots of time on your hands?

“[whispers] Oh that’s a nice one. I love to travel, but I really love to hang out with my Grandaughters downstairs. I’m on 10, they’re on 5. It’s not too difficult to find time when I’m done with my coffee. We are on another roll I tell you! I’m doing a lot of appearances. I’m on the road doing promotions or opening new stores. It’s a very busy time now, but I love it. I heard a great quote on the radio the other day; Mark Twain said, ’Make your vacation your vocation.’ Is that interesting? Or make your vocation your vacation. That’s a little harder to to. I felt, Old Marky and I, he must have been overworked. He must have been a workaholic. But I love what I’m doing.”

Your daughter, Lulu, werqed it on the runway last week. Is she pursuing modeling, or is that walk just for you?

“No, no, no, the show inspiration was of a voluptuous figure, which Lulu has always had and stood for. Last time she was on the runway was in 2000 when I did a show with the Playboy Bunnies. She was the best on that runway. She knows how to do [cups her hands a few inches from her breasts, gives a hunch]… She would never dream of modeling, she would have to loose 2/3 of her body weight. I dont know, maybe Victoria’s Secret? All the Victoria’s Secret models come off of my runway, because I let them be sexy, you know, flaunt it. And sure enough it’s easy to get them, then they’re scooped up by Victoria and you can’t get them anymore.”

What do your new timepieces tell us about you?

“What I love is that they always have stuff for young, my granddaughter sometimes. A skull with a bow in this watch. They go from kitty to grandma. From classic to cute. Twinkly to chic. I dont know, anyway. They’re great, beautifully made. Great weight, which is very important to me in a watch. I had lots of fun doing it, great company. I just really love them. The numbers are big, they have a real weight to them…I mean Frankie has me down. Frank, he owns the company… Frankie what’s your last name?”

We can forgive her unreliable memory so long as she continues to turn out the you-go-girliest pieces in the industry.
