The fragrance itself, described as “the ultimate connoisseur’s scent”, was a concoction of pepper, grapefruit, lavender, vanilla, and patchouli (aka light, cool, and a little intimidating).  Former NY Times Scent Editor Chandler Burr walked us through each individual scent in a fun and compelling sniff class that broke it all down.

Who is this man exactly?  GQ Style Correspondent Brett Fahlgren told us that the character behind the scent was “a contemporary charmer, with a spirit of masculinity– a man who is courteous, refined, and cultivated” while the designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana remarked “he is worldly, successful, impeccable, but also boasts something else such as an innate elegance that distinguishes him from the rest”.

More exciting news at the event was the launch of Dolce & Gabbana’s new iPhone app, “Rules for the Modern Gentlman” which was written by Dylan Jones, editor of GQ UK.  The app was designed to cover tips on etiquette (like asking a girl on a date properly), style & grooming (like how to match your patterns), and quick solutions for gentlemanly predicaments (sort of like the how to eat a pork loin off a rib without disturbing the passed appetizers peace).  Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana told us, “The application is a perfect reflection of the scenarios that the Dolce&Gabbana man may find himself encountering; as a modern gentleman he can approach each situation with a sense of poise and confidence that distinguishes him from the rest.”

When looking for the campaign’s face, naturally, the brand turned to Hollywood ladies man: Matthew McConaughey.  The campaign video showed off McConaughey, the one gentleman himself, the morning after an epic celebration (very a la How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days). Still tuxedo clad, he strolls through the party ballroom doing exactly what we would all do after a grand night at a ball, staring into a beach sunset.  How dapper. We recommend the scent for the young and elegant set, the gentlemen of our generation.

April’s contest befittingly features Spring dresses. Post yourself in your springiest dress and you could win!

Sheer-bodied solid-armed pieces sauntered alongside pleather-cum-latex pants and trenches, surrounded by the sky-high shoulders of the eighties’ Thierry Mugler. The shoulders that Gaga helped to resurrect. As the looks turned to rubberized armor amongst a show where models became lively sirens, clutching at the wooden column archway, becoming little monster on the runway, the Mugler philosophy came to light: Entertainment.

The store was founded out of co-owners-and-designers Matthew Murphy and Kirk Beattie’s desire to create a launching pad for London’s young fashion, art and design sphere by featuring collections that complement their line of original shoes. Their selection is a mix of the in-house b Store brand clothing and shoes, fleshed out with a host of new designers you’ll be first to hear about.

The women of b Store are “Leaving Dreamland” within this teaser of a moving Spring 2011 look book. She’s waiting, searching, longing for something, as her look shifts from a glint of joviality in the black and white prints and silhouettes, but moves to a more severe box cut.  I feel like her as I must content myself to watch, wait, and long for that patterned jumpsuit, tweed bandeau, high waisted short shorts, and reinvented denim skirt.

London belongs to the b Store man as he begins in a strobed out trip, smoking and stripping between a sharp collared shirt and a shapely jumper. Night blends to day in a working man’s irreverent casual, napping in his loose sweater over dress shirt, jeans rolled, socks exposed. Day fades to night, he presses the club  in that same swinging layer over a spotted shirt. He darts into sharpness, fleeing in a blazer, back to the trippy London fog.

We were oh-so-honored to be included in Made Jewelry’s video series Made in SF. In episode three, SF Indie Fashion founder and editor Lorraine Sanders chats about San Francisco fashion, what she loves about the city and some of her favorite spots to shop.

I just got back from Boston yesterday…I was invited by TJ Maxx and Marshalls for a blogger event they were having and had a chance to visit their headquarters and get a preview of their fall fashion. I had an amazing time and got to meet some really great bloggers as well. I’ll be posting pictures and videos in the next couple of days, but in the meantime wanted to share with you this same look for less they showed us. First impressions come and go with everyone we meet, but some of those impressions last longer than others some may probably even be unforgetable. Yesterday three of the fashion industry’s most influential bloggers attended Fashion Camp NYC at LIM (@fashioncampNYC.) The bloggers consisted of Elysia Mann (@fashion_fille) the eighteen year old founder and blogger of FashionFille- I have to say I got the opportunity to personally meet this Penn State sophomore, and let me say she is the most down to earth girl you could ever meet. Also attending was the night life photography queen Katya Moorman (@katya_nyc) you will definitely fall in love with her trademark signature style who in my opinion reminds me of a wicked Aggy Deyn with a twist of a modern day Twiggy. Lastly who could forget ENVY’s very own Daniel Saynt (@fashionindie) who of course had one or two bitchismz up his sleeve here and there.The LIM Fashion Camp student’s were young, curious, and definitely glitter veined born. I saw a lot of ambition and amazing outfits. We all heard alot of inspirational words from these three innovators, I’m sure their impressions are going to be around for many years to come and here to last.

Have you noticed an ever-increasing awareness of advocates for positive body images, size acceptance, and fat activism?  If not, then let me introduce you to advocates like Jessica Weiner, Ben Barry, NAAFA, Every Body is Beautiful. The newest organization to join the campaign for a positive body image is the Girl Scouts.

Why are these advocates so important?

Beauty Redefined: Girls and Body Image Survey (2010), a nationwide survey that included more than 1,000 girls ages 13 to 17, shows many girls consider the body image sold by the fashion industry unrealistic, creating an unattainable model of beauty.  Nearly 90 percent of those surveyed say the fashion industry (89 percent) and/or the media (88 percent) place a lot of pressure on them to be thin.  However, despite the criticism of this industry, 3 out of 4 girls say that fashion is “really important” to them.

Take a closer look at these numbers!

According to the Girl Scout Research Institute:

Girls attribute media and fashion to the pressure to be thin.

• Nine in ten girls say the fashion industry (89%) and/or the media (88%) place a lot of pressure on teenage girls to be thin.

Girls say they would prefer to see more “natural”/“real” images in the media.

• Eighty-one percent of girls would rather see “real” or “natural” photos of models than touched-up, airbrushed versions.
• Seventy-five percent would be more likely to buy clothes they see on “real-size models” than on super-skinny ones.

Girls have a love/hate relationship with the fashion industry.

• Three in four girls (75%) say that fashion is really important to them.
• Forty-eight percent wish they were as skinny as the models in fashion magazines.
• Forty-seven percent say fashion magazines give them a body image to strive for.
• Forty-one percent say they prefer to see the latest fashions on skinny models rather than on fuller-sized women.

However:

• Sixty-five percent of girls think that the body image represented by the fashion industry is too skinny; 63% think it is unrealistic; and 47% think it is unhealthy. More than a quarter (28%) say the fashion industry body image looks sick.
• Sixty percent say that they compare their bodies to fashion models.
• Only 46% think the fashion industry does a good job of representing people of all races and ethnicities, with Caucasian girls the most likely to say this (52%, compared to only 42% of Hispanics and 32% of African Americans).
• Thirty-one percent of girls admit to starving themselves or refusing to eat as a strategy to lose weight.

In an effort to continue to make change, the Girls Scout launched “The Changing Face of Fashion,” an initiative addressing the image of girls in the media.  Girl Scouts of the USA enlisted four models from Wilhelmina Curve creating a collective of videos, through It’s Your Story, exploring self-esteem and personal empowerment from the perspectives of plus size models Lizzie Miller, Anansa Sims, Leona Palmer and Julie Henderson, directed and shot by lifestyle and beauty photographer Cathrine Westergaard.

I knew they were bad. Those flimsy slats of spongy stuff with only a rubber thong to keep us in place couldn’t possibly be good for our feet. And now the reports are in from general practitioners, podiatrists and emergency room physicians that prove that the flip-flop is out to get us when we least expect it – if common sense eluded us in the first place.

Take them out of their natural habitat, the beach, and into the office, the mall, the night club – it’s been done, *shudder* – and put yourself at risk of chronic foot and ankle pain, back injuries, escalator mishaps and seriously awkward looking falls, which if taped may get you shown alongside America’s Funniest Home Videos’ ‘crotch injury’ montage. 

Death by Haviana

Wearing flip-flops while driving is the danger equivalent of texting, applying mascara, shaving, and engaging in adult ‘relations’ – in other words, you greatly increase your chances of exchanging insurance details with an angry stranger, or worse – getting up close and personal with your local coroner.

“There have been episodes of horrific collisions caused when someone was
unable to brake because their flip-flop became caught,” Joanne Banfield, manager for trauma injury prevention at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, tells the Toronto Star. 

The Silent Mangler

Banfield says there are limited statistics about injuries related to
flip-flops because it’s often not determined immediately that an injury
is directly related to wearing the sandals.

“Someone could have a hairline fracture or a sprain and never attribute it to their flip-flops,” says Banfield. 

See? Diabolical.

Ride a bike wearing flip-flops and you may find yourself enjoying the scenery one minute and the next – losing your shoe and your balance in a split second then slamming your boy or girl crotch on the crossbar (Morrissey had something awesome to say about this: “I crashed down on the crossbar and the pain was enough to make a shy, bald buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder” – you don’t want to chance that.)

For the record, I have never owned a pair of flip-flops, ever. They aren’t comfortable for daily wear (I don’t care what people say!), they offer zero support and make you unconsciously scrunch your toes to keep them on (however, I am acutely aware when this happens, it feels weird and nasty) which causes all kinds of anatomical problems, and I cannot wear a thong – when that plastic or rubber touches the skin between my toes it triggers something that makes me feel instantly sick to my stomach. Apparently I’m not alone on this, a friend also has the same reaction and shuns the trend. And with my track record of stepping in dog poop, I’d like a little more between me and the brown offenders than a wafer of cheap sponge.

With a resume that crosses the boundaries of film and fashion, a reserved spot on every best-dressed list and a profile that keeps on rising, Elisa Sednaoui is the official girl of the moment. The Egyptian-Italian beauty is
everywhere: from the pages of Vogue Italia to the jury of the Paris
film

festival, and her sophisticated allure has captured the attention of Karl Lagerfeld (who cast her in his resort film) and Diane von Furstenberg. MDC caught up with Elisa to find out more about the young
lady everyone is talking about.

MDC- How did you start modeling? Where were you discovered?

ELISA: Well I think it was destiny, like many things
in my life. My mother was a model, an editor and an agent for a while,
so when I was younger I used to go to castings with her all the time,
first on her shoulders, then by the hand. I was always looking at
books, helping her out with taking measurements of models; I remember
the afternoons we would spend in front of the TV, because she would
tape all of the girls, so we would go through all of the videos and I
think that was a big lesson for me.

I started when I was thirteen: I went to a casting, I was with her and we went to an agency in Paris and someone turned and looked at me and said ‘well why don’t you try?’ So I started, but I was serious, I
think I was too serious – it was very important for me to finish high
school so I didn’t do it full time until I was eighteen. I think for
this business either you give yourself full time, completely and
entirely or you will not get very far. It was only when I was eighteen
that I started modeling full time between Paris and London and then I
came to New York on a modeling job. I fell in love with the city right
away so I decided to move here.

MDC-As someone who appreciates collaboration, how do you feel about the way things are for models nowadays. A lot of times girls are made to feel like they can’t contribute to the shoot; just show up
and don’t rock the boat.

ELISA: Exactly, show up, shut up, don’t complain about anything, don’t be a pain. I remember reading an interview that I loved from Natalia Vodianova that said, “I’m kind of a pain, and one
can’t stop me from saying what I’m thinking and people who book me know
what they are booking me for and I love it!” That is the way things
should be on set; each person is an important part of the team.

Mark Ryden‘s “The Gay ’90s: Olde Tyme Art Show” has just opened at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York City and it’s a mix of madcap escapism reminiscent of Tim Burton‘s recent tryst at the MoMA. A definite must see for those who appreciate the odder things in life, the work tackles ideals of Jesus Christ, our 14th president and chicks with really big heads. Check out some of our favorite pieces from this unique artist after the jump.

“The central theme of “The Gay 90s: Old Tyme Art Show” references the idealism of the 1890s while addressing the role of kitsch and nostalgia in our current culture. “In the modern era, sentimentality and beauty have been disdained in the art world. This new work explores the line between attraction and repulsion to kitsch, and between beauty and banality.”

To get fashion fans in the mood for love, Alternative Apparel has created an original video that will play in NYC taxi cabs throughout fashion week, from February 11th until the 18th.

The film is called “Kinds of Love,” and was inspired by the real romance between famed French crooner Serge Gainsbourg and wild child songstress Jane Birkin. The short 30-second video will not only showcase Alternative Apparel’s spring 2010 styles, but it pays homage to the vibrant, eclectic culture of 1960′s France.
